I disagree. The little time I spent in us, I noticed Mexicans are everywhere, and they have huge influence on america. Mexicans brought Spanish to America. And the British colonized American not Spain
Sorry but I think you are wrong. I study in California and Spanish is widely spoken in most parts of America. Spanish-speakers colonized many areas that later became part of the United States before English-speakers. Most governments forms and even signs are bilingual. English & Spanish |

Olamsanj: Me: Good morning sir VO: Good morning! Please pass me your passport and your i20 Me: Passes him VO: Why are you going to the United States Me: I'm going to the United States to pursue my undergraduate degree in computer science at VIU VO: okay, what are you doing presently Me: I'm presently a computer science junior teacher at ...... VO: what year did you finish secondary school Me: Last year 2016 VO: why VIU Me: when I made a decision to study abroad, I went online to make some research on good schools and moreover my computer science teacher is an alumni VIU which he already told me so much about the school, their excellent faculty reputation, great research opportunities. I applied to the school, love their prompt response to my mail and all.......... VO: okay, so why computer science Me: ever since I was a kid, I have a great passion for computers. I love to play with computers and you know computer science deals with problem solving which is an essential skill for life...I love to study the hardwares and softwares used in solving problems in our scientific , social and business context and so on..... VO: how many schools did you apply to Me: two, I named them VO: okay, did you write any exam Me: no cuz the school didn't demand for any exam. No toefl, no get and all VO: okay, who's sponsoring your trip Me: my aunt VO: what's she doing Me: she's the regional branch manager at ...... Why VIU your answers given were not strong enough also are you sure your high school teacher is an alumni of VIU . You aunt is sponsoring your trip but she's your immediate elder sister When asked how closed she is to you you should have given strong reasons why shes choosing to spend millions in your education and not your direct parents. Sorry about your delay. |

CaptEColeJnr: And you type all those as if it is how its supposed to be The problem with you Nigerians is that you have taken the artificially-inflicted hardships in this country to be normal and even give yourselves praises for 'overcoming' it.
Pathetic. I refuse to be part of this useless education system If you have sufficient resources please by all means come to USA. YOU DIDN'T BORROW ANYTHING FROM NIGERIA. YOU OWE HER NO DUES. Write SAT and Toefl applying to schools that fit your score and funds. That's basically it. |

PDPGuy: Mehn, after seeing the salaries of some of these American tv personalities, I'm regretting not majoring in communications/journalism
Imagine Matt Lauer earning $25 million/year, Meflyn Kelly being paid $18 million/year, or Charissa Thompson of Fox Sports earning a $500,000 annual salary. It's crazy. Being telegenic and having huge ratings also helps. With your Nigerian Accent, You might not even get a Job, you would be forced to take up the only option of returning home and working for NTA.. Don't be deceived!! |

AfonjaBoston: I would have called you a hillbilly but fortunately you are not white.
You seem to be the one with the problem. Amn't telling you to be a "wannabe" but if you need things done and want to blend into your new community you have to debug yourself of that "African booty scratcher" mentality act sophisticated, show some swag (not sagging pants lol) remove that low self esteem that is holding you down because of your color or new environment.
Don't be a noreos or white people worshipper and be smart (brain and pocket wise)
You will not only be loved by Caucasians but you will also knack them wella to an extent some blacks will start to beef you.
Ok |

So I have a question for those who have been in the US for a while : Is it normal that you are been ostracized by the white folks like your classmates . I am not speaking racism, I have white friends and we talk and discuss on the regular but when it comes to like forming a group or having a partner everyone tries to avoid you. The latest was on our last field trip. Everyone had sitting partners and I was left to sit alone . Even my "so called friends. Is this a normal experience or it's just me ? |

imperiouxx: Still converting? This is the first thing you need to stop doing once you started living in US. If you're the type that cut low, then get a $35 clipper and a mirror and start doing it yourself. It will save you $27 for every 2 weeks. I try to resist the temptation of not converting each time. But there's always this inner voice that keeps converting and telling me the rate in naira. Conversion is one bad habit and hoping to drop as soon as I can. |

blacnewton: So I have been in the states for 2 months now. My initial school was Upper Iowa University but I transferred to Everett Community College because the fees was crazy and the scholarship I was given at Iowa was not full with some hidden charges. I still get to pay $22k+ (with the scholarship). Here in Everett, it's just $18k for the year and I can pay per quarter which is really nice. Thanks so much for this. This is really what we need here. I hope more people are inspired to share more instead of looking for who to bully. God Bless you |

Wow Too Many bullets flying around here.
Anyway, I have been in the US for a Month Now. Its been an experience. The US is really a Good place to study in. I have never loved education the way i love it now. As in I love going to class. Professors are down to earth and you know they are more than willing to help you. Lecturers in Nigeria place themselves as God over students and most times you are even scared to ask question in class or even go to their office to get clarifications on what you were taught or a section of their handouts you don't understand, more often they don't understand fully what they teach. In the US, Professors have walk in office hours for student so in case you don't understand something clearly they are willing to explain, they even give you their email and phone Number. Classes start exactly when they are supposed to, I have never seen a professor come late to class, you are informed well ahead of time if they wont be coming for a particular class so you can plan your schedule properly.
Most times i just feel bad for Nigeria, there even a whole lot of professors who claim to have studied in the US and still return home and do the direct opposite of what they experienced in the US. I pray things change and when "YOU" studying in the US finally return home and probably get a lecturing job, you practice the same standard of education with which you got while in the states.
God Bless Nigeria |

