The television series adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s acclaimed novel ‘Americanah’ has been green-lit by HBO Max. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Lupita Nyong’o will star as the lead character, Ifemelu while ‘The Walking Dead’ star, Danai Gurira is the showrunner. HBO Max has given the limited series a 10-episode order with Gurira also writing the pilot for the award-winning novel. ‘Americanah’ tells the story of Ifemelu (Nyong’o), a young, beautiful, self-assured woman raised in Nigeria, who as a teenager falls in love with her classmate Obinze. Living in a military-ruled country, they each depart for the west, with Ifemelu heading for America. There, she learned that despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple for the first time with what it means to be black. On the other hand, quiet and thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous undocumented life in London. Confirming the news on her social media handles @lupitanyongo, the ‘Us’ actress also said,“‘Americanah’ has been a passion project for me since I read Chimamanda’s beautiful novel in 2013. “It’s a tale that is simultaneously timely and timeless. HBO Max is the perfect partner to bring this profound and celebrated story to life. “I’m thrilled that Danai will bring to the project her intelligence, wit, and understanding of the stories and the worlds of ‘Americanah.’” NAN reports that Nyong’o purchased the film rights to ‘Americanah’ in 2014 and immediately collaborated with fellow Black Panther’s castmate, Gurira to write the screenplay. However, in 2018, the duo stated that the novel was being turned into a mini-series and not a feature film. They visited Nigeria to do research for the screen project. This will mark the third time Nyong’o and Gurira work together. Prior to playing Nakia and Okoye in Marvel’s Black Panther, Gurira wrote Eclipsed — the play that landed Nyong’o her first Tony nomination. https://thickmatch.com/chimamanda-adichies-book-americanah-picked-tv-series/

The National and State House of Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia has affirmed the election of Sen. Theodore Orji, representing Abia Central Senatorial District. Delivering a unanimous judgment on Tuesday, the Chairman of the three-member panel, Justice Adeyinka Adebirigbe, dismissed the petition on the ground that the petitioner failed to prove her allegations of electoral irregularities. Sen. Nkechi Nwaogu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had approached the tribunal to challenge the election of Orji of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for failure to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act. Nwogu specifically alleged irregularities in 215 polling units in the area during the Feb. 23 poll and urged the tribunal to order a rerun. However, the tribunal in its judgment held that the petitioner failed to adduce substantial evidence to prove her allegations. It held that the petitioner only called one polling unit agent as witness out of the 215 polling units which, it said, was not enough to prove her case. The tribunal in dismissing the case awarded N500, 000 cost each in favour of Orji, PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a reaction, the counsel for PDP, Mr Obinna Nkume, hailed the judgment, saying that it would stand the test of time. “Even if they decide to appeal, there is no way out because it is a pronouncement based on decided cases,” he said. Also, the Counsel for INEC, Mr Obinna Azode, said the petitioner “was supposed to call credible witnesses, who would give evidence in support of her claims.” See more here https://thickmatch.com/tribunal-upholds-senator-orjis-election-abia-central/

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to create a unit that would help to positively redirect the wrong orientations of youth caught committing financial crimes. He said the unit should also seek to explore the wisdom, ingenuity and brilliance of such youths positively to fight financial and economic crimes in the country. The First Class monarch gave the advice while playing host to the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu who paid him a courtesy call in his Ile Odua, Ife, palace. Magu was represented by the Ibadan Zonal Head of the anti-graft agency, Mr Friday Ebelo who was accompanied by top officials of the commission. Urging the team of visitors to be politically neutral in the discharge of their duties, Oba Ogunwusi reiterated that the goodwill and integrity enjoyed by the commission, as the hope for the oppressed and downtrodden in both the public and private must not be taken for granted. He said “It is unlike the EFCC to pay a courtesy visit. This is a wonderful development to form a sane society for the generation yet unborn and that something good can come from our country. The EFCC is the only hope for the downtrodden and oppressed both on the public and private sector and we will continue to pray for you as a Co-Chairman of the traditional rulers’ council of Nigeria alongside the Sultan of Sokoto. “We are doing our very best to have a crime-free society. I can assure you that we will continue to work together for Nigeria to be a better country. Today, you have honoured me with your visit to my palace, and I will assure you that we will work together to ensure that our country is a better place even for the generation unborn. “We have had many presidents and many chairmen of EFCC that have gone, but we will always have one country, and that is the Nigeria that we still have. Your approach is good and you have developed goodwill to do well. You have sanitised and cleaned the private and public sector. But my advice is that, don’t be one-sided. You should be known as a neutral body. Don’t let any politician push you. Do what is right because politicians will come and go but EFCC will still be there. “I will also advise the EFCC to always look at things in a pragmatic manner. Once the youths are arrested, there are positive ways their thoughts can be redirected. There are many ways you can redirect the bad things on the mind and bring out the good ones because many of them are even ignorant of what they are doing. “You should have a unit to see how to develop the brains of those engaging in financial crimes and redirect it and use the same to block others from committing the same crime. Use them as anti-venom anytime they are apprehended, especially as to how they were able to carry out successful operations. “Each and every staff of the EFCC should know that it is very important to lead by examples. Let us encourage our youths with such advocacy that you are doing now for them to put behind them the bad intentions that they may have.” Assuring the monarch of the visit of his boss later, the EFCC Ibadan Zonal Head said the commission is aware of the significant roles the traditional institutions among others have to play to ensure victory in the anti-graft war. The rising spate of xenophobic attacks in South Africa has triggered a myriad of angry reactions and emotions from netizens world over. Nigeria, her citizens allegedly being the most affected or targeted, has since also reportedly begun retaliating with equal measure of brutality and violence in solidarity with her citizens in South Africa. As the drums of vengeance keep beating vigorously in Nigeria, much introspection is needed to African citizens and their respective governments. This matter, if left unchecked or unbridled, may propagate Africa to a state of animosity never before witnessed and thrust sub-Sahara into a gulag. Hate should never take the place of love, for there is no proper end game except death that is anticipated when blows are constantly countered by blows; deaths of individuals, States, dreams, values and of humanity. Major world problems today – including hunger – stem from the adverse or extreme levels of wanton corruption, perjury, mass murders, religious intolerance, ignorance, disease, poverty and plunder. South African citizens participating in these brutal acts of humanity need to quickly realize that they are not just killing ‘foreigners’ but their own Bantu brothers and sisters who are evenly spread across all parts of the continent. They are killing mothers and fathers of innocent children whose only mistake was look for greener pastures away from their homes and settle down south in order to be able to fend for themselves and their families. The mistake of perceiving, perhaps like most of us, that South Africa being the land of some of the continent’s greatest freedom fighters like Nelson ‘Madiba’ Mandela would be welcoming enough and understanding of their struggles. Mandela, who was commonly also known as Tata, spent twenty seven years incarcerated for reasons humane and just. His fight, as with those of many other freedom fighters like him, was for the betterment and equality of humanity, especially the recognition of men and women of colour; what is happening in the country he left behind right now would make him cringe. Some of the recent crop of emerging leaders from South Africa, like Julius Malema, are on record advocating for a united African front. One is however left only pondering at the possibility of this vision coming to fruition going by the current state of affairs. For how is a united African front possible when the few Africans down south are being hacked to death and others set ablaze by people of their own kind? South Africans have gone against the natural laws of growth and expansion. Consequently, the eruption of the barbaric opprobrium from the south should only lead us to thoroughly reflect as Kenyans. To reflect upon the lives we impact and upon the natures of leaders we elect based more on what they do and not merely say. Nobody, ladies and gentlemen, should ever purport to want the best for yourself than you would want it your own self. Nigerian Actor cum politician, Yul Edochie has revealed his sentiments towards Nigerian Leaders was different until he joined politics. According to Yul, ‘I always thought our