6. HYBRID BATTERY.
This is where many hybrid car owners get discouraged buying, or even contemplate selling their hybrid cars.
This is a DC battery with a combined nominal voltage in the hundreds. Though this varies from hybrid car brands and the vehicle type.
Refer to your car's manual for more info about the nominal voltage if your car.
This is the battery, with the real potential to electrocute, that powers your car's hybrid system(inverter/converter assembly, Ac system compressor, electric motors/generators, etc).
Any slight deviation from the car's standard voltage, would have negative impacts on your car, ranging from the car not starting, etc.
This type of batteries are different from the auxiliary battery, in such that their electrodes, are embedded in a highly conductive electrolyte(potassium hydroxide), in a well sealed battery pack.
They're save, environmentally friendly, and lasts more than the 12volt battery.

THE FIX: Don't park the car for more than a week, without driving it. If you won't be around for a long while, give it to a friend to help with cruising it in your absence **""""""""**********

Hi Joseph, good thread again. however, i would like to correct this general misconception about long parking a hybrid vehicle having an adverse effect on its hybrid battery.

Nimh, which is the widely used battery technology in most hybrid vehicles up until recently, have a characteristic of self discharge at about 0.1% per quarter. That means that without use, a block sitting at 16 volts, will likely be sitting at 14.4V at the end of 3 months, so will other modules/blocks in the same hybrid battery be if it is in a good shape. This is not a fault, its a characteristic of Nimh technology.

Consequently, if you long park your car for an extended time, say 4 weeks, and then you have a problem with the hybrid battery when you try to start the car afterwards, what has happened is that the rate of self discharge for some modules across the hybrid battery is higher that some others leading to a deviation in block (module pair) voltages which has been sensed by the battery ECU / Smart Unit thereby throwing the code. In such a situation, the hybrid battery has failed. Giving a friend to cruise the car or warm it does not FIX the condition but masks the issue for a later date.

What may be a better option for long storage will be to store the vehicle is a location where the hybrid battery is not exposed to high temperatures (like a shade) because self discharge rates are higher at higher temperatures. For instance, one can park the car and have it covered, if a prius, the tonneau cover must always be used to provide some shield to the hybrid battery pack.

I have had hybrid vehicles that have been parked for 3 - 6 weeks without any issues (no one warmed them).

I quite agree with every poster here, and have shared in the typical hybrid scare because of people's bitter experiences.

Long story short, hybrid vehicle are light years better than regular vehicles. To successfully use a hybrid vehicle, you must get the right information - no other way. Thats' why we started “Hybrid Vehicles Fundamentals Program” to equip users and would be users on hybrid vehicle ownership in Nigeria.

Hybrid vehicles by design, are meant to be low maintenance vehicles however people usually get it wrong during acquisition of these vehicles and must live with the consequences, but these could be avoided. For instance, i posted here a while ago in this thread a few of the pitfalls users ought to be aware of “https://www.nairaland.com/2392504/need-advice-2007-camry-hybrid#44119842

@TRYGO / Joseph nice to hear that the car is back on the road and doing 50MPG - that's pretty impressive.

Just curious, what sub code did you get with the P0A08 and what did you do to resolve it?

Yes, i understand the battery junction from your post above refers to the point of terminal connections to the system main relays 2 and 3. Prius does not have a battery smart unit as referred to in your pic (TCH does), you’re probably referring to the relays. The system main resistor is the white stuff that connects to the SMR2 (+ve side of frame wire).

Best of luck on your repairs and always practice safety!!

@TRYGO / Joseph nice piece. One of the easiest, and perhaps the most critical ways to keep your hybrid battery fit in Nigeria is to always use your air conditioner. The sweet spot setting will be between 75 to 78 d/f which will reduce the demand of the compressor on the hybrid battery but still effective enough to provide some cooling to reduce the cabin temperature. This will assist in reducing the temperature of the hybrid battery as temperature is the "biggest killer" of hybrid batteries in Nigeria and hybrid batteries cool only using cabin air.

You have P3000/123 written in the posted picture in your post, as you know, this code is set when the hybrid ECU receives an abnormal signal from the battery ECU. The fix for this code often requires changing the hybrid battery ECU and frame wire No 2 at the least. Should you be in the market for any of these hybrid system components, you can check on me.

@laudite, if you want to fix your existing hybrid battery then call me.

@diportivo. You can change the brake pad but first you need to disconnect the -ve terminal of the 12v auxillary battery or unplug the two ABS relays in the engine room fuse box, i prefer to perform both actions because it won't really cost you anything. The two processes puts you in safety ensuring that the brake actuator does not engage while you are around the vehicle with your key fob with you. Neglect these and you will like code an ABS DTC code. In addition, where possible bleed the brakes with a Toyota OEM scan tool.

