Programming / Larisoft Cleandesktop; The Untold Story Of How A Nigerian IT Firm Truly Led Tech by ijecks(f): 4:23pm On Jan 15, 2019
In september 2018, Apple released their new operating system; Mac OS Mojave. One of the flagship features of this OS was its ability to automatically clean the user’s desktop. Users hailed the release of this product, and apple boasted about it.

What they didnt know was that as early as 2016, larisoft ltd, then a fledgling startup in Enugu, Nigeria, had already released a piece of software that does exactly what Apple’s stacks does on windows and so larisoft ltd was clearly ahead of them innovation wise.

The larisoft version (clean desktop) has been on github since 2016, is open source, has gathered a lot of grateful users in the country and beyond over the years, and is available for download.The software comes in zipped format. All you need to do is extract it, double click setup.exe, and watch the magic happen.

Nigeria is getting there, right?

Programming / The Benefits Of Computer Programming by ijecks(f): 12:30pm On Jan 08, 2019
THE BENEFITS OF COMPUTER PROGRAMMING
Programming is a new kind of literacy, it is a skill that is not just essential for every young person out there, but also necessary if you really want to be efficient and more competent in this fast-changing world. Consider learning how to program because it is a great mental tool that feeds your imagination and makes sure they remain bent in reason and mastery.
Reasons to learn how to code:

1. It makes you a better problem solver: People love smart people or someone that knows how to solve problems, programming enables you to become very smart and if you are very smart and you don't talk about it but you use that smartness to solve problems that help people or make people's life better you would be loved by most people e.g. Mark Zuckerberg Bill Gates Dennis Ritchie and Evan Spiegel.

2. Programming helps you understand the world better: Want to understand how a car is built from scratch, or how a rocket ship is set to mars, or how logic is created tested and easily manipulated by smart aliens in disguises of humans like Dennis Ritchie and Linux Torvalds,just program and keep programming and one day you would be an alien that understand the word far better than most people think they do.

3.Programming helps you learn most things easily: If you want to be a fast learner, learn to program, bet me things most people complain that are hard would be very easy for you, when you eat up PHP algorithm and data structures in the morning, and then have breakfast with Vectors and Matrixes sometimes in the day and then take a cool rest with OOP whether it is in Java or in father C or even in PHP, you would not just learn things faster you would dangerous understand the little but very important things most people miss in life.

4. It makes you understand that talk never gets things done, only action does: Whether it is in investment, banking, school, energy or government. Programming makes you understand that even though you can talk to an extent, you must also do something no matter how small it is, doing is everything it justifies this lovable quote: "Talk is cheap, do let me see".

5. Finally, you would be financially free: You might not be very wealthy but trust me you would be well off that you can afford most things in life if you stay grounded at it.
Please let's all learn how to code because it is a force that we must all accept if we want to build a healthy future for ourselves and the next generation.

If you are already a master in programming or you want to learn but you don’t know where to start pay a visit now to Larisoft at 14b Hillview Street Independence Layout and trust me, you would never remain the same again.

Programming / How Not To Learn Programming by ijecks(f): 10:19am On Nov 29, 2018
Larisoft
We build software…

I am just someone who feels really lucky to be in this amazing industry and am still learning like most of us. But having passed the fledgling stages where some of our upcoming badoos currently are, I thought it wise to share common pitfalls they will …or are already facing which can stop them from learning to become programmers.

1. Wait till you find the perfect language:
If I was given a dollar for every time I heard someone say, larisoft, I want to learn programming, which language should I start with? I’d buy nairaland and redesign it (Tongue in cheek @seun). The problem is; the language really doesn’t matter most of the time. Every language you start with has something essential to teach you. While starting with a generally difficult language like C++ can be daunting and protracted for most people, it makes up for the delay by teaching you programming principles you will learn ‘years to come’ if you start with a higher-level language. On the other hand, starting higher up with a language like PHP hurries you to those ‘years to come’.

Pick a language…any language and start! There is no way you wont learn something that will guide you for the rest of your journey. If I may recommend I’d say, choose any amongst PHP, python, or javascript. But end that language search right now!!!
2. Start Coding without a project in mind:
Programming is not like academics where you are handed down theory and expected to regurgitate months later. It’s a practical field. You need to have something towards which you are coding. It could be a simple personal website, or an organizer, or a calculator, or an idea of an app you have which you’d be proud to share with friends.

Till date, I don’t know any badoo who learnt to code only by reading tutorials and repeating the examples in them. Maybe I will after this article. Roll up your sleeves and build something! I’d be happy to review any any app you share with me anyday.
3. Don’t ever try to solve a problem yourself:
This is one of the reasons why there are so very few female programmers. There are usually so many guys flocking around…trying to help!
Programming is not just about writing code that works. Its also about writing code that doesn’t work, understanding why it doesn’t work, and making it work. If you spend 4 hours figuring out why a script doesn’t work…yeah! That’s the spirit.
If even after staring at code for a long time, you don’t understand it; use google first before contacting someone you know. Not only will internet resources show you the ‘standard’ and ‘non standard’ way of doing things, they will also subconsciously teach you how to learn programming (i.e. how to follow tutorials)…and boy! Is there a lot of learning to do?
4. Start Making huge sums of money as soon as you can:
This is where a lot of people get it wrong. Mark Zuckerbarg is a billionaire today, but before he became that; he coded for at least 7 years. (Built stuff for his dentist father at age 14). Bill Gates had being coding for a long time before he started Microsoft. Without a donkey-years experienced programmer like Wozniac, apple would have kicked its pants no matter how much of a sales Genius Steve Jobs was.

