My point has nothing to do with altruism.

These AI companies are the ones telling you and me that what they are building could become an existential threat. So if the developers reach a point where they believe their next step could kill everybody, thry do not need the government to force them to stop taking that step.

They are there to protect the people; they do it when they see issues.

When an AI company is building something they believe will kill us all, but instead of stopping, they continue to build it while asking the government to stop them from killing us, that does not make sense.

My point is and always has been about monopoly for the giants. They don't have to ask government to regulate, the government is already doing that.

Who do you think produce the regulations the government will impose? The AI giants, because they know all the dangers which is AI will kill us all.

Even with written laws, people will do things that endanger other people. So, government regulations don't work.

Because:

But those same people won't do it for altruistic reasons when they are forced to regulate.

Especially when those regulations cost more for small companies and open-source developers than for the giants who can easily absorb them. One should be able to question the hysteria.

Most of the people in this thread saying AI companies should self regulate live in a country where the government doesn't regulate. Do the companies do? No.

Buildings fall down because builders use and are sold shoddy materials, builders take short cuts to maximize profit, roadside sellers pass typhoid like it is a free gift with purchase and all types of goods from the benign to the necessities of life are counterfeited. Everyone just chasing as much naira as they can grab, people's lives be damned.
