chapter seven

Ichendu is seen in the Forest at night, he wore a black wrapper,there was a rooster in his hand,he chanted has he walked deep into the forest, he got to a large iroko tree and stopped, he chanted and walk round the gigantic tree.

Ichendu: iroko! The silent demon that manifest his own glory in silence, I call on you, please answer me* he twisted the rooster's neck until it gave way.

he then drain the blood on the iroko base, immediately he did this he heard a rustling of winds and howling, there was great noise and then everything was silent again.

He moved away from the tree and stood far off,he could see a shape lurking under the shadows of the great tree.

Ichendu: iroko I greet you


iroko: *with a wavery voice * son of man,you are here again


Ichendu: iroko,I need your help,my land would be going to war tomorrow, I want you to put fear in the heart of our enemies,let them shiver when they sees us,let them lose courage and be weak..

iroko: and what would be my gain?

Ichendu: state your wish.

iroko: I want your wife foetus

Ichendu:* afraid* no! never! I can't give that, ask for any other thing

iroko: your life

Ichendu: my life?..

iroko: yes, your life

sometimes he wish he had left him to drown that day, he doesn't know why,but he is always suspicious of oyeku, ever since he knew he is an Oyo, but seeing the devotion and love he had shown for Aro land, he is trying to force himself to trust him as he would trust an Oyo.


Aro village

It was night, chilo laid on her mat,she could not sleep, she kept on thinking about oyeku and what Ome had said, " oyeku loves you,he spies on you" she hated the feeling she is having right now,she felt weak and confused.

Is this how love is? no I can't love any boy now,she said to herself, I was just too excited and hot today,tomorrow everything would be alright, she thought, she tried to force herself to sleep,gradually sleep took her away.


oyeku's hut

it was night

oyeku was dreaming, he saw himself in a thick and awful forest, birds were chirping, there was an evil aura emanating from Everywhere, he was feeling an invisible presence, he heard the breaking of twig behind him but he could not turned around.

his body had become rigid, he could feel the presence of someone behind him, he could feel it as coldness engulfed him,there was a pressure on his back he felt like screaming, but he could not.



Then he heard a whisper " all you have will be gone,your sister, your brother, your love,your family and your humanity, then you will have everything "


he woke up,and lit the lamp, he was really afraid, what kind of dream is this? his mat was a bit wet,he had been crying in the dream and his tears had soaked his mat,he could not go back to sleep.

I have to tell baba this dream, he told himself, just then he heard a bird shrieked, it was a long,eerie sound,oyeku heart beat fast,what kind of night is this? what type of demon could be roaming this night?

he moved towards his skirt where he hanged them,and drew out his dagger, he fixed his gaze on the door of his hut and waited for movement, he was still holding the dagger firmly, when sleep overpowered him.

Aro village

Uzo is preparing some protection charm in his fetish room, there were monkey skull and half split calabashes hanging from the smoke painted roof, the floor of the room is covered with rafia grasses.

He was burning a substance in a black pot,smoke was everywhere, he can be heard reciting incantation:

He ended the incantation and gave offering to Ogun

Uzo:* he poured wine on some pieces of metal* Ogun this is palm wine drink and be drunk * he poured palm oil* Ogun this is palm oil let your house be red,with the blood of your foes,0gun grant me favour and victory* he ended the ritual and stepped out of the room,it was evening, he sat outside his hut to received some fresh breeze.


Uzo had developed great love and zeal for the supernatural, Aro land has been blessed with great knowledge of metaphysics,but only those who search are those who know, Uzo is one of the searchers.

Ayeni was the greatest warrior of his time, he is famous for his ability to hypnotise his foes and make them do stupid things that they would not have done in their right sense.

He is also known as an unbendable wrestler, no one had ever thrown him down, his opponent would successfully grab his waist but to lift and throw him down becomes impossible, Ayeni becomes very heavy,his opponent would grunt and heave to lift him,but the more they try the heavier he becomes, then suddenly Ayeni would hold his opponent by the head and he would go dizzy, before his opponent knows what is going on,his back is already on the floor and Ayeni had won.


Ayeni was respected by the Aro community, he was made the war chief, by Ekun, but Ayeni grew tired of shedding blood, so he gave up his office and became a farmer,anytime Ayeni is mentioned, Aro people will say " edakeda" which means " strange man "

suddenly she discovered that everyone is gazing up the shallow cliff,she followed suit and saw oyeku, she and everyone watched as he threw his spear down, and began to climb down, he landed with a bounce as he picked his spear and started running to secure his position among his group, everybody were struck with his physique, he is taller than anyone in Aro,dark,he had the darkest eyes that pierced the soul of every looker,his muscles rippled as he moves,he was covered with sweat,which makes him more appealing to the sight of all the onlooking maidens,he looks like s god.

The girls gossip had shift to oyeku, they are drooling, chilo was no exception, many times she had involuntarily developed crush for oyeku, but she always manage to break the spell,but today the feeling had returned, the boy is really different, she thought