If your major aim in learning to code is to make money FAST, consider saving yourself the trouble by getting a friend that will do the coding while you do the business. Better still, you could spend your time acquiring bogus certificates. Serious tech firms will reject you, but a lot of prejudiced firms will welcome you and pay you well. If however, you insist on making money from programming, you should know that nothing in programming happens FAST.

Let your efforts for the first 2 years be focused on gathering as much knowledge as you can. Am not saying you shouldn’t make money every now and then, but put your learning first and where both conflict, choose learning over money.

It is worthy of note to mention that about 4 years ago, you could come into the Nigerian tech landscape and become really super rich from building wordpress sites and crappy unscalable applications. Very few people knew tech then. Today, things are fast changing. WordPress sites are getting done for 15k and Nigerians expect your app to be fast, bug-free and elegant, just like all the international apps they are used to. The best gift you can give yourself right now is proficiency-not money. Money will come in tons later if you know your stuff.

5. Do not allocate too much time to coding everyday:
The truth is, once you start learning to code, your life should experience a paradigm shift. You should begin to have fewer friends…begin to appear in public less frequently. If you are doing it right, you should be spending so much time with your computer that sometimes, you realize the day has come and gone without you stepping out of your house. If you eventually drop out from school, or do something really socially awkward BECAUSE YOU JUST CANT STOP CODING …Halleleluyahh…the spirit is firmly planted in you and its only a matter of time.

If you are just starting to code and you are not spending up to 3hours a day coding…I am not an authority; but I have my doubts ooo.

Programming / Problem: Android Studio Error Cant Install Platform 27 Or Any Other Platform. by ijecks(f): 10:06am On Nov 29, 2018
Problem:
Android Studio Cant install platform 27 or any other platform build tools. Gradle build failed.
When you click the install option presented, it downloads but fails to install;
Solution:
This usually happens because android studio doesnt have the permission to modify some files in your SDK folder which must be locked and then unlocked for installation to take place.
To resolve this: run the command below to disable restricted access to your sdk path and all subdirectories, files.
chmod -R 777 /path/to/android sdk
*NOTE THAT THIS MEANS ANY USER ON your system INCLUDING guests can access ur sdk folder. Shouldn't be a problem though if ur home folder is still protected.

Programming / 6 Steps On How To Write Clean Codes by ijecks(f): 2:54pm On Nov 15, 2018
How to Write Clean code - Abuchi Mmaduabuchi

[Abuchi Mmaduabuchi is a software engineer at larisoft ltd with years of experience in product management, software development and software testing. He can be reached at abuchi@larisoft.com]

Writing clean code is so important in software development that not only does it help teams progress faster on projects, it is also a very good metric for determining who is and who isn't an experienced developer.

In this article we shall examine what factors constitute a clean code.

1. Variables and functions should be named meaningfully:
A well written function should say what it does in the name in the clearest manner possible. Even in situations where a meaningful name will be too long, it is still better to use hyphens or camelcase to convey what the function does.

There is no greater sin in coding than having variable and function names which convey no meaning whatsoever.

2. Functions should be short in length:
A well written function should not be longer than 7 lines. If its longer than 7 lines, you should seriously consider moving parts of the function to a different function. If after considering moving the parts and you still think there’s no way to reduce it; think again.

This is simply to enable other programmers understand your code without striving to remember what they read 20 lines ago.

3. Avoid convoluted Braces and code blocks
Code parts that involve braces should be not be 3 lines deep. You know you are writing bad code when you punch something like this into the keyboard

if(foo==bar){

if(arr == ss){

if(noo== no){

for(i = 0; i < 1; i++){

while(i < j){

}
}
}

}
}

Again, in pursuit of code readability, programmers who write code like this should be fired, or you know; shot and then fired.

4. Be careful with Comments:
Comments are a mixed bag which should be used very sparingly if ever at all. A properly written code doesn't usually need comments except in rare circumstances where the programmer is convinced that; shorten the length of the function as much as he can, name the variable as clearly and as long as he can, and eliminate braces all he can, what the code does is still not immediately clear to another programmer. Only then should comments be introduced.

Also, while making comments in code, you should favor explaining the meaning and type/return type of a variable or a function, instead of explaining what the function/variable does. This eases deconstructing your code.

5. Avoid Unnecessary, but fancy algorithms
An algorithm is simply the series of steps the computer takes to accomplish a task. These steps are usually set by you; the programmer. Now, because you usually think you are awesome, its very easy to start introducing recursions where a loop would do; or you know, invent and implement your own sorting algorithm while there are already several to choose from.

Your primary objective should be to write as very little code as possible that is as clear to read as possible, and which meets the specifications at play. Your fancy algorithms really usually deviate from these primary objectives.

6. Remove all dormant variables, functions
While programming, it is very common to introduce variables and functions solely for testing purposes (You should be using unit tests by the way, not doing this). But these variables should be removed as soon as they’ve served their purpose.

Sloppy programmers tend to leave this as part of their code. Especially debug statements which go on to slow down the system when deployed to production.

In summary, software development projects are a very complex activity which is prone to failure. Writing clean code greatly reduces this complexity and increases chances of success. Writing clean code of course encompasses much more than is written in this article. But the points above are good starting points.

Keep coding!

..its very ironical that Protestants are always attracted to men and women from the catholic church likewise catholics too but I've observed one thing some actually see it as conversion both from the catholics and protestants as well,there is this thrill of bringing a new person into the church with the mind that its conversion which is absolutely not .but if u are made for one another the marriage work out but your faith in Christ should never diminish.
