Politics / How President Buhari Will Be Remembered – Ebikapade Amasuomo, Phd by Idonmakeam: 9:05pm On May 21, 2022
https://whistletimes.com/how-president-buhari-will-be-remembered-ebikapade-amasuomo-phd/

A public commentator, Ebikapade Amasuomo shared his opinion with Whistle Times on how President Buhari will be remembered after his time in Aso Rock.

I stopped talking about President Buhari’s administration when I observed that my friends at the other side (mainly ethnic sycophants) are not open to constructive criticism. As we approach another May, 29th, I am compelled to examine the mood of the country and perhaps speak the minds of the general public. The sole aim of this article is to speak truth to power with the hope that they will listen and make amend before it is too late.

I want to congratulate every Nigerian living in this country, you have survived the worst. It can only get better going forward. President Buhari has served seven out of his eight years in office. Indeed it hasn’t been easy for anybody. For the first time in two decades, even the so called ‘big men’ in Nigeria feels the pinch.

President Buhari’s administration has been one of the most difficult times in Nigeria’s recent history. Of particular concern is the death and destruction that increased drastically shortly after his becoming president in 2015. Unlike during Jonathan’s presidency where BokoHaram held sway in the Northeast, with occasional bombings in Abuja, this time, the whole country seem to be engulfed with insecurity. Loss of lives and properties seem to have spread to the Southeast, Northwest, North-central and Southwest.

If President Buhari accomplished anything as a president, those accomplishments may have been overshadowed by the large scale killings and loss of lives that has greeted his administration. In the North-central state of Benue, the killings were very well publicized and gory pictures of pregnant women slain are difficult to forget.

The South-eastern region of the country was largely peaceful prior to 2015, now the region has a militant group that enforces operation ‘sit at home.’ The group is more or less involved in guerrilla warfare in the region, with several prominent southeast and northerners killed. The group first began operation as a none violent group, however, with the high handedness, killings and harassment, it has now grown into a full blown militant group. The region also continues to witness farmers-herders clashes with huge death tolls.

People now hold their breath while travelling through states in the south-west as bandits are known to operate freely along some corridors in the southwest region. Even notable people are not spared; Nigerians remember the travail of papa Olu Falae who was kidnapped at his farm in Ondo. His farm was also set ablaze at some point. The daughter of a notable Afenifere’s leader was killed in the same Ondo, likewise the brother of Omoyele Sowore who was gunned down by bandits along the same zone. Several other Nigerians have also been killed in the same Southwest, particularly in Oyo state as well as Lagos where EndSars protesters were gunned down by law enforcement agencies.

In the north central, Benue witness missive killings and destruction, other states like Plateau, Kogi , Nasarrawa have also had pockets of killings . A notable state in the Northwestern region is Kaduna where ethnic violence has continued unabated; Zamfara and Katsina have also continued to witness bandit attacks.

Aside the killings, majority of Nigerians have had to watch as food prices increased astronomically to even double or tripled their pre-Buhari price. Poverty and unemployment continue to wax strong in the country. In 2018, the World Poverty Clock announced that Nigeria surpassed India as the world’s poverty capital, with around 87 million people living in extreme poverty.

The massive increase in crimes and criminality is likely as a result of the dramatic rise in poverty. Just a few days ago, it was reported by many dailies that USD ($) to Naira exchanged at about 600 Naira to a dollar. Indeed, the country has seen some extremely difficult time.

Without a doubt President Buhari came with the mindset of turning Nigeria around in a positive direction however, it is clear now that Nigerians expected too much from the president. Unless, the president quickly address key aspects of the economy and put adequate measures in place within the next twelve months, he may not be remembered on the bright side of history.

It is not too late, twelve months is a lot of time to turn around the situation of this country. The president can become a unifier by calling elders from across the country together with a view to reconcile the nation. Igbo elders can be used to prevail on IPOB while prominent northerners including Gumi, Aminu Masari and others who have reached out to bandits at one time or another can be used to prevail on them. Nigeria need peace now more than ever before, no nation can experience development in the midst of chaos and insecurity. Investors will not come until we put our nation together. I call on President Buhari to explore the path of dialogue and negotiation in order to save the country and his image.

