Politics / Ring Road: Changing The Face Of Ibadan City by IB5(f): 12:05pm On Feb 17, 2013
Ibadan is a city with a rich history.  It is the capital city of Oyo State and the third largest metropolitan area, by population, in Nigeria after Lagos and Kano, with a population of 1,338,659 according to the 2006 census. Ibadan is also the largest metropolitan geographical area in the country. At Nigerian independence in 1960, Ibadan was the largest and most populous city in the country and the third in Africa after Cairo and Johannesburg.

Ibadan is a marriage between modernity and tradition and this is reflected in its population distribution. There are areas where the rich and middle class dwell; namely Bodija, Ashi, Akobo, Oluyole Estate, Iyanganku, Jericho and environs and then there are the areas where the predominant lower class members dwell; Oje, Beere, Ode ge, Odinjo, Idi Arere and environs.
Sequel to the pronounced intersperse between modernity and tradition which Ibadan represents, many people are of the view that the city is a rustic one.  But one road in the city has succeeded in changing all that.
Ring Road, as it has been called since inception, is gradually evolving from a residential area to a hugely patronized commercial hub of the city.

Before now, Ring Road had been home to a few offices, car marts, banks and insurance companies. However, all that has changed as the dual carriage road has become the toast of investors who daily search for available buildings on it to open for businesses. Ring Road could be likened to Lagos’ Broad Street because every business outfit that is worth its salt is rushing at the prospect of owning a piece of property along the now very popular road.

Today, on a road that comprises of five roundabouts, there are over 10 nightclubs (with some of them sometimes located side by side or across one another), numerous hotels, popular eateries and virtually all popular banks having a branch on it. The road is also now home to most of the leading car dealerships ranging from Honda, Kia, Ford, Hyundai etc while used car dealers (Tokunbo) also have offices along the road.

And so, currently, as a result of its high patronage, Ibadan is proud of Ring Road, in terms of internally generated revenues from taxes and indeed, the road is wearing a new look as the Local Government Area in charge of the district is leaving no stone unturned in making the road as attractive as can be to investors and residents alike.
“What could be the cause of the transformation?” one might be forced to ask. According to the Nigerian Tribune finding, the most subscribed reason behind this is that it is situated close to the entrance to Ibadan from Lagos.

Others cited its easy accessibility and good road network as being responsible for the preference which it currently enjoys. Also, as many of the multi-national companies and banks on Ring Road have lived up to their expectation by performing their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) as they have embarked on one form of beautification or the other of the road as approved by the authorities, the general appeal generated by their actions further prospered the road endearment as an area that would be highly lucrative for business and residence alike. These have greatly shot up the market value of land and buildings on and around Ring Road.

According to the Nigerian Tribune investigations, mixed feelings have trailed the ‘invasion’ of the commercial centres that now do business on the road. While some people, mostly youths, are thankful and appreciate the influx of investors, especially the relaxation centres and shopping malls, other people have been skeptical of the increase in commercial activities which has resulted in increase in traffic, both human and vehicular into the area.

They also linked the development to an increase in criminal activities which, in recent times, were alleged to be on the rise.
However, most business investors on the road denied the allegation of making Ring Road a target for petty criminals, stressing that though their presence had increased the value of the area and Ibadan in general, they (business owners), had also provided adequate security measures around their various establishments, in conjunction with the police, to provide cover for their businesses and residents around the area.

They added that making the road attractive for business by the state government had also led to immense increase in the internally generated revenue for the state which in turn was used to beautify other areas within Oyo.
It could be said that the beautification of Ring Road is indeed catching up with other areas within the state as the on-going beautification exercise by the state government has been yielding immense benefits.

Today, Ibadan is fast becoming a preferred destination for business owing to the large population and land mass and investors are already bringing their business interests to all parts of the city.  Suburbs like Molete through to Gate areas are now wearing a new look; neater streets and less crowded alleyways, which are made so by the Oyo State Road and Traffic Management Agency (OYSRTMA). Erring drivers are now promptly booked for offences, thereby ensuring free flow of traffic around the large city.

The major bridges have also been maintained while new ones are built, where necessary in order to free traffic and also combat flooding in different areas in the state, while the dredging of major rivers is ongoing.  As one person put it, “Ibadan is fast becoming an ‘alakowe’s’ (elite) city and residents are beginning to see an emerging organized mega-city.”
Speaking on the seriousness that the state government attached to the beautification exercise, the state Commissioner for Environment and Habitat, Mr Lowo Obisesan, said that it had come to stay and that there would be no going back in the commitment of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s administration at making Ibadan and the entire Oyo State look better in the next few months.

