Every Igbo understand Igbo central language and not all Igbo dialects.
This is expected in every real ethnic group. Germans in Germany struggle to understand Swiss Germans, hence the use of "Hochdeutsch"( centralized German), when Germans from Swiss land and different states of German want to interact.
I liked Uyo Meyo by Teni and asked my Yoruba friend to interpret the song for. Surprisingly she couldn't, reason being that she sang it in " Ondo town" dialect and not in Central Yoruba dialect.

The idea of Igbo speaking towns with Igala origin is a historical fabrication. What we have are Igbo speaking towns that welcomed Igala migrants in their midsts and subsequently acculturated the Igala migrants into Igbo speaking people. Or in case of Nzam, we have indigenous Igbo speaking town that was invaded by an Igala warlord, but was later recovered back by Igbo indigenes who magnanimously integrated the Igala invaders into the town.
Zik is not a historian and the story of Onitsha being from Bini had since been reviewed and corrected by current Obi of Onitsha.



Olukumi history has been recently reviewed as well. Modern story is that they were Yoruboid people(soldiers) from Owo who were part of Oba Bini imperialism campaign in Anioma. They lost the battle and refused to return to the Oba for fear of being killed. Western Igbos gave them land to live and gave them their daughters to marry. Many western Igbos also joined their settlement to swell it up.
Such is the history of humans.




How exactly?
Arochukwu was a coalition of Igbo with non Igbo Akpa soldiers and few Ibibios. Thereafter, the non Igbos were fully assimilated by the Igbos who were the overwhelming majority of the coalition.

A people culture, beliefs, religion are all preserved by their language. Language is the greatest single marker of ancestral relationship when no documented history can be assessed.

An ethnic group must have a SINGLE language with each region speaking dialects of that language. Anything other than this is fraudulent. Ijaw ethnic group is fraudulent just like Hausa-Fulani ethnic group.



Apoi-Ijaw in Ondo are not speaking Ijaw because they didn't meet the land empty. They met aboriginal Yorubas there (Ilajes) who they intermarried with and their Yoruba wives taught their children Yoruba and probably invited their own Yoruba brothers to live with their husbands to provide security.
So in the end , the community maintained Ijaw origin of the Ijaw migrants, but the overwhelming population of the Ilaje women and their brothers they brought in ensured the town became Yoruba speaking because in truth they have more Yoruba make up than Ijaw make up. A DNA result will prove this.
This is same thing that happened to Kiagbodo and Ofoni.
The head of the family claim Ijaw, so the village retained Ijaw origin, but careful analysis will reveal that majority of the commoners were of Urhobo origin including the wives of the Ijaws, yet to maintain unity in the town, everyone accepts Ijaw origin of the town leader. A DNA analysis of Population of Kiagbodo and Ofoni people would show higher percentage of Urhobo ancestry than Ijaw .
When two languages and culture meet, the language and culture with greater number of people using them usually wins. Unless external force was applied to alter this natural course of events.



In the absence of a documented history. Ancestral stories becomes fables that can easily be doctored to reflect a people political aspirations at any given point in time.

Language however remain objective as a preserver of customs, norms, beliefs and ancestral relationship between groups of people.