Romance / Bitter Betrayal: How I Narrowly Escaped Death And Rape - Whistle Times by Idonmakeam: 10:36pm On Nov 14, 2021
https://whistletimes.com/bitter-betrayal-how-i-narrowly-escaped-death-and-rape/

A young Nigerian lady popularly referred to on Twitter as EbubeNna @Grace_undiluted, who took to Twitter on the 9th of May, 2021 to vent her anger at a friend she was helping with accommodation has narrated her near death experience in the hands of the same friend and those she organized to gang rape her. In her post on the 9th of May, she pointed out the insensitivity of her female friend squatting with her. The friend who she was accommodating had some housing challenges. Hence, she took her in. However, the squatter turned out to be an ungrateful fellow. In her post, she wrote ”Some human beings don’t know what boundary is. I accepted to keep you in my house just for you to invite your boyfriend from a state 8 hours away with no plans of lodging. Now I either share a room with you and your man or leave my room to go look for someone to squat with or be tagged wicked, insensitive and unkind. Wow!!”

Continuing she explained how she had to scramble round to get a place to sleep due to her friend’s insensitivity, in her post she said “As at 10:40pm last night, I was out calling friends just so I can sleep at their place meanwhile I have a house, a bed and honestly didn’t want to react then because I was very upset. Just got home now and met them balanced on my bed.” After the event in May, she eventually left her accommodation for the squatter. However, in a bizzer turn of event, she returned to Twitter to narrate her near rape and death experience in the hands of the same squatter and her boyfriend.

Read her story below: On Friday 12/11/2021, past 8pm, I was in my bathroom having a bath when I heard footsteps in my balcony, I paused for a minute and listened to the footsteps approach my door so I asked who it was and Bukky, a girl that lived in my house for years and early this year, I left the house for her answered. I was shocked because she rarely comes around and even if she wanted to, she usually calls first. I told her to come in that I was having a bath. We exchanged pleasantries and I asked why she came around and she told me that she just wanted to check up on me. That was awkward but I didn’t say. She asked if I was alone and I said yes she asked again if my sister isn’t back and I told her yes, that she will be back but it’s not yet time. She said alright, I just wanted to check on you and she left while I was still having my bath.

After having my bath, I walked straight to my fridge where I kept my phone because the electricity went off while I was in the bathroom even before the lady came in. Picking up my phone and turning to my wardrobe I heard footsteps again at the balcony so I asked again, who it was but no one answered. I asked continuously but no one answered so I went to the door to jam it while telling the person to stay out that I was naked. Trying to jam-lock my door, the person pushed it back and I saw a masked face (not with face mask but with a piece of clothe) so I repeatedly asked who are you, what do you want while I drag the door with them. At some point, I stopped asking and started screaming for help calling my neighbor who was seeing a movie in her room with an earpiece and her door was locked. They pushed me into the room, to my bed and one was repeatedly hitting me.

When I realized what was about to happen, I started fighting harder, I got up, made it to my door which of course they didn’t know how to jam as it requires prior knowledge to Jam and I ran out miraculously straight to My neighbor’s door and kept calling her to help. They caught up with me in split seconds and the beating continued while trying to drag me inside. Apparently, they were misinformed. They were told that no one was in because my male neighbor who is a lecturer traveled earlier that day and because the other lady was in with her door locked and no sign of light, Bukky felt I was alone and that was the information they were working with. My neighbour’s friend who was sleeping heard the noise, woke up and taped her (my neighbor) they opened the door. When they (attackers) saw that someone was in, they quickly hit me with a pestle like wood, I collapsed and they ran out the gate. My neighbor and her friend dragged me into her room and tried helping with ice (I guess). Minutes later, I saw myself sitting and the house was filled with crowd.

My Dad was contacted, he asked them to take me to the hospital, sent some money while he tried getting a flight ticket from Lagos. I asked my neighbor to call my doctor after which she asked for help to get me to my room so I can get dressed. Getting to my door, I noticed a black sweater so I picked it up (it reeked of weed) then I found the piece of clothe that one of them used as face mask and I was shocked. It was a piece of my bed sheet in the house I left for Bukky and I recognized it. We gathered all the attackers left behind and went to the police. The police gave us a form to fill, after which we went to the hospital. With the information, they decided it was best to go to Bukky’s place. Getting there, she was asked about the bed sheet, she claimed she gave it to her boyfriend. They found the pillow case and when she was brought in for questioning, she admitted the bedsheet was hers and identified the boys. Apparently one is her boyfriend and he just got out of prison where he was being remanded for a different crime.

