Foreign Affairs › Dutch King Willem-alexander Apologises For Colonial-era Slavery by id4sho(op): 9:43pm On Jul 01, 2023 |
Dutch King Willem-Alexander apologises for colonial-era slavery The monarch of the Netherlands asks for ‘forgiveness’ for his nation’s colonial past, saying he felt a ‘moral duty to act’. Dutch King Willem-Alexander apologized for the royal house's role in slavery Dutch King Willem-Alexander marks 160 years since slaves were freed in former colonies Dutch King Willem-Alexander has formally apologised for the Netherlands’ involvement in slavery, saying he felt “personally and intensely” affected. The king was speaking at a ceremony on Saturday marking the 160th anniversary of the legal abolition of slavery in the Netherlands, including its former colonies in the Caribbean. “I’m standing here in front of you as your king and as part of the government. Today I am apologising myself,” Willem-Alexander said. “On this day we remember the Dutch history of slavery, I ask forgiveness for this crime against humanity.” He said racism in Dutch society remains a problem and not everyone would support his apology. The slave trade brought vast riches to his ancestors. The Dutch funded the so-called Golden Age of their empire and culture in the 16th and 17th centuries by shipping about 600,000 Africans as part of the slave trade, mostly to South America and the Caribbean. In December, Prime Minister Mark Rutte apologised on behalf of the Dutch state. The monarch acknowledged the apology saying “a start has been made” but also there was “still a long way to go”. ‘Moral duty to act’Descendants of slaves had called for the king to use Saturday’s ceremony at the Oosterpark in Amsterdam to apologise. In his speech broadcast live on national television, Willem-Alexander asked for “forgiveness” saying while nothing had been done about the past for a long time, “at some point, one feels the moral duty to act”. “The chains have truly been broken,” Willem-Alexander said to cheers and applause from thousands of onlookers at the national slavery monument. Slavery was formally abolished in Suriname and other Dutch-held lands on July 1, 1863, but the practice only really ended in 1873 after a 10-year transition period. A Dutch study released in June found the royal family earned 545 million euros ($595m) in today’s terms between 1675 and 1770 from the colonies, where slavery was widespread. The current king’s distant ancestors, Willem III, Willem IV and Willem V, were among the biggest earners from what the report called the Dutch state’s “deliberate, structural and long-term involvement” in slavery. Since the Black Lives Matter movement emerged in the United States, the Netherlands has embarked on an often difficult debate about its colonial and slave-trading past that turned it into one of the world’s richest countries. Reparatory justice? In 2022, King Willem-Alexander announced he was ditching the royal Golden Coach that traditionally transported him on state occasions because it had images of slavery on its sides. One side panel had a picture called Tribute of the Colonies depicting kneeling black people handing over produce such as cocoa and sugarcane to their white masters. While some European leaders have apologised for their country’s colonial past, others have refused to take that step. In January, French President Emmanuel Macron stated he will not “ask forgiveness” from Algeria for French colonisation, but hoped to continue working towards reconciliation. “It’s not up to me to ask forgiveness, that’s not what this is about, that word would break all of our ties,” he said in an interview. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also rejected calls to apologise and offer reparatory justice for victims of the British slave trade and imperialism, saying the attempt to “unpick our history” was not something the government would “focus its energy on”. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2023/7/1/dutch-king-willem-alexander-apologises-for-colonial-era-slavery© 2023 Al Jazeera Media Network

buygala: It was my most scary road experience till date...
But I have since made up my mind that even if na my mama I see wey enter my front with weapon for expressway bush, I go hit am without even stopping to spit.
I have a colleague who is near-death because of these useless people... Bus dude was travelling in was stopped by robbers around Lokoja Road at night.. Robbers ordered all passengers to lie on the road while they were searched and robbed.. A bus oncoming from the opposite direction which the robbers tiered to stop didn't stop, but sped on and ran over my colleague and other passengers who the robbers had lain down in the middle of the express... Man's legs and spine was crushed into raw meat and bone... Now we are wishing him death so that he can rest from all the pain and screaming..
On these roads, it's kill or be killed... You waka anyhow for express with weapon, people like me plenty wey ready to kill you saraaaa. Seconded, no time. |

