INTRODUCTION
Farmers’ organization’s-FOs represent farmers’ own interests. They have emerged as a result of Farmers own, real expressed needs. They are effective channels of communication between the member-farmers. Without them, a situation of isolated voices would arise, that lack coordination and general power to affect the behavior of agricultural service providers. Farmer organizations therefore need to be strengthened. FO’s for instance do not have access to diverse sources of income, in some instances, there are no core cultural or economic activities that bind their members, FO’s in certain instances do not have access to capacity-building support, they sometimes operate in unfriendly institutional environment (lack of supportive legislation, no formal recognition). They tend to be weak and are unable to influence powerful actors with the needs of their members.
The Sustainable Livelihoods-SL approach to rural development recognizes the key importance of institutions and organizations to rural people for achieving positive livelihood outcomes
In many prevailing situations worldwide, formation of groups and farmer organizations is done without training them properly in theory and practice on the basic principles of community organizations. Majority of the farmers do not have many skills and experience in the process of establishing these organizations. However, many government agencies have developed national policies for rural development and designed policy framework to help rural people become organized so that delivery of services could be channeled through the various types of farmer organizations or groups. Well-meaning policies provide blueprint structures for farmer organizations (FO) in the form of cooperatives and commodity organizations in order to provide various inputs, marketing, and educational services to the farmers. However, a number of issues surround the establishment and functioning of farmer organizations remain unaddressed.

INTRODUCTION
In most countries, marketing problems are currently regarded as beyond the scope of field-level agricultural extension workers who are the officers in direct contact with the farmers. Therefore, the farmer has to take on commercial and marketing skills. Marketing is the process by which the space between the producer and the consumer is bridged. The process obviously involves transport and techniques for minimizing crop losses. An effective distribution system will also require the establishment of rural businesses such as truck drivers and packaging manufacturers, contractors and wholesalers. The production/marketing chain is a two way process. Produce flows from the rural areas into the cities; money and market information should flow back. As tastes in the city market evolve, the rural community can use this market information to target its production accordingly. This course aims to enhance farmers’ ability in commercial production planning, management of vegetables, tropical fruits, flowers and ornamental plants and to focus on crops produced in order to make it available commercially, particularly with those which have high market potential in participants’ home countries.

INTRODUCTION
A value chain describes the full range of activities that are required to bring a product or service from conception, through the intermediary phases of production and delivery to final consumers, and final disposal after use. In agriculture, it can be thought of as a set of processes and flows from the inputs to production to processing, marketing and to the final the consumer. This includes activities such as design, production, marketing, distribution and support services up to the final consumer.
This approach combines the strengths of value chain analysis with the promotion of sustainable, market-based solutions (MBSs) that respond to the recurrent needs of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, (MSMEs) including farmers. Value chain analysis is important in understanding markets, inter-firm relationships, and critical constraints that limit growth and industry competitiveness. Collaboration among private sector and market actors to address value chain constraints can result in MBS that are sustainable in the long run and that do not distort local markets. This training course aims at guiding participants towards development of sustainable value chains.

INTRODUCTION
Health outcomes are quite low across much of the developing world, and the persistence of deep inequities in health status is a problem from which no country in the world is exempt. At the center of this human crisis is a failure of health systems. Much of the burden of disease can be prevented or cured with known, affordable technologies. The problem is getting drugs, vaccines, information and other forms of prevention, care or treatment – on time, reliably, in sufficient quantity and at reasonable cost – to those who need them. In too many countries the systems needed to do this are on the point of collapse, or are accessible only to groups in the population. Failing or inadequate health systems are one of the main obstacles to scaling-up interventions to make achievement of internationally agreed goals such as the MDGs a realistic prospect.
The growing urge to improve health care systems increases the urgency of this course that builds and strengthens the capacity of health worker, policy and decision makers in the health service sectors with an aim to achieve better health outcomes.

INTRODUCTION
The majority of the rural poor rely heavily on their local environments to provide basic necessities like water, food and energy. These vital resources provide the backbone of many rural livelihoods and their stability is key to securing the well-being of their entire communities.
Disasters and food insecurity are directly interconnected. They interrupt market access, trade and food supply, reduce income, deplete savings and erode livelihoods. Drought, plant pests and diseases, animal diseases and food contamination have a direct economic impact by reducing farm production, by adversely affecting prices, trade, and market access and by decreasing farm income and employment. Economic crises such as soaring food prices reduce real income, force the poor to sell their assets, decrease food consumption, and reduce their dietary diversity and access to safe and quality food. Disasters create poverty traps that increase the prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition.
Disaster risk reduction is about protecting people’s livelihoods from shocks, and strengthening their capacity to absorb the impact of, and recover from, disruptive events. It is a necessary ingredient for food and nutrition security. Furthermore, it also creates a multiplier effect that accelerates the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal 1: the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger.

