HealthLagos Government Confiscates “Ebola Ponmo” by Ify05(op): 10:26am On Jul 09, 2019
The Lagos State Government has confiscated a truckload of cowhide described as “Ebola Ponmo” at Ijegun, on the outskirts of Lagos.

In a statement on Monday, Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Dr Olayiwole Onasanya said the cowhide, was imported into the country by some unscrupulous individuals.

The police, Onasanya said arrested the vehicle at Ikotun before informing officials of the government.

The cowhide, he said, was preserved with chemicals to be used as leather material but they are being sold for human consumption by some criminals.

The “Ebola Ponmo”, Onasanya said, had since been transported to the ministry’s outstation at Johnson Agiri Office Complex, Agege for disposal at the medical waste dumpsite in Ewu Elepe, Ikorodu.
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and Environmental Health Officers have been informed of the discovery and the disposal, he added.

He urged the public to report any suspected activities and sales of unwholesome foods to the nearest local government or the ministry.

PoliticsSelf-promoted Customs Officer Undergoing Medical Examination by Ify05(op): 5:12am On Jul 09, 2019
AN Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC) who appeared at Customs headquarters in Abuja yesterday in the uniform of a Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) is undergoing medical examination, it has been learnt.

The officer’s name tag reads: Nura Dalhatu

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) spokesman Joseph Attah confirmed this to our reporter.

He described the officer as “one not in a right frame of mind”.

The ASC was said to have appeared at the Customs headquarters, demanding to take over the office of Controller General.

“For those who have seen or may soon see a picture that is being variously misinterpreted, what happened was that an Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC) came to the office today wearing the rank of a Deputy Comptroller General.”

“From questions and answers that followed, it was obvious that he was not in the right frame of mind. So, a doctor was immediately invited.

“He is currently undergoing medical examination at the medical unit of the service,” Attah said in a post on a social media platform.

There are eight ranks between the ASC and DCG, which is a top management rank next to the Comptroller General of Customs.

EducationBuhari’s Education Policy Anti-masses, Says ASUU by Ify05(op): 5:01am On Jul 08, 2019
The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Sunday described the President Muhammadu Buhari’s policy on education as anti-masses.

It accused the All Progressives Congress government of a deliberate plan to starve public education with funds in order to deny Nigerian youths the right to know and challenge misrule.

In a release in Ibadan on Sunday and signed by the Chairman, University of Ibadan Chapter of the union, Prof. Deji Omole, ASUU lamented that the sacrifices of understaffed and underpaid Nigerian academia would be futile if President Buhari did not increase funding for education.

Omole cited the University of Ibadan as an example of an institution presently groaning due to paucity of funds, insufficient staff, decayed infrastructure and bad laboratories.

According to the ASUU chief, education was not the priority of the Buhari government.

Omole claimed that due to paucity of funds, over 500,000 Nigerian children who desire public university education were rejected annually due to decayed infrastructure and reduced manpower.

Omole said unless urgent steps were taken to cater to the needs of children of the Nigerian masses, many of them would fight back with crime.

“The APC government’s failure to fund education is a design to kill public universities. University of Ibadan is groaning terribly due to paucity of funds.

“Retired academics cannot be replaced because government deliberately refused to make budgetary provision for growth and development.

“This crisis has led to the staff on ground being overworked leading to early deaths of many of our colleagues.

“Education is not the priority of this government. Due to paucity of funds, many universities including University of Ibadan, the nation’s premier university, cannot admit many qualified candidates into the universities.

“This is dangerous to the society as the rejected qualified and brilliant candidates may eventually take to crimes because the country has rejected them. The policy is not only wicked but criminal,” ASUU lamented.

First half goal from Youcef Belaïli and second half strikes from Riyad Mahrez and Adam Ounas gave the Foxes a deserved win over the West African side.Algeria started on a great note as they took the game to the West African side. EducationCall UI School Principal, Phebean Olowe To Order – Muslim Parents Raise Alarm by Ify05(op): 7:29am On Jul 07, 2019
Parents of Muslim students at the International School, University of Ibadan, under the umbrella of International School Ibadan (ISI) Muslim Parents Forum have called on well-meaning Nigerians to call Principal of the school, Mrs. Phebean Olowe, to order in order to avert crisis in the school.

The Muslim parents noted that the need to call Olowe to order was necessary so as to avoid further harassment, molestation and inhuman treatments of female Muslim students over the use of Hijab outside the school.

Our correspondent recalls that the use of Hijab by female Muslim students in the school has since November 2018 been generating a lot of controversies which made parents of some Muslim students to jointly sue the school, its principal, University of Ibadan and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the school who also doubled as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the university.

However, an Oyo State High Court under the leadership of Justice Ladiran Akintola, on 26th June 2019 struck out the suit filed by the parents on the basis that the petitioners are not supposed to file the case jointly.