He maintained that the on-going beautification exercise in Ibadan was part of the efforts of the governor at bringing about the much needed transformation and restoration agenda of the state in line with its set goals.

He added that apart from the beautification exercise of the state government, the governor had also mandated local governments in the state to commence beautification exercise in their respective areas especially the council headquarters to make the exercise total.

Ring Road, nay Ibadan is undergoing a positive transformation. However, this change is not unconnected with the state governor’s resolve to make the state a prime place for doing business and Ring Road, which before now, was not a known business area like Dugbe and Bodija is a good testimony to his transformation agenda.

I'll go for japanese cars.

Comparing BMW(German) to Toyota(Japanese)
Or Benz(german) to Honda(Japanese).

Haven tested both product Toyota and BMW, I'll say the Japanese cars are by far more efficient, reliable and by far more durable than those of the germans.

Or is it Nissan we want to bring down to the level of GM(general motors) from the US.

Japanese are the best in this aspect.
Other asian countries are not in the class of these two: Japanese and Euro/American cars.

The only American made motor I think I can vouch for as per durability is Ford, but it seems it running out

Politics / Account Consolidation Fetches Oyo N7bn by IB5(f): 8:42am On Feb 17, 2013
Oyo State Commissioner for Finance, Zacheaus Adelabu, in this encounter with Jaiyeola Andrews spoke on the N7 billion generated from the consolidation of the state’s accounts with banks and other innovative policies of the incumbent administration in the state

The recent decision of the Oyo State government to prune the number of its bank account from 614 to three has fetched the state government a sum of N7 billion.

The state Commissioner for Finance, Hon. Zacheaus Adelabu, who disclosed this in an interview with THISDAY said “We have just done bank account consolidation where we streamlined all the banking activities of the state government having a policy that the type of account you can open in a bank.

“Now we have only three accounts in all the commercial banks. We have investment account, revenue account and expenditure account and then we have  made it a policy that we cannot have more than that. Before we came into office the state government had roughly 614 accounts and of course you know that is recipe for fraud, recipe for inefficiency and we have been able to stop that.”

Explaining that the exercise was intended to restore sanity into finance administration in the state, the commissioner said “We have been able to manage resources in this state by streamlining or blocking all the loopholes. I told you when I resumed the state account was 614 I did the account consolidation and in that one alone I realised more than N7billion from all those account that we had. We consolidated that one in the state and that has really taken us a long way.

“You remember that at the start of this administration, we have a mantra which we call Restoration, Transformation and Repositioning. Since the beginning, what we have done in the last one year is actually to restore, restate back to the track the state segments and then we start by re-engineering the administrative segments in the state. And then we started quite well by marshalling out our plans of how to transform the state and this has led to establishing what I call Socio-economic Team that is headed by the governor himself, supported by renowned professor of economics and some top talents within an2d outside the state to actually drive the economic plan of the state.

“We believe that the way to actually do this is to make sure that people within actually understand the plan. In the last one year, what we have done basically is to increase the level of awareness of the plan that we actually have for the state. If you observe very well, the number one thing that I will call precedent for every kind of economic development is peace. In the last one year, what you can say about us is that the state has been peaceful which is the funder mental and basic requirement for any economic development.

“We have been able to achieve that  in the last one year; that the state is peaceful, people can do their business the way they should do it. And the next thing after that is the real infrastructural renewal that we have embarked on. When you were coming into the state, you would have seen the work that is going on, and as we are doing that we support it with beatification.

“When you are talking about economic development, you are talking about how to make the best use of the resources that you have; betterment of the larger part of the society, Oyo State specifically. We have done that reengineering in the way we administer the Ministry of Finance,” HE SAID.

The commissioner insisted the incumbent administration has laid a good foundation for real development, adding that the “people will start experiencing as we go into the second years of this administration.”

Dismissing the allegation that the present administration hadnt done much, the commissioner said “What we are doing is highly practical. We have rehabilitated more than 199 roads  in the last one year and I want to see what the last administration had done in that respect. If you pass through Mokola you will see the fly-over bridge we are constructing. I want to see in the years of the previous administration where we have such. If you see our beautification in all part of Ibadan and in growing the city I want to see what the previous administration did in that respect.