INTRODUCTION
Gender sensitivity in agricultural practices and extension is an important area that affects people of all walks of life. It entails gender equity, gender roles and further implies that roles should not be ascribed for instance to the females alone, or the males exclusively as this will amount to set back to the progress of agriculture. Gender equality refers to equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities for women and men, girls and boys. It is the absence of discrimination on the basis of a person’s sex in opportunities, in the allocation of resources and benefits, or in access to services such as agricultural advice. It implies that the interests, needs, and priorities of both women and men are taken into consideration, recognizing the diversity among different groups of women and men.
This training highlights such gender-related issues and presents strategies for meeting them. We explore various ways of delivery of agricultural extension services in a way that improves gender-equitable service provision.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This course is intended for various actors in the Agriculture Extension (Agricultural extension officers, senior agricultural officials and policymakers) working with communities, in governments, funding agencies, Research organizations and non-government organizations among others for Agriculture support activities and other Development programmes.

DURATION

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
• Develop programmes, centered on women's needs and constraints, in accomplishing their tasks
• Raising awareness of gender issues as an integral part of a pragmatic research, extension and development work in agriculture,
• Analysis of Roles women play in agricultural development
• Women play a vital role as agricultural producers and as agents of food and nutritional security.
• Access to productive assets such as land and services, finance and extension.
• Constraints impinging upon the ability of women to participate in the collective action as members of agricultural cooperative or water user associations.
• Issues of women tend to lack a political voice.
• Results and outcomes of Gender inequalities i.e. less food being grown, less income being earned, and higher levels of poverty and food insecurity.
• Agriculture in low-income developing countries is a sector with exceptionally high impact in terms of its potential to reduce poverty. Yet for agricultural growth to fulfil this potential, gender disparities must be addressed and effectively reduced.

INTRODUCTION
Disaster risk within a country has its roots in development decisions that do not adequately address disaster concerns, and the resulting disasters are coming at the cost of development and poverty reduction. By not considering disaster risk in development planning, new risks could be unintentionally created or existing ones exacerbated through investments in infrastructure and public services, and through improper planning and regulation.
Thus it is essential that the process of development planning identifies and analyzes the underlying causes of risk, and factors in measures for risk reduction. By mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into national development processes, disaster risk considerations can be made an integral part of development processes, especially in priority sectors such as agriculture, education, health, housing and roads.
This course has been developed to enhance the capacity of government officials, development partners and stakeholders involved in development planning to mainstream disaster risk reduction into development activities and practices.

DURATION
5 days.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The course is particularly useful for government officials responsible for disaster risk reduction policy and planning, national development planning, land-use planning, local development or finance; representatives of national forums on the Millennium Development Goals; and related agencies.
The course will also benefit development professionals from development agencies (e.g., UN agencies, bilateral and multilateral agencies and nongovernmental organizations), working closely with government agencies on issues related to development policy, planning and programs.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The goal of the course is to enhance understanding of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction (DRR) into the development planning processes through building the capacities of government officials, development partners and stakeholders to implement disaster resilient development.
The specific objectives of the course include:
•Increasing awareness among participants on the need to mainstream disaster risk reduction into the development planning processes
•Enhancing the capacity of participants on ‘how to’ mainstream disaster risk reduction concerns into the national, sub-national, and sectoral development planning processes
•Application of GIS and RS in disaster risk reduction
•Providing a platform for experience sharing, discussion and interactive professional exchange on mainstreaming disaster reduction in development

TOPICS TO BE COVERED
The course will be delivered through three modules:
•Introduction to disaster risk reduction
•Mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into the development planning process
•GIS and Disaster Risk Reduction
•Hazard, vulnerability and Risk assessment with GIS and RS
•Application of Risk Information for Risk Reduction Planning
•Enabling environment for mainstreaming

INTRODUCTION
With growing emphasis on participatory approaches towards development, there has been recognition that monitoring and evaluation (M&E) should also be participatory. Conventionally, M&E has involved outside experts coming in to measure performance against pre-set indicators, using standardized procedures and tools. In contrast, participatory monitoring and evaluation (PM&E) involves primary stakeholders as active participants and offers new ways of assessing and learning from change that are more inclusive, and reflects the perspectives and aspirations of those most directly affected.
This course is intended to broaden participants’ understanding of participatory monitoring and evaluation (PM&E) as a support to program/project management at different levels and as a tool for strengthening participation, enhancing local capacity, and increasing local people’s confidence and control over development decisions and processes. The course examines PM&E concepts and principles, as well as methods, tools and techniques, which have been tested and used in the field.

RECENT CLIENTS

INTRODUCTION
Given the escalating population growth, intensified cropping, widespread land degradation and shrinking agricultural land, sustaining agricultural production through improved soil management is critical to the issue of food security and poverty alleviation in developing countries.
Limited availability of additional land for crop production along with declining yield growth for major food crops have heightened concerns about agriculture's ability to feed the world population. Much currently cultivated land is being lost through soil erosion, nutrient depletion, desertification, deforestation, and salinization or overgrazing. As agricultural areas become even more crowded, arable land is likely to come under increasing pressure. This also sets the livelihoods of millions of subsistence farmers at risk.
Integrated soil health and fertility management (ISHFM) is the key in raising productivity levels while maintaining the natural resource base. This training course aims to guide participants on how to replenish soil nutrient pools, maximize on-farm recycling of nutrients, and reduce nutrient losses to the environment and improving the efficiency of external inputs.
