Nairaland GeneralMy Terrible Experience With The Nigerian Police (8:30am to 9:05am,2nd May, 2025) by ihollarmide(op):
Today was just like any other day. Nothing about it suggested a deviation from the normal. Perhaps I already took for granted the grace to leave my home and return peacefully without any hassles. I had not been reflecting on that massive favor from the Almighty.

I was returning home from Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos where I had gone to do something very early this morning when the Police stopped the public bus I was in at Otedola Bridge, Lagos, and told me to alight. You might ask how my dress was and whether it was flashy. No, it was not. I was clothed in a green Jalabiyyah with a cap.

They asked, "Where are you coming from, and where are you going?". I answered, "I am coming from Ikeja and going to Mowe, Ogun State".
"What do you do? Where do you work? Give me your phone!!!" They all fired in succession, leaving no room for answers. "As calmly as possible, I answered, 'I am a Senior Frontend Engineer at ****.'
"Senior Frontend Engineer", one of them imitated me mockingly. "You are a Yahoo Boy abi, a scammer, a thief, a fraudster", he continued.

"Sir, I am not a fraudster. I work for my company as a programmer," I replied. He grinned, his face lit up. "Oya, where is your company located?"
"It's not a Nigerian company, I work remotely from home. The company is situated in ****," I replied. As he asked those questions, another policeman was going through my phone. He was scurrying through my gallery and chats looking for any incriminating material frantically. The third policeman asked for my company ID card but I told him I had none because my company doesn't currently provide one. That was it, they pounced on that immediately and were all seething angrily. "You be yahoo boy jare, you dey work for people wey you never see and no even get ID card, we go carry you go station now now".

"What did I do?" I asked, my voice beginning to tremble at the thought of going to their station, NOT because I had committed any crime but because I knew how messy the system was, based on what we had all heard. This is a system that lacks due process and greatly excels at punishing the innocent.

While this was going on, my Uncle's call came in. He wanted to ask where I was and if I was already done with what I went to do in Ikeja. I begged them to let me pick up the call after which I told him what was happening. He spoke with them and told me to show them my letter of employment as proof since I do not have a work ID. I proceeded to redownload that on my phone from my email and showed them. I thought that would be enough but alas, it wasn't!

I was escorted to their vehicle and forced to sit in a corner while they held their guns as if they were preparing to shoot me. I was told to call my Uncle that the issue had been resolved and was on my way home. I called and told him but that was a lie since I had no choice and was under duress. The Policeman sitting next to me then asked me if I could pay them 500,000 naira to be freed. I told them I didn't have up to that. They proceeded to ask about what I studied in school, my area of residence, and other personal info. My Uncle kept calling but I was unable to pick up the phone. After some time, the most senior one among them told me I was going to pay them 20,000 naira to be freed. I agreed since I just wanted to be out of there at that moment.

After agreeing to pay, I offered to transfer the amount but they declined. They started the vehicle and started driving towards Berger. When we got to the Pedestrian Bridge at Berger, they beckoned a random POS operator to come. I was instructed to transfer the money to her and given cash in return. After handing the cash to them, they dropped me at the New Garage bus stop at Berger, Lagos.

As I alighted, they watched me board the bus to Mowe before setting off. This was such a scary experience and I still can't stop thinking of how things could have gotten much worse. Most of the similar horror stories we hear about people's encounters with the Police started this same way. This was a route I was familiar with and a city I was accustomed to. The Nigerian Police Institution needs solid reform.

The only thing you guys managed to prove with this comment is that truly ignorance is ubiquitous in the black man's land....
And you think of yourself as an "enlightened black man" simply because you swallow all you are told by the "white man" hook, line and sinker because you think he has no agenda and can't lie. Stop being so myopic and reason. Be skeptical and logical. So you expect me to believe those footprints were left by a dinosaur that roamed 230 million years ago?.. Lmao. What are the hard facts?
Why do those prints always belong to a dinosaur? Can't those prints be there as a result of some other factors?

@Bignuell and @Feranmhine, the battery has significantly improved. Another way to improve and maximize the battery life is to totally disable the wi-fi signal if you don't need it to connect to a wide array of devices and connect through a Lan Cable.

Yes, it's called hide. Hide the 5.0Ghz

2.4Ghz is more than enough. That's the one used on a lot of Routers
Alright. Thank you so much

Regarding the battery, you can make it last longer by changing the default settings. When I got mine, it barely lasted for 3 hours but now it lasts as long as 7 hours.

You need to change the WIFI signal range. I think by default it's set to the highest. Change it to the lowest and disable the second WIFI

It comes with 2 WIFI connections by default. You only need one
Wow. Thank you so much. Which would you advise me to disable between the 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz? The 5.0Ghz has a shorter range and is said to have the more powerful and faster signal.
Moreover, I can only see the hide SSID option and can't see the disable option

They are both very useless. I have a MTN Hynet router and Spectranet.

MTN Hynet Router has a terrible download speed but fantastic upload speed.

I recommend Spectranet. I'm currently on their Lagos Plan which is 70gb for 15k and most times I get extra 70gb a total of 140gb per month because they're always running double data promo

Modified: I'm just reading about where you said you're not within Spectranet coverage. That's unfortunate.

