Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state has reportedly ordered his security details to shoot anyone who attempts to block his convoy.


Premium Times reports that the governor issued the the order at the weekend while narrating how his convoy was blocked recently by mourners at a wake-keep in the state.

It was learnt that the incident happened along Onicha road in Onicha local government area of the state on his way back to the Abakaliki from his Uburu, Ohaozara hometown Friday night.

The governor claimed that a rifle was lost in the incident.

“Yesterday night, I was coming back by 12 midnight. Of course, I had to stop over at the college to inspect projects, but when we got to Onicha, they blocked the road.

“Even with the litany of army and the police and everything, they did not even want to open the road. Then I said they should arrest all of them, but most of them ran away. I think they even took a gun of an army officer,” he said.

Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s vice president, departed the country for Oslo, Norway on Monday, October 7 to attend the Nordic-Africa Business Summit holding this week, in a bid to mobilise foreign investment.

A statement sent in by the VP’s aide, Laolu Akande, disclosed that Osinbajo would be honouring a personal invitation from Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway, Daily Trust reports.

Gathers that the event is being organized to give particular prominence to trade and investment ties between Africa and the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and will take place from Monday to Wednesday, October 9.

The statement read in part: “In pursuit of the Buhari administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), especially regarding the active mobilization of foreign investment, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, will be honouring a personal invitation of the prime minister of Norway, Erna Solberg, to attend the Nordic-African Business Summit in Oslo this week.

“The invitation is a long-standing one and the event, holding from Monday to Wednesday, is being organized to give particular prominence to trade and investment ties between Africa and the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

“The summit will attract the largest Nordic companies doing business or interested in doing business in Nigeria, with interests in agriculture, light manufacturing, transportation, digital technology and entertainment, oil and gas, and renewable energy.

“Specifically, Prof Osinbajo would, among other critical issues, be speaking on the strides made by the Buhari administration in improving the economy and human capital development.
“The vice president will also headline a specific Nigeria-focused investment roundtable, which is expected to lead to increased trade and investment into Nigeria by building confidence about business prospects in the country and its role as an economic gateway into Africa.”

Osinbajo would also hold a bilateral meeting with PM Solberg during the trip to discuss issues of mutual interest to Nigeria and Norway.

Osinbajo left Abuja, the nation’s capital, after attending the Extraordinary Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa.

He is expected to return to the country on Thursday, October 10.

Inibehe Effiong, one of the lawyers on the legal team representing Omoyele Sowore, has cried out over the bail conditions set for the release of the activist.

Effiong, in an interview with The Cable said the conditions set by the court for Sowore to be released is impossible to fulfil.

Recall that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday, October 4, granted a N100 million bail to Sowore.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, who gave the bail conditions said the publisher would produce two sureties - in like sum - who are owners of landed property within the court's jurisdiction.

Updated: Court grants Sowore N100 million bail Sowore is also expected to deposit his travel passport to the court till the end of his trial and is not allowed to travel out of the Federal Capital Territory throughout his trial period.

Effiong, while reacting to these bail conditions, said nobody is willing to be a surety for that amount.

"That amount of money is not available, it is not realistic under the current economic situation,"

he said. He said the legal team is going back to the trial court next week to seek a variation of the bail conditions.

He said: “We understand bail is at the discretion of the court but the Administration of Criminal Justice Act allows us to apply for a variation where the conditions are such that the defendants cannot meet.”

HNK Rijeka of Croatia goalkeeper David Nwolokor has pleaded with coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr to hand him a chance to push for a spot in his team, reports.

The 23 year old is back at Croatia after a fairly successful time on loan last season to Slovakian side SKF Sered where he made 15 appearances and conceded 20 goals he however had three sheets.

Nwolokor who is yet to play a game for Rijeka this season as he is presently the second choice goalkeeper said he only need an invitation to show the coaches what he can do.

” I think I deserve a call up to push for a spot in the Super Eagles. The games I have played the past thre seasons across the various teams I have played is more than that of any goalkeeper of my age from Nigeria. It’s not like I am asking to be made first choice, I just want a chance”, he says.

Three seasons ago he has a successful loan spell in Bosnia with NK Vitez before ‎impressing in his second loan stint with HNK Sibenik in the second division of Croatia, his performance earned him the move to SKF Sered where he spent last season on loan.

Gen. Jeremiah Useni (rtd), the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in March 2019 governorship election in Plateau state, has rejected the verdict of the state election tribunal.

Recall that the Plateau governorship elections petitions tribunal in Jos threw out Useni's petition and affirmed the election of Governor Simon Lalong on Wednesday, October 2,

The Sun newspaper reports. Useni, in a statement released by his media aide, Hon Yiljap Abraham, said he is heading to the Court of Appeal to renew the case against Lalong.

He claimed that winning against the APC candidate, Lalong, in the appeal court will be possible since most of the tribunal’s findings are in fact in favour of his petition against the governor.


“I am convinced that there are many grounds to appeal the judgement. I have, therefore, instructed the legal team to take all processes with immediate effect and proceed on appeal against the tribunal judgement.

“The bulk of the tribunal’s findings are in fact in favour of my petition, for example, the fact that Governor Simon Bako Lalong did indeed give false information on oath. But surprisingly, the tribunal did not give any consequential order to nullify his election.”

Popular Nigerian pastor, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has narrated the story of how he almost died while fasting. The pastor explained that he fasted for eleven days without water or food and almost died.

