A Spanish priest infected with Ebola will be treated with an experimental drug that has been used on two Americans infected with the deadly virus, the government said. vaccine-Ebola The drug called ZMapp arrived at Madrid’s La Paz-Carlos III hospital where the 75- year-old missionary was being treated in isolation, the health ministry said in a statement late on Saturday. Spain’s drug safety agency allowed the “exceptional importation” of ZMapp under a law that allows “the use of non- authorised medications in cases where a patent’s life is in danger and they can’t be treated satisfactorily with an authorised medication,” it said. The Roman Catholic priest, Miguel Pajares, was one of three people who tested positive for Ebola at the Saint Joseph Hospital in the Liberian capital Monrovia where he worked. He was brought back to Spain on Thursday on a medically equipped Spanish airforce plane, the first patient in the fast-spreading Ebola outbreak to be evacuated to Europe for treatment. Spanish health authorities said Thursday the priest was in a stable condition. The hospital is not providing medical updates for the missionary at his request. The military flight also evacuated Spanish nun Juliana Bonoha Bohe, 65, who worked at the same hospital as Pajares in Liberia and who was found not to have Ebola. The Spanish charity Pajares worked for, the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God, had asked Madrid to bring to Spain for treatment two African missionaries infected with Ebola who also worked at the hospital but the request was turned down. One of those two missionaries, a Congolese nun, died on Saturday due to Ebola, the charity said. There is no proven treatment or cure for Ebola, which causes severe fever and, in the worst cases, unstoppable bleeding. Some 55 percent of cases in this outbreak have been fatal. Two Americans infected with Ebola while treating patients in Liberia have shown signs of improvement since being given Zmapp back in the United States but health authorities say it is too early to tell if the drug had anything to do with that. ZMapp, a treatment made by private US company Mapp Pharmaceuticals, is still in an extremely early phase of development and had only been tested previously on monkeys. The use of the medication has sparked an ethical controversy as experts call for it to be made available to African nations. |
ABUJA- NATIONAL leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has urged the opposition to learn from the Saturday Osun State gubernatorial election. In a statement by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the party however advised the opposition to desist from actions and utterances that were capable of overheating the system as well as create room for violence. Hailing President Gooduck Jonathan for creating a peaceful environment for the election, the PDP described the Osun state governorship poll as “a clear testimony to President Goodluck Jonathan’s unparalleled commitment to peaceful elections in Nigeria. “The PDP hail the President for “creating the enabling environment for Osun people to freely and peacefully exercise their franchise without rancor or blood-letting”. The party also commended “the security forces for their display of professionalism in keeping the peace throughout the exercise despite provocations by desperate politicians. “The lesson from this election is that the opposition party should stop crying wolf where there is none. They must desist from actions and statements that cause confusion and create unnecessary tension, capable of igniting violence and blood- letting in elections.” Calling on its members and supporters to remain calm, the PDP also commended the people of Osun for adhering to rules and conducting themselves in an orderly manner during the election. |
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Sunday congratulated Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State on his victory in Saturday’s governorship election in the state. The president made this known in a statement signed by Reuben Abati Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity) read thus “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan congratulates Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State on his victory in Saturday’s governorship election in the state. The President commends the Independent National Electoral Commission and national security agencies for ensuring that the elections were free, fair, credible and peaceful in keeping with the avowed commitment of his Administration. President Jonathan also applauds the people of Osun State who came out en masse yesterday in all the local government areas of the state to peacefully and freely exercise their democratic right, trusting in his assurance that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure their safety and the sanctity of their votes. The President believes that the free, fair and peaceful conduct of the elections have fully reaffirmed his administration’s determination to positively reform Nigeria’s electoral processes. The outcome of the election has also given the lie to the false, unfair and uncharitable allegations that measures put in place by the federal government for the Ekiti and Osun State elections were partisan and designed to achieve a favourable outcome for his party. As Governor Aregbesola prepares to begin a second term in office, President Jonathan looks forward to continuing to work with him and other state governors to further improve the living conditions of Nigerians in Osun and other states of the country. He wishes Governor Aregbesola continued good health and a successful second term in office. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/jonathan-congratulates-aregbesola-inec/ |

