South Africa surprise the world by beating host nation Egypt in the second round as they set up a quarter final clash against Nigeria. Second half strike from Thembinkosi Lorch takes the Bafana Bafana past the Pharaohs. Mohamed Salah got the first chance as early as the four minutes of play but the Liverpool forward smashes the loose ball just wide on the half volley but there was some venom in the shot. South Africa got the first shot on goal in the first 15 minutes after a thunderous shot from their dangerous man Percy Tau. A poor touch by Furman allows Salah to break upfield with great intent. But Salah’s pass is poor, behind his team-mate, and South Africa are allowed to go up the other end themselves, Tau cutting in from the right again and looking for the top right from 25 yards. He stings El Shenawy’s hands, a fine effort. South Africa were given a dangerous area in the 22nd minute. Tau whips a glorious effort over the wall and towards the top left. El Shenawy, who has been in decent form in this tournament, tips over the bar. In the 29 minutes, Thembinkosi Lorch spins on the edge of the Egyptian box before shooting just wide which was South Africa’s fifth shot on in the match. Baxter’s boys were the better side in the first 45 minutes creating numerous chance but unlucky not to register a goal. The Pharaohs have not been bad also as they also took the game to the Bafana Bafana but lacks final touch. South Africa started the second half just like they ended the first 45 minutes as they continue to mount pressure on the Pharaohs. South Africa kept coming at Egypt and it finally paid off five minutes to go in the normal time. Two passes out from the back, and Mothiba raced down the right in acres, with Lorch free in the middle, no idea where Egypt’s defence has gone. But they’re not there. Lorch opens his body and rams a shot past El Shenawy and into the bottom right. The stadium falls silent in the style of the Maracana 1950. A Twitter user with the handle @uber_that took to the platform to share a photo showing how his girlfriend burnt two eggs in his kitchen. He went on to say that the girl who has been mounting pressure on him to take him to her parents for introduction, is definitely not the type for him. He wrote; “She almost burnt my house down. And she has been putting pressure on me to meet her parents. But how can I marry a lady that can successfully burn boiled eggs. Most of the girls out there are not worthy of a man like me. One of Big Brother Naija 2019 housemates, Thelma, has come under attack over her accent in the reality show. Thelma, among other housemates, brought into the house a different ‘American accent’. However, Thelma’s case seems to be the worst as hers seems not to be genuine, which has generated reactions from Nigerians online. Recall that some Nigerians described choice of housemates in the ongoing fourth season of the Big Brother Naija reality show as “more foreign than Nigerian.” Respondents said that it was puzzling how Manchester-based Mike, London police officer, Khafi and Ike, who said this was his first one in Lagos, made the cut, while thousands of Nigerians flooded audition centres in February. Viewers felt it was unfair to have people risk their lives to the audition and then pick Nigerians in the diaspora. Here are comments of Nigerians gathered by Thickmatch.com from Twitter: @DonJazzy “Thelma has a different haqccent for each question.” @Dfitnessbeaut1 “Thelma’s fake accent just Dropped to igbocent. Governors in the Niger Delta region have come under fire over the decay of infrastructure and underdevelopment in their States. Chairman of Nigerian Young Professionals Forum, NYP, Moses Siloko Siasia blamed the Governors for not fully tapping into what he called the economic potentials of the region. He noted that the Governors were creating an army of youths who may soon rise up against the zone. Speaking with newsmen on the sidelines of the just concluded Niger Delta CEO’s Conference in Port Harcourt, Siasia stressed that the Niger Delta was economically viable, calling on leaders in the region to harness the energy and ideas of young people. He enumerated some of the key areas of economic viability in the region to include human resource, agriculture, oil and gas, blue sea economy, and ecotourism among others. His words: “There is no society globally that has advanced without its human beings. The greatest resource or asset of every society is in its people. “I have met a lot of experts and professionals from the Niger Delta region who are doing extremely well in different fields of endeavour. “We must ensure that we identify and engage them. Countries that have advanced such as China, Singapore, Malaysia and others, looked at their bests brains and how they can actually make them contribute their expertise to engineer economic growth “As key stakeholders, we must urgently harness the mass energy and idealism of our young people into productive ventures. “Agriculture also has great potentials in the Niger Delta region. We have great soil for cassava cultivation, and rice production. We can have three seasons of rice production in a year without any form of irrigation. “But in the Northern Nigeria today that