I like the US jury system.
It's not perfect, and makes mistakes but I don't know any system that I'd rather be under.

3. The downside of finding her not guilty is if she is guilty, which I can't possibly say since I was not a juror in this case and nor was the evidence presented to me since I was not in court to hear it.

A decision has been made by the jurors who were there and I can live with their decision.

I'm trying not to match your energy but..

1.) You can easily check the Mass. law yourself. So it won't be "according to me". It'll just be the Mass law.

2.) It's hard to get 11 people to agree on something. MA jurors are reasonably educated. So, if there is a hold out there is a reason. Not saying he came biased, but points to it.

3.) I think everyone knows she killed her children. By pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, she is acknowleding that as well. Whether you like the insanity defense, it is still the law. Just like self defense is the law.

4.) Which leads to the final problem. It was a hung jury and a mistrial. So, by definition the jury did not reach a decision. They did not agree. A verdict requires all 12 jurors to agree. So, not verdict. She is still not guilty.

So, now what happens?
The prosecution decides to try the case again at additional cost to the state and since it was an 11-1 jury what is the probability that they will get a guilty conviction the 2nd time or even 3rd time around? Very slim.

And I'm very dispassionate about the case. Just calling it as I see it.

And all the investigation they did was to accept what he said as fact and did not dig deeper.

I know there are several legal technicalities at play here being that she woke up and was told that her husband said that she said she killed the kids and tried to kill herself. She accepted that likely false memory seeing as she can’t remember anything else that happened.

And according to him, she supposedly tried to kill herself by ingesting some drugs, cutting herself in the wrists and neck and then throwing herself from a window?

May them babies rest in peace. The law enforcement failed them by not doing proper investigation.

That's a really high bar.
Given the surroundings of her case, if you were on that jury would you have thought the Prosecution proved that?

She showed signs of mental illness even before the killing.

She spends years behind bars either way.
One is in a mental institution, the other a jail.

Haven't reviewed the case, but I'm sure no one wants to find someone who killed 3 children not guilty.
The problem is the law is the law. And jurors are bound to obey the law. (though I am also comfortable with jury nullification in some cases)
If they believed she didn't have the mens rea due to insanity to commit the crime, then they should have voted not guilty.
But it doesn't mean she goes free, probably will be committed for a long long time.

From my quick reading she didn't seem to be mentally stable before the killings and so it seems 'Not guilty' was the appropriate judgement.
The lone juror seemed not to be focussed on doing his duties as a juror or wanted to nullify the jury.
Again, this is based on a quick reading of the facts.

Under Massachusetts law, when someone pleads not guilty by reason of a “lack of criminal responsibility" — the state’s technical term for the insanity defense — the burden is on the prosecution to prove the defendant was sane at the time of the crimes.