Fejoku:

Before responding to this appealing write up, let me first correct the wrong statement in bold.
Igboland is emphatically the richest in onshore crude oil in Nigeria. Igboland has over 15 oil producing LGAs cumulatively in Nigeria from Rivers, Delta, Abia, Imo and Anambra states. No ethnic group can beat that. Therefore, let no man ever make the comment that Igbos have no oil.
Now to the write up itself, the writer did his best but the truth is that Igbo youths have decided already on a separate future for Igbos from Nigeria. Nigeria has no good plans or future for us so why should we waste time believing in something that is designed to suppress us? It's just common sense that we shun Nigeria entirely and focus on building a separate existence. Our minds are made up already. There's no going back on Biafra.

Rivers? how? they do not want to identify with you, yet you own the old in Rivers? grin grin

Politics / Igbo Exit From Nigeria, An Irrevocable Loss – Ebikapade Amasuomo by Idonmakeam: 3:57pm On Sep 11, 2021
https://whistletimes.com/igbo-exit-from-nigeria-an-irrevocable-loss-ebikapade-amasuomo/

An environmental consultant, social critic, activist and advocate for good governance in Nigeria, Ebikapade Amasuomo, shared his opinion with Whistle Times on the agitation by a section of Igbos to secede from Nigeria. The activist said, ”During the Biafra War, the Nigerian government confiscated bank accounts belonging to Igbos.

After the war in 1970, the Nigerian government gave every Igbo person with a bank account the sum of twenty pounds as a grant to start a new life, therefore, the Igbos lost funds in Nigerian banks in return for a twenty pounds grant. In the same vein, Igbos who had properties in other parts of the country had their properties seized especially in Rivers State where thousands of Igbo properties in Port Harcourt were auctioned off to locals due to perceived dominance of Igbos in Port Harcourt.

Apart from financial and property losses, several Igbos were killed, many young people with potentials lost their lives. Some of the young people killed could have gone on to be great men and women. Despite all these losses, Igbos are a formidable force in today’s Nigeria. They are one of the top two most prosperous tribes in Nigeria with almost every two villages producing at least one or two millionaires.

Ebikapade Amasuomo added that outside Nigeria, out of every ten Nigerians making the country proud, an investigation will always reveal that four out of the ten are Igbos while another four will be Yoruba and the remaining two from various parts of the country. In Nigeria today, some of the biggest banks are owned by Igbos, they are prominent in the nation’s entertainment industry, sports, academics, aviation sector, small and large scale manufacturing, media and a host of others. Their role in commerce and the informal sector across the country cannot be overemphasized.

The Igbos essentially rebuilt a nation with a grant of twenty pounds each. This shows the resilient nature of Indigbos, one wonders what could have become of the Igbos had Biafra not happened. Igbos live peacefully in every parts of Nigeria plying their trade and making money under extremely difficult circumstances.

The advocate for good governance further added that as an Ijaw man watching events in Nigeria, he believes that what Nigeria needs to survive is Indigbos and not crude oil. He said, the Igbos do not have crude oil nor political powers but they are more prosperous than those with political power and crude oil. Ebikapade said, what we must do now as a nation is to support and encourage Igbos so as to accelerate our quest of becoming the next China. Biafra and Igbo exit from Nigeria will be an irrevocable loss to Nigeria, therefore, we must begin the process of ensuring that the likes of Peter Obi, Kingsley Moghalu, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and thousands of brilliant Igbo technocrats out there are given a chance at the national level come 2023 general election. I do not know these individuals personally but without a doubt they have proven themselves as worthy leaders in their private and public endeavors.

We must therefore not push the Igbos to the wall as their exit from this nation will be a costly mistake for hundred of years to come.

https://whistletimes.com/black-live-matters-blm-protest-and-the-2020-presidential-election-ebikapade-amasuomo/

Emergence of Black Live Matters (BLM) and Historical Race Relations
The shooting of a black teenager, Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida early 2012 by George Zimmerman and the events that followed led to the formation of Black Life Matters.

