Webmasters / Learn Html5 And Ccs3 Free From Mozilla School Of Webcraft by ign1tew3b: 4:47pm On Jan 07, 2011
Mozilla is getting ready for the January semester of School of Webcraft, a 100% free developer training resource run in partnership with Peer 2 Peer University.

Last semester, the School of Webcraft offered 15 classes; now, Mozilla is trying to get around 30 classes going for the January semester.

Classes will be between six and 10 weeks long; they’ll revolve around topics relevant to web designers and developers, including HTML5, JavaScript and CSS. Previous classes have also included non-developer topics such as organic SEO. Requisite skill levels will run the gamut from novice to expert. The volunteer-run courses will begin on January 26, and proposals for new course ideas are still being accepted.

Students learn through a combination of free and open learning materials, online study groups and hands-on assignments that test their hacking skills.

If you’re a leader in the developer community, you can also step up and lead a course yourself. If you want to organize a class, you’ll get support from P2PU and Mozilla in the form of course design, materials, learning facilitation and other resources.

Webmasters / Rating Of Nigerians Website by ign1tew3b: 10:19am On Jan 06, 2011
Welcome to the Ignite Web Report for 2010. Our goal is to provide the Nigerian Web development community with a specific benchmark by which to define the standard of excellence for Website development.

Our data is taken from a quantitative methodology that, over time, has allowed us to establish clear benchmarks for a significant number of industries.
Our judges have over 40 years combined experience in web consulting and have deliver solutions both within and without Nigeria.
Our report for this year covers two sectors of the Nigerian economy; these are the banking and telecommunications sectors.

CRITERIA

We evaluate Web sites based on six criteria: content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, and overall experience.
Web critique, like Web development, is not an exact science. Powerful new ideas and applications arise constantly, reshaping old ideas or paving over them. Not every site listed scores 10 across the judging table. The weight of each category varies with the goal of each site; a Web site is much more than the sum of its parts.

CRITERIA

1. Content
2. Structure and Navigation
3. Visual Design
4. Functionality
5. Interactivity
6. Overall Experience

Webmasters / Social Media Isn’t Merely About Creating Twitter Profiles And Facebook Pages. In by ign1tew3b: 10:11am On Jan 05, 2011
Social Media isn’t merely about creating Twitter profiles and Facebook pages.

In fact, developing profiles and pages is only one of the many tasks in your business’ quest for social media success. I often say that social media isn’t a short cut to success for businesses. It was never meant to be. And attempts to make it work as a short cut are liable to result in catastrophic effects for any business.

So, now that your business has taken the first step in the right direction by deciding to embrace social media, what next? How do you script a social media success story for your business? In this post, I present to you the  pillars of social media success for your business.

1) Do your homework and get started

The first and perhaps the most important step to ensuring social media success for your business is “getting started”. It’s crucial to shed any inhibitions and overcome the mental block of uncertainty associated with adopting a new paradigm such as social media. It’s equally important to know what you want from your social media efforts and establish well-defined goals in a realistic timeframe. Analyze your competition; know what they are doing well in the social media circles and their weaknesses. I’m sure there’s a gap in their social media strategy which you can exploit for your business gains.
A good start is half the job done and social media adoption for your business is no exception to that rule.

2) Your social media profile – First impression is the last impression

Your social media profile represents the online identity for your business, and that’s not something you’d like to risk with half-measures. Building an impressive and informational profile is a must for any business aiming to leverage social media to boost its revenues. Your profile is also the primary avenue of engaging with customers; therefore it deserves a lot of serious thought process and equally well-planned execution.
Develop an impressive persona for your business; it’s worth the investment.

Webmasters / Google Analytics: Speeding Up Your Online Development by ign1tew3b: 10:08am On Jan 05, 2011

It’s not just that it’s free, easy to customize, and visually rich (the graphs are sort of like…data-centric rainbows).

Google Analytics is a great resource because it gives you detailed insight into who visits your website, how they get there and what they do once they arrive. But to reap the full benefit, you’ve got to know what to do with the information once you’ve got it.

What It Looks Like: Juice As an Example
Say your website sells Juice nationwide. You’re interested in the following data:
To see who is visiting your site, Google Analytics generates an interactive map with continents, countries, states, and cities shaded according to how many visitors hail from each location. Where are you visitors coming from? Where are the areas of opportunity?

Webmasters / Wema Bank Website by ign1tew3b: 1:29pm On Dec 06, 2010
The difference between a good website and a world class website depends on ‘how much’ has been invested in its making.

Ignite makes it a point of duty to hand pick top Nigerian brands to see how their websites perform and our reviews are objective and impartial.
This week, wemaPlc has been chosen for analysis.

Each website has something extra to make it stand out from the crowd. I hope you enjoy the website reviews from our web professionals.