My personal opinion is that I still prefer MTN over Airtel as they have better coverage.

I recommend you purchase an ordinary MTN router or mifi and subscribe to their normal data tarrif.

My experience is that they are much better both in speed and network quality than Hynet.

Hynet has its own unique data plan that doesn't work on regular routers or modems.
I already went for Mtn hynet router. The battery is poor but that's not really a problem for me. The data is also so expensive. I should have just gone for their ordinary mifi.
Thanks anyways. I really appreciate your response

I am a very heavy data user and consume data in the region of 70GB - 100GB of data per month. In the past, I used to subscribe to the MTN Pulse binge data bundle of 2GB for 2 days. 3 months ago after I got a new smartphone and inserted my airtel sim card, Airtel sent me a message telling me that I am eligible for a 100% data bonus for three months if I purchase data plans within the price range of 500 to 4000 naira. Since then, I have always been doing the 3000 naira for 20GB (10GB main data and 10GB bonus) and I usually do this like 5 times a month.
Now, the offer has elapsed and I am at crossroads as to the best data plan available on either MTN or Airtel because they are the best in my location. Spectranet and Smile are out of it as I am either in Lagos, Abeokuta, or Ibadan, and not one of those service providers has coverage not to talk of excellent coverage in those three areas.

On checking the router plans between Airtel and MTN, I am at a crossroads on the best to go for between the two because they offer competitive prices but MTN slightly has the advantage because it includes a 100% bonus for 3 months on purchase of their Hynet Flex Router.

Who has used any of the two and what can you say about it?
Any advice for me?

Thank you.

I have a relative that has Bsc.Ed. in Health Education from Ekiti State University and wants to proceed to study Nursing in any reputable university in Nigeria. Is it possible for her to use her Health Education degree to get admitted to study Nursing and start from 200/300 level? Or does she need to sit afresh for JAMB examination to get admitted to study Nursing and start at 100 level?

calmnquiet:
It's funny how people see things, we are human beings and we have a choice to like who we want to. But this is too much for one person.

People say he hasn't addressed the nation, I have watched three videos from the White House news channel, where he did, one day at the launch of the SpaceX, at the oval office and an official speech at the rose garden.

The Speech at the rose garden where he talked about sending in soldiers to curb the protests, the speech was cut at different spaces by the media to fuel thier narrative. Even the article that was posted here on NL, did not cover his entire speech. To the extent, he was ridiculed for holding a bible at an historic site where presidents pray, and at the end of the speech he made, the full one, he said hes going to pay respect to the church just burnt down by protesters.

Why does the media cut the speeches to fuel thier narratives?
The media does not talk about the meeting he held with black leaders in the White House recently, and if you do care to find and watch it, you will see how divided the black race is, those present at the meeting talked about countless things he has done for the black community, things you dont hear of and they praise his stance against so many things.

It's still the same thing as 2016, vigorous campaign against Donald Trump, then they get shocked that he wins, same thing will happen in 2020, cos the media only report fo you the negatives, those who know the positives are silently watching, waiting for November 3rd.
Yes, people are waiting for November 3rd. I only hope more people research and look beyond the lies of the leftist Mainstream Media (CNN, MSNBC, CBC, BBC) and research facts for themselves. There is nothing that Trump does that isn't evil in their eyes

Speak for yourself...

You only hate him for his stance against manipulative voices, otherwise please name a valid reason. From economy/security stats and standpoint, he had bested Obama's indices not until the pandemic.

He has called terrorists bluff and went ahead to taking them out, which Obama never did..

He is at loggerheads with China over trade imbalance which Nigeria and a host of others are extremely suffering from...

He virtually reduced unemployment to zero and saw American factories returning to base...

How else do you qualify a better president?
Don't mind these people. Most of those just listen to what the Democrats and leftist Mainstream Media tell them. They don't research facts for themselves. He is a better president than Obama. Watch how he floors Joe Biden in November because majority of Americans see beyond this game of identity politics being played by the Left.

Why we were fired?
I joined this company last year, few days after finishing my NYSC, they have the highest number of software developers in Africa and I was loving life, the salary is great with breakfast and lunch

They keep on employing so many software engineer with time the engineer become more than the available job, I saw it coming but I don't know what the board was thinking

2. How did the firing process happen?
We have a global (online) meeting which people are asked not to miss, I was not even listening very well to what they are saying, the president said there are more developer than engagement to they have to let some people go, a mail was sent to all impacted people and I discovered what has just happened

Almost 400 people has been fired across Africa

3. Aftermath of being fired… how did you feel, have you recovered, did you get something better?

The company is actually a great one, they brought in pychologist to speak with us, bring in different recruiter, and other stuff, most importantly the payoff was reasonable that I can afford a Mac laptop of almost half-a-million

Luckily for me I got another reasonable job in less than 3 weeks of been retrenched

I always laugh when people complain there is no job in Nigeria, less than 5 month after leaving my previous company I have turned down almost 4 other offers some even paying than my current one