Black Life Matters movement is one of the most powerful civil right organizations in the United State. The movement began after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who admitted fatally shooting Trayvon Martin after claiming self defense.

Before that event, the United State has always had difficult race relations especially between whites and black people. After the abolition of slave trade, African American groups began demanding justice, fairness and equity for former slaves and their descendants. Some levels of success were recorded by those early groups. However, perceived marginalization of African Americans remained till this day. People of African origin in the United State argue that, institutionalized racism are directed towards them and that equal opportunities elude them.

The murder of Trayvon Martin and the eventual emergence of a movement to demand for better treatment did not come as a surprise to many. After the murder, one option available to African Americans was to complain, mourn the death and do nothing or allow the status quo to remain.

These options would have meant the death of many more African Americans. As Gallagher, et.al (2018) pointed out in an article, protest movements have history of forcing difficult conversations in order to enact social change. Hence, African Americans saw the death of Martin as an opportunity to press for social change through protests.

At the time of his murder, Trayvon Martin was a student at Miami High School. He had been visiting relatives in the Sanford area of Florida. At the time of his shooting, Martin who was dressed in a hooded sweatshirt had been watching TV and playing video games with his other relatives; he briefly left them to purchase fruit juice and candy from a convenient store within the neighborhood.

On his way home, the hooded teenager was spotted by George Zimmerman. Mr Zimmerman called the local Police authority to report a suspicious teen in the neighborhood. He was then advised against confronting the teenager. Zimmerman was said to have ignored Police advice. According to Benjamin Crump, a lawyer who represented the Martin family, Trayvon Martin was on the phone with his 16 years old girlfriend at the time of his murder. The girlfriend confirmed she heard a voice in the background asking Martin about his identity and why he was in the neighborhood, an altercation ensured and Martin was shot in the chest. Mr. Zimmerman was charged but was acquitted and cleared of murder.

Following the outrage that greeted his acquittal, various activists, civil society groups began protesting across the country. The groups soon adopted an online hashtag “Black Lives Matters.” The organizers of the protests argued that Trayvon Martin was only one in a series of other needless murders of young blackmen as well as racism across the country. They particularly drew similarities between Trayvon Martin murder and that of a black teenager in 1955. Emmett Till had been visiting relatives in Mississippi when he was accused of flirting with a white woman, Carolyn Bryant. Bryant was working as a store attendant when Emmett Till visited the store to get groceries; he was accused of flirting with the store attendant. Her husband and another relative gruesomely murdered Emmett Till and then proceeded to dumping his body in a river.

The murder caused national outrage amongst African Americans and subsequently led to series of civil right movements. One notable figure involved in the protests of Emmett Till death was Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., who delivered several remarkable speeches across the United States. On the eight anniversary of Till’s murder, Martin Luther King Jr delivered an iconic speech, “I Have a Dream” in Washington.

Brief Overview of Results and Achievements of BLM Protests
However, many groups in the United States have argued against the activities of Black Life Matters movement, critics say the group has made little or no impact since its formation compared to early civil right movements. Some say the group activities are disruptive to the average Americans and that the group should be disbanded.

A critical examination of the group’s activities with a view to determining successes recorded and how the movement has influenced the United State revealed that a sharp similarities between the Black Life Matters movement and the civil right movements of 1950s to 1970. One wonders what life in the United State would have been for average African Americans without civil rights activism between 1950 and 1968. It was the civil right movements of that era that highlight the difficult race relations in the United State to the world. The civil right movements were successful in appealing to the consciousness of Americans and world leaders to the plight of Africa Americans.