After extensively going through the Wema Bank Plc website, we found out that the site uses some of the best web trends.
• The site had 150 Html Errors, 76 warnings
• Had 12 CSS errors with 617 browser warnings
• Total page size 3820.8kb
• Html page size 30943.8bytes
• Load time on 56k internet connection 117.7 seconds

Other than the clean layout of the landing page we were not too impressed with the Wema Bank web site, we found that it looked and had features that made it feel like a toned down version of another bank website even with that the site was flood with a lot of error and some very unneeded functions all in the name of making content easily accessible

Nairaland / General / 8 Social Media Trends Impacting Businesses by ign1tew3b: 7:03pm On Dec 01, 2010
s businesses continue to integrate social media and become more confident and comfortable with social media tools and platforms, we’re starting to see a change in social media usage. A new study reveals what’s changing with social media.

SmartBrief recently partnered with Summus Limited to survey more than 6,000 of its readers across a variety of industries.

They benchmarked and measured the state of social media usage among businesspeople. The data identified eight prevalent trends that give great insight into the social media behaviors, beliefs and challenges of the majority of businesses today.

#1: Companies Are Still New to Social Media
Most companies (66.5%) have adopted social media in the past 18 months. About half of the companies reported they’ve only been using social media for about a year and about 20% reported they’ve adopted social media practices in the past 13 to 18 months.

Webmasters / Social Media Analytics by ign1tew3b: 12:47pm On Nov 26, 2010
With the announcement of Twitter’s plan to launch analytics for their platform, it got me thinking about the progression of analytics in terms of all social media. As a business owner, it’s important to define benchmarks and analyze whether these benchmarks are being met.

Programs like Google Analytics offer an in-depth insight into your company’s targeted conversions, whether that’s selling a certain number of boots per month or having a certain amount of visitors download a PDF. However, the data supplied by GA and similar analytics solutions are necessarily limited to things happening on the site already.

Since the explosion of social media there’s become a need to quickly and effectively monitor success rates, and this must often be done off-site.

Webmasters / Webdesign Just Got Cooler For Sizzle by ign1tew3b: 11:42am On Nov 26, 2010
ho says bring a nerd can’t be cool? well there is a new version of the lorem ipsum so next time you feel like adding some spice to your sample layout’s you should look Lorizzle.nl.

Hyping itself as “the gangsta lorem ipsum generator,” this site is the delight of our developer/design backchannel today. It generates an “-izzle” and “yo mama”-spiked version of standard Lorem Ipsum text, and a different version is generated each time you refresh the page.

Sample:

Morbi interdum. Fo shizzle my nizzle rizzle. Gizzle . Brizzle elizzle ante, ullamcorpizzle nizzle, ullamcorpizzle fizzle, my shizz gizzle, leo. Morbi shizzle my nizzle crocodizzle hizzle. Computers / Cloud Computing And Financial Applications by ign1tew3b: 11:39am On Nov 26, 2010
Should anyone put their financial applications in the cloud?”

This is another cloud-based question I get with some frequency.

Lots of financial applications exist in the on-premise world and the numbers of solutions for the SaaS, multi-tenant, cloud world are growing quickly. Four vendors I’ve spent a lot of time with include: FinancialForce, Workday, NetSuite and Intacct. Each of these has customers running their financial applications in the cloud. Another vendor, Corefino, uses applications like these to provide cloud-based accounting/finance and bookkeeping services in the cloud for their clients. So, are companies using the cloud for financial applications? Absolutely. Will more do so? Absolutely.

First, few technologies ever really go away completely and few, if any, ever achieve 100% market share. On-premise applications are not going away. Cloud solutions won’t completely replace on-premise solutions. Zealots for either position aren’t happy with a mixed bag but that’s the reality of the software world. So, the argument is not will either delivery method crush the other. No, the questions should be focused on the eventual uptake/market share for cloud/SaaS financial software and the time needed to achieve this. Cloud/SaaS financial applications will continue to gain market share (99+% probability) and on-premise solutions will lose market share, if only due to superior economics of the former. Timing is the key issue.

For the sales people trying to get customers to move their on-premise financial applications to the cloud, these sales are often tough to complete. The reasons for this are varied and sometimes subtle.

Finance software buyers (that is, Controllers and CFOs) are usually a risk-adverse, ROI focused lot. Any new (on-premise or cloud-based) financial accounting software sale must overcome a number of concerns. These include:

Webmasters / Html5 – Still A Long Away To Go by ign1tew3b: 11:27am On Nov 26, 2010
The Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) started work on the HTML5 specification in June 2004; Ian Hickson of Google, Inc. is the editor of HTML5. HTML5 still has a long way to go.

A long way to go
The specification is an ongoing work, and is expected to remain so for many years, although parts of HTML5 are going to be finished this year and some are already implemented in browsers.

According to the W3C timetable, it was estimated that HTML5 would reach W3C Recommendation by late 2010. However, the First Public Working Draft estimate was missed by 8 months, and Last Call and Candidate Recommendation were expected to be reached in 2008, but as of this writing (November 2010) , HTML5 is still at Working Draft stage in the W3C.

The editor of the HTML5 specification expects the specification to reach the Candidate Recommendation stage during 2012. In sum, HTML5 still has a long, long way to go, so don’t get too excited just yet.

Obviously, browser vendors are keen on implementing as much of the HTML5 spec as possible, especially areas like handling audio and video. This becomes more of a turf war, though, since at this point we are dealing with competition for the Flash and Silverlight plug-ins.

