Most of these sales girls are dependants, most of their needs especially accomodation, feeding even in most cases the transportation fare are provided by a guardian such as their uncle, Auntie, parents, senior brother or senior sister

That was how this regime mischievously used these demographic such as salesgirls to erroneously recalculate the unemployment rate from 40% to 5%.
You keep talking about only the sales girls because you are trying so hard to deny the obvious truth. Why are you not talking about parents who work as teachers in government primary schools? Or, can't you see that I mentioned them in the question?

do you know what sales girls do to augment salary?
Sales girls are not the only ones I mentioned in the question. I mentioned primary school teachers who are mothers and fathers with children and pay house rent while earning less than 70,000 monthly. If your plan is to tell me that sales girls have sugar daddies who pay the girls' bills, what about sales boys and boys who work as cleaners or guards?

So, answer my question.
And the job say mentioned above better than lecturers jobs?
Answer the question or admit that things are twisted and exaggerated in the news.

Don't you think you are being silly at this point? How many salesgirls are married with children and can afford to take adequate care of their children? Now compare that to a university Prof who has children, at least two and MUST take care of them, at least give them the basics. Ask yourself in all honesty. How much 400,000k can go to take care of a family of 4 without cutting cost? Take into consideration that less than 15% of lecturers are professors. The rest are lower cadre ranging from Assistant lecturer to Reader (Associate Professor). In case you don't know, the Assistant lecturer earns 120k per month. Do you think that is enough for one to take care of oneself not to talk less of a family bearing in mind the increased price of food, fuel and accomodation?
You are obviously the silly one here. Many low-level civil servants in local government secretariats and many teachers in government primary schools have families and pay house rents while earning less than 50,000 monthly. Are these jobs better than being a lecturer? Answer this question or admit that things are exaggerated in the news and you are the silly one here.

You see, you said sister (still single? Or probably married?) okay why not brother with a family, when the gender coin is flipped? because there is difference and it is not sustainable!

I dunno what you guys are trying to justify, you don't realise just how terrible the situation is, maybe you are living in a glass house.

Heck, peeps can no longer move about because they can no longer afford transportation cost/due to the huge cost of transportation, and some people are still clapping for the govt of the day. It is really absurd.

For A country that has huge oil and gas resources
Many married people got the same job with her 2 years ago. They earn the same amount and still transport themselves to work. The hardship is real and has reduced people's standard of living. The point is, has the hardship gotten so bad that lecturers cannot transport themselves to work? If yes, it means that being a primary school teacher or working in a local government secretariats is better than being a lecturer. So, is working in a local government secretariat or being a newly-employed primary school teacher better than being a lecturer? Answer this question or admit that things are exaggerated in the news.

You seem to forget that these lecturers have families with children going to fairly good schools. A lecturer won't stand and watch their children in public schools, neither would they accept glorified private schools. At best they'll choose to put them with the university's school and as much as they get discounts it's not free.

I'm not sure about other states but the lecturers I know in lagos who are complaining, maybe not sleeping in the office but reducing in office days all come from as far as ikorodu and Ojo. I even know one who's home is Ogun state the side closer to lagos. On average these people will be on the road 3 hours on a round trip especially with hold up and bad roads. With transportation costs reaching well into 5 or 6k for a round trip.

You mention civil servants and sales girls, many of them live a lower quality of life, many purposely squat or take unsightly accommodations because they are cheaper and closer. An educated lecturer won't take a partially dilapidated house. With exposure comes some level of class and sophistication. When comparing remember to take into consideration lifestyle. A sales girls meal choices will greatly differ from a lecturer because a lecturer probably know better about healthy living. A sales girl will most likely be okay wearing third grade a lecturer won't. They might not wear turkey but quality US or even Vietnam. A sales girl will choose local herbal treatment ir over the counter self Med but a professor knows better. As I said exposure equals a higher living standard. Don't also forget many sales girls also get tips same with civil servants and even from just physical comparison you'll tell that a lecturer is living a different life that a sales girl.

The article also mentioned the cost of publishing and running researches also takes a toll on them. We also have to consider that many lecturers spend heavily on training their kids because they know the importance.

Also many sales girls will choose semi public schools for those who don't want to send their children to public schools. Many also live in family houses or with others helping to cut down the cost.

Whatever the case maybe if truly lecturers only make about 500k then it's pathetic. Fir a profession this important 1 million monthly should be the average excluding other benefits. If we want to be frank 400k monthly in this economy can only do so much for you. You'll still be very much on the struggling side. Landlords are making cost of living ridiculous and feeding is yet another bill.

Someone also mentioned there is nothing wrong with public transport bit you forget most lecturers carry materials around, research papers, laptops etc. Jumping from one transport to another is a lot of work. There is no one bus or public transport that can take them right to the school gate. After struggling for transport as is synonymous to Nigeria they'll most likely already be exhausted. Do you expect them to do this everyday when on campus accommodation isn't being offered?

From your own perspective as a worker how comfortable would you be with 400k as a monthly salary much less for men and women who have dedicated time and effort to research and study for the good of the future generation.

The world truly under appreciates those who matter and hails and enriches those who can't be of help if push comes to shove.
You are dodging the truth here. I never denied the hardship. The hardship must have in many ways reduced the lecturers' standard of living. But has it gotten so bad that the lecturers sleep in their offices primarily because of transportation cost? If low-level civil servants in local government secretariats, who have families and pay house rent, still transport themselves to work everyday, how come lecturers are now the ones that are unable to transport themselves to work? Is the local government job better than the jobs of the lecturers? Answer this very question or admit that things are exaggerated in the news.

Thank you. You have really taken good time and effort to respond to this man - @immortalcrown who has annoyingly insisted on asking what can be regarded as ridiculous questions.

