The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has decried Nigeria’s continued importation of petroleum products despite being one of the largest producers of crude oil in the world.
The governor made the submission while speaking with journalists at Ewohimi, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, at the 10-year remembrance service of Chief Jeremiah Ighodalo, father of the Chairman of Sterling Bank Plc, Dr. Asue Ighodaro.
The governor described the continuous importation of fuel into the nation as a patriotic shame to Nigeria.

Obaseki said Nigeria was one of the largest producers of crude oil in the continent and as such has no business importing fuel into the country.
“It’s a shame that Nigeria is still importing fuel when we are one of the largest producers of crude oil in the continent. As a nation, we should not be importing fuel at this point in our life. It’s a patriotic shame borrowing from the words of Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adiche,” he saidAlso speaking to journalists on the possibility of his refinery commencing operation and providing petroleum products to Nigerians, President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote said the plant would hopefully begin supply of products in 2023.


“The refinery can provide petroleum products for the whole of Nigeria and some parts of West and Central Africa hopefully by 2023,” he noted.
Besides, Edo State government said it has concluded plan to extend the Ossiomo Power to other senatorial districts in the state, in a renewed effort by the Obaseki-led administration to tackle the challenges of power supply and spur industrialisation.

Now to the question of how to stop Peter Obi from winning? The answer is simple enough. PDP and APC must form a coalition immediately. In the next 3-4 months, even a PDP/APC coalition would make no difference.

I really pray that God keeps us all alive to see how Obi presidency would work. Imagine the unprecedented goodwill. He just cannot help succeeding.

Beyond the facade of priggish speeches and appearances, an investigation by PREMIUM TIMES has now shown that Mr Obi is not entirely transparent in his affairs as he likes Nigerians to believe.

The investigation is part of the global International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ)-led Pandora Papers project. The project saw 600 journalists from 150 news organisations around the world poring through a trove of 11.9 million confidential files, contextualising information, tracking down sources and analysing public records and other documents.

Mr Obi is one of the individuals whose hidden business activities was thrown open by the project. Indeed, he has a number of secret business dealings and relationships that he has for years kept to his chest. These are businesses he clandestinely set up and operated overseas, including in notorious tax and secrecy havens in ways that breached Nigerian laws.

PREMIUM TIMES contacted Mr Obi with written questions and had an in-person interview with him weeks ahead of this publication.

The former governor admitted that he did not declare these companies and the funds and properties they hold in his asset declaration filings with the Code of Conduct Bureau, the Nigerian government agency that deals with the issues of corruption, conflict of interest, and abuse of office by public servants.

He said he was unaware that the law expected him to declare assets or companies he jointly owns with his family members or anyone else.