Ebola-hit Sierra Leone declares state of emergency FREETOWN (AFP) – Sierra Leone leader Ernest Bai Koroma declared a state of emergency on Thursday and as the country struggled to contain the deadly Ebola epidemic. The impoverished country, along with neighbouring Guinea and Liberia, is struggling to contain an epidemic that has infected 1,200 people and left 672 dead across the region since the start of the year. “Extraordinary challenges require extraordinary measures. The Ebola virus disease poses an extraordinary challenge to our nation,” Koroma said in a televised address to the nation. “Consequently… I hereby proclaim a state of public emergency to enable us to take a more robust approach to deal with the Ebola outbreak.” Koroma said he had cancelled a trip to a summit of around 50 African leaders in Washington DC next week. He announced however that he would travel to neighbouring Guinea for a regional summit on the crisis gathering the heads of Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Ivory Coast. Koroma announced a raft of measures as part of the state of emergency, including quarantining Ebola-hit areas and deploying security forces to protect medical workers. He banned all public meetings not related to Ebola and cancelled foreign trips by ministers and other government officials, exempting only “absolutely essential engagements”. The president said the measures would be in place initially for 60 to 90 days, and then be reassessed. Sierra Leone, which has seen 224 deaths, was also preparing Thursday to bury Omar Khan, a “national hero” who saved the lives of more than 100 Ebola patients before succumbing to the tropical bug. - ‘Very serious threat’ - Fears that the outbreak could spread to other continents have been growing with European and Asian countries on alert. Leading medical charity Doctors Without Borders warned the crisis would only get worse and said there was no overarching strategy to handle the world’s worst-ever outbreak of the disease. Sierra Leone’s announcement comes a day after Liberia, which has seen 129 deaths, said it was shutting all schools and placing “non-essential” government workers on 30 days’ leave. US Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse said it was temporarily withdrawing its non- essential staff from Liberia, citing regional “instability and ongoing security issues”. Hong Kong announced quarantine measures for suspected cases, although one woman arriving from Africa with possible symptoms tested negative, while the EU said it was ready to deal with the threat. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has held talks with global health officials on potential measures to halt the spread of the disease. In Britain, where one person has tested negative for the disease, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said it was regarded as “a very serious threat”. The US Peace Corps announced Wednesday it was pulling hundreds of volunteers from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The European Union is equipped and ready to treat victims should the deadly virus be found in its 28 member states, an EU source said in Brussels. - Medical staff ‘swamped’ - In Hong Kong, a densely populated city previously scarred by disease outbreaks such as the 2003 SARS epidemic, health officials confirmed they would quarantine as a precautionary measure any visitors from Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia who showed fever symptoms. One woman arriving in the southern Chinese city from Africa, who showed symptoms including fever and vomiting, has tested negative for Ebola. Australia, which has already warned against travel to west Africa’s Ebola-hit countries, said it was well prepared in the unlikely event that the virus should reach its shores. Meanwhile, Thai health authorities said they had ordered all hospitals to monitor patients for any symptoms, particularly nationals or foreign tourists who had been in the outbreak area. A British doctor volunteering in Sierra Leone treating Ebola patients told Metro newspaper that medical staff were swamped. “The main challenge here, though, is that the health authorities just don’t have the infrastructure to cope. They’re overwhelmed,” Benjamin Black said. Togo-based pan-African airline ASKY, which serves 20 destinations, has halted all flights to and from Liberia and Sierra Leone following the death of a passenger from the virus. The 40-year-old man, who travelled from Liberia, died in Lagos on Friday in Nigeria’s first confirmed death from Ebola. The virus crossing borders for the first time by plane could lead to new flight restrictions aimed at containing outbreaks, the world aviation agency said. Japan’s health ministry said it has sent out an alert to hospitals and health organisa |