have taken the glory for rice production, it is difficult to do three seasons of farming without irrigation. So we must tap into this. “On plantain which is one of our crops, we must ensure we do a lot of plantain plantation and also encourage local governments to go into the production of plantain. We also have ogbono, pepper, vegetables and many others. These are crops that can grow in our region and we can use them for the collective good of our people.” Siasia expressed regret that the region has not done well in the area of oil and gas exploration and production, saying the failure of the Niger Deltans to build the capacity of their people has made other geopolitical zones to take over service and ownership of oil assets. He disclosed that only Bayelsa State houses 75 percent of gas deposit in the entire country but expressed dissatisfaction that it has not translated into economic benefit to the people of the State. “Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran and many other big countries do not have the level of gas reserve Bayelsa has today. So we must be able to tap into the oil and gas industry and create jobs for our people who have been impoverished. “There are a lot of our people who have been trained either as welders, civil engineers, underwater divers but have not been engaged. We must prepare our people to take over the oil and gas sector,” Siasia added. While expressing dissatisfaction that doing business in the Niger Delta was quite challenging, Siasia called on governors in the region to support young business owners. He further appealed to state governors in the region to provide incentives for young business owners, suchs tax holidays, creating an enabling environment and grants. Niger State government has said the Northern states have the potentials to accommodate the federal government’s Ruga settlement plan. Ruga settlements are conceived by the federal government to address the incessant clashes between farmers and herders in the country. In an interactive session with newsmen on Monday in Minna, the Secretary to the Niger State Government (SSG), Ahmed Matane, said: “the North had the largest land mass in the country with greater portion largely untapped.” He added that Northern state governors, in collaboration with the federal government, should put the land into judicious use through the Ruga settlement initiative. He said the initiative could look at the possibility of reactivating the structures already put in place by the defunct Northern Region government through the many grazing reserves that abound in the North. According to him, most of the reserves had been gazetted with already developed structures but abandoned. Matane added that they should be rehabilitated and upgraded for use, pointing out that the ongoing discontents over the proposed settlement were needless. He said, “Bringing the nomads together would end the conflict thrown up by the struggle for space. The Ruga initiative would lead to development and enhancement of livestock value chain.” “Livestock development is a big business. The value chain is enormous and will attract huge foreign exchange for the country. Leather alone is a multimillion naira business and in the ongoing diversification drive of the federal government from oil to agriculture; livestock subsector could be the key flagship,” he explained. The SSG said Niger State had already taken the lead through the rehabilitation of the 45, 000 hectares Bobi Grazing Reserve in Mariga local government area. According to him, the present administration, under the leadership of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, would expedite action towards promoting pasture development for Pastoralists at the Grazing Reserve. He explained that the settlement of Pastoralists at the Grazing Reserve would turn nomadic Pastoralists into mixed Farmers who will take up crop farming to supplement livestock farming. The PDP, in a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Akeem Olatunji, accused the leadership of the APC of sticking out their necks to defend mindless looting of the common patrimony of the people of Oyo State. It said rather than claim that Governor Seyi Makinde is still in election campaign mood, it is the APC that has remained bewildered that the Governor had outmanouvered all booby traps set to derail his government. “We are highly embarrassed that any leader of the APC, a party that has perpetually claimed its live for anti- corruption at the national level could launch out and defend unconscienced mismanagement and outright looting in the Pacesetter State. We are appalled that the said APC leaders saw nothing wrong in the illegal payment of N2billion to a firm for the Moniya- Iseyin Road and the disappearance of the company that received that sum. “We are also appalled by the justification being offered for the illegal local government structure hurriedly put in place by the government of Senator Ajimobi, especially the forum shopping for “anticipated judgement” on the eve of the departure of his government. “Let us say clearly that the PDP- led government ably presided over by Engineer Seyi Makinde will not be distracted by those who are not ashamed to defend mindless looters and corrupt tendencies. “The people of Oyo state are not in any doubt as to the capacity and preparedness of Engineer Makinde and that is why he was massively voted into office. “Let us say also that as true Omoluabi, our party the PDP will not be party to any attempt to colour corrupt tendencies in anyway. “The APC must prevail on its members to return the patrimony of our people mindlessly looted in the last eight years. “Let no one be left in doubt that the long arms of the law will grab the guilty, in a shirt while, regardless of party affiliations,” he said. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reiterated its position to clamp down on motorcycles and tricycles operating without number plates and their drivers operating without the class “A” drivers license with effect from 1st August 2019. In a statement on Wednesday, Bisi Kazeem, Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC, revealed that the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has ordered the operation, saying that the action is in tandem with the provisions of Section 10 Sub Section 4(h) and (i)of the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007. He said that in order to ensure an easy process of acquisition of the number plates and the Class “A” Drivers license, the Corps Marshal has notified Motor Licensing Authorities (MLAs) across the country to make the processes less cumbersome for applicants so that motorcycle and tricycle operators can have a smooth and hitch-free process of acquisition of the Uniform Licensing Scheme Products. Speaking further, Kazeem also quoted the Corps Marshal as saying, that applicants who desire to acquire fresh class “A” License must first present themselves for driving test at the Vehicle Inspection Office before advancing to the capturing unit for continuation of the process. The Corps Public Education Officer asserted that the Corps is not ready to take excuses any more as far as Class ‘A’ License and number plate registration are concerned. It said, “All tricycle and motorcycle operators must be licensed before they could be allowed to operate so as to enhance established processes for fishing out untrained and unqualified drivers on the roads. “In addition, he stated that the growing reports of crimes associated with motorcycles and tricycles has made the clampdown imperative so that the successes already recorded by the Corps through the proactive deployment of the National Vehicle Identification Scheme, especially in the area of national security Intelligence would not be undermined.” https://dailypost.ng/2019/06/26/frsc-sets-deadline-number-plates-violation-drivers-license/amp/

Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has explained that constitution amendments carried out by the Eighth National Assembly had substantially addressed the problem of proliferation of political parties in Nigeria. Ekweremadu expressed surprise over a recent statement credited to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Commissioner in charge of Nasarawa, Kogi, and Kwara States, Muhammed Haruna, that the electoral body lacked the powers to de-register political parties without further constitution amendments. The lawmaker stated that all INEC needed to do was to look at the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fourth Alteration, No. 9) Act published in Official Gazette No. 77 Vol. 105 to be well guided. Writing on his Facebook handle, he said: “INEC has a germane point because the size of our political parties constitute logistical challenge to the election management body. More electorate now find it difficult to identify the logos of their preferred political parties. The ballots and result sheets are getting too long and unwieldy. It also has cost and time implications on elections. “However, I believe INEC’s concern has already been substantially addressed by the 1999 Constitution as amended by the Eighth National Assembly and assented by President Muhammadu Buhari. “We inserted a new Section 225A, which provides that the INEC shall have power to de-register political parties for breach of any of the requirements for registration and failure to win at least 25 percent of votes cast in one state of the federation in a presidential election or 25 per cent of votes cast in at least one local government in a governorship election. “It further empowers INEC to de-register any party that fails to win at least one ward in the Chairmanship election or one seat in the National Assembly or State House of Assembly election or one seat in the Councillorship election. “What it means is that a political party may continue to exist. But once it appears on the ballot, it becomes compulsory for it to meet certain benchmarks to continue to exist. “So, it is incumbent on INEC to filter out and de-register those political parties that appeared on the presidential election ballot but did not garner at least 25 per cent of votes in at least one state of the federation. It should also look at parties that contested election in the states and de-register those political parties that did not poll up to 25 per cent of votes in at least one local government area in those states they contested election.