buygala: Nearly ran into a herd of cows who walked into the express along Abuja Airport road around 2021..
Was doing around 170 or so, as I was late for a flight... The swerve-and-dodge cost me two brand new tyres....
That 2010 Accord's excellent brakes saved my life that day... No loss of control, no somersault or run-into-bush, but a lot of tyre-screeching and swinging around in wide circles for what seemed like an eternity.. Just a lot of burnt tyre rubber, and 60k spent replacing the burnt tyres.
2nd one was a human along Akoko-Akure Express around 1am sometime this year... Some nigga threw a log into the road to stop a oncoming commercial bus who I was behind.. Bus dodged the log, 2nd bus following it closely at high speed ran into log and ran into bush.. me too I saw log too late.. I reflex dodged log but faced about two dudes standing on the road shoulder holding long knives... I didn't stop to find if guys survived or not...Na dem sabi wetin dem hold long knife dey find for inside express-way bush for 1am....
I met up with the bus that escaped at the next army checkpoint...We told them what was going on behind us.. They then entered their hilux and went to clear that place and rescue those trapped by the robbers.... Since we discovered from buses coming from the opposite direction that the robbers' brethren were operating in front too, we waited at the checkpoint for the soldiers to come back from their clearance operation and do another clearance operation in the direction we were facing... Soldiers made no mention of any dead robbers, even though we heard series of gunshots when they went on that clearance
You no be soldier, you no be Police, you no be Custom, you no be Civil defence.. But you wear Ankara stand for expressway bush with long knife for 1am...As you no like yourself, who am I to care about your welfare? Road bandits |

Hardtotrust: Stealing, armed robbery, kidnapping etc likely to increase.
Any period of extreme economic hardship is likely to rebound with criminal consequences.
It's a simple economic principle. When it's too difficult for people to survive, taking up any of the aforementioned is inevitable.
Dears, except you are not living in the country or you live above the average in terms of earnings, you would understand that this period is a very tough one for Nigerians. You see people complaining bitterly. In the school environment, the staff, the students, the business people everybody complaining bitterly. When you enter the street, you see the worse. Hawkers, market men and women, taxi drivers and all complaining and murmuring bitterly.
In my neighbourhood, 3 car batteries have been stolen from people who parked their car outside the last one week. A week before last, a man parked his Lexus to see someone and before he returned in less than 20 minutes, the battery had gone. He shouted and ran around to no avail. It was even in broad daylight.
Yesterday, another man parked his car and entered a compound to see someone. Low and behold, before he came out, the car magically developed wings and flew away. It was like a movie scene but in reality. Till now, I dont know if the car has been recovered. The man almost went mad because of his Toyota Corolla.
This is to state that the decision of government has direct impact on the people. Therefore, don't rule like you are ruling trees in the forest whereby your decision has little or no effect on them. Whatever is the intention for removing subsidy, such decision is not something you take so carelessly. No palliatives and nothong to cushion the effects.
At least, if goverment had bought buses to states across the country to carry people at a reduced cost this period, that to some extent would have reduced the transportation effect but nothing of such. I may be wrong though, so please do you have any of such in your state/city?
Monetary gift. We learnt the governmemt was planning to give poor Nigerians certain amount of money to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal. Who has received here or knows someone who received? To the best of my knowledge, nothing of such. You just used your inaugural speech to declare "subsidy is gone" without assessing the impact of that declaration on the people.
This harsh economic situation would certainly increase crime. We had thought after all we went through under Buhari, a new goverment would give us some reliefs but here we are into more trouble.
Whoever is close to those in power should inform them that Nigerians are really suffering and the hardship will push them into crime including revolting.
To end it, I would say, help someone anytime you can. People really need any help they can get this period. The consequences on fuel increment from N189 to N550 is heavy on Nigerians, especially struggling Nigerians which incidentally I am one of them. God knows i really need help.
I rest my case. A comrade vehicle was stolen two hours ago |

Politics › Re: Why SE Must Build A Seaport Now by id4sho(m): 9:48am On Jun 30, 2023 |
proeast: Over the years, there has been arguments and politicization on the need to build viable seaports in the SE. However, it has become an urgent need now. With the removal of fuel subsidy, any region that is capable of landing fuel directly will become more viable than others. Fuel is cheapest in Lagos and most expensive in NE because of this factor. Also, Lagos needs to breath instead of the current suffocation there. Once there is a viable competition to Lagos, tension in that city will reduce. NC and NE will also benefit because it will make fuel and other imports cheaper in those regions.
Abia, Imo and Anambra States all have the potentials to build deep seaports that can berth large vessels comfortably! Before anyone decides to argue blindly, here are the facts on ground about ports in Nigeria and their positions:
1. Ibaka, Akwa Ibom state; 30 miles to Atlantic. 2. Lagos State; 50 miles to Atlantic. 3. P.H, Rivers State; 50 miles to Atlantic. 4. Onne, Rivers State; 60 miles to Atlantic.
Now compare all these ports to those in SE: 1. Osemoto, Imo State; 18 miles to Atlantic. 2. Oseakwa, Anambra state; 18 miles to Atlantic. 3. Obuaku, Abia State; 25 miles to Atlantic.
The most intriguing part is that the designated ports in Osemoto/Oseakwa axis offer the deepest natural ports as well as the closest to Atlantic, thereby making them potentially the most viable and easiest to maintain in Nigeria!
Any state in the SE that first builds a viable port will automatically become the richest in the region, but also one of the richest states in Nigeria. You mean the rivers in the south east won't require dredging |