Even as at 2018, most of the security guards in my office at Lekki earning less than 60k monthly at the time, use to arrange to work straight for one or 2 weeks (sleeping in the office) without going off duty because they can't afford the daily commute to/fro their homes. You can imagine what the situation would be at the moment!

Most of the lowly paid workers who work far away from their home have simply stopped working, or taken to squaring with friends who have houses in the neighbourhood of their work places.

However, in the majority of cases, sales girls and similar low cadre workers usually stick to working not too far away from where they live. Many people are living so poorly, just managing to stay alive, and unless some of them start dropping dead, some funny people would still be saying "at least they go to work", so it means they are OK.

Despite the current proliferation of private universities, they are still not easily found in all locations. Many lecturers have to be commuting long distance in order to report for work daily.

For instance, many people working in UNILAG live far away, even in Ogun State. And if you consider a salary of less that 500k on the average for most Professors, who must have spend over 20-25years lecturing after their first degrees, what of other junior lecturers who may even be mature, but recently diverted to academic just completing PhDs in their late 40s and 50s. They even earn much lower, yet have family responsibilities.

Remember they labour to have PhD, and many even have multiple other degrees and professional qualifications since not all of them venture directly into academics from the start. The salary is just too low. At this stage, many have children in the universities themselves and also cater for larger extended family problems.

I wonder how much @immortalcrown earns that he thinks lecturing work is currently lucrative and salary of less than 500k is not a poor compensation for a professor who is at the peak of the academic career in the current depressed economy.
Why are you dodging my question? Are the jobs of sales girls and cleaners better than the jobs of lecturers?

This topic is not about people's responsibilities at home. This topic is not about whether lecturers have more responsibilities than cleaners. This topic is about the salaries workers earn. If what cleaners earn can transport the cleaners to their workplaces, how come lecturers are the ones whose salaries cannot transport them to work places? If you get a job and choose to leave in a place that is very far from your workplace, blame yourself not your salary. If you are a lecturer in Lagos and choose to live in Abuja to be flying from Abuja to Lagos every morning and your salary is unable to sponsor that kind of trip, blame your choice of accommodation not your salary. Low low-level local government employees have children and pay house rent and still transport themselves to work. How come lecturers are the ones sleeping in their offices because of transportation cost? Are those other jobs better than the jobs of the lecturers? Answers this question.

You will not understand, that is why I said even if I explained the details to you, you will still doubt it... I will give you one last answer concerning what you asked now ... Everyone has different level of responsibilities and financial commitments.. nice chatting with you...
You are twisting things here. The news implies that what the lecturers earn is not enough to transport the lecturers to work. The news does not explain that the lecturers' responsibilities at home are the reasons they cannot afford to transport themselves to work. Someone earning 5 million naira per month may not be able to feed well because he or she has so many responsibilities. Someone earning less than 100,000 per month may be able to feed well because he or she has less responsibilities. The news is not talking about responsibilities at homes. The news is talking about the purchasing power of lecturers' salaries. If sales girls can afford transport to their work places, how come lecturers are the ones that cannot afford transport to their offices? It is either the jobs of the sales girls are better than the jobs of the lecturers or things are exaggerated in the news.

The economy is very bad. However, sales girls guards, cleaners and even civil servants that work in local government secretariats still afford transport to their workplaces. If they can afford transport to and from their work places, how come lecturers are the ones sleeping in offices because of transportation cost? It is either those other jobs are better than the lecturers' jobs or things are exaggerated in this news.

Many fathers and mothers who pay rents, feed children and pay children's school fees work as gardeners and porters in the same universities without sleeping in the universities because of transportation cost. I'm not denying the fact that the economy is very bad for everyone. My point is that the exaggeration in the news is too much. If these porters and gardeners don't sleep in the universities because of transportation cost, why are the lecturers the ones that can't cope without sleeping in their offices in the universities? Do the porters and gardeners earn higher than the lecturers do?

The hardship is real and has reduced everyone's standard of living. But let's not deny the exaggeration and false narrative in this post. If you are a lecturer in Lagos and you choose to live in Abuja with the plan to fly to Lagos every morning but your salary cannot sponsor such trips, blame whatever compelled you to live in Abuja, don't blame your salary. If the claim is just that many lecturers have suspended their post graduate programs and use public transport to workplaces, I will not argue. But saying that some lecturers sleep in their offices primarily because of transportation cost seems to be an exaggeration.

Many people who live outside Lagos but work in Lagos claim they do so because of accommodation cost in Lagos. But many of those people earn more than many employees that work and live in Lagos. If someone that works in Lagos earns less money and lives in the same Lagos and another person that works and earns more in the same Lagos lives outside Lagos, is it not obvious that salary is not the key reason why some people who work in Lagos choose to leave outside Lagos? Or, are these lecturers trying to claim that every employee that works and lives in Lagos earns more than what every employee that works in Lagos and leaves outside Lagos earns?

I am neither a supporter nor a defender of Tinubu. My signature is enough proof. But I stand by the truth. I don't accept unconfirmed rumours, even if the rumours go against someone I do not like.

Are we really sure that some lecturers sleep in their offices primarily to cut transportation cost? Or, is this just an exaggeration? If it is a case of lecturers living outside the states of the universities and cannot afford hotels, the record should be put straight.

There is a part in the post where a professor claims that he is not aware of any of his colleagues sleeping in offices. Notice that only the ASUU chairman claims that some lecturers sleep in their offices, and he doesn't provide any evidence.

Until any lecturer comes out to say that he or she sleeps in his or her office primarily to cut transportation cost, I don't believe this report. The ones who trek to the schools should tell us how many minutes they trek. I'm not doubting the hardship. But I hate exaggerations. So, I want evidence.

Anyways, some professors in these institutions participate in rigging elections.