Ok, i like this thread already, though a bit old!

I agree and disagree with some of the comments here.

There are a few pitfalls that you can avoid to have a good hybrid experience, this is basically based on my experience as a user, a repairer and interface with many other hybrid users in Nigeria (we have a whatsapp group>08037610395).

Hybrid vehicles have a fantastic technology, and easier to maintain but only if you have the right information. Hybrids are not for everybody!

A few tips based on simple knowledge of hybrid battery pack module count (common sense)
1.Camry hybrid is lovely, but note, it has 34 modules - more failure points
2 Avoid generation 1 Prius (01-03) hybrids in general, - those battery packs have done average of 13 years…38 modules - most failure points...(i see many ads on auctionexport with these G1's dirt cheap - run away!! )- you won't get the battery pack readily and require two g2 packs to retrofit it - costly.
3.Stick to G2/G3 Prius - 28 modules - less failure points..if you can, get a generation 3 (010-014), simple design, dashboard comes off like a lego in 5 minutes, engine is very compact and reachable. g3 has the ejector AC technology system (first of its kind).
4. Be willing to research
5. Invest in a scan tool
6. Get knowledgeable others
7. Don’t manage your A/C, use it always
8. Enjoy your car!

To change the brake pad on a hybrid do the following and you wont have any issues
1. Remove the 12 volts positive terminal,
2. Keep the key fob away from the car - the brake actuators will be initialized when it senses the fob
3. For extra protection remove the 2 ABS relays from the engine JB fuse box (fuse box under the hood)

Well what can one say, yes we all agree that the car is ruined and will never function the same, parts will continue to fail in turns since various systems are inadvertently put together with total disregard to systems interplay and OEM specifications.

A typical owner of such a vehicle will continue to patronize mechanics… they can be managed, coarsed, we know them, they know us, they speak the language we understand, we can dump our issues at them, get them to come pick the car from the office and return it after repairs - usual drill.

Generally, ill advice, bad workmanship, and lack of information i have seen, have driven one too many to make this kind of heinous 'conversion' decision. In addition, there is a thriving market for vehicle conversion in many Nigerian major cities. Conversion usually was from right hand drive to left hand drive, now the market is shifting to from hybrid to conventional fuel driven cars.

People who are proponents of the conversion industry will argue with you BLINDLY and profusely that converting a hybrid vehicle is all about changing a few components including the complete engine with A/C compressor, kick starter and alternator, introducing a gearbox etc i ahve had this argument time and time again, i guess familiarity with regular vehicles has led to a lot of misgivings.

On the flip side, in my experience fixing hybrid battery packs in Nigeria, i have heard many tales of people suffering under very bad workmanship. Mechanics and other ‘contractors’ taking customer hybrid battery packs when a block has gone week in a bid to repair them only to return them swollen and unusable from overcharge, or with other attendant issues….and this is only when the customer has spent good money mostly thousands of naira. People are desperate to get their cars back on the road and they make poor choices because even they don’t understand hybrid vehicle technology well enough to ask the right questions. For some after failing once or twice and lost money, they eventually come to our site and we try to break it down for them. Some decide they want a replacement battery pack or that they want us to fix their existing battery pack, others choose to count their loses and decide to explore a conversion option which will cost them even more but at least they understand alternator or kick starter better than battery blocks and system resistors - so to speak.

For such people, it is their car, it is their money and it is their decision, and you gotta respect that - can only advice!

People want resolution now, so for instance when i tell some one that i didn’t have a hybrid battery for them now at the moment, but that i could recondition theirs within 1 - 2 weeks, they seem to want it in 2 days instead. Its understandable, we are in the internet age and there are people who can do it in 2 days.

i know this thread has been a while but i have a few comments/question for you @matharaz,

What issue did you have with the car that led to replacement of cylinder gasket?

Did you scan the vehicle for any DTC codes at the time when the issue occurred?

Can you describe what the behavior of the car at the time was?

After the replacement of the top cylinder gasket, did the vehicle start at all, before starting to display “Check hybrid system”

If you continue to try and start the car, then you will run down the 12V battery as well as the HV battery.

As a way to troubleshoot, use a simple multimeter and read the voltage of the 12v battery, if its above 12.3 volts, then it still has some good juice in it. Should that be the case, your best play will be to put the car in ACC mode and use a scan tool (you can get a bluetooth scanner at the least) to scan the vehicle for any DTC codes. With such codes, then you will have a better idea of what hybrid system component may have failed.