Jonathan has jst requested for $1billion to purchase new weapons 4 d Soldiers Imagine what the Northern muslims are causing to Nigeria. North has never contributed anything positive to the growth and development of Nigeria since the amalgamation. Their interests is power so that they can be sharing the oil money at will. With all these billions, we would get better roads, improve power supply, add quality to our education. Now we will waste them fighting against people who have nothing to lose and who don't even value their life. Tomorrow, EL Rufai will call on GEJ and Confab to mark out money for the rehabilitation of the North east while they are the people destroying their own house. |
It baffles me why these Governors that have failed their people will always run to GEJ for protection when their state houses of assembly is after them. Does GEJ have power over the various state houses of assemblies? Even Governors of opposition parties! Little wonder APC is blaming GEJ for its woes. Do the right thing and go to sleep satisfied and stop running to someone you all the while have abused his person and brought his office to ridicule. Have some form of decorum in yourself. As for GEJ, don't listen to them. Let them stew in their own oil |
Protests in Nasarawa, as Al-Makura moves to avert impeachment on july 17, 2014 at 8:23 am in news Facebook Share Twitter Share By Abel Daniel LAFIA— There were pockets of demonstrations in some parts of Nasarawa State yesterday, following the notice of impeachment served on Governor Umaru Al Makura, Monday, by the state House Assembly. Some youths demonstrated at the Orange Market at Mararaba, Keffi, Akwanga and other parts of Lafia yesterday, protesting what they described as alleged attempt by members of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to remove Al Makura from office for selfish reasons. Vanguard gathered that some of the protesters, who chanted war songs, were shouting ‘Don’t sack Al Makura,’‘Bring back Al-makura,’ among other unprintable things against the perceived sponsors of the impeachment move. However, some political stakeholders described the crowd of protesters as rented. Some leaders who spoke on the condition of anonymity said: “They are known political thugs who are being used by political contractors. It is all noise. “The governor has not even received the letter of impeachment and they are calling for his reinstatement.” Meanwhile, hundreds of anti riot policemen and other security operatives have been deployed to strategic positions to maintain peace in the state. Police spokesperson in the state, ASP Numan Ismaila confirmed that the protests had been brought under control by security agents who were patrolling the state. Meanwhile, Governor Al-Makura has travelled to Abuja in a bid to seek President Goodluck Jonathan’s inter-vention over his impeachment saga, just as members of the state House of Assembly had vowed to pursue the impeachment process to its logical conclusion. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/protests-nasarawa-al-makura-moves-avert-impeachment/ |
they appear to have a few friends at home who insist on speaking for them. Permit me to give just one example. Some northern elders have said that the Federal Government ‘’should pay billions as ransom to Shekau and release all detained Boko Haram members’’ and that there must be ‘’no foreign forces in Nigeria”. They have also demanded that ‘’force should not be used’’ in securing the freedom of the abducted girls. These demands are repugnant. It is the same people that did not want troops to be deployed in the area in the first place. It is the same people that did not want state of emergency to be declared in the North. It is the same people that have been urging the government to negotiate with Boko Haram in the last three years. It is the same people that have consistently asked that Boko Haram should be treated lightly and that they should be offered amnesty even though they have slaughtered no less than 10,000 innocent people. It is the same people that are suggesting that Boko Haram is actually a creation of the CIA, MOSSAD and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). It is one of these northern elders that referred to Boko Haram as ‘’freedom fighters’’ who are simply ‘’fighting for justice” only last year. It is another that said that members of Boko Haram ought to be treated ‘’in the same way as the Niger Delta militants’’ and that they should be rehabilitated, resettled and paid large sums of money only last year. It is another that said that ‘’Muslims should only vote for those that would protect their interests” and that he would see to it that ‘’Sharia law is implemented and applied throughout the whole country” in 2001. It is another that said that Nigeria was created by the British and granted independence by them in 1960 on the clear understanding that ‘’a northern Muslim would always lead the country” in 1994. It is another that said that if the North does not have it’s way on the voting formula at the Constitutional Conference he would lead his people ‘’out of Nigeria and into the Camerouns” just