Enugu Airport: State Tasks Aviation Firm On Cargo Equipment

The Enugu State Government has appealed to the National Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) to provide cargo handling equipment at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport for the export of agricultural produce.
The state’s Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Dr Jude Akubuilo, made the appeal in Enugu on Wednesday at an interactive session with students of the Armed Forces Command College, Senior Course 37, who were on a tour of the state.
Akubuilo said the equipment would ease the evacuation of fresh agricultural produce and create job opportunities for youths in the state.
He lamented that efforts by the state government to collaborate with the company to provide the equipment to create market for the farmers in the state had failed.
He also called on the Federal Government to approve the establishment of a free trade zone in the South East zone.
“We are losing money. We appeal to NAHCO to help us provide the cargo equipment so that we can transit out of oil and invest more in agriculture,’’ he said.
In his remarks, the state’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Mike Eneh, said the state had created a value chain approach targeted at making every small scale farmer a commercial one.
He said the state had invested more than N5 billion on rice production and gotten more than N1.488 billion on the sale of poultry products.
He listed some challenges stalling the development of agriculture in the state to include bureaucracy, sabotage and difficulty to extend support to farmers.
“We do not want isolated projects that cannot be delivered. We want to project agriculture as a business in Enugu State,’’ he said.
Eneh said the state had commenced the export of pineapples to other countries of the world.
The Team Leader of the college, Cmdr. Obi Ofodile, said the visit was in line with the course curriculum.
He said that the team would visit states and the theme for this year was ‘exploring agricultural potentials of Enugu State for socio-economic development’.
He said the students were in Enugu for on-the -spot assessment and that whatever their findings would reflect on their reports, which would include solutions to help the state develop its agriculture.
Ofodile expressed happiness with the improvement in agriculture in the state.
“I think the state is trying a lot in agriculture. If you have seen what is happening to our oil, it is imperative for states to promote agriculture,’’ Ofodile said.
Some of the students from Ghana and Togo called for improved budgetary allocation to agriculture to augment the fall in oil price.
The group also paid a courtesy visit on Gov. Sullivan Chime of Enugu State.

Total Builds $900m Pipeline to Supply Gas to Alaoji Power Station in Abia State

Posted by: The Citizen in Business, Other News August 26, 2014

Mrs. Elisabeth Proust, MD, Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria
Hope for improvement in power supply in Nigeria has been rekindled as French oil giant, Total has stated that it has built a $900 million worth of pipeline infrastructure to supply gas from the company’s Oil Mining Lease (OML) 58 to the 964 megawatt-capacity Alaoji Power Station in Abia State.
The new Managing Director of Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria, Mrs. Elisabeth Proust, who confirmed this investment to THISDAY at the weekend, however, stated that for the investment of such magnitude to be economic in Nigeria, the price of domestic gas should be increased from its current level of $2.5 to $7 per million British Thermal Unit (BTU).
“We have invested in very huge pipeline onshore – 50 kilometres of 24-inch pipeline, starting from OML 58 to go to Imo River and to Alaoji. Here, we are already in contract with the power plant at Alaoji. This is our first customer. We will be ready to deliver the gas by 2015. So, we are now in negotiation with other industries, not power plants, to provide them with gas. My plan is that in 2017, we should produce and supply the gas through the pipeline,” she said.
Proust said it was a huge pipeline that transverse several communities, adding that the company has spent $900 million on the project.

She however, said to ensure that such project was economic, domestic gas price should be increased to between $5 and $7 per million British Thermal Unit.
According to her, the recent improvement in domestic gas price cannot make such project economic.
“To get the economy of such project, we need to have a good price. The improvement in gas price is good. But we can say that it cannot provide the economy of such pipeline project. I hope that we will achieve a better price so that we can have the economy of such investment,” she added.
The Total boss further disclosed that her company will supply gas to Alaoji at a price of $2.5, adding however, that this price is not adequate to guarantee adequate returns on the investment.
“So, we have made calculations on that and we can say that for the fiscal terms in the joint venture and production sharing contracts, we need between $5 and $7 per million BTU for the development of such facilities. If the fiscal terms change, may be, we will need more. It depends on how they change,” she explained.

Nigeria: Chime Promises Improved Environment for Investors

Gov. Sullivan Chime of Enugu State on Thursday said that ongoing infrastructural development of the state had boosted its economic profile.

Chime made the statement in Enugu at the inauguration of Tetra Log Limited's Mercedes Benz Sales and Services Center.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Rev. Raphael Nwoye, said that his administration was committed to removing all barriers hindering the growth of commerce in the state.

He announced that the state government had set up a steering committee to work out modalities to deal with issues of multiple taxation and related matters.

He also said that the state had benefitted from the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, adding that the state had been adjudged as one of the fastest growing economies in the country.

Chime assured that his administration would sustain ongoing investment opportunities in the state.

He commended the management of Tetra Log Ltd. for citing the service centre in the state.