Since its formation, the Black Matters Movement has grown and gained international momentum. Various news media and scholarly articles have been written about the group and whether or not the movement has achieved its aims and objectives. In order to determine the impact of the movement, it is important to examine what the organization set out to achieve. In an article by the Washington Post, June 11, 2020, Andrea Benjamin pointed out the main purpose of Black Life Matters protest, she pointed out that one of the key goals of the protest is to sway public opinion on how African Americans are treated in the United State. One might then ask, how have they faired with this goal? It was revealed that since the movement begun protesting and pressurizing state institutions in 2012. In the aftermath of the protest conducted by the BLM movement that greeted the killing of Gorge Floyd, a poll conducted shows that almost 70% of Americans believe that Gorge Floyd murder signals a broader problem within law enforcement, compared with 29 percent who consider it to be an isolated incident. This finding represents a significant leap and show of support or understanding to the plight of African Americans amongst members of the public compared to polls conducted some years earlier. A 2014 poll had shown that that only 43 percent of Americans felt that the killing of unarmed African American men in Ferguson, Mo., and New York City signified a broader problem (compared with 51 percent who thought they were isolated affairs). Furthermore, most Americans 74%, express support for Black Life Matters protests. With such massive public support, it goes to show that it is only a matter of time before authorities in the state begin to make massive reforms to address police brutality and other social issues affecting black people. It is important to point out that in 2016 only 43% of Americans supported the movement whereas in 2020, findings from, the Atlantic, September 3 2020 shows that as a result of the continued pressure and protests by the Black Life Matters movement, there is a new wave of yearnings for cultural and political change sweeping across the country. In many neighborhoods across the country, portraits of African American victims of police brutality are pasted on building walls. According to the report by the Atlantic, signs that read black lives matter are posted in residential and storefront windows, and the words have been painted onto city streets. Statues that venerate racists, segregationists, and Confederates have come tumbling down. Brands and corporations have rushed to acknowledge systemic racism, ranging between strong and lukewarm commitments to addressing structural inequities (McFadden, 2020). Even government institutions are taken measures to show solidarity with black communities across the country. For instance, one City Council (Minneapolis), in response to police brutality of African Americans voted to completely re-organize its police department. Similarly in Wisconsin and California, some school districts are also showing support by calling off police contracts. In order not to be left out of the show of solidarity and support, government at the national level responded to pressure from demonstrators by signing an executive order to demand for police reform across the country.

In a ceremony after the outcry that trailed the death of George Floyd, President Trump signed the executive order on Tuesday, the 16th of June, 2020. The order require police departments to achieve better standards on the use of force and also placed a ban on the use of chokeholds by police officers except in cases where their lives is under imminent danger. The order also calls for better trainings and the involvements of social workers as well as mental health professionals in order to avert or reduce needless fatalities amongst vulnerable groups. To that end, it is obvious that the Black Live Matters movement has been very successful in their pursuit. Gallagher, et.al (2018), reported that the Black Life Matters movement has indeed amplified the plight of African Americans with regards to police brutality and extrajudicial killings of Black people in America.

However, despite the continuous protests and pressure from the group, it appears to many as though police brutality is continuing unchecked. Some critics have argued that the situation with police brutality is not better getting any better despite the effort of the movement. However, very little or no data exist to support the notion that cases of police brutality amongst black Americans are rising. It is likely that but for the effort of the movement, many more black Americans may have died in the last few years. Media coverage, the rise of Social Media for information dissemination and the general sensitization of the populace to issues of police brutality targeted at black people are factors that contribute to the notion that cases of police brutality are rising despite efforts of the Black Life Matters movement. It is likely that individual cases receive more attention now than they would have 20 years ago as information on incidents of police brutality are widely distributed and reported to a wide range of audience through various platforms that are now available. Therefore, it is natural that it may seem as though the situation is not getting better. However, it is difficult to categorically conclude that despite the efforts of BLM movements police brutality has remained at the same level or has increased. This is not to downplay the problems facing African Americans. Without a doubt more black people die in encounter with law enforcement than other races in the United State. Nonetheless, it is likely that the numbers may have been higher without concerted efforts from activists and movements such as the Black Life Matters. Hence, it can be argued that the movement has helped reduce police brutality amongst black people and also influence the state positively by forcing conversation on race and culture in the United State.

Emergence of Kamala Harris as Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate
Whilst it may not be entirely correct to attribute the emergence of Kamala Harris as a Vice Presidential candidate to the Black Live Matters movement, the role of BLM movement in her emergence however, cannot be dismissed. The group indirectly influenced the choice of the Democratic Party to pick a black candidate through their persistent advocacy.

