 Education › Adamawa Government Begins Free Feeding For Boarding Secondary Schools by Ify05(op): 5:37pm On Jun 24, 2019 |
Adamawa State Government has started a free feeding programme for students of its boarding secondary schools. The state Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, spoke about the programme on Monday in Yola while receiving members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) who were led on a solidarity visit to him by its governorship candidate in the 2019 general election, Sen. Abdul-Azeez Nyako. Fintiri said the feeding of boarding secondary school students has commenced in nine schools and would be extended to cover all the 52 boarding schools in the state in the near future. Governor Fintiri also announced that all forms of school fees will be abolished from September so that parents would no longer be bothered with school fees. Fintiri spoke days after the report of a baseline research into causes of high rate of out-of-school children in the state recommended free education among others, after noting that many students drop out of school at the point of sitting for final examination because of inability to pay the fee for such examination. The governor said the gestures of his government were meant to make quality education conveniently available to all the people of the state, adding that, “Our plan is to make sure that government schools can compete with private schools in quality of education in the state.” Fintiri welcomed the ADC delegation on its solidarity visit and said his administration was available to take advice from all citizens irrespective of the party they are in. Earlier in his speech, the ADC delegation leader, Abdul-Azeez Nyako, said he and his party members paid Governor Fintiri the solidarity visit because Fintiri and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had been carrying the ADC along. “ADC as a party wants to assure you of support; we will not heat up the polity for you,” Abdul-Aziz assured Fintiri. Abdul-Aziz Nyako was the third most popular governorship candidate in the last governorship election after Fintiri who won the election, and then APC’s Mohammed Jibrilla Bindow who trailed Fintiri. Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has said that anyone who fails to work for the actualisation of a Biafran state will not make heaven. He said that those against the creation of the Sovereign State of Biafra are doing so to their own peril. The IPOB leader claimed that the angels in heaven speak Igbo language. Kanu stated this while addressing Biafra supporters in Texas, USA, on Sunday. According to him, “God gave you a gift in America to rescue us if you like you can leave it. “But I can assure you, if you have heard this gospel [Biafra] today, you return to your homes and do nothing, you will never make heaven. “Anybody that hates Biafra can never make heaven. In heaven, the angels speak the Igbo language.” Kanu, who compared Biafra to Israel, pointed out that there were attempts by foreigners to dominate Israel, adding that Israel failed to act because “they thought it was a joke”. “After 2000 years, their land was no longer called Israel, it was called Palestine and they had to fight their ways. But today, Israel does not have full ownership of Jerusalem because of one mistake. “I hope that the value that has driven Biafra civilization for 5000 years will come back to sustain us for another 5000 years. This evening, we have started something that will culminate in the coming of Biafra. “All of you that did those wonderful works in years back, I call upon you now to redouble your efforts and do the same thing you did before but only now slightly differently; where before you have Nigeria, remove it and put Biafra. “All hail Biafra. Anybody from Enugu here? Do you know that your land has been taken over? “And we think it’s a child’s play. Nature abhors a vacuum, not just theories, it happens. Do you see how clean this place is? “If you lock this place and come back here in 20 years, it would decay on its own because you left home, that is why the Fulani have come. “The only people who are against Biafra are either saboteur, their fathers were saboteurs during the wars. Anybody that hates Biafra is not of pure Biafra blood. That is why we are relying and counting on you. “No matter how many Igbo villages you built in Virginia, a place I will personally knock down myself…People built Chinatown to make money if they had built it to make money I can understand. “What you are saying [by building houses in America] is that we no longer exist and that for people to know who we are, they need to go to a museum and be looking through a window to see things. “As long as we stand, our fight is two-fold. Following the plan of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, to establish vigilante group in the Southeast region, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council worldwide on Sunday demanded an immediate sack of Fulani youths serving as gatemen for Igbo in the zone. The apex Igbo socio-cultural group made this known in a statement signed by its President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and made available to Us, in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital. The Nigerian Air Force, Sunday, denied reports circulating on social media, alleging that its operatives dropped weapons for killer Fulani herdsmen in the forest area of Akwuke Community, Enugu South LGA of Enugu State. In a statement by Faith Aigbeoghain, Flight Lieutenant, Acting Command Public Relations and Information Officer, Headquarters Ground Training Command Nigerian Air Force, she described the report as false, “deliberately misleading and obviously concocted by the writer to cause disaffection and incite negative, divisive