Livelystone01: The difference between the UK and the US is the fact that both sides are close to the centre than the extreme. And what center is that? The words center/left/extreme don't mean much unless they are in relation to something. ex. US Republicans think Dems are extreme for wanting universal health care. Both sides in the UK are closer to where US liberals are policy wise. |

Livelystone01: Both sides...The right wing and left wing media are the same but from opposite ends.
The right has become far right while the left has gone far left.
Both sides have drowned the voices of the central to the extent that they are scared to speak out. Except Europe is far more liberal than the US. Explain to me how that fact fits with the point you are making,. The difference between the UK and the US is the right wing echo chamber. |

descarado: I asked if you watch cnn cos I stopped watching it like more than 15 yrs ago. Has nothing to do with trump. Somebody said cnn naturally makes your BP rise. If you have hpb, your Dr will tell you to stop watching cnn and BBC. Don't know if that's true but I just stopped since then.
I get curious when people say they watch cnn. That's all.
Una wey dey America go dey alright when you guys decide to get your acts together, work together and foster love. The hatred is so deep and toxic. Both online and offline Even yoruba and igbo hatred for naija no reach this level.
Every country has its challenge but America as it is is so toxic that I wonder where una get it wrong. I do understand for a country without tradition and culture it will be chaotic but this. See as insults are flying up and down everyday. The competition is who will insult better. Look for loophole, rush to nairaland and the insult start. Make sure to flag your wings men.
Uk where I dey is having its deep problems but the UK thread is not as toxic as this place. I love american politics and want to contribute but the insults doesnt go well with me. So also majority that have left this place for very few. Loads of Americans in this forum but they dont even peep in here cos what happens here is adults throwing childish tantrums. They, like me want to come in here and have adult discussions even if we don't agree Una well done. I can't deal.
Erm, please check that link I posted, is it true? Part of the toxicity is the US Right wing Media. The UK doesn't have as extreme a problem because of the laws on the Media and even the libel laws there. Here in the US, Right Wing Media is free to pump out whatever lies and propaganda they want to generate rage. And rage equals revenue. And that is where a lot of the conservatives get their info. A lot of the stuff that is posted here isn't even things to debate. It's like debating whether the Earth is flat. That may explain the difference in the two threads. |

He is simply a Trump candidate who represent himself and his fellow racists, Most of the white Blue collar democrats are now going to vote Trump. This shows he is not appealing to Republican but to those who want to take their country back |

Yet, somehow MAGA who manage their states to be the bottom of the barrel would do a better job than those who have managed their states to the 5th largest GDP? It seems not everyone is as happy as Raumdeuter #factsoverfiction Confidence among U.S. consumers weakened for a second-straight month, reflecting retreating optimism of both current and future conditions at the start of President Trump’s second term and expectations that inflation will rise again.
The index of consumer sentiment published by the Conference Board, a research group, fell 5.4 points to 104.1, it said Tuesday, worse than the 106.0 expected by economists polled by The Wall Street Journal. https://www.wsj.com/economy/u-s-consumers-lose-confidence-at-start-of-trump-second-term-0e48375b

I have to admit, even I wasn't prepared for how lawless this administration would be and the potential devastation his actions could have. I also assumed Democrats would have prepared how they would push back. Trump pausing all aid and loans is going to directly affect A ton of Trump supporters as their states derive a lot of their budget from Federal Assistance Even I'm shocked at the casual disregard for the level of Chaos that will ensue. Can Trump Cancel Government Funds Through Impoundment? What To Know As He Pauses All Federal Assistance.https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2025/01/28/can-trump-cancel-government-funds-through-impoundment-what-to-know-as-he-pauses-all-federal-assistance/How Could The Supreme Court Rule On Impoundment? The dispute over the Impoundment Control Act and whether Trump can take action against congressionally approved funds could be ultimately decided by the Supreme Court—potentially within weeks, if legal action is taken over Monday’s memo. The Supreme Court previously ruled against Nixon’s use of impoundment in the 1975 case Train v. City of New York, a dispute over Nixon withholding funding toward water treatment, though the court noted in its ruling that the Impoundment Control Act was passed while the case was pending and the court’s ruling didn’t impact it and wasn’t affected by it. In an opinion years later in the case Clinton v. City of New York, Justice Antonin Scalia wrote, “President Nixon, the Mahatma Gandhi of all impounders, asserted at a press conference in 1973 that his ‘constitutional right’ to impound appropriated funds was ‘absolutely clear.’ … Our decision two years later in Train v. City of New York proved him wrong.” (He noted Congress can authorize the president to cancel funds, as the Impoundment Control Act allows.) It remains to be seen how the current 6-3 conservative court could come down on the issue, however, though Vladeck wrote he’s skeptical even the current court—which includes three Trump appointees and has been deferential to the president in the past—would be willing to uphold Trump’s broad spending cuts. “It’s one thing to believe that the President must have unitary control of the executive branch,” Vladeck wrote, pointing to the court’s ruling giving Trump some legal immunity, but “it’s quite another to believe that such control extends to the right to refuse to spend any and all money Congress appropriates.” |