The pastor, who is the general overseer of Omega Fire Ministries, narrated the story in a tweet. He stated that he decided to share the story after someone asked him what day of his life would he like to forget.

House of Reps to probe road projects executed in the last 12yrs

The House of Representatives on Thursday resolved to probe all the roads constructed by the Federal Government across the country from 2007 to date.

The House made the resolution after the adoption of a motion moved by Hon Dachung Musa Bagus under matters of urgent Public importance titled “Motion on the Daily death of Nigerians as result of bad roads in Nigeria” at the plenary Consequently, the House mandated the Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA,Chaired by Hon Richard Olufemi Bamisile to investigate all roads constructed by the Federal government from 2007 to date and report by the to House within few weeks for further legislative action.

The House equally urged the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Works and FERMA to include the construction and rehabilitation of the bad roads in the country in the priority list for the 2020 budget

According to Hon Bagus, “the challenges caused by poor nature of our roads in the country which are in a deplorable condition which make it difficult for road users and commuters to without recording avoidable loss of life and enormous damage to vehicles”

He noted that , most Federal Highways were constructed in the 1970’s and since then no major quality construction or rehabilitation has been carried out on these important links.

He further noted that these Federal Highways have been death traps, most of the routes that link further states to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, are at the verge of being cut off from being part of the federating units of Nigeria.

He said he was “Concerned that if urgent measures are not taken to rehabilitate roads in order to improve the economic and commercial activities of the people in terms of infrastructural development, they will continue to wallop in abject poverty which can lead to the total collapse of the social infrastructure.

‘This can threaten the existence of some States as federating units of the federal Republic of Nigeria if severed from the road network to the Federal Capital Territory’.. While moving the motion, Hon Bagus raised the alarm that more Nigerians have been killed on the nation’s highways due to the deplorable conditions of the roads than the dreaded Book haram insurgency despite several billions of Naira spent on the roads over the years.

According to him,” only yesterday a bridge collapsed in Ekiti State and people died in the process, people die on the roads on a daily basis, all the roads are in a sorry state. “We as lawmakers, we must urgently address the issue because if we don’t do something now, we will not be able to the next level of greatness of our dream”

The motion was unanimously adopted when it was put to vote by Speaker, Hon Feni Gbajabiamila.

House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has told his colleagues that days when members sign attendance in the Chamber and walk away is gone.

Gbajabiamila spoke on Thursday while ruling on a Point of Order by a member, Haruna Dederi, who observed that the quorum was not formed on the floor as members debated a motion on drug abuse.
Dederi, while speaking on the Point of Order, noted that members were very few in the Chamber and a quorum of 120 members was not formed.

But, Minority Leader Ndudi Elumelu said a quorum cannot be determined by the number of members in the Chamber.

According to him, “some members have come, signed in the chamber and left for committee assignments and oversight.”

House Leader Ado Doguwa said it is an established tradition, admitting that the number of members in the Chamber did not reflect quorum.

However, Gbajabiamila, who said the House would have to suspend its rules, if the debate would continue, noted that the usual excuse to continue plenary when the quorum is not formed is wrong.

He referred members to Order 4 Rule 2, saying the House should keep to the spirit of the rule.

According to Gbajabiamila, the order says:

“The quorum of the House shalt be: one-third of all the members of the House.

“If any member draws the attention of the Speaker to the fact that a quorum of the House is not present, or if, from the number of members taking part in a decision, including those members who declined to vote, it appears that a quorum is not constituted, the Speaker shall cause members to be summoned as if for a decision.
“At the expiration of 15 minutes from such order, the Speaker shalt count the House and, if a quorum is not then constituted, shall adjourn the House forthwith.”

Gbajabiamila said that things should be done in conformity with the rules of the House.

“If the intention was that people should come at 10am, sign and go, then, we’re kidding ourselves. We cannot be conducting sitting with 10 members. Hon. Elumelu, I hereby rule you out of order.
“On the issue of committee work, I’m inclined to agree with that. That’s important and part of sitting of the House. But just to play safe and for future, move for suspension of the rule so we can continue,” he said

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), on Thursday said 90 per cent of cars in the country were smuggled into the country by unscrupulous elements.

Ali, who said this while addressing newsmen in Abuja, alleged that many vehicles on display for sale in auto shops across the country were also smuggled.

He explained that the recent raids of the various car dealers’ spots in some parts of the country were to ascertain whether the vehicles were brought in genuinely or not.

According to him, the country needs revenue for development, hence, it became necessary to collect duties on those smuggled vehicles.

“We want to use this opportunity to ensure that cars within our borders are fully customised, which means duties are paid on them”, NAN quoted him as saying.

”We are looking for revenue from everywhere and we have these people who brought in vehicles and failed to pay duties.

“What we are doing now, we are just enforcing the law, which allows us to collect revenue on behalf of Nigeria and also ensure those vehicles you and I will go and buy have genuine papers that are roadworthy.

“If you meet our officers on the road and they ask for the papers, if they discover you have not paid your duties, they will seize the vehicles.

“We are doing all these to save car buyers from running into trouble,” he explained.

The customs boss said the organisation would continue to mount road block from time to time to stop vehicles to ensure duties were paid on cars.

“The law allows us to stop you and ask for the car papers, if your papers are intact, we thank you and bless you, if it is otherwise, we will ask you to pay the duties

“If we find out you are not a smuggler, you are just an innocent buyer, we will value the car and ask you to pay the required duties on the car and you will be freed,” he said.