over a month ago. It is another that said that they would make our country ‘’ungovernable” if a southerner was elected into power in 2011. It is another that said, only a few weeks ago, that our country ‘’would burn” if President Jonathan or any other southerner contests for the presidential election in 2015. It is another that told us last year that ‘’poverty was the root cause of Boko Haram’’ and that the South was receiving too much money whilst the North was not receiving enough. How much more of this can we be expected to take? Just three weeks after the Haramites have abducted almost 300 young school girls at Chibok, burnt down their school and kept them as sex slaves, just a few days after they abducted eight more at Warabe Village, Borno state, just two weeks after two bombs went off in Nyanya, Abuja killing a total of 150 people between them and just three days after no less than 350 innocent people were slaughtered by the terrorists in Gamborou Ngala, a border town with the Camerouns, these northern elders are saying that force must not be used against them. This is unacceptable and their suggestion must be treated with the contempt that it deserves. ‘Never negotiate with terrorists ‘ I do not know what it will take for the Nigerian people to accept the fact that Boko Haram is the greatest evil that our country has ever had to contend with and that there can be no dialogue with such demons. I do not know what it will take for these northern elders to accept the fact that evil is evil, that you must never negotiate with terrorists and that their ‘’gentle way’’ simply cannot work. The truth is that until every single one of the Haramites is hunted down, brought to justice and despatched to hell there will be no peace in our country. We must also eliminate those who secretly encourage, fund and protect them. I have always viewed those that suggest that Boko Haram should be treated with kid gloves with the utmost suspicion. It is either that we live in a secular state where the rule of law prevails, where beasts have no place and where murderous animals are treated like the savages that they are or we shall have no country at all. All this talk about ‘’not using force’’ must stop because it is nonsensical, it is counter-productive and it presents a very real threat to our desire to continue to live as one nation. Those that abduct, rape, kill and enslave children do not deserve to live. Those that say that ‘’force should not be used’’ should give up them their own daughters in exchange for our missing girls. After they have done that they can be as gentle as they like with Boko Haram... |
Michael Babatunde has not even started playing. Ramon Azeez will be a top player and he has a big heart. It is unfortunate for Reuben Gabriel that he has suffered a lot with injuries because he has every attribute to be a super player. Many Nigerians who are sincere know his qualities. I trust that he will come through. But would you be his or their coaches then? No. My job with Nigeria is done. I just hope who comes in will give them the opportunity to showcase their talents. When I took over there was no standing team and I had to build from scratch really but am gone. I have loved serving my country but I believe I am done. An interview Keshi granted thecable.ng after the defeat by France in Brasilia http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/nothing-ll-make-change-mind-coach-eagles-keshi/ |
Former Nigeria coach, Stephen Keshi has confirmed Sports Vanguard’s breaking news on his parting of ways with the Nigeria Football Federation. We also told you more than three months ago that Nigeria Football Federation was not interested in renewing Keshi’s contract. Keshi has confirmed all our exclusives in this interview below. Nigeriacoach Stephen Keshi talks about ‘resignation’Stephen Keshi has parted ways with the Nigeria Football Federation. This is the true situation and not that the Nigerian coach has resigned. His contract with the federation ended with the World Cup and the Federation is not planning, as we exclusively reported more than three months ago, to renew the contract. Keshi is likely to pick the job he has been offered by South Africa. Q: Knowing what you know now, what would you have done as regards the preparations of the team before this World Cup? A: I would have loved to have had them in camp a lot earlier. The European season made a little bit difficult as I did not want to have only one half of the squad in camp before the others joined. We had less than two weeks to perfect our plans and it showed as it was only when we got to the tournament that we started picking up our rhythm. We had only three friendly matches which are really not enough to get ready for a tournament like this. So, those are what I would have liked to change. Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi Have you really quit your post? Yes. I have done my bit. I am tired of all the intrigues and backbiting and insinuations I get. The criticisms are nothing really because even siblings criticise each other. In this job sometimes it goes overboard and my family and those of my players get called names. I have had to tell the players many times to ignore those criticisms and just focus on the tasks at hand. There are many Nigerians who support you. Many who would like to see you continue the work you started with the team. Can you not change your mind for them? The same ones who were calling for my head after the Iran match? That ‚Äúthe World Cup is too big for Keshi‚Äù? I know there are many who truly support what we have been trying to do over these past months but I just cannot continue in this job anymore. To start with, my contract ended with the last match and the Federation never approached me for a renewal. What does that say? It says to me I’m not wanted. I am going to go and rest, spend some time with my family and then hopefully get another job where I am wanted. After the Afcon win, President Goodluck Jonathan intervened and sorted things out. What if he does this time? As much as I respect and appreciate the number one citizen of the country I am afraid that this time it is going to be difficult. I am totally done with some of these people. If you were the Sports Minister of Nigeria what is it you will do or try and put in place to make the job of the national team coach a lot easier? Make the Federation pay his salaries on time and those of his assistants. Build a training centre and facility for the national team to train. We never had anywhere decent to train. The Abuja National Stadium is filled with sand and the worst kind of sand. That means when someone goes to ground he will have skin wounds. I and my assistants spend our own money to buy training cones and some of the things we use for training sessions. In most countries of the world when a coach is hired he brings in his own coaching team. Well for two years now I have been told to pay the salary of my assistant Valery Houandinou, someone who has been with me from Togo through to Mali ‚Äì where those countries paid his salary alongside paying mine. In two and half years, I had no official residence. I stayed in a hotel. I had no official car. I thank God for Chief Mike Adenuga for those two cars he gave to me after the Afcon win. However, these federation officials will continue to trumpet that ‚Äúthey gave Keshi everything to succeed. Mali is one of the poorest countries in Africa but I was given my place of residence and an official car within three days of me taking on the job. I also had a house in Togo and was never owed salaries. What will happen to the young players you have built up into internationals as it means that Nigeria is losing out on the continuity that you staying on would have brought on? Well, there is a nucleus of a team to work with there so a new coach will have the players there. In my mind I could set out two equally strong squads with the players available to me. However, the new coach might come in and say that these players would not fit into his style and so it will be. Not going to be my problem again (smiles). Clearly your experience with Togo and Mali has helped you at this job? Oh, without a shadow of doubt. God took me to those countries to give me the experience of dealing with people. It is far more difficult to work in your own country I have just found out. When I qualified Togo for the Afcon and the World Cup I got their national honour and diplomatic passport. Such was their gratitude. They make you comfortable and of course results followed. God was awesome in taking me through that route. Did you take a risk with the squad you took to the tournament? I did not take a risk. From the training camp and from the friendly matches I chose the players I believed would give me what I wanted on the field. People say I took players to sell them and I laugh. Michael Babatunde has not even started |
A group known as the Concerned Citizens of Kano, CCK,has called on the Federal Government to set up a panel of inquiry into various occurrences surrounding the death of immediate past Emir of Kano, Dr. Ado Bayero. The group also demanded for probe into the violent protest that followed the appointment of the successor to the throne Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. Chairman of the group, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar in a statement in Abuja yesterday said, “the Concerned Citizens of Kano in its recent meeting has called on the Federal Government to set up a panel that would probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of the erstwhile Emir of Kano, Alhaji Dr. Ado Bayero.” He also noted that the probe is informed by the previous attack on the emir early in January, 2013 where he was almost killed ,adding that, “several incidences had happened to put him off by some unscrupulous elements to pave way for a new dynasty.” The group said Bayero’s 51 old reign came to an end with controversies after his death especially as it allegedly gathered that the state government did not use the successor list sent to him by the Kano Emirate Council Kingmakers. “This was the entrant of the controversy that trailed the appointment of the new Emir which we know was not a name among the ones sent to the state Governor. Immediately the new Emir was announced, a major protest and riots erupted in Kano City as people condemned the way the appointment came up,” the statement read in part. It therefore