Earlier, the Managing Director of the company, Mr Onuorah Nnabugwu, said that the choice of Enugu for the investment was based on merit. Nnabugwu said that the investment would bring a turn-around in the fortunes of the state. He said that the company was given the right by the Federal Government to produce Mercedes Benz parts and assured that the company, in doing so, would comply with government's new automotive policy. He said that the measure would give the company the leverage to engage in the production of some equipment, including water/fuel tankers and troop carriers.

A representative of Daimler AG of Germany, a partner to Tetra Log, Dr Kloja Rebstock, expressed happiness that Mercedes Benz had sustained its growth in Nigeria. He said that the company would support Tetra to provide quality services to its customers, noting that "even after over 100 years of, Mercedes Benz has continued to maintain quality services to the people."

Enugu- The first set of 36 commercial helicopter pilots trained in the country graduated from the Nigerian Air Force International Helicopter Flying School in Enugu State on Friday.

Vice President Namadi Sambo said at the graduation that the pioneer helicopter pilots ever trained in the country would help to ensure safety, security and development of the aviation sector.

According to him, it is a monumental achievement that will stand the test of time.

Sambo said “this is a clear testimony that the Nigerian Air Force is moving in the right direction toward fulfilling its mandate as the centre of excellence which is in line with the transformation agenda of the Federal government.

“I charge you all to sustain the tempo so that this school will compete with other flying international schools.

“This is just the beginning. In the near future, this institution will not only train pilots but will maintain and manufacture aircraft.’’

The vice president urged the new pilots to work harder and be good ambassadors of the school and the country in general.

In his remarks, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosun, commended the Federal Government for its support toward ensuring that the goals of the school were met.

Amosun said that the school, established in 2012, was aimed at encouraging air force personnel to have civil licences and ratings to enable them to reintegrate into the civil society when they disengaged from service.

He pledged the commitment of the force in providing quality services to the aviation sector.

The Chairman, Board of Directors of the school, Prince Arthur Eze, called on the students to distinguish themselves in order to encourage more entrants into the school.

The Rector of the school, Group Capt. Ismaila Yahaya, said that the school offered 11 different helicopter courses, including integrated helicopter pilot course and instrument rating.
He said the graduates were sponsored by the Nigerian Air Force, the Navy, Police and the Yobe government, while three were privately sponsored.

Some of the graduating students who spoke said said the training had prepared them for the challenges ahead in flight operations.

The new pilots include Lt. Patrick Onah, Abdulkarim Ibrahim and Ndah Ekerete.

Highlights of the event were the inauguration of the NAF 305 headquaters and presentation of certificates to the graduating students by the vice president.

Dignitaries at the event include Gov. Sullivan Chime of Enugu State and his Deputy, Rev. Ifeanyi Nwoye, as well as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Chief Hope Uzodinma and former Governor of Enugu State, Chief Jim Nwobodo.

Governor Obiano is really serious in boosting Agriculture in Anambra State.

Anambra purchases 100 tractors to boost Agric

BY ENYIM ENYIM

ONITSHA—Anambra State government is to purchase 100 tractors in the first week of May as part of plans to boost agriculture in the state.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Nnamdi Mekoh, who dropped the hint yesterday in an interview with Vanguard, said the tractors would be made available to farmers and harvesters on hire basis, adding that improved maize, rice and cassava cuttings would be made available to farmers by the Ministry of Agriculture.

“We are also making arrangement with Rainbow Chicken in South Africa to come here and make chicken cheaper for us here. It is expected that they would be producing 1.5 million chickens daily. And this would offer jobs to thousands of our unemployed youths,” he said.

According to Mekoh, the government of Governor Obiano is committed to total revolutionisation of agriculture in the state, with the N5.9bn appropriated for the Ministry of Agriculture, against the N1.6 bn that had been appropriated in the budget before now.

Besides, he said the state government under the former governor, Mr Peter Obi, had accessed N1.2 billion from Agricultural Credit Bank that would be disbursed to small scale farmers this year.

The Largest Poultry in West Africa Imo poultry begins sale of birds, to breed over 100,000 before year end

By akachukwu / September 9, 2014 / 0 Comments

OWERRI – The Imo State Government said it has commenced the sale of the first batch of its birds at the State Modern Poultry, Avutu.

Gov. Rochas Okorocha made this known on Tuesday at Avutu in Obowo Local Government Area at the flag-off of the first sale of about 10,000 chickens raised in the farm.

The governor, represented by the Speaker, Imo House of Assembly, Mr Benjamin Uwajimogu, expressed satisfaction that the poultry, one of the legacies of late Chief Sam Mbakwe administration, had come back to life.

He said the poultry had remained moribund for over 20 years.

Okorocha said his administration decided to revive the poultry as part of its efforts to create employment opportunities, promote agriculture, as well as boost the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the state.

He said that his government would not rest on its oars until all moribund industries in the state were revamped, and abandoned projects completed.

“The Poultry, within its few months of reactivation, has produced the first batch of over 10,000 chickens for sale to the public.

“The farm will make available more than 100,000 birds for sale by December 2014,” he said.