Over the years BLM movement argued and pushed a narrative that Black people are underrepresented in the United State. They successfully highlight the suffering of black people and the fact that people of colour are not as privileged as their white colleagues. Hence, in order demonstrate genuine effort towards uniting the country and be widely accepted, it is only natural that Joe Biden reach out to minority communities by picking someone from amongst them. As a result of the police brutality, the black community seems to have the sympathy of Americans. Hence, the momentum favored African Americans politically. A closer look at Kamala Harris campaign shows that she constantly identifies with her black heritage as well as her Indian heritage. Her emergence as a Vice Presidential candidate cannot be separated from the narratives of how Black Americans are underrepresented in many strata of the American society.

From the foregoing, it is safe to conclude that the efforts of Black Lives Matters movement paid off as the plights of black Americans have been highlighted across the world. News and images of civil disobedience and protests organized by the group are shown across the world. Amateur footages of police brutality are shared and pushed across several Social Media sites by BLM activists and their sympathizers. The group gained momentum and sympathy from many Americans. In a bid to effect changes quicker, the movement is fast aligning with political parties. Pressure from the group has led to the signing of an executive order on police reform and it is likely that many more reforms will follow in the years to come as a result of the persistent protest and pressure.

Politics / Why We Attempted Fleeing Nigeria – 58 Medical Doctors by Idonmakeam: 6:02pm On Jul 11, 2020
https://whistletimes.com/2020/07/11/58-medical-doctors/

A few days ago, the Nigerian Immigration Service prevented about 58 medical doctors from boarding an aircraft to the United Kingdom. The privately chattered aircraft with registration number ENT 550 was already at the airport waiting to convey the doctors out of the country.

However, immigration officials were suspicious of their motive to leave the country at a time when Corona Virus was ravaging Nigeria. Whistle Times correspondent gathered that the rate of new infections in the country is still increasing and as at the time of this report, Nigeria has recorded over 30,000 cases. Lagos State particularly is the hardest hit. It was therefore shocking to many Nigerians when the doctors were caught trying to sneak out of the country without following due process.

After the incident, the Nigerian Immigration Service released a press statement saying:
“The 58 medical doctors were refused departure in line with Section 31 subsection 2a and b, on powers conferred on the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service by the Immigration Act 2015, to prohibit departure of any person under the conditions stated in the Act. They were refused departure as 56 out of the 58 had no visa for the United Kingdom. The Immigration service said:

“The chartered flight approved for landing in Nigeria was to carry 42 medical doctors for a training program but they were 58 with only two having visa for entry into UK, a situation that calls for refusal of departure”

“The Nigeria Immigration said, the service cannot allow persons groups of well-educated Nigerians who should know the procedures for travelling out of their country and the requirements, which include having a valid visa for entry into a destination country to leave.

Whistle Times reporter’s effort to speak to the affected doctors proved abortive. However, some doctors who spoke to Whistle Times said the medics may have been fleeing the country to the United Kingdom for the purpose of working in that country. Whistle Times investigation reveals a conspiracy theory around the aborted trip.

Investigation shows that an average Nigerian doctor do not earn much in the country. Therefore, it is almost impossible for the 58 medical doctors to have arranged a private jet from the United Kingdom with their paltry income in Nigeria.

Generally Nigeria, do not pay professionals adequately, except politicians. Earnings are generally low, no matter how many years you take to develop your skills and education. On the average a fresh Nigerian medical doctor earn about 150,000 to 200,000 Naira in many government hospitals. Those in private hospitals are not that luck, they work very hard and go home with about 100,000 plus or minus. The salaries are increased every year as they grow in their career, however, the increments are not usually so much.

Whistle Times investigation suspects that the trip may have been initiated by a job agency or other powerful bodies in the UK looking for medical doctors to help with the ongoing effort against the global pandemic. It is very likely that a special arrangement may have been made with the UK immigration authorities to allow the doctors entry into the UK without visa.

Under normal circumstance, many enlightened Nigerians know that you cannot gain entry to the UK without a visa. Hence, there must have been some sort of assurance to the doctors. The reason why the doctors had no visa might not be unconnected with the fact that UK embassy is not currently processing visa applications. It should be recalled that when the number of Corona Virus cases started increasing in Nigeria, many embassies and western nations evacuated their citizens from the country in a bid to protect them. It is for this reasons that the doctors did not have travel visas.

