INTRODUCTION
Irrigation can be used to produce outcomes in terms of crop production. Irrigation schemes may also have other outcomes. It is now playing a more important role in agriculture than ever before. However, depending on the climate, the value of the plants or animals, the value of the land and it's suitability for irrigation, the cost, reliability and quality of the water supply, irrigation may or may not be possible or feasible.
Irrigation may enable plants (i.e. crops, pasture) to be grown in a dry climate where it would not otherwise be possible, or it may supplement the existing rainfall and improve growth rates by extending the growth period of the plant, or by ensuring there is adequate moisture during critical periods when the plant is growing most rapidly. The value of irrigation can vary greatly from year to year depending on the distribution of rainfall during the growth season. This training course therefore is intended to guide the participants on developing and maintaining sustainable irrigation systems.

DURATION
5 days

INTRODUCTION
There is increasing demand from multilateral agencies, funding bodies as well as boards of private companies for a strong demonstration that projects are being monitored and evaluated effectively.
Effective project monitoring allows a project team to make appropriate decisions on a day-to-day basis and ensures that projects are carried out as planned and modified when necessary.
Successful programs and projects begin from a pre-planned series of activities and events. However, things rarely work out exactly as planned. INTRODUCTION
The majority of the rural poor rely heavily on their local environments to provide basic necessities like water, food and energy. These vital resources provide the backbone of many rural livelihoods and their stability is key to securing the well-being of their entire communities.
Disasters and food insecurity are directly interconnected. They interrupt market access, trade and food supply, reduce income, deplete savings and erode livelihoods. Drought, plant pests and diseases, animal diseases and food contamination have a direct economic impact by reducing farm production, by adversely affecting prices, trade, and market access and by decreasing farm income and employment. Economic crises such as soaring food prices reduce real income, force the poor to sell their assets, decrease food consumption, and reduce their dietary diversity and access to safe and quality food. Disasters create poverty traps that increase the prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition.
Disaster risk reduction is about protecting people’s livelihoods from shocks, and strengthening their capacity to absorb the impact of, and recover from, disruptive events. It is a necessary ingredient for food and nutrition security. Furthermore, it also creates a multiplier effect that accelerates the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal 1: the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger.

INTRODUCTION
Despite all efforts undertaken both nationally and internationally, poor nutritional status is still a fundamental cause of most non-communicable diseases and shortened life-span. The nutritional assessment and survey is done to obtain information about the prevalence and geographic distribution of nutritional disorders within a community or a specified population group. It can also be used to identify high-risk groups and to assess the role of different epidemiological factors in nutritional deficiency.
There are mainly two software programs used in nutrition assessments and surveys; ENA and EpiInfo. ENA analytical program has automated functions for sample size calculations, sample selection, quality checks, standardization for anthropometry measurements, and report generation with automatic analyses. It facilitates survey planning, data collection, analysis and reporting with the ability to generate automatic standard tables and graphs for anthropometric indices and plausibility check reports. On the other hand EpiInfo contains a module for making questionnaires and has much more sophisticated statistical functions. The software’s can also be combined to ENA/EpiInfo software which combines the advantages of both systems.

INTRODUCTION
Food loss and waste have many negative economic and environmental impacts. Economically, they represent a wasted investment that can reduce farmers’ incomes and increase consumers’ expenses. Environmentally, food loss and waste inflict a host of impacts, including unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions and inefficiently used water and land, which in turn can lead to diminished natural ecosystems and the services they provide.
While the number of food insecure population remains unacceptably high, massive quantities of food are lost due to spoilage and infestations on the journey to consumers. However, one of the major ways of strengthening food security is by reducing these losses. It is of high importance in the effort to combat hunger, raise income and improve food security and livelihoods. This workshop is designed to shed light on postharvest losses and strategies to reduce them.
Interventions in PHL reduction are seen as an important component of the efforts of many agencies to reduce food insecurity. PHL is increasingly being recognized as part of an integrated approach to realizing agriculture’s full potential to meet the world’s increasing food and energy needs.

INTRODUCTION
Gender sensitivity in agricultural practices and extension is an important area that affects people of all walks of life. It entails gender equity, gender roles and further implies that roles should not be ascribed for instance to the females alone, or the males exclusively as this will amount to set back to the progress of agriculture. Gender equality refers to equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities for women and men, girls and boys. It is the absence of discrimination on the basis of a person’s sex in opportunities, in the allocation of resources and benefits, or in access to services such as agricultural advice. It implies that the interests, needs, and priorities of both women and men are taken into consideration, recognizing the diversity among different groups of women and men.
This training highlights such gender-related issues and presents strategies for meeting them. We explore various ways of delivery of agricultural extension services in a way that improves gender-equitable service provision.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