On Thursday, a parent, Dr. Idris Olabode Badiru raised an alarm over what he termed as molestation and inhuman treatment of his daughter, Ikhlas Badiru, by the Principal, Mrs. Phebean Olowe, the School Accountant identified as Mr. Odewale and other staff of the school.

Balogun said, “Following our tactical withdrawal from the ISI Hijab matter from the State High Court in Ibadan on June 25, 2019, the Principal through her agents had embarked on harassment intimidation and molestation of some of the Muslim girls who took the school to court to enforce their fundamental human rights to wear hijab in the school premises.

“The Principal reportedly told the girls at the school assembly on Monday that no one should adorn Hijab on school uniform within and outside the school premises. We found the directive of the Principal awkward and absurd especially as it relates to wearing hijab outside the school premises on the school uniform.

“The Principal, however, carried out her threat when on Wednesday, July 3 and Thursday July 4, some Muslim girls who normally, remove their Hijab at the entrance of the school gate, were barred from coming to the school some 100 metres from the main gate of the school.

“A parent, Dr Idris Badaru, narrated his experience. This was corroborated by two other parents who said that the Security personnel of UI under the leadership of the Chief Security officer, carried out the directives of the Principal and were physically assaulting any Muslim girls adorning Hijab outside the gate of the school.

“As if that was not enough, we were reliably informed that the Principal, Mrs. Olowe went to the affected girl’s class to embarrass and scolded her in the presence of her colleagues. We also learnt that the School had hurriedly put up a Student Disciplinary Panel to try all the girls with the hope of suspending them and later expel them from the school.

“All efforts by the Muslim Parents Forum representatives to see the Principal or the Vice Principal proved abortive as the gun-wielding security operatives at the entrance said they were under instruction from above not to allow any parents in.

“We are therefore putting the Principal on notice that should anything untoward happen to any of our girls due to the psychological and emotional harassment, intimidation or any act of terror on them for wearing Hijab outside the school, we shall use all available legal and legitimate means to protect our children.

However, all efforts made by Us to get reactions of the school principal to speak on the matter proved abortive. Several other calls put through to her telephone line were not answered and an SMS sent to the principal asking her to state her position has not been replied as at the time of filing this report.

PoliticsEl-rufai Claims Northern Nigeria Is Backward, Poor While South Is Developing by Ify05(op): 7:23am On Jul 07, 2019
Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that Nigeria is made up of a developing South and a backward, less educated and unhealthy North, with the highest number of poor people in the world.

El-Rufai stated this in Kaduna on Saturday.

Speaking at a summit, the governor noted that the problems of the region must be addressed collectively as a group of 19 northern states governors, not as individual states.

El-Rufai said the summit ” was very timely, adding that “when we talk about awakening the spirit, it means the spirit is either sleeping or dead. Therefore, this summit is very important, just like our keynote address speaker has said.

“But, looking at the statistics, Nigeria appears to be a middle-income country. But, if we segregate those statistics across states and zones, you will see that in terms of human development indicators, Nigeria consists of two countries; there is a backward, less educated and unhealthy northern Nigeria and a developing, largely educated and healthy southern Nigeria.

“We have to speak the truth to ourselves and ask why is it that northern Nigeria has development indicators similar to Afganistan, a country still at war?

“We have the largest number of poor people in the world, most of them in northern Nigeria. Nigeria also has the largest number of out-of-school children, virtually all of them in Northern Nigeria.

“Northern Nigeria has become the centre of drug abuse, gender violence, banditry, kidnapping and terrorism. We have also been associated with high divorce rate and breakdown of families. These are the challenges that confront us. This is the naked truth that we have to tell ourselves.

“We must, therefore, as leaders at all levels have a conversation about the way forward for our part of the country. Because increasingly, as many of you must have seen on social media, we are being considered as the parasite of the federal economy, even though, that is not entirely true. Because northern Nigeria still feeds the nation. The richest businessman in Nigeria is still Aliko Dangote, not someone from southern Nigeria, thank God for that.

“So, we still have a lot to be proud of. We should be proud of our culture and tradition, as well as unity. You hardly can find someone from northern Nigeria convicted of 419 or being a Yahoo boy. That is something we should be proud of.

“We are generally considered to be more honest and less corrupt than other Nigerians. That is something we should be proud of. In addition, our demographic superiority gives us a very powerful tool to negotiate in politics. And that is something we should be proud of, and we should preserve. So, we have every reason to unite and not be divided.

“I, therefore, call on you the youth; you account for 80 per cent of the northern population and the future of this region lies in your hands, not in the hands of Dinosaurs like me. I’m 59 and among the oldest five per cent of the northern population. I shouldn’t even be governor; I should have been governor ten years ago. But ‘na condition make crayfish bend,’ so we are here.

“But, why are we here? In my view, we are here to prepare the next generation of leaders. That is why the agenda for this summit is very important. So, you should take the panel discussions very seriously and come up with very clear and implementable decisions that you will circulate to all of us elected to lead in northern Nigeria.
