INTRODUCTION
Disaster risk within a country has its roots in development decisions that do not adequately address disaster concerns, and the resulting disasters are coming at the cost of development and poverty reduction. By not considering disaster risk in development planning, new risks could be unintentionally created or existing ones exacerbated through investments in infrastructure and public services, and through improper planning and regulation.
Thus it is essential that the process of development planning identifies and analyzes the underlying causes of risk, and factors in measures for risk reduction. By mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into national development processes, disaster risk considerations can be made an integral part of development processes, especially in priority sectors such as agriculture, education, health, housing and roads.
This course has been developed to enhance the capacity of government officials, development partners and stakeholders involved in development planning to mainstream disaster risk reduction into development activities and practices.

The virus is spread through contact with the blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, rectal fluids, vaginal fluids, or breast milk of a person infected with HIV. The virus also spread mainly by having anal or vaginal sex or sharing drug injection equipment with a person infected with HIV.
HIV/AIDS remains one of the world's most significant public health challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. INTRODUCTION
OpenHDS is an open source Android tablet application that enables community field workers to collect births, deaths, migrations, pregnancies, deliveries, immunization and other pertinent health information. Field workers can collect data "offline" and upload data to the OpenHDS server when they have mobile connectivity. Health program administrators and policy makers can thus have real time access to health and demographic information in the community. The web-enabled, tablet-based OpenHDS application allows users to efficiently select previously registered individuals and launch various OpenDataKit (ODK) forms to collect additional demographic, morbidity, and service delivery information. The mobile application facilitates the collection, through household interviews, of many health events that occur in the community (or outside the formal health system). Even with a relatively small target population, accurate and statistically significant health and demographic rates can be computed when health events are combined with ongoing population demographic information. In addition to computing demographic data, health administrators and researchers are able to assess health system utilization and the burden of disease for a given population over time.
The OpenHDS also maintains a consistent record of significant demographic events that occur to a population in a fixed geographic region and generates up to date registration books. This course focuses on installation, use and management of openHDS. The concepts presented are reinforced with practical exercises at the end of each section. We also provide additional exercises and materials at the end of each module and access to our experts for any further questions.

INTRODUCTION
Health outcomes are quite low across much of the developing world, and the persistence of deep inequities in health status is a problem from which no country in the world is exempt. At the centre of this humanitarian crisis is a failure of health systems. Much of the burden of disease can be prevented or cured with known, affordable technologies. The problem is getting drugs, vaccines, information and other forms of prevention, care or treatment – on time, reliably, in sufficient quantity and at a reasonable cost – to those who need them. In too many countries the systems needed to do this are on the point of collapse or are accessible only to particular groups in the population. Failing or inadequate health systems are one of the main obstacles to scaling-up interventions to make the achievement of internationally agreed goals such as the MDGs a realistic prospect.
The growing urge to improve health care systems increases the urgency of this course that builds and strengthens the capacity of health worker, policy and decision makers in the health service sectors with an aim to achieve better health outcomes.

INTRODUCTION

Irrigation can be used to produce outcomes in terms of crop production. Irrigation schemes may also have other outcomes. It is now playing a more important role in agriculture than ever before. However, depending on the climate, the value of the plants or animals, the value of the land and its suitability for irrigation, the cost, reliability and quality of the water supply, irrigation may or may not be possible or feasible.
Irrigation may enable plants (i.e. crops, pasture) to be grown in a dry climate where it would not otherwise be possible, or it may supplement the existing rainfall and improve growth rates by extending the growth period of the plant, or by ensuring there is adequate moisture during critical periods when the plant is growing most rapidly. The value of irrigation can vary greatly from year to year depending on the distribution of rainfall during the growth season. This training course therefore is intended to guide the participants on developing and maintaining sustainable irrigation systems.