“In the area of youth empowerment, it is on record that it is only this administration that employed up to 20,000 youths  in our Youth Employment Scheme, you have them in environment, agric extension, you have them also in hospital management board, and recently bulk of them have been deployed to school to go and give remedial classes and even full classes to our children, I want to know what the previous administration did in that respect.

“If you look at the ways we manage the resources of the state, look at peaceful atmosphere of the state devoid of violence as in the past, look at the mutual cooperation and understanding between the executive and the legislature, compared to the last administration, I will rate us that we have really done well.

“He explained that the state civil servants are being taken care of, recalling that “Before we came in, one of the perennial problems was teachers’ salaries because it was being paid manually and you can imagine the kind of issue that you will have when you have to manually pay more than 75,000 teachers where some of them will have more than 15 months’ salary arrears not because government has not paid but because of the hiccups in the process and now that one has been automated.

“Ask any civil servants in the state now, none of them will tell you he or she has not received salary by the 26th or before the end of every month. This is the only administration that has paid 13th month salary. It has never been done in the history of the state, lots of our civil servants have also been trained and retrained.

“On pension, the state government under Governor Ajimobi has paid over N2 billion to pensioners, we have also paid 142 per cent increase which the last administration refused to pay. We had at the initial stage issues with the civil servants but when they discovered that our administration is transparent, honest with the ways we are dealing with them, we opened the book and they see that we could not have done better they became excited and cooperative.
Are there challenges on the way, the commissioner said a fore knowledge of the enormity of the problems had prepared the current administration for the challenges.

He said, “My own is not to complain about challenges and everything because personally, I am aware of it before we came here and we believe that we are eminently qualified to tackle the challenges. But like I said, what we have done is what I call resource optimisation and resource maximisation. Our policy is that if you want to get the best out of all the things I said we have and when we are spending we have it at the back of our minds that we want to use outcome approach.

“What do I mean by that? I mean in all the money we are spending how much are we going to gain from it, whether the people will get democracy dividends from it or the effects that it will have. I just told you that we have done account consolidation when I came in.

Like the Ministry of Finance our watchwords are accountability, transparency, and predictability; when you have a law make sure it is uniformly applied and the last one is participation that is get the people’s feelings of what they really want so that you spend the resources on what you what to spend it on,” he said.

Politics / How Tinubu, Mimiko Shunned Each Other, Then Shook Hands In Akure by IB5(f): 3:38am On Feb 03, 2013
Ondo Governor took the first peace steps and Mr. Tinubu reciprocated.
Sworn political enemies, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo, and Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, have exchanged pleasantries in public for the first time since the October 20 governorship election in the state.

Mr. Tinubu and other ACN leaders had in the build-up to the election accused Mr. Mimiko of betrayal and vowed to unseat him as governor.
The governor in turn fired back during his re-election campaigns, asking the electorate not to vote for the ACN’s candidate, Rotimi Akerodolu, as the state would be governed from Lagos, a reference to Mr. Tinubu.

The venue of the re-union was Saint Thomas Anglican Church, Akure, at the burial ceremony of a prominent leader of the ACN in Ondo State, Wumi Adegbonmire, popularly known as “Omo-Ekun.” Mr. Adegbonmire died on December 28, 2012.

Arms length, then rapprochement
Although Mr. Tinubu initially avoided the Ondo Governor, the two men later shook hands after the church service.
Mr. Mimiko was the first of the two to arrive at the event. The former Lagos governor arrived quietly during the program.

When the programme ended, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, and his counterpart from Oyo, Abiola Ajimobi, approached Mr. Mimiko and appealed to him to make the first peace gesture to Mr. Tinubu.
A seemingly reluctant Mr. Mimiko agreed, and allowed himself to be pulled by the middle-men towards the ACN leader. He approached Mr. Tinubu and both men shook hands.

Brief History
The ACN, which controls five of the six states in South Western Nigeria, campaigned vigorously to take Ondo, being led by Mr. Mimiko of the Labour Party.
The ACN was at the forefront of Mr. Mimiko’s battle to re-claim his victory after he was denied victory in the 2007 elections. The Peoples democratic Party Candidate, Olusegun Agagu, was declared winner.