Simply Incredible Executive Order Trump is seeing how big of a dictator he can be. He's scuttling the Constitution and the defined roles of the Executive and Congress. Unfortunately, this Congress doesn't seem interested in stopping him. White House pauses federal grants and loanshttps://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c77rdy6gzy5oLook at these mealy mouth statements from the Democrats. Trump won because though Democrats had the factual and legal ground on most issues they treated it like an Oxford Debate. They need to get it together and soon. "The scope of what you are ordering is breathtaking, unprecedented, and will have devastating consequences across the country," the congresswomen wrote. "We write today to urge you in the strongest possible terms to uphold the law and the Constitution and ensure all federal resources are delivered in accordance with the law."
The Democratic minority leader of the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, was also critical of the pause: "Congress approved these investments and they are not optional; they are the law."

LordAdam16: Slap fines or not, farmers, factories (like meatpacking plants), restaurants still need cheap labor. H2-A visas were introduced to address farmers' needs. Between the onerous rules and fees, whatever labor a farmer would get via the program ain't gon be cheap. The labor sure as hell ain't convenient to acquire. What, with the filings and sh*t. The porous border and remote nature of farms make illegals a no-brainer. Keep that up over decades and it becomes "how things work". That's how you get to the point where taking out illegals from the equation f*cks up the financials of the entire operation. Inertia!
The farmer still has payments to make on their million dollar John Deere equipment and loans. They've got produce contracts to honor. The government allowed the issue to metastasize. So before punishing farmers, the feds have to reform the system. That reform will ultimately lead to the current reality except today's illegal alien farm workers will be tomorrow's legal nonimmigrant farm workers.
Netherlands, Germany, Israel all deal with the same issue. Israel flies in farmhands from Africa and Asia. The US has all the labor it needs at its doorstep. They only need to revamp the immigration system.
The US needs holistic immigration reform. But we're still in the "don't care about the deets, just get most of them out" stage.
-Lord Holistic like the The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 that Republicans killed or the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013 which Republicans again killed or the recent smaller bipartisan bill that Republicans again killed in 2024? No, you and the Republicans you champion everyday are in the "don't care about the deets" phase and partially because illegal immigration actually helps business interests which vote Republican (like farmers). |

cococandy: You’re right about this. Excellent point . I just booked a Mallorca resort vacation for summer. Worth over $5,000 & paid $0.00 because of points.
Still have hundreds of thousands of points (about 350k) left over in my Hilton account for future trips. And I alternate the same way with my Marriot and Hyatt accounts. What sense does it make pay that $5k for a resort stay when I can get it for 0.00 as long as I’m using my outstanding credit?
The credit system is there to serve the customer. It’s one of the benefits of living in advanced society. No need to pay cash and not get benefits for my cash. I understand that people get excited and overspend more than they earn and get into trouble so that’s why some people avoid credit.
1) Live within your income means 2) Earn cash, Pay with credit and pay off the credit before it’s due. 3)Never accumulate debt. 4)Accumulate and save up your points for future rewards, upgrades, free hotel stays, access to luxury lounges on your trips etc. Rinse and repeat.
I believe the gentleman you’re arguing with knows this too. He’s been in America too long to not know. Hopefully the ones who don’t know can’t get a tip or two. 🤷🏽♀️ Trip sounds dope. Was it a foodie resort? Interesting in how you find it. I learned about points when I was 27 and wish I had known earlier. It's was a big life/money hack. Flights were one of the biggest hacks. I have enough rewards/points spread out over various airlines that I can book flights early, whenever I get invited to an event. I can then make up my mind and cancel even the day of the flight without a penalty. If you can follow the rules you posted, it's worth more than worth it. |