It is not immediately clear how the Nigerian authorities will react to the development. What is clear however is that many Nigerian doctors want to leave the country to places where they can be adequately compensated. It is also clear that there are many countries that would temporarily put their laws aside to allow brilliant Nigerian doctors into their countries.

Romance / ASUU Kick As FG Ban Sex With Female Students by Idonmakeam: 4:32am On Jul 08, 2020
ASUU kicked as FG through the Senate pass a bill to stop lecturers from sleeping with female students. The law became necessary due to incessant reports of universities and other tertiary institution lecturers harassing female students for sex.

In many cases, women are made to exchange sex for grades in many universities across the country. Recall the case of a Masters degree student who recorded her conversation with one of her professors. The senior academician in Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Professor Richard Akindele made a request to have sex with the lady five times in order to upgrade her low grade, according to the audio recording of the conversation between the student and the teacher.

After the embarrassment, OAU invited both the girl and professor Richard Akindele to appear at the university disciplinary committee in a bid to ascertain what transpired between both parties. The lecturer was eventually sacked and the student was also asked to leave the institution.

After many of such cases, the legislative arm of government began making a move to restore dignity at institution of learning across the country.

The bill was passed after third reading during plenary on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, shortly after the chairperson of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, presented a report to the chamber.

The bill was sponsored by Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, and co-sponsored by 106 senators after a string of high-profile cases of sexual harassment of students by their lecturers.

The bill prevents lecturers from having or demanding sexual intercourse from students or prospective students; making sexual advances; or directing another person to commit any act of sexual harassment.

The bill also prohibits lecturers from whistling, winking, stalking, making sexual jokes, or making sexually complimentary or uncomplimentary remarks about a student’s physique.

They are also prevented from grabbing, hugging, kissing, rubbing, stroking, touching, or pinching the breasts, hair, lips, hips, buttocks, or any other sensual part of a student’s body.

The bill also stipulates that a student cannot grant consent to a sexual relationship with a lecturer.

Upon conviction, offenders can be sentenced to a maximum of 14 years in prison, fined the sum of N5 million, or both.

According to Pulse, an online media, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) opposed the bill, claiming that it targets a particular community. Whistle Times investigation however showed that ASUU is also against lecturers harassing female students for sex. Nonetheless, the body believe that the current bill is discriminatory.

The Nigerian Senate said they will now forward the bill to President Buhari for assent so that it can become a law of the Federal Republic

Politics / Detailed Confession: How We Used Federal Might To Rig. by Idonmakeam: 10:48am On Jul 06, 2020

“Federal Might” perhaps, the most used phrase among opposition politicians in Nigeria. It means to bring the power of the Federal Government to bear. In Nigeria context, it means using the power of the Federal Government to perpetuate evil, mostly to rig elections and install wrong candidates into office forcefully. A strategy that usually short change ordinary voters and makes it impossible for them to change non performing or wicked leaders. In recent times, almost all elections conducted in Nigeria have been subjected to all manner of legal actions because losers do not believe in the process.

It was a surprised to many when Sen. Adeseye Ogunlewe a chieftain of APC, and one time minister of the Federal Republic under PDP, gave a chilling revelation of how elections are conducted and won behind fraudulently. He said, Federal Might play a key role. The one time minister said, he has contested elections so many times and he knows the strategies that politicians deploy. While answering questions on the Morning Show, a programme on Arise TV monitored by Whistle Times about the forth coming elections in Edo and Ondo states. The former minister was blunt. He said elections are hardly conducted in a transparent manner in the country due to federal might. Hence APC will win Edo and Ondo since they have the structure and machinery.

He added, APC will not behave like PDP who lost power. He said, it is not about the people that will queue to vote on election day. Rather it is about the skills of the politicians not the electorate.

He said the popular pattern is that after votes are counted at the pooling units, before the results get to the collation center at the ward, a different result would be prepared and submitted by the party who have INEC’s support. Then by the time the results get to the LGA, it will be a manipulated result then at the end of the exercise, the false result will be declared so that whoever is not satisfied with the process proceed to Election Tribunals.

The APC chieftain said, anybody that attempt to counter his confessions is not being truthful because, this fraudulent pattern he describe is the true nature of our elections.