Ohjaybee: 1st interview slated for August 3rd, 6.30am
The visa officer was a lady.. V.O : good morning Me: good morning ma'am V.O: what are you going to do in the US Me: I'm going to study at Madison college V.O: what will you be studying Me: It's a liberal arts and science program after which I'd major in Psychology V.O: so tell me about the program Me: it's general education is aimed at preparing students for whatever they'd like to major in after transferring credits to get their bachelor's degree in a 4year university. V.O: so what would you do after getting this associate degree Me: I intend on transferring the credits to University of Wisconsin, Madison since it's in affiliation with Madison college. V.O: what subjects are you going to take Me: maths, English, humanities, social and behavioural sciences, natural sciences (then she cut me off) V.O: how many schools did you apply to Me: 3... V.o: name the other 2 Me: central Wyoming college and kutztown university of Pennsylvania V.o: how many admitted you Me: just Madison, I've not gotten any decision from cwc and KU wait listed me(which is the truth, although the next day, I got an email saying I've been admitted to cwc) V.o: why this school Me: it's tuition is very affordable, has a very friendly environment towards student of colour, it's class ratio is small hence creating a student-lecturer relationship V.o: why would you want to spend thousands of dollars schooling in the US amidst the numerous school in Nigeria Me surprised though but had to answer) well, psychology is something I'm very passionate about and I'd want to really study it in depth both theoretically and practically, schools here in Nigeria do not really touch the practical aspect (cuts me short) VO: and what makes you think the schools there do a lot of practical Me: (taken aback but didn't show it) I've been in close contact with my international education program specialist from the school and she let me in on all I need to know VO: who's sponsoring you Me: my uncle Vo: what does he do Me: he's a medical doctor and a business man Vo: (emphasizing) what does he do for a living, I know he's a medical doctor, what does he do for a living Me: (went blank and said) he's into wholesale business of.... (she cut me short and started typing and then handed me the blue paper and said those words nobody would wanna hear I would just drop this here. If you are applying for visa with a Community College i20 you have to be 10x more prepared than others going for Masters and PhD. Its hard to sometimes judge a VO's decision by an interview transcript because other factors come into play such as information filled in your DS160 and what you say during the interview, body language during the interview e.t.c . You should be ready to sell yourself by all means . From your transcript there are some not too good answers V.O: what are you going to do in the US Me: I'm going to study at Madison college I think it would have been better you said I am going to obtain an Associate Degree in Philosophy at Madison college after which i do transfer my units to a 4 year university to obtain a bachelors degree.V.O: so tell me about the program Me: [s]it's general education is aimed at preparing students for whatever they'd like to major in after transferring credits to get their bachelor's degree in a 4year university.[/s] You Should have spoken about Philosophy and not Liberal Arts and Science Since you already said you are majoring in Philosophy. Speak about the courses you would be taking and how you are excited and passionate about choosing philosophy as a Major. You could speak about some popular people you know that studied philosophy and are doing very well Side Note: When i got my i20 at first Liberal Arts and Science was written but i requested for another one stating my Major (Computer Science). I wasnt prepared to defend why Liberal Art is written on my i20 yet i am majoring in computer science V.o: why would you want to spend thousands of dollars schooling in the US amidst the numerous school in Nigeria Me:[s](surprised though but had to answer) well, psychology is something I'm very passionate about and I'd want to really study it in depth both theoretically and practically, schools here in Nigeria do not really touch the practical aspect (cuts me short)[/s] There's actually no Class Practical aspect in Philosophy. You only practice philosophy in your everyday life. You should have spoken about the high standard of education that the US offers in terms of teaching and the quality of teaching staffs and also there would be a great diverse and international environment. There are a lot of international students, so class discussions are very interesting and offer diverse perspectives. VO: and what makes you think the schools there do a lot of practical Me: ([s]taken aback but didn't show it) I've been in close contact with my international education program specialist from the school and she let me in on all I need to know [/s] She's Right no Practical. VO: who's sponsoring you Me: my uncle Red Flag Vo: what does he do Me: [s]he's a medical doctor and a business man [/s] Just say he is a Medical Doctor, dont create question for yourself. I am not an expert but this is to the best of my knowledge. Review this with the Gurus. Better Luck next time |

TWoods: That is a privilege reserved for US citizens, not Nigerians. That "agreement" is funded by taxpayers. You did not contribute to it and should not rely on it. You are required to be able to afford your college costs without needing to work or recourse to government funds. You would not have obtained a visa if you had indicated you were going to study at such a CC. It is therefore dishonest to lie that you're going to a top school and can afford it, only to get into the US and then take the spot of a deserving US citizen in a CC. Probably you didn't understand my previous post. No one is relying on US Government to fund college cost,It is not a "Funded" agreement, it is a privilege given to students who attend California community colleges and display outstanding leadership skills in various areas. Fortunately the Transfer Agreement Plan works for all including International Students. More 97% admitted International students admitted here with me plan to transfer to a 4 year California University. They are from other countries, I am the only Nigerian among them I obtained my Visa with a Community College i20 not a University. I discussed this transfer option with the VO and i was issued a Visa. You could google this, you probably would understand better. |
