Why is this the case? Here’s what the Constitution stipulates:

The tenure of Local Government officials is determined by State legislation, but democratic principles must be honored.

According to Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution, Local Government Councils must be elected through a democratic process.

While the State Assembly can legislate on the operations of councils, it cannot arbitrarily extend a chairman’s term without a legitimate legal justification.

The Constitution rejects undemocratic tenure extensions.

Section 1(2) clearly states that Nigeria must function according to the Constitution, thus no official can retain power outside the bounds of the law.

Section 7(1) emphasizes that Local Government leaders should be elected.

The Supreme Court has already determined that such extensions are not permissible.

The Supreme Court has ruled that State Governors and Assemblies do not have the power to dissolve, extend, or alter the terms of elected Local Government officials.

In the case of Governor of Ekiti State v. Sanmi Olubunmo (2011), the court established that once a chairman's term concludes, elections must take place to select a successor.

So, what is the appropriate course of action?

When a Local Government Chairman’s term is over, there are only two lawful alternatives:

Conduct new elections, as mandated by law.

Form a caretaker committee, but only if permitted by the state’s Local Government Law.

Any other approach—particularly extending the term without holding elections—would be unconstitutional and could face legal challenges.

After I narrated all these things to her.... She said I was very entitled. That church money isn't my money ... I blocked her. I was an usher for 3yrs and I devoted all my time and energy for church events.... I travel to usher in burials and marriages as church members would beg the church to use the church ushers rather than paying for ushers. And I miss my Saturday lectures and reading timetable.... I was t doing that to get things in return but church is supposed to come through for it's members because that's the essence of the gathering....