He added that, the only way Nigerians can have proper elections is by having an electronic elections where results are transmitted directly from the pooling booth.

Crime / Serial Killer In Town: How I Killed All My Customers by Idonmakeam: 4:49pm On Jul 05, 2020
The story of Serial Killer Ndubisi Anthony will make you cry for humanity. People have completely lost their conscience. Humanity is gone especially in Nigeria. People are now openly feasting on each other in Nigeria. While politicians are looting the national treasury so that ensure ordinary Nigerians will not have healthcare, schools and reasonable infrastructure. Ordinary Nigerians are also busy killing themselves through poverty induced crimes such as kidnapping, armed robberies, banditry, money rituals among others.

Ndubisi Anthony, a serial killer arrested in Port Harcourt operates a shoe business in the city. The 52-year-old indigene of Ngo-Okpala in Imo State combine his shoe business with has kidnapping and killing his victims.

Anthony’s neighbours were shocked when he recently led a detachment of policemen to his well-built house situated in Rivers State. The house is a flat of about four bedrooms surrounded by a high fence. Within the compound is a pit dug very close to the fence and covered with columns of concrete. Innocent people who entered his compound thought it was a mere soak away pit. Only Anthony knew that the pit was not meant for sewage alone but also served as a burial ground for victims of his illicit trade.

The serial killer who is married with four children has a simple modus operandi, he makes friends with shoe suppliers or whole sellers. He will come across as a friendly, trust worthy business man. Once trust has been established, he will take goods on credit. When it is time for suppliers to be paid, he will invite them to his house then strangle them and throw their bodies into a sock away pit. In other cases, he will convince a supplier to take products to his house, he will make them feel at home, entertain them with drinks before strangling them and then take their products. He will then proceed to bury them in his sock-away pit.

When police men went to arrest the Serial Killer, his wife and two grown up children had escaped. Only the Serial Killer and his young children were home. People were shocked when the children demonstrated how their father use to strangle his victims indicating that his family were aware of how the bread winner of the family obtain bread for them.

A crime reporter with Whistle Times observed that many crimes in Nigeria revolves around economic issues. He therefore advises Nigerians to be extremely cautious. Do not visit anyone you recently met in their home, secluded office or in their cars at night. Every business transaction involving exchange of goods for money should be done in eateries, bars, motor parks or open places. As the rate of poverty continues to grow in Nigeria, the rate of crimes also grows and criminals are finding new ways of conducting their activities. Do be in a rush to meet people in their houses whether for business or pleasure. Beware!

It appears there is not end in sight for the suffering of Nigerians. Many Nigerians have argued that the country is increasingly becoming impossible to live in. The cost of everything has gone up significantly, transportation, food prices, fuel, exchange rate and many others. Nigerians have wondered where they went wrong. The suffering of ordinary Nigerians have increased dramatically. Just within the week, a Twitter user @harrisonmbamara shared pictures of a graduate from University of Ibadan who allegedly committed suicide citing difficulties and the hardship of being a Nigerian.

On the 1st of July, the Federal Government reverted the price of petrol to 141 and 143 Naira, an increase in price from 123 Naira. While Nigerians were still complaining. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) said henceforth, stamp duty will be paid on house rent and Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) in line with its new adhesive duty. The FIRS Director, Communications and Liaison Department, Mr Abdullahi Ahmad, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Thursday.

Whistle Times investigation shows that Nigerians are getting tired of being hit on every side. The name Nigeria is now almost equal to insecurity, yet, active steps are taken to ensure that people suffer as much as possible.

During the announcement of the new stamp duty, Ahmad urged Nigerians and other residents to ensure that documents pertaining to rent or lease agreements for their homes or offices, C of O as well as a list of other common business-related transaction instruments are subjected to authentication with the new FIRS Adhesive Stamp duty. He said this was necessary in order to give the instruments the force of law and make them legally binding on all parties involved in such transactions. He added that the new FIRS Adhesive Stamp Duty came into being at the official inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Audit and Recovery of Back Years Stamp Duties recently in Abuja.

It is not immediately clear how effective, this new introduction of Stamp duty will be. Nigerians however, hope that president Buhari will make haste and ensure that his promises of a better Nigeria is achieved as soon as practicable.