emotions”. The report, accompanied with a picture, had gone viral, claiming that the Airforce personnel were dropping weapons for the Fulani herdsmen ahead of a planned attack in Enugu State. But the Airforce spokesman has now dismissed it as unfounded. The statement obtained by our correspondent read: “The attention of Headquarters Ground Training Command (HQ GTC) Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Enugu has been drawn to a story being circulated by some mischievous, misguided elements purporting that NAF helicopters were being used to “drop” weapons for Fulani herdsmen in the forest area of Akwuke Community in Enugu South Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State. The report alleged that helicopters had been seen on several occasions flying at low level and landing in the forest area to “discharge their packages”. “HQ GTC wishes to state that the report is deliberately misleading and obviously concocted by the writer to cause disaffection and incite negative, divisive emotions. It must be noted that the NAF has 2 helicopter training institutions under its purview, which have been operating in Enugu for several years. These are the International Helicopter Flying School (IHFS) and 405 Helicopter Combat Training Group (405 HCTG), whose training curricula include low level flying around the forest areas near Akukwe, which is one of their designated training areas. “In particular, the 405 HCTG commenced tactical training on the newly acquired 109 Power helicopters on 24 May 2019, which includes low level flying as well as other maneuvres requiring them to land and take off within the training area. However, at no time was any NAF helicopter used to ‘drop’ any materials, let alone deliver weapons to any individual or group. Members of the public, especially residents of Enugu State, are therefore advised to discountenance the fake report and go about their normal activities without fear. Former Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, has told his successor, Gov. Seyi Makinde, to stop looking at mundane issues. Ajimobi, at a reception organised for him by Ibadan Elders Forum on Saturday, said that the state could not afford to go back in terms of development, NAN reports. “I pray that Makinde succeeds as governor of the state. It is in our interest that he should succeed. “We have raised the bar of governance in this state and can’t afford to see it go down again. “I heard them say that members of our cabinet carted away government cars. We have served and left. He should stop looking at mundane issues,” he said. The former governor said that those he worked with during his time did not profess themselves to be perfect, urging the new governor to build on their success in the interest of the citizenry. Ajimobi said his administration met the state in bricks and left it in marbles, urging Ajimobi to be a progressive governor. “He must build and not demolish. He must correct and not destroy. We must not return to the era of brigandage. “We know the dual carriage roads we built can’t be returned to single lane and the bridges we have constructed cannot be pulled down. We have taken Oyo to greater heights and it must not go down. “Every journey begins with a step and it ends with a step. We did not achieve perfection but achieved successes,” Ajimobi said. The former governor commended the Ibadan Elders’ Forum, saying it was the promoter and sustainer of whatever successes his administration achieved. He apologised to all those he might have offended during his administration. “We can’t do things the same way; otherwise I will not be me. A Bauchi State High Court has restrained the factional Speaker, of the State Assembly, Kawuwa Shehu Damina and his Deputy, Tukur Ibrahim against parading themselves as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively. Delivering judgement, Justice A.M. Karin Madaki on Friday granted an order of interim conjunction following an application filed by Abubakar Suleiman and 12 other lawmakers. The application was filed against Bauchi State House of Assembly, Bauchi State Attorney General, Kawuwa Shehu Damina and 16 others as defendants, on June 21st, 2019. The judge in his ruling said, “Having listened to the learned Counsel to the Plaintiffs/Applicants, Ben Ogbuchi, ESQ, Mukhtar A.Usman ESQ, O.P Egbe-Okpenge, ESQ. move the Court in terms of their motion Ex-parte dated and filed on 21/06/2019. ” I hereby ordered that an order of interim injunction be and is hereby made, restraining the 3rd and 4th Respondents/Defendants from parading themselves out and / or parading themselves, purporting to act in whatever manner as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly respectively pending the determination of the motion on notice” He later adjourned the matter to July, 2nd, 2019 for motion on notice” It had been reported that there had been crisis in the state after Abubakar Suleiman Ningi and Kawuwa Shehu Damina emerged as Speakers of the Bauchi State House of Assembly through parallel elections. The elections were held separately with 11 members loyal to Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, who elected Abubakar Suleiman Ningi as Speaker. 20 members loyal to the former governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar also elected Kawuwa Shehu Damina as Speaker at a separate inauguration. Meanwhile, the National Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has warned Gov. Bala Muhammed of Bauchi State to submit to the rule of law by allowing APC lawmakers who are majority to lead and pilot the affairs of Bauchi State House of Assembly. According to TNT Sports, Fifa are said to be holding hushed discussions on axing Qatar and gifting the tournament to another nation after a series of high-profile controversies.