Okorocha said the farm had the capacity to house over 2.5 million birds, as well as provide investment in other areas like fisheries, livestock, feed production, processing and packaging of frozen chickens.

He called on investors to take advantage of the opportunities available in the project.

The Speaker pledged the donation of 20,000 chicks to the poultry, as part of his contribution to the development of the farm.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Frank Ibezim, recounted the journey to the reactivation of the Imo Modern Poultry by the present administration, and commended the governor for his vision.

Ibezim noted that the poultry farm, the largest in South Saharan Africa, is situated on about 177 hectres of land with 45 poultry houses of 2.5 million birds’ capacity.

He said the farm had a feed mill of 3,000 metric tons silo, as well as hatcheries, a layer capacity of 235,000 birds and about 100 ton cold room for preservation of processed chickens.

The commissioner also noted that the government was working in collaboration with a South African Agric investment company, Whawna Crux, to rehabilitate the Poultry and make it function to full capacity.

He said the farm would engage both skilled and unskilled manpower; provide capacity building to youths on modern poultry keeping.

He said it would also involve empowerment and provide bye-off and processing services for poultry farmers in the state.

The Commissioner for Community Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Val Mbamala, however, expressed regret over the neglect of investment projects by previous administrations, saying it led to poor revenue generation in the state.

He commended Okorocha for rehabilitating the Poultry, the Imo Rubber Company, and Imo Palm Plantation, among others.

The traditional ruler of Avutu Autonomous Community, Eze Ebel Chukwuocha, expressed happiness that the farm would engage unemployed youths in the area.

He assured the government of the continued support of the people of the area. (NAN)

RareDiamond: I foresee a massive agricultural boom never witnessed in Igboland recent time coming to Ala Igbo. Just yesterday governor Obiano on Channels tv signed an MoU with a private sector investor to commence revival and production from the big Omor rice mill which would source supply from 10,000 hectares of land owned by co-operatives and the private sector. The biggest cassava flour plant in the south east is under construction in Abiriba Abia State with 5,000 hectares of land allocated to the plant. Co-operatives and rural farmers are billed to benefit from this plant.

You are right !!! Below is what i found online

FG procures N13b rice, cassava flour mills

• Ratifies Lagos-Abidjan expressway

By Chesa Chesa / Senior Correspondent, Abuja

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved N13 billion for the procurement of 10 integrated rice mills and six high quality cassava flour mills to boost domestic rice and cassava production.

The FEC also approved a contract of N568million ($2.2m plus N208.5m) for the design and supply of a bigger transformer for the Maiduguri sub-station on Bagga Road, Borno state.

Briefing journalists after the weekly FEC meeting, Minister of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina, said the rice mills would be located in 10 states – Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Ogun, Bayelsa, Niger, Kogi, Anambra, Benue and Bauchi – while the cassava mills would be deployed to Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Delta, Cross River, Nassarawa states.

Each of the rice mills has a capacity to mill 36,000 metric tonnes of paddy rice, making it a total of 360,000 metric tonnes of paddy rice to be finely processed across the country.

There are plans for more integrated rice mills across the country as government was currently working towards a total stop to the importation of rice.

According to Adesina, the mills “will not be owned or run by government, they are going to be owned managed and operated by the private sector, it’s part of government’s way of making this available at a term of financing that can be afforded by the private sector.

“The acquisition of this will be done by the Bank of Industry. It will select the private sector people, they will have the down payment, and the plants are going to be constructed and they have a financing facility for them to own it.

“Government is just doing its job which is to get things to happen, but the private sector will do every single thing about it. There are still those who go around trying to get waivers to import rice and throw us into poverty, this will no longer be possible”.

IN TERMS OF IGR, RIVERS STATE COMES SECOND AFTER LAGOS AND IN TERMS OF GROSS ALLOCATION AKWA IBOM COMES FIRST FOLLOWED BY RIVERS STATE YET RURAL AND UNDEVELOPED STATES LIKE OGUN, OYO, OSUN ETC HAVE FAR MORE DEBT BURDENS THAN RIVERS AND AKWA IBOM STATE. EVEN MY DELTA STATE THAT IS ECONOMICALLY DEVELOPED AND INDUSTRIALIZED WITH REFINERY, STEEL ROLLING MILL, VARIOUS OIL COMPANIES, GAS PLANTS, POWER PLANTS, OIL FLOW STATIONS. 2 AIRPORTS, SEAPORTS, INDUSTRIAL PARKS, MARKETS AND OTHER INDUSTRIES AND LARGE TOWNS OF ASABA, OGWASHI UKWU, WARRI, SAPELE, AGBOR, UGHELLI, IGUBUZO ETC, IS OWING JUST $18m COMPARED TO OYO $76.6m OGUN $102m AND OSUN $62.7m RESPECTIVELY AND THESE HUGE DEBT VALUES ARE NOT INCLUSIVE OF THEIR DOMESTIC DEBTS WHICH RUNS IN HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS.

SO WHAT HAVE THE SW APC GOVERNORS ACHIEVED WITH ALL THESE HUGE DEBTS ?
