INTRODUCTION
Farmers’ organization’s-FOs represent farmers’ own interests. They have emerged as a result of Farmers own, real expressed needs. They are effective channels of communication between the member-farmers. Without them, a situation of isolated voices would arise, that lack coordination and general power to affect the behavior of agricultural service providers. Farmer organizatio, for instance, need to be strengthened. FO’s for instance do not have access to diverse sources of income, in some instances, there are no core cultural or economic activities that bind their members, FO’s in certain instances do not have access to capacity-building support, they sometimes operate in unfriendly institutional environment (lack of supportive legislation, no formal recognition). They tend to be weak and are unable to influence powerful actors with the needs of their members.
The Sustainable Livelihoods-SL approach to rural development recognizes the key importance of institutions and organizations to rural people for achieving positive livelihood outcomes
In many prevailing situations worldwide, formation of groups and farmer organizations is done without training them properly in theory and practice on the basic principles of community organizations. Majority of the farmers do not have many skills and experience in the process of establishing these organizations. However, many government agencies have developed national policies for rural development and designed policy framework to help rural people become organized so that delivery of services could be channeled through the various types of farmer organizations or groups. Well-meaning policies provide blueprint structures for farmer organizations (FO) in the form of cooperatives and commodity organizations in order to provide various inputs, marketing, and educational services to the farmers. However, a number of issues surround the establishment and functioning of farmer organizations remain unaddressed

INTRODUCTION
Irrigation can be used to produce outcomes in terms of crop production. Irrigation schemes may also have other outcomes. It is now playing a more important role in agriculture than ever before. However, depending on the climate, the value of the plants or animals, the value of the land and it's suitability for irrigation, the cost, reliability and quality of the water supply, irrigation may or may not be possible or feasible.
Irrigation may enable plants (i.e. crops, pasture) to be grown in a dry climate where it would not otherwise be possible, or it may supplement the existing rainfall and improve growth rates by extending the growth period of the plant, or by ensuring there is adequate moisture during critical periods when the plant is growing most rapidly. The value of irrigation can vary greatly from year to year depending on the distribution of rainfall during the growing season. This training course, therefore, is intended to guide the participants in developing and maintaining sustainable irrigation systems.

INTRODUCTION
Gender sensitivity in agricultural practices and extension is an important area that affects people of all walks of life. It entails gender equity, gender roles and further implies that roles should not be ascribed for instance to the females alone, or the males exclusively as this will amount to set back to the progress of agriculture. Gender equality refers to equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities for women and men, girls and boys. It is the absence of discrimination on the basis of a person’s sex in opportunities, in the allocation of resources and benefits, or in access to services such as agricultural advice. It implies that the interests, needs, and priorities of both women and men are taken into consideration, recognizing the diversity among different groups of women and men.
This training highlights such gender-related issues and presents strategies for meeting them. We explore various ways of delivery of agricultural extension services in a way that improves gender-equitable service provision.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This course is intended for various actors in the Agriculture Extension (Agricultural extension officers, senior agricultural officials and policymakers) working with communities, in governments, funding agencies, Research organizations and non-government organizations among others for Agriculture support activities and other Development programmes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
• Develop programmes, centered on women's needs and constraints, in accomplishing their tasks
• Raising awareness of gender issues as an integral part of a pragmatic research, extension and development work in agriculture,
• Analysis of Roles women play in agricultural development
• Women play a vital role as agricultural producers and as agents of food and nutritional security.
• Access to productive assets such as land and services, finance and extension.
• Constraints impinging upon the ability of women to participate in the collective action as members of agricultural cooperative or water user associations.
• Issues of women tend to lack a political voice.
• Results and outcomes of Gender inequalities i.e. less food being grown, less income being earned, and higher levels of poverty and food insecurity.
• Agriculture in low-income developing countries is a sector with exceptionally high impact in terms of its potential to reduce poverty. Yet for agricultural growth to fulfil this potential, gender disparities must be addressed and effectively reduced.

INTRODUCTION
Markets are important for rural transformation and poverty alleviation. They provide the direct means through which the poor participate in an economic activity as producers (farmers, business groups); as employees (providers of labor); and as consumers (of goods and services).
Working with smallholder farmers to design and set up new income-generating enterprise opportunities, on the other hand, is complex. It requires taking time and dedication to ensure success. This training programme aims at building the agro-enterprise capacity of rural development practitioners to enable them to facilitate the market integration of the most vulnerable beneficiaries. INTRODUCTION
Agricultural extension refers to the application of scientific research and new knowledge to agricultural practices through farmer education. The field of 'extension' now encompasses a wide range of communication and learning activities organized for rural people by educators from different disciplines, including agriculture, agricultural marketing, health, and business studies among others. Extension practitioners are found throughout the world, usually working for government agencies and non-governmental organizations. They are represented by several professional organizations, networks and extension journals.
Agricultural extension services provide critical knowledge in the form of techniques and skills to farmers, with the aim to improve the productivity and sustainability of their operations. Over the decades/ generations, improvements in extension services have been noted. These have resulted in extension services that are often now considered as best practice and promote: existing, location-specific knowledge and experience that farmers have.