tasked the government on a critical assessment of the situation resulting to the Emir’s death and the subsequent appointment as a step to preserving the traditional dynasty of the Emirate Council, and returning peace to the people. Bayelsa State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mr. Furoebi Akene, yesterday, described as ‘unsettling’ the continued search for his aged mother, Madam Patimi Akene, abducted, penultimate week, by gunmen at Fonibiri in Southern Ijaw local government area of the state. Akene said the kidnappers, who initially demanded his resignation, later demanded N30m ransom which they reduced to N10m. He described as worrisome the kidnappers threat to cut off the head of his mother over his refusal to accede to the ransom demand. Akene spoke in Yenagoa when a group of journalists, politicians and other professionals, under the aegis of The Parliament, called at his residence. He said though the threat was made on telephone, he was not going to be intimidated. ”One of the kidnappers, who claimed to be the leader of the gang, threatened to kill my mother. He said he will cut off her head and deliver it to my house at INEC Road and the body at the village. Because of the difficulty at getting me to agree with their demand, they have stopped calling me to discuss ransom,” he said. Akene noted that because of his uncompromising stance, the kidnappers have started calling his younger sister to demand the ransom. He reported that the younger sister pleaded that they collect a million naira but the kidnappers declined insisting that such sum is not enough for fuel and feeding of the kidnapped septuagenarian. Akene recalled that when the news of the abduction got to him, he abandoned the World Surveyors Conference he was attending in Malaysia. ”When they demanded that I resigned from the present administration as the condition for my mother’s release, I told them that I am not a man out to sacrifice his mother for position,” he recalled. According to him, they allowed him to speak with her as a proof that they were holding her. ”They allowed me speak with her twice. The first time, she told me she was okay and I asked her if the kidnappers are Ijaws, she confirmed that they are. On the second occasion, they made my mother cry as a means to convince me of their seriousness. She was crying and begged me to secure her release and give them the money. ”They asked me to pay them the ransom. I told him I will not pay as I am not owing them. The last text I received was, ‘You have lost your mother’. Madam Patimi Akene, was abducted without any gunshot and whisked away by armed men numbering about six from her home close to the Ofonibiri community waterside at about 12 am penultimate Saturday. The Bayelsa State Police Command, through its image maker, Alex Akhigbe, DSP, assured that they were on the trail of the gunmen but declined further comment. The wave of bombings by suspected Boko Haram insurgents across the country continued at the weekend after 13 persons were killed in an attack in Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi State. 34 others were injured in the blast, according to Bauchi State Police Commissioner, Mallam Lawal Shehu. Shehu disclosed that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the attack. The Bauchi bombing came on the heels of the Abuja plaza attack on Wednesday which claimed 21 lives. lso at the weekend, a former Minister of Police Affairs, Alaowei Broderick Bozimo, called for the radicalisation of youths against Boko Haram. “Deliberate efforts should be made to energize the youths to work, it is their tomorrow that is being endangered not ours because we are already old. You will be amazed that when young people are empowered, they can betray some of their people in the Islamist group. As they recruit beggars, we too should recruit beggars. Radicalize the youths positively, the market associations; the youths should actually patrol the streets, let it be a mass movement thing, that is the only way out”, Bozimo told Sunday Vanguard in an interview. Yesterday’s bombing occurred in the red light district of Bayan Garin, specifically an hotel allegedly thronged by prostitutes, on Friday night. The area also has a large Christian population. An improvised explosive device (IED) was believed to have been planted in the hotel. A report quoted a survivor as saying the attackers wore military uniform. Sunday Vanguard learnt that the blast in the hotel was the second in two years. A source said the first bombing in the hotel took place in 2012 and left several people injured. The incident, which happened around 9.50pm, threw residents of the state capital into panic as traders and Okada riders abandoned their businesses and took cover. Confirming the blast, the state Commissioner of Police, Shehu, said efforts were being intensified to arrest other fleeing suspects. ”From the investigation conducted by the police, some suspected hoodlums were seen loitering around the brothel and the next thing that happened was an explosion”, he said. ”The area has been cordoned off and the scene secured by the Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit (EOD). ”The victims were rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBU) for