problem was our leaders till I joined politics and realized the people are also a big part of the problem. If you run for office and you don’t have money to share, even your village people will leave you and support a well known kidnapper who is sharing money’. He also said, ‘yes our leaders have failed us for so long but running out of the country is not the best option. Who go fix am? Then we are treated as 3rd class citizens abroad. We need all hands on deck, all voices. The fewer the opposition, the easier it is for the oppressor to carry on’. The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), has opposed the proposed cultural exchange programme between Nigerian and South African youths to address xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and promote unity between the two countries. The President of NANS, Danielson Akpan, said this shortly after a closed door meeting and a news briefing by Mr Bobby Moroe, Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Nigeria, on Wednesday in Abuja. The briefing was on cultural exchange programme between Nigeria and South Africa to foster unity between the two countries. Akpan said that the proposed exchange programme by the South African High Commission and the Federal Government for youths and students’ body would not work in view of the prevailing situation in South Africa. ”We do not need the proposed exchange programme; how do you carry out exchange programme in a place where you are not safe? “Our members, who are schooling in South Africa, have been calling us that they want to come back home. He said attacks by South Africans on Nigerians and other nationals were unjustifiable and condemnable. He called for concerted efforts by both governments to tackle the situation. According to him, molestation of Nigerians by South Africans is not justifiable, if they can burn Nigerians’ owned shops and businesses, while South African businesses thrive in Nigeria. “We have Multichoice, MTN, Shoprite and other South African companies numbering over 180 of them and we have not attacked any. “Nigerians are also angry and we are humans, we cannot continue to keep quiet and watch our people being killed, why are they not allowing Nigerians to take laws into their hands? “This has to stop; the proposed exchange programme by the South African High Commission and the Federal Government of Nigeria for youths and students body has failed,” he said. The meeting was organised by the high commission in collaboration with the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Global Peace Initiative (GPI) and Committee of Youth on Mobilisation and Sensitisation (CYMS) and National Association of Nigeria Students. https://punchng.com/xenophobia-nans-opposes-cultural-exchange-programme-with-south-africa/amp/

BREAKING: #Xenophobia: South Africa High Commission shuts down offices |
Former Chelsea midfielder, Cesc Fabregas claimed that Lionel Messi has been the best player in the world for the past 15 years and he also believes it’s impossible that another player like the Argentine will emerge in the future. The two former Barcelona teammates spent three seasons together at Camp Nou with Messi winning two Ballon d’Ors during that time. Having had the privilege of playing alongside the Argentine, Fabregas declared Messi is truly one of a kind when asked if there ever could be another like him. “I think that’s probably impossible. We’ve seen the likes of Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, amazing players, but Messi has been the best for 15 years. He’s in his 17th season and he’s been the best since he was 18 years old,” Fabregas told AS. “I’ve seen things you wouldn’t believe. Every three days he scores goals, he heads off to play for Argentina, he comes back jet-lagged and scores a hat-trick… that’s not normal, believe me. I would have liked to enjoy playing more with Leo. I had a bit of bad luck in that respect. The first season we had together we had a great understanding. “But the two following seasons was when I had my worst time with injuries. I wasn’t at my best at key moments and that affected everyone, including Leo.” The World Cup winner currently plays for French side AS Monaco with the club second last in Ligue 1 with just two points from their first four games. After just avoiding relegation last season, Fabregas is hoping they can bounce back this campaign. “The objective last year was clear: stay up by whatever means possible. This season we’ll try to compete to qualify for the Champions League. Let’s see if the new signings all fit in well,” he said. Monaco had a busy transfer window with the likes of Wissam Ben Yedder and Tiemoue Bakayoko joining the club as they look to rebound from a down year. The French giants has not finished outside the top three in the French top flight since the 2012-13 campaign before falling down the pecking order last campaign. The club will return to Ligue 1 action on September 15 with a tough clash against Marseille as they look to get their first victory of the new season.
