Car Talk › Re: Excessive Fuel Consumption (TOYOTA CAMRY 08 I4) by Inception(m): 11:30am On Feb 07, 2020 |
Mynewdawn15: Good Afternoon All.
Please my car has been seriously consuming fuel. I bought it as a Nigerian used January 2019, when I bought the car, the thermostat has been removed with the fan connected direct, AC also converted to manual compressor.
I reverse the fan connection to factory setting, bought thermostat and everything has been working fine, after 5 months the AC compressor got burnt (the excuse of the technician then was that since my fan is not connected direct the manual compressor can retain heat reason why it got burnt), got a poeguet 406 compressor, after some months it started leaking and eventually got burnt.
Changed AC technician, the new guy bought big daddy compressor, changed condenser and Evaporator also recommended that I connect the fan direct else the compressor will get burnt again. After that my AC has been working fine but my car consumes fuel like mad. The fan is running direct with my thermostat still intact. No check engine light, I already scanned it no error code. Spark Plugs are burning fine. Ltft is - 25% while STFT is between 3.5% and - 1.6%
Kindly help on what to do to reduce the fuel consumption.
Won't the compressor burn again if I return the fan to factory setup?
Car is Toyota camry 2008 I4.

Thanks With this, it will take forever for your car to get to closed loop. your car ECU is being tricked that the engine is running too cold, hence it is simply dumping fuel into your engine combustion chambers in perpetuity to ensure your engine has warmed up. With this kind of condition, your idle speed will be quite high. the LTFT of -25% is an indication that your engine is running rich. start by reverting all connections to factory settings, installing your thermostat to get your engine back to operating specifications. Then we can talk of how your AC can work without being burnt out. Your 2008 toyota camry is not a 1982 Peugeot 504. |

Emman8: Last year August I bought AC compressor and condenser for honda accord 2003 v6, AC technician did flushing, setup and gas refill and everything was working fine for 2 months, until one afternoon I noticed smoke coming out of the hood, i quickly park to check i noticed the AC compressor was making grinding noise and smoking, i turned it off and took the car to AC technician. I was told I have to change Compressor and Condenser again in which I did again, now same thing happen like 2 months after again, please what could be wrong? No sign of any leaks You need a complete overhaul of your AC system. High/low pressure lines, Evaporator, Condenser( i think this should come with an inbuilt drier), Compressor. All should be bought brand new (If you can get grade 1 Toks compressor, fine) |

9icetoo: I do not claim to know how the injectors work but my lay man understanding is this. Pressure is fixed. Volume injected is dependent on the length of time the injector stays open which is determined by the ecu . The ecu monitors the efficiency of its actions by monitoring the air flow meter reading, the air fuel ratio meter readings while factoring in other variables like temperature, load, etc. Does the injector have levels of opening like on a scale of 1-10 governed by the ecu? Cos I would like to think this is the only way a resistor can affect the volume of fuel injected by limiting the voltage flowing to the injector causing it not to open fully and reducing the quantity of fuel injected.
To the best of my knowledge (my knowledge which may not be correct), the injector is a on or off device. It's either open or close. It doesn't have levels of opening like say a flow control valve.
If that is true, then I struggle to understand how a resistor is going to achieve the fuel saving being discussed.
Following.
I'd like to see a picture of the setup by the way. It is PWM (pulse width modulated) |

There's no one that can do business with you for the first time and patronize you again, because you only have them drained to the last breath.
Everybody that I know has never given you Job the second time, because you always mess up big time.
The same thing you did to my brother last year, you collected money and never do anything for over 33 days. You'll collect money and used it for your personal things and start lying about server down, until we started threatening you before you released the vehicle within 48 hours.
Aberyomi called you out too over his client's car, you started lying that you didn't see the car at the port for days, it took another person just few hours to locate the said car. At the long run that car spent 6 weeks or so before you acted and until you were called out before you did the work you're paid to do.
Despite the fact you're well known on Nairaland, a lot of people can never give you work to do after the first one, only the ones that didn't know you're wicked and heartless that'll give you work to do. And I bet it, such ones can never try it the second time. I'm sure aberyomi has parted with you and also Aywhy
I'm personally affected with this container Amdman called you out on, and the moment I found out some weeks ago that you're the clearing agent... The first thing I said to myself and family is "We are in trouble" Jisos

Add more as you remember
The nozzle pulse width ( degree of opening and closing) works with information obtained from the MAP/MAF sensors, throttle position sensor, coolant temperature sensor etc to assure a stoicometric ratio of 14.7(air) to 1(fuel), usually with a specified range of values (perfect region between 0% to 20%). This range of values helps to cater for differing levels of engine load therefore assuring that vehicle operates optimally in virtually any condition as designed. Using a resistor to reduce the quantity of fuel is pure nonsense in that it only consider only one aspect of what makes your engine run properly. it in a way messes up the calibrations programmed in the ECU and in such engine may never provide the necessary power output required to move its weight around. I would not be surprised to see a system too lean or system too rich condition and misfire codes if i ever happen to scan such a car.In order words the ECU will always try to compensate, and when that reaches a threshold, reduced power will always result to avoid damage to the engine. And you car will be annoyingly sluggish. The only way to consider the total picture in improving mileage if one wants to follow that route is to calibrate the ECU. Or buy a Corolla. |

Inception: None sir. No codes at all. I have drained and refilled twice with WS . same issue( 2-3 shift flare, 4-5 shift flare for the first 10-15 minutes of driving). After it has warmed up, flare goes away. But then I experience harsh engagement into reverse from neutral to reverse, and P to R. Harsh downshifts ( particularly 5-4), 3-2, 2-1.
Note that when fluid was replaced the first time, fluid was dark( but not burnt), but did not notice any shiny metallic particles in the pan ( except the magnet particles of course). Filter was changed.
I understand the valvebody operation is PWM( pulse width modulated) which over time causes valvebody wear in the main pressure valve bore.
Now, the dilemma : Replace valvebody with a brand new unit, or replace Tranny? Cc. Kashif |