Note that when you try to pull these codes with the car in ACC mode using a scanner, a lot of other communication error codes will be displayed, but what you want to look for are "hybrid system" related codes like failed hybrid battery or lost communication with hybrid component or wiring harness issues, you may disregard all other error codes displayed in the scanner at this point until the car can start. The hybrid system error is what is stopping the car from starting.

That said, based on the information you provided, it is possible that your initial trouble with the car may have been a
‘hybrid system” issue which could have been caused by a faulty sensor, HV battery or related component or short in wiring harness. I don’t know the level of troubleshooting that you did prior to going ahead to changing the cylinder gasket but the lesson here is to get a scanner so that you can have details of whats going on.

@Sienna just saw page 1 of this thread, what a lovely thread you started with good picture quality too. Indeed the informtion helps demystifies the prius inverter.
One of my prius is a 2010, though older, it has about the same 2ZR engine and system similar to the one in the post, there was a TSB issued for the recall/change of the intake manifold because of a knocking and rattling sound from startup….fortunately 2 years ago, when it happened to mine, cleaning the EGR system, Intake manifold and applying some HEET water remover seemed to do the trick and its been good since then.

An important point which i will like highlight from your post is safety, particularly around hybrid battery packs. High voltage which is present in High Voltage Hybrid Battery Packs are hazardous and could cause death or serious injury! Even when the service (orange) plug has been removed, care must still be taken around the battery because there could be a short to ground leading to some resultant voltage in the circuitry.

In my work experience fixing hybrid batteries, while removing a HV battery pack, how i check for lack of voltage on the battery to be removed is to check both leads to ground to verify no voltage present (if its not less than 1V then its not safe) as HV battery floats with respect to ground, this is in addition to checking between the positive and negative leads for total lack of voltage.

A case in point is a customer with a failed Dorman HV battery pack with 70+ volts registered between the -ve terminal to ground - without the service plug inserted.

[quote author=Opsaipro post=42428342]Hello,
On the 2004 accord hybrid, there's a big switch (behind the back seat) you can throw to disengage the inverter and batteries. It's basically a maintenance switch, but if your electrical drive components have a problem, you can throw the switch and drive the car as a gasoline.
Does the prius have such a function, of if the inverter/battery have a problem, the car is undriveable until it's fixed? Also, does the highlander hybrid have that function?

Nope, you cannot disengage the Toyota (Prius, Camry and Highlander) hybrid traction battery or inverter system to enable it function as a conventional vehicle.

If my limited knowledge in the IMA world serves me right, i know that in the Honda insight, disabling the IMA battery using this switch poses its own challenges like

Running the 12 volt battery down as the IMA system is supposed to charges the 12volts battery (so people who do this will usually have a trickle charge to frequently charge the 12v battery)

Acceleration response degradation as response will drop significantly as car is not using its full compliment

Strange observation. In New Delhi India, 80% of the cars and motor bikes driven/riden by Indians are made in India largely by three home grown automobile manufacturers (Maruti, Tata and Mahindra). As strange as thise vehicles look, they love them ...... government officials and institutions like police, customs all use them. You only find third party brands driven by a few diplomats and foreigners. That initiative alone keeps a sizable percentage of national income and jobs in the country.
Car Talk / Re: The Best Electric Cars On Sale. (PICTURES N SPECS) by ikefor(m): 3:15pm On Dec 29, 2015
I think the Model S is unique because of its over the air software updates that users can get straight into the car. The car is superior in its interior and exterior design and Elon is working hard to become the Steve Jobs of the Automobiles industry (just check out his new plant) and he is succeeding gradually with the recent launch of the Model X Car/SUV with adjustable flap doors.

However, there recently were series of software/hardware glitches that required that Tesla recall some model S's. But guess what? Tesla's does not use Dealerships in their supply chain, so instead Tesla technicians flew helicopters daily to client sites to effect modifications for their clients - cool but a tid expensive.!!!

Many of these cars are actually Nigeria ready today!
Now, i know that some people here in lagos have guaranted power supply (i dont have o) for certain times of the day and the car can be plugged to charge then (just remember - i don tire no dey else you wont go to work tomorrow or they go dey push u 4 3rd mianland).

Think about it, if your daily city commute comprises 20miles drive to victoria island for instance, that's 40miles both ways. An additional 20Miles for traffic conditions in between commute and another 20 miles for shopping and errands - that adds up to 80Miles. For some of the EV's, you will still have some juice left. If you have influence at your work location, you can also get a charging station installed there for about 250K and so you change at home and at work

On the flipside, regards to a global adoption of EV, some of the concerns include

1. The image problem - early adopted looked ugly which challenged Elon Musk with the Tesla
2. Lack of charging stations - Battery fever for longer commuters
3 Limited range - range also deteriorates with age
4. Required frequency of charge - always tethering the car to electricity already seems like some work
5. cost of charge if you pay for electricity
6. Government favorable regulations - In Nigeria govt incentive to reduce tariff on hybrid cars can reduce green house gasses dramatically and alleviate the fuel lines at the filling stations.