INTRODUCTION
Standard courses on statistical analysis assume that survey data arise from a simple random sample of the target population. Little attention is given to characteristics often associated with survey data, including missing data, unequal probabilities of selection, stratified multistage sample designs, and measurement errors. Most standard statistical procedures in software packages commonly used for data analysis (e.g. SAS, SPSS, and Stata) do not allow the analyst to take these properties of survey data into account unless specialized survey procedures are used. Failure to do so can have an important impact on the results of all types of analyses, ranging from simple descriptive statistics to estimates of parameters of multivariate models.
This course provides an introduction to specialized software procedures that have been developed for the analysis of complex sample survey data including testing for between-group differences in means and proportions, regression analysis, logistic regression and multilevel modeling. We will also consider the consequences of non-response and missing data on survey analysis and methods for dealing with missing data. Specialized procedures for survey data analysis from the Stata systems for data management and analysis will be used to develop course examples and exercises

DURATION
10 days

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The course does not require rigorous training in mathematics; however, proficiency in basic mathematics, including algebra and functions, is essential. Survey sampling methods and a basic understanding of sampling concepts such as stratification, cluster sampling and weighting is required. INTRODUCTION
Statistics are a mainstay in the toolkit of program and policy evaluators. If evaluators are going to make sensible use of consultants reports, communicate effectively with funders, and understand others' evaluation reports, then they often need at least a conceptual understanding of relatively complex, recently developed statistical techniques.
The purposes of this course are: to link common evaluation questions with appropriate statistical procedures; to offer a strong conceptual grounding in several important statistical procedures; and to describe how to interpret the results from the statistics in ways that are principled and will be persuasive to intended audiences and to equip those working in governments, funding agencies, and research and non-government organisations to understand, critique and make effective use of evidence from quantitative evaluation studies.

DURATION
10 Days

TRAINING OBJECTIVES
At the end if this training, participants should be able to:
• Understand both random and non-random sampling methods and their use in the M&E Context
• Establish or reconstruct a baseline and assess your project’s/program’s impact.
• Use current data collection technologies such as Social Media analytics and Mobile Data Gathering.
• Understand and Use data analysis software package (STATA).
• Understand a theory of causal inference that covers both random assignment and observational studies, including quasi-experimental and non-experimental studies
• Identify the assumptions needed to infer causality in evaluations
• Describe, compare and contrast six, promising alternatives to random assignment studies for inferring causality, including the requirements for implementing these designs, the strengths and weaknesses of each, and examples from evaluations where these designs have been applied.
• Understand the various Statistical method for monitoring and impact evaluation

INTRODUCTION
Given the escalating population growth, intensified cropping, widespread land degradation and shrinking agricultural land, sustaining agricultural production through improved soil management are critical to the issue of food security and poverty alleviation in developing countries.
Limited availability of additional land for crop production along with declining yield growth for major food crops have heightened concerns about agriculture's ability to feed the world population. Much currently cultivated land is being lost through soil erosion, nutrient depletion, desertification, deforestation, and salinization or overgrazing. As agricultural areas become even more crowded, arable land is likely to come under increasing pressure. This also sets the livelihoods of millions of subsistence farmers at risk.
Integrated soil health and fertility management (ISHFM) is the key to raising productivity levels while maintaining the natural resource base. This training course aims to guide participants on how to replenish soil nutrient pools, maximize on-farm recycling of nutrients, and reduce nutrient losses to the environment and improving the efficiency of external inputs.

INTRODUCTION
The aim of any water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programme is to promote good personal and environmental hygiene in order to protect health. Integrating GIS in WASH programmes helps in implementing target based interventions as it will help to build a model of the complex environment in a much simpler and easier way for you to understand the environment and make proper and informed decisions. Continuing developments in free open source GIS software for both desktop and web application is opening up great possibilities for capturing and processing geographical data, and then publishing maps via the internet. The ability to manage information on water and sanitation services and then overlay it with other spatial features has wide-ranging benefits for project planning and design, monitoring and evaluation, advocacy and accountability.
Integrating GIS in WASH programmes is the way forward, toward achievement of the post 2015 Development agenda aimed at achieving global access to water and sanitation.

OpenHDS is an open source Android tablet application that enables community field workers to collect births, deaths, migrations, pregnancies, deliveries, immunization and other pertinent health information. Field workers can collect data "offline" and upload data to the OpenHDS server when they have mobile connectivity. Health program administrators and policy makers can thus have real time access to health and demographic information in the community. The web-enabled, tablet-based OpenHDS application allows users to efficiently select previously registered individuals and launch various OpenDataKit (ODK) forms to collect additional demographic, morbidity, and service delivery information. The mobile application facilitates the collection, through household interviews, of many health events that occur in the community (or outside the formal health system). Even with a relatively small target population, accurate and statistically significant health and demographic rates can be computed when health events are combined with ongoing population demographic information. In addition to computing demographic data, health administrators and researchers are able to assess health system utilization and the burden of disease for a given population over time.

INTRODUCTION
New developments in data science offer a tremendous opportunity to improve decision-making. In the development world, there has been an increase in the number of data gathering initiative such as baseline surveys, Socio-Economic Surveys, Demographic and Health Surveys, Nutrition Surveys, Food Security Surveys, Program Evaluation Surveys, Employees, customers and vendor satisfaction surveys, and opinion polls among others, all intended to provide data for decision making.
It is essential that these efforts go beyond merely generating new insights from data but also to systematically enhance individual human judgment in real development contexts.
How can organizations better manage the process of converting the potential of data science to real development outcomes? How can organizations go beyond merely generating new insights to changing behaviors — not only of their employees, but beneficiary and communities too?
This ten days hands-on course is tailored to put all these important consideration into perspective.