treatment and corpses evacuated to the mortuary”. The police boss advised members of the public to always be security conscious by paying attention to persons and objects, particularly at motor parks, market places, schools, places of worship, shopping malls, eateries and hotels. “The police have put in place strategies to fight insurgency in Bauchi State by intensifying surveillance, intelligence gathering and working in collaboration with sister security agents to secure lives and property.” Speaking on the bombing, yesterday, Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sani Malami, said 34 injured victims were taken to hospital in the late hours of Friday out of which 17 with minor injuries were treated and discharged. ”There are 17 others with varying degree of injuries who are still on admission, but we are hoping that many of them would be discharged today (yesterday), while a few victims will have to go to the theatre because of the seriousness of their injuries”, Malami told journalists. . ”Unfortunately, 13 people were, so far, confirmed dead. 10 bodies were brought to hospital yesterday (Friday) night and three more victims died in the hospital. He explained that some victims rushed to clinics in Bauchi were transferred to the ATBUTH for proper attention. According to him, Bauchi is a peaceful state but quite unfortunate that the bombing happened. ”We are really shattered and heartbroken that this incident happened in Bauchi and pray that it will not happen again”, the commissioner said. ‘Shooting at random’ Meanwhile, a survivor, Ahmed Maidoki, told the News Agency of Nigeria that five persons in military uniform carried out the attack by detonating explosives and shooting at random. “We were just sitting down, watching highlights of the ongoing FIFA world cup at the viewing centre located in between the two story building of the hotel when five men dressed in military uniform strolled in”, he narrated.. “We thought they were security personnel, who came to relax as well. I noticed they all positioned themselves at the four corners of the hall. “The next thing I heard was an explosion, after which the arena was covered with thick smoke. Shivering, my friends and I sprawled on the ground. “We were trying to get out when the five men started shooting sporadically at any one who tried to stand up, and in the process, killing many of the survivors of the blast,” he said. Another witness, Usman Hassan, said he was just about to enter the hotel when the blast occurred and immediately ran away from the scene. “As soon as I was a bit far from the scene, I heard gun-shots. Few minutes later, a white Toyota Hilux vehicle zoomed out of the hotel on high speed with men wearing army uniforms”, he said. President Goodluck Jonathan has reiterated his determination to bring back the more than 200 Chibok school girls saying that his silence in the past was to avoid compromising investigations on the abductions. In a 514 word opinion piece article published in Friday’a edition of the Washington Post, President Jonathan regretted that his silence on the issue has been misconstrued by critics as a sign of weakness as he confesed that being a father, he is touched by the feelings of the parents of the abducted girls. In the article titled “Nothing is more important than bringing home Nigeria’s missing girls” the president said that the terrorism in Nigeria is not unique and that it was in that respect that Nigeria this month, alongside, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Britain and the United States established an External Intelligence Response Unit to share security information on such threats in West Africa. He added that he would in September propose to the United Nations to establish an international force to tackle the activities of such terrorists anywhere they are found. Saying he was not weak on the issue as portrayed, Jonathan said: “I have had to remain quiet about the continuing efforts by Nigeria’s military, police and investigators to find the girls kidnapped in April from the town of Chibok by the terrorist group Boko Haram. I am deeply concerned, however, that my silence as we work to accomplish the task at hand is being misused by partisan critics to suggest inaction or even weakness.” “My silence has been necessary to avoid compromising the details of our investigation. But let me state this unequivocally: My government and our security and intelligence services have spared no resources, have not stopped and will not stop until the girls are returned home and the thugs who took them are brought to justice. On my orders, our forces have aggressively sought these killers in the forests of northern Borno state, where they are based. They are fully committed to defending the integrity of their country.” “My heart aches for the missing children and their families. I am a parent myself, and I know how awfully this must hurt. Nothing is more important to me than finding and rescuing our girls.” “In September, I will urge the U.N. General Assembly to establish a U.N.