top10nigeria: The good thing about nairaland is you’ll never know me so I can write everything and not worry about my identity.
I work offshore and my Wife works offshore(Sub-sea Engineer). I work 2weeks tour while she works 4weeks tour.
The surest way of working offshore is to graduate first Class Engineering/Geo Sciences. My Wife had a first Class Chemical Engineering and Mine is Electronics. Production Oil companies won’t even invite you for Aptitude test if you do not have a 2-1 that is 4.0 and above. And now we have a lot of Nigerians with masters from UK, so its becoming harder for them to employ people with first degree. Now I am assuming you don’t have connections and your Parents are as broke as mine were when they were sending me to school. So that is one path to working offshore and I will call these people employed directly by the Oil companies as Level 1.
Another path is to be a Technical Non-Pro, eg. Cook, Secretary, medical, laundry, welder, painter, deck hands, etc… To make it easier, I will label this Level 2. Most of these people are on contract so they don’t get same level of compensation.
Eg. The average cook/laundry staff earns 840,000/yr
Average Technical Support eg. Pipe fitter/secretary/Welder etc will earn 4-8million a year
But the level 1 guys earn more.
Eg. Personally I earned a total remuneration of 32million last year and my wife Earned 23million last year. (I work for the majors while my Wife works for a Drilling Company – the majors(Exxonmobil / Total/ Shell / Chevron / Agip) always pay more than the drilling (Schlumberger / Transocean / Halliburton)
So the first thing I want those who want to work offshore to do is decide what type of job they want to do offshore. Do you want to be Level 1 or Level 2?
Personally, I have 15yrs of experience and I work in a production company so I am high paying. I don’t think there is anybody within my team including the 2year olds who earns a TR of less than 20million.
So I will encourage you guys to go back to your books and read them so hard.
For me the best part of working offshore is the 2weeks off. I will not transfer to the office for a 200% increase in wages and maybe its because I started working offshore when I was 18. Plus I work on measurement and control systems, so I don’t do any physical work like my folks in mechanical who have to work on pumps, so I am on the best job in the world right now. Also, the Time off allows me to spend time on my other endeavors and For me that is the best part of working offshore. Note: My Wife hates it, but because I am away half of the time, she is managing the job until she can go back to school for her masters.
I hope this adds a different perspective to the conversation.

You should be talking about swamp and not deep waters I suppose. The houseboats used in swamp will get lost if it dares crosses to seawater. Offshore, aside the FPSO's and platforms, you have thruster enabled vessels mostly owned by Sea Trucks Group named Jascons....

Usually, your would company pays for your BOSIET and HUET. It is mandatory and believe me DPR officials are seriously ensuring that u have these before going offshore. These training are not to teach you to swim during a mishap, but rather they will only teach you how to survive in water until search-and-rescue team arrives.. You can't swim across the ocean, don't even try.. The first survival lesson is "Conserve your energy to enable you stay alive for a longer time"
i want to switch from LNG vessel to Rig platform, do i still need to do BOSIET, cos i have all four basic courses including Survival crafts, Gas tank fam, ship health enviro,And security duties at sea and so on?

You sound like have been on ABO FPSO.. Anyway, you forgot to add that there are emergency drills performed on a routine basis (fire, toxic gases, Pirates, man-over board, etc). Also, people (especially first times) tend to develop sea sickness (nausea and vomiting).unfortunately for me, my shift made me miss, Xmas, new year, Easter, anniversaries last year.. But in all, when u see your pay slip, you somehow forget the pains...lol.,. Am a subsea engineer
Since i stated sailing i have Missed New year, Xmas, Easter for the past 3 years and counting, all because my work time didnt fall as i wanted undecided
Am a Marine engineer.

upengineer: well,
I work on a FPSO in Gulf of Guinea. I am in operations. Ironically, I got the job through an advert I responded to here on Nairaland. Its been three years now flying "chopper" and I have never had any regret whatsoever. The environment is challenging and interesting. Sights of sharks and Dolphins is normal then migratory birds also visit once its their time to migrate. Weather is a low side of offshore particularly when you have dressed up ready to go home after staying away from home for 14days only to be told chopper wont come because of bad weather and you will have to put on your coverall again back to work. Its fun and interesting. Food is also another negative side. You have to wakeup and eat as early as 6:30am. If you are not use to eating early then there will be a problem. In all, no regret working offshore!

Health / Re: Ebola: Lagos Govt Identifies 59 Contacts With dead Liberian Victim by ifyn4real: 12:19pm On Jul 29, 2014
US STATE DEPARTMENT EBOLA ALERT
In order to help our Embassy Community better understand some key points about Ebola virus we consulted with our medical specialists at the U S State Department & assembled this list below, worded in plain language for easy understanding.
• The suspected reservoirs for Ebola are fruit bats.

• Transmission to humans is thought to originate from infected bats or primates that have become infected by bats. Undercooked infected bat and primate (bush) meat transmits the virus to humans.

• Human to human transmission is only achieved by physical contact with a person who is acutely and gravely ill from Ebola virus or their body fluids.

• Transmission among humans is almost exclusively among caregiver family members or health care workers tending to the very ill.

• The virus is easily killed by contact with soap, bleach, sunlight, or drying. A washing machine will kill the virus in clothing saturated with infected body fluids.

• A person can incubate the virus without symptoms for 2-21 days, the average being 5-8 days before becoming ill. THEY ARE NOT CONTAGIOUS until they are acutely ill.

• Only when ill does the viral load express itself first in the blood and other bodily fluids (e.g vomit, feaces, urine, breast milk, semen and sweat).

• If you are walking around you are not infectious to others. • There r documented cases from Kikwit, DRC of an Ebola outbreak in a village that had the custom of children never touching an ill adult.Children living for days in one room huts with parents who died from Ebola did not become infected

. • You cant contract Ebola by handling money or swimming in a pool.

•There's no medical reason to stop flights, close borders, restrict travel or close embassies, businesses or schools.

• Always practice good hand washing techniques, you will not contract Ebola if you do not touch a dying person.
Pls share this information & try not to spread panic on social media.Stay Safe & WellHappy Eid.

sacheplatinum: i want to buy neodymium magnets to fit a particular specification.
I would be very happy if anyone could help out.
I tried ordering from china, but i couldnt speak the language.

As for those of you ignorant folks who dont believe it works, check on it first. Do some proper research. Nigeria would advance seriously if people stopped depending on the government for anything and do it themselves.
I dont see the big deal. If you want to keep paying PHCN as well as buying fuel for your generators, pls go on ahead. Leave us who want to build the generator.

P.S.: Info on the magnets would be glady appreciated.