INTRODUCTION

Given the escalating population growth, intensified cropping, widespread land degradation and shrinking agricultural land, sustaining agricultural production through improved soil management is critical to the issue of food security and poverty alleviation in developing countries.
Limited availability of additional land for crop production along with declining yield growth for major food crops have heightened concerns about agriculture's ability to feed the world population. Much currently cultivated land is being lost through soil erosion, nutrient depletion, desertification, deforestation, and salinization or overgrazing. As agricultural areas become even more crowded, arable land is likely to come under increasing pressure. This also sets the livelihoods of millions of subsistence farmers at risk.
Integrated soil health and fertility management (ISHFM) is the key in raising productivity levels while maintaining the natural resource base. This training course aims to guide participants on how to replenish soil nutrient pools, maximize on-farm recycling of nutrients, and reduce nutrient losses to the environment and improving the efficiency of external inputs.

DURATION
5 days.

INTRODUCTION
With growing emphasis on participatory approaches towards development, there has been recognition that monitoring and evaluation (M&E) should also be participatory. Conventionally, M&E has involved outside experts coming in to measure performance against pre-set indicators, using standardized procedures and tools. In contrast, participatory monitoring and evaluation (PM&E) involves primary stakeholders as active participants and offers new ways of assessing and learning from change that are more inclusive, and reflects the perspectives and aspirations of those most directly affected.
This course is intended to broaden participants’ understanding of participatory monitoring and evaluation (PM&E) as a support to program/project management at different levels and as a tool for strengthening participation, enhancing local capacity, and increasing local people’s confidence and control over development decisions and processes. The course examines PM&E concepts and principles, as well as methods, tools and techniques, which have been tested and used in the field.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The course is intended for planning, monitoring and evaluation officers, program officers, project managers, research/action research officers, trainer/extension workers, community animators/facilitators and advocacy workers, with at least 2 years direct experience in either planning, implementing or managing monitoring and evaluation activities. Participants are requested

INTRODUCTION

The rapidly growing demand for livestock products worldwide is brought about by human population pressure, growing income and urbanization. Land use and human population pressures are leading to intensification and expansion in many livestock production systems. In addition, expansion of cropping into drier areas is forcing pastoral livestock production systems to relocate into still more arid lands. As a result of these changes new pressures on the environment are developing or could emerge and, therefore, should be of concern.
Livestock make an important contribution to most economies. It produce food, provide security, enhance crop production, generate cash incomes for rural and urban populations, provide fuel and transport, and produce value added goods which can have multiplier effects and create a need for services. Furthermore, livestock diversify production and income, provide year-round employment, and spread risk. Livestock also form a major capital reserve of farming households. This training course is designed to provide a guideline to participants’ in small scale livestock production and management as a source of livelihoods.

INTRODUCTION

In 2016, the world launched the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development Goals which is a set of 17 Global Goals to succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These Goals include Goal 1 and 2; that focus on ending poverty and hunger respectively among others. Despite the existence of global agendas and frameworks to reduce poverty and end hunger, the world still experience acute hunger and poverty. For instance, according to the United Nations report of June 2017, the world population stood at 7.5 billion out of which one of nine people did not have enough to eat.
While increased agricultural production is essential in improving food security status of households and the nation, it is not sufficient to reduce hunger and poverty. The best approach would be to promote the entire agricultural value chain through collaborative efforts among the state and the non state actors. These actors include donors, banks, civil society organizations, private sector, religious groups, and agricultural associations among other groups. The formation of collaborations can be informed by studying the entire chain, identifying opportunities and constraints as well assessing the need for Business Development Services (BDSs) that can help smallholder farmers improve enterprise(s) performance. These BDSs include input, advisory services, market information/communication through ICT, business management, legal services, financial services, transport services, insurance, farm implements (tools and equipment), gathering and storage and value addition.

INTRODUCTION
New developments in data science offer a tremendous opportunity to improve decision-making. In the development world, there has been an increase in the number of data gathering initiative such as baseline surveys, Socio-Economic Surveys, Demographic and Health Surveys, Nutrition Surveys, Food Security Surveys, Program Evaluation Surveys, Employees, customers and vendor satisfaction surveys, and opinion polls among others, all intended to provide data for decision making.
It is essential that these efforts go beyond merely generating new insights from data but also to systematically enhance individual human judgment in real development contexts.
How can organizations better manage the process of converting the potential of data science to real development outcomes? How can organizations go beyond merely generating new insights into changing behaviors — not only of their employees but beneficiary and communities too?
This five days hands-on course is tailored to put all these important considerations into perspective.