IMHO i will prefer a plugin hybrid, gives me the best of both worlds - the ICE and hybrid system.

Cc: Everybody Please

I know this is a bit old but what did you do about this car?

You might be in luck, usually it is the 12v battery just just borrow one from a car and jumpstart from the terminal in the relay box up front.
You have to be careful jumping from the front, your Prius has no protection from you reversing the cables and doing N200K worth of damage. I know this sounds dramatic, but the cost of getting it wrong can be very high apart from the inconvenience. Better jump from the trunk were you can see the terminal indications.
If you have to jump from the front then I'd just be super careful to get it right: positive cable to positive (aka: red, plus symbol + in the relay box), negative to ground (bare metal on engine, bare bolt or bracket on body).

2 years to leave a hybrid undriven is long, however if the traction battery's state of charge SOC was high when it was last parked ... say 70%, then you may have a chance of it getting started with the jumpstart, else you may have to charge the traction battery pack.

i have a charging solution that can get the car back in 24 hours assuming there is nothing else wrong with the car. You have to change the auxillary 12v battery in any case. you can pm me.

the hybrid system contains very high voltage which is lethal if not handled professionally with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.

I absolutely agree here with you. The generation 2 (2004 - 2009) Prius traction battery delivers a nominal voltage of 201.6 VDC and a peak voltage of 240VDC and can cause some serious shock to an individual. There are cases of shocks even when IP uses gloves that are not properly rated to handle such high voltages.

DO NOT take your Hybrid Toyota vehicle to any unqualified uncertified Toyota Hybrid repair professional.

I partly agree to this. What tends to happen in the hybrid community is that you usually have users who are enthusiasts and DIYers who by virtue of experiences, researches and interactions have developed a little body of knowledge with diagnostics and repairs and can provide solutions to simple to difficult hybrid issues. In addition, Toyota by virtue of its Technical Information Services TIS - a subscription based service - has made its repair manuals available online. The TIS is a huge body of knowledge that encompasses all you can think of in Toyota repairs. Unfortunately, you have to pay 15 usd for a 2 day access. So what people, including myself do, is have all the components and DTC codes that we need resolution on, make the payment and download everything that is related to and is required for offline access. That said, the best form of assistance you can get is getting to understand your vehicle more yourself.

IMHO the Prius still has one of the best engine designs of this decade.

BTW, I am part of a whatapp community of hybrid users (TCH/Prius/HiHy/IMA) who share general information, ideas and offer each other assistance on hybrid technology. The group members consists of hybrids users across Nigeria (Abuja, Yobe, Zaria etc) who are like you and did not have a clue about what an MG1/MG2 means and there are a few others who are senior professionals and DIYers and have jumped the ropes and seen some. At the moment, the group has grown significantly (not giving numbers), if you are a hybrid USER (not seller) and are interested in joining this group, you can PM me.

@Jadakiss, these are very relevant questions that @sienna has asked you but you haven't provided any answer yet...many times i find that hybrid users are at lost with what is wrong with their car, often highlighting the symptoms of the car without any DTC code information. The truth is that you could do that for a regular car based on previous experiences, but you may actually cause some additional problems diagnosing a hybrid in that fashion.

That said, i encourage anybody buying a hybrid vehicle to at least get a minimum obd2 scanner, there are many that cost as little as N5k. It is often the best place to start learning and understanding your hybrid vehicle.

@Sultan, yes you can run the car when the fuel is out for a short time before the hybrid battery will eventually run down. As this stresses the battery beyond the 40-80% SOC threshold set by the hybrid HV ECU, it will ultimately lead to one or more blocks becoming weak. When one battery block in the Hybrid battery becomes weak, and a DTC code is set, you will have all kinds of attendant performance and drive-ability issues. If one continues to drive the car, usually for about a month of so, the car will pack up and no longer drive (prius) or drive and intermittently stop (Camry hybird) and the extend of damage to the battery enhanced until the battery is reconditioned or replaced.

Sorting out a HV battery issue quicker can be cheaper than when persistent drive-ability issues have emerged from extended driving with a weak battery block because the heat or sometimes leakage from the bad block will affect other blocks in the battery bank.

The hybrid battery can last for as much as 400k miles but there has been instances of failure below 200k, depending on usage, there are certain things you can do to improve the odds for extended HV battery life, but to keep things short, i would say the most important is to always use your AC.