Webmasters / Css Inventor Talks About The Web’s Visual Future by ign1tew3b: 1:22pm On Oct 15, 2010
MR Håkon Wium Lie, the CTO of Opera Software and the inventor of CSS.

Mr. Lie speaks about the history of CSS and why it’s important. He also showed some of the new features that are in the CSS3 spec, like rounded corners, inset text and drop shadows. We’ve been writing about some of these new features, including the <video> tag (which is actually part of HTML5, but is often associated with CSS3) and web fonts over the past few months and we’ll continue to touch on more and more of these trends. Now that the elephant in the room (Internet Explorer) is finally embracing the modern web, thanks to the new IE 9, implementing these features makes more and more sense.

Webmasters / Nigeria's Digital Footprint @50 by ign1tew3b: 2:44pm On Sep 30, 2010
In Nigeria, the internet came to the lime light in the mid 90’s where only employees of major brands and an elite number of home users had access to it, with emails being the main reason why people were online. I remember opening my first email at the headquarters of the then Intercontinental Merchant Bank Limited (Idejo) there were no Cybercafés just business centers that all basic typesetting.

A few years down the line, the cybercafé business became a gold mine, business centers then all quickly converted to cybercafés with as little as 4 to 5 systems, young entrepreneurs springing up at every turn to start cybercafés (even I ran one). Remember people coming in- paying just to open an email account; I mean It was easy money, overtime people learnt to use the internet and competition between café owners grew, café owners started upping their games.

I mean high-end cafes had over 30 systems with Vsat connection, Fully Air-conditioned environment, nice background music. Lol! Some even offered to burn/mix cd for the customers for a token.

Remember then it was about knowing what the competition was offering and doing it better for café owners.

Customers then varied from contractors sending in their LPOs, to students coming in to check and send mails to friends and family aboard and to chat on Yahoo Messenger. We didn’t have Facebook, Myspace or HI5 then; it was all about chatting and browsing for information mainly

In this review of Access Bank’s newly developed website, Ignite discovered some interesting things that we think are worth sharing.

On the other hand, we identified some shortcomings which we believe this review will address, also it would be good to say here that access bank’s website is one of the first bank sites in Nigeria to be deployed using Microsoft Share point.

Webmasters / Re: (c# Asp.net)how Do I Know The Number Of Visitors On My Site by ign1tew3b: 12:17pm On Sep 17, 2010
A couple of years ago it was very fashionable to have a 'Hit Counter' on your website. It supposedly showed the whole world how many 'hits' you've received to date. Today you run the risk of being labeled a newbie, or a hobby website owner if you have a hit counter on your website. The problem with hit counters is that
1. Nobody is quite sure what these 'hits' are counting. As you will see, collecting detail about website statistics is not as straightforward as it sounds. A hit could be anything from a unique visitor to the fact that you've displayed 5 graphical elements on your site (in which case, 5 hits will be recorded!)

2. Hit counters, unlike odometers, are very easy to manipulate. It is not unknown for a desperate webmaster or website owner to set the hit counter to start at a vastly inflated number. Hit counters can also easily be reset - again to any number that you feel like.

3. If you have a website with very low traffic, do you really want to proclaim that to the world? Especially if you are trying to promote your website for advertising purposes (let this be a warning to anyone wanting to advertise on a website - first do some investigation into how much traffic the website gets before laying out big money).
As I mentioned, collecting accurate traffic statistics is not straight forward. Different website statistics tools also have different ways of referring to the traffic.

If you want accurate and measurable result I would advise you get a free web analytics account, this is the professional way of monitoring web traffic

I wouldn't call any of them number one web development firm,

I believe they should be listed as the leading web development outfits in Nigeria based on their portfolio (not the amount of clients but the quality of work and caliber of the clients), their development process and business process, the caliber of their developers (i mean when u have award winning developers our good) and how well they come up with web innovations and keep to web practices.

We are writing an article on this it should be on the site by noon today

We have been in the web industry for a little while now and companies like WOO, RIGTHCLICK, and TAVIA don't do 50k websites. These are companies with at least 15 to 20 professionals working with them and when you look at these brands, it’s all about following top web trends and best practices with a turnout of 6 to 10 websites per year; meaning if you’re not paying in millions you’re not talking to them

yawa-ti-de:

So what determines #1 status?

1) Type of clients?
2) Number of websites churned out in a year?
3) Annual income/net profit?
4) Size of company (number of employees)?
5) Stock price (where applicable)?

I mean, you can't just blurt out "we are #1" or "they are #1" without setting determinants.  For example, A could do 20 sites in a year, at an average price of N50K whereas B does one site for N1m.  Who do you think would be #1 in this case?  I say B.

I personally would go with #3, by the way.

Professionally it would make sense for you to get an analytics account.

Web analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of internet data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage. Web analytics is not just a tool for measuring website traffic but can be used as a tool for business research and market research. Web analytics applications can also help companies measure the results of traditional print advertising campaigns. It helps one to estimate how the traffic to the website changed after the launch of a new advertising campaign. Web analytics provides data on the number of visitors, page views, etc to gauge the traffic and popularity trends which helps doing the market research.