-coordinated system for sharing intelligence and, if necessary, special forces and law enforcement to confront terrorism wherever it occurs.” Noting religious, political and ethnic cleavages that must be curtailed for Nigeria to fight off terrorism, he said: “In Nigeria, there are political, religious and ethnic cleavages to overcome if we are to defeat Boko Haram. We need greater understanding and outreach between Muslims and Christians. We also know that, as it seeks to recruit the gullible, Boko Haram exploits the economic disparities that remain a problem in our country.” “Something positive can come out of the situation in Nigeria: most important, the return of the Chibok girls, but also new international cooperation to deny havens to terrorists and destroy their organizations wherever they are — whether in the forests of Nigeria, on the streets of New York or sanctuaries in Iraq or Pakistan. Those who value humanity , civilization and the innocence of children can do no less.” |
Arequiem mass organised for the late Socrates of the Supreme Court, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa at his country home in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State was disrupted yesterday, when the first son of the former erudite judge, Charles Oputa, a.k.a Charley Boy prevented Governor Rochas Okorocha from paying tribute to his father. Eye witnesses said that the mass which was conducted by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Rt Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oguta, went on smoothly until Okorocha was permitted by the Bishop to pay his tribute to the fallen judge. However, Chief Okorocha, was stopped midway into his speech, by Charley Boy who was visibly infruiated with Kukah for granting the governor the permission to speak. He walked up angrily to the altar and snatched the micro-phone from the governor, to the embarrassment of all the dignitaries present. It was a disgrace to the governor. Among eminent Nigerians present at the church service included representative of President Goodluck Jonathan, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Governors Willie Obiano (Anambra), Theodore Orji (Abia); the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha and former governors of Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige and Mr Peter Obi respectively. Also present, were the former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim,, Senator Uche Chukwumerije and the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, the state Police Commsiioner, Almajid Ali and the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, for Oguta, Ikembuchukwu Abugu. The intervention of Bishop Kukah could not assuage Charly Boy’s anger as he insisted that no politician would take advantage of his father’s burial to score “cheap political” goals. He insisted that the Governor should not speak at the event. However, obviously embarrassed by Charley Boy’s action, the Governor and members his entourage hurriedly left the church service mid -way, despite entreaties from the officiating Bishop Kuka for them to stay on. It was gathered that Charly Boy’s action followed a recent statement by Government House, Owerri, to the effect that the Oputa family was given N20 million to assist it in the burial arrangements. Sources told Saturday Vanguard, however, that “the family never received a dime from either Okorocha or the state government, not to talk of the alleged N20 million said to have been made available to them,’’ as reported by a section of the media. Earlier in his sermon, Bishop who lauded the virtues of Justice Oputa, stressed that “to tolerate a son like Charley Boy by a man of late Justice Oputa’s reputation, is a measure of the greatness of the man.” He called on Nigerians to stand up in defence of justice and equity, adding that late Oputa had serious liking for the concept of justice and equity during his life time. ”Oputa before he died, was worried about the quality of Nigerian lawyers and judges because he believed in the judiciary as the last hope of the nation. Today, his legacies are beyond his immediate family,” Bishop Kuka said Meanwhile, the state government has described the incident that played out at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oguta, as “ugly and regrettable.” According to a statement by the Seniour Special Assistant, SSA, Media, to Governor Okorocha, Mr Sam Onwuemodo, “It is highly regrettable that the son of the late Justice, Mr Charles Emeka Oputa, aka, Charly Boy, threw caution to the wind and turned the church service into a political theatre that saw him acting or playing out the script he drafted in Abuja with some Imo politicians, who have remained cowed by the overwhelming popularity of Governor Rochas Okorocha.” Onwuemeodo insisted that the state government made “substantial financial input and also organized a special day of tributes for the late Justice Oputa at the expense of state government with Charly Boy also present with other members of the family. ”We condemn that ugly incident and also wish to advise politicians from the state to stop heating up the polity over power since God is the giver of power. In 2015, God will decide who will be governor of Imo State and when God decides that, there is nothing anybody can do about it.” He did not make to reference to the N20m said to have been given to the family.