Before joining the Labour Party to contest in 2007, Mr. Mimiko was a member of the PDP.
Analysts had predicted that he would join the ACN if he was eventually declared winner of the elections, a move the governor rejected preferring to remain in his Labour Party.
The former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Tinubu, was said to have personally assisted Mr. Mimiko, financially and morally, during his efforts to reclaim his mandate at the court. Mr. Mimiko has denied ever receiving any financial assistance from Mr. Tinubu.
Shun greed, cleric warns
In his sermon at the burial ceremony, the Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Adebayo Akinde, urged Nigerian politicians, particularly those who are Christians, to shun greed and be committed to the service of the people.

He also advised them not to enrich themselves at the expense of the electorate that voted them into their respective positions.
Mr. Akinde, who expressed disgust over the present situation in Nigeria, noted that the country needed ‘political engineering’ to move forward.
He said Nigerians still wallow in abject poverty because of maladministration. The cleric described the late Mr. Adegbonmire, a former Secretary to the State Government in Ondo, as a dogged fighter who exhibited uncommon high sense of integrity.

“During the days of military dictatorship, late Adegbonmire stood by the Yoruba race through his writing in the old Nigerian Tribune and used his political exploits to develop his fatherland”
“The ACN leader was a principled person, he was loyal to the ideology of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, to the end,” he said.

The cleric noted that the deceased was not like many politicians who claimed to be Awoists, believers in Mr. Awolowo’s political philosophy, because of what they wanted to acquire.
He said Mr. Adegbonmire believed in “Awoism” and lived by it; stressing that when he was in government, he never enriched himself.
Mr. Tinubu and the ACN National Chairman, Bisi Akande, in their remarks described the late Mr. Adegbonmire as a man of integrity and a role model, saying he would be missed.

Mr. Tinubu said the vacuum created by the late ACN leader would not be too difficult to fill because of the ‘solid’ succession arrangement within the party.
He said the ACN leadership has developed many young politicians that could occupy any position in the party.
The event was attended by some state governors in the South West, deputy governors, federal and state lawmakers, former political office holders, and several Yoruba leaders.

http://www.punchng.com/business/money/yuletide-zenith-bank-adopts-osun-roundabout-for-n5m/

Zenith Bank Plc has paid N5m to the Osun State Government for the decoration of Abere roundabout, Osogbo.

Osun State Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Bola Ilori, disclosed this in Osogbo, on Wednesday, saying that the bank decided to adopt the roundabout as a result of its beauty.

Ilori explained that by the adoption of the roundabout, “the bank is free to hoist its symbol at the roundabout for the period of the yuletide,” adding that “the roundabout is strategically located.”

The special adviser urged other corporate organisations to emulate the gesture by Zenith Bank by adopting other roundabouts within and outside the state capital.

A statement by Ilori quoted the Osogbo branch Manager of Zenith, Mr. Olasunkanmi Adedeji, as hailing the partnership even as the banker commended the state government for beautifying the environment.

Ilori said, “Osun can never be the same again in terms of infrastructural development. Beautification of medians and roundabouts during the festive period is unprecedented and world class.

“People coming into Osogbo or passing through it can hardly recognise the capital city, which has witnessed immense transformation.

“Our roundabouts are world class. When people get into the city, they instantly know that there is festivity in the air. Osun can raise its heads among states of the federation that has flair for environmental aesthetics and preservation of nature.”

THE Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Oyo State has described 2012 as the year of peace in the state, according to the ACN Publicity Secretary, Dauda Kolawole, who felicitated with Governor Abiola Ajimobi, Christians and the entire residents of Oyo State on the occasion.

The party also commended the governor on his administration’s transformation agenda, which it said has seen Oyo State witness a year free of major crisis and chaos since the recent times.

“In less than two years, the administration of Governor Abiola Ajimobi has touched the life of every individual through all the development projects which, by the time the projects are completed, Oyo State would have regained its pace-setter status,” he said.

“The purposeful leadership and administrative qualities of Ajimobi is highly commendable. This is the first time in the history of Oyo State that we are celebrating various festivals in a year with minimal chaos and insecurity. This year 2012 is a wonderful year.”

Well done and thanks for the pictures. This is what we appeal for. I.e for citizens to show us the good and show us what is bad or what they want done. We all have cameras these days and we should use it to put leaders under pressure or show their effort.

I firmly believe that the SW will wear a drastically different look, for the better, in the next 2 years. Fashola has the biggest headache given the problems of Lagos. If other SW Governors can raise IGR aggressively and innovatively secure funds for infrastructure then they all SW States could be transformed more quickly and more effectively than has been achieved in Lagos under Fashola in 5 years.

I also took some pictures of market underconstruction in osun, I will upload them online here soon. That governor is doing well o.
