INTRODUCTION

Farmers’ organization’s-FOs represent farmers’ own interests. They have emerged as a result of Farmers own, real expressed needs. They are effective channels of communication between the member-farmers. Without them, a situation of isolated voices would arise, that lack coordination and general power to affect the behavior of agricultural service providers. Farmer organizations therefore need to be strengthened. FO’s for instance do not have access to diverse sources of income, in some instances, there are no core cultural or economic activities that bind their members, FO’s in certain instances do not have access to capacity-building support, they sometimes operate in unfriendly institutional environment (lack of supportive legislation, no formal recognition). They tend to be weak and are unable to influence powerful actors with the needs of their members.

INTRODUCTION

Disaster risk within a country has its roots in development decisions that do not adequately address disaster concerns, and the resulting disasters are coming at the cost of development and poverty reduction. By not considering disaster risk in development planning, new risks could be unintentionally created or existing ones exacerbated through investments in infrastructure and public services, and through improper planning and regulation.
This course has been developed to enhance the capacity of government officials, development partners and stakeholders involved in development planning to mainstream disaster risk reduction into development activities and practices.

DURATION
5 days.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The course is particularly useful for government officials responsible for disaster risk reduction policy and planning, national development planning, land-use planning, local development or finance; representatives of national forums on the Millennium Development Goals; and related agencies.
The course will also benefit development professionals from development agencies (e.g., UN agencies, bilateral and multilateral agencies and nongovernmental organizations), working closely with government agencies on issues related to development policy, planning and programs.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
• Increasing awareness among participants on the need to mainstream disaster risk reduction into the development planning processes
• Enhancing the capacity of participants on ‘how to’ mainstream disaster risk reduction concerns into the national, sub-national, and sectoral development planning processes
• Application of GIS and RS in disaster risk reduction
• Providing a platform for experience sharing, discussion and interactive professional exchange on mainstreaming disaster reduction in development

TOPICS TO BE COVERED
• Introduction to disaster risk reduction
• Mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into the development planning process
• GIS and Disaster Risk Reduction
• Hazard, vulnerability and Risk assessment with GIS and RS
• Application of Risk Information for Risk Reduction Planning

INTRODUCTION
Given the escalating population growth, intensified cropping, widespread land degradation and shrinking agricultural land, sustaining agricultural production through improved soil management is critical to the issue of food security and poverty alleviation in developing countries.
Limited availability of additional land for crop production along with declining yield growth for major food crops have heightened concerns about agriculture's ability to feed the world population. Much currently cultivated land is being lost through soil erosion, nutrient depletion, desertification, deforestation, and salinization or overgrazing. As agricultural areas become even more crowded, arable land is likely to come under increasing pressure. This also sets the livelihoods of millions of subsistence farmers at risk.
Integrated soil health and fertility management (ISHFM) is the key in raising productivity levels while maintaining the natural resource base. This training course aims to guide participants on how to replenish soil nutrient pools, maximize on-farm recycling of nutrients, and reduce nutrient losses to the environment and improving the efficiency of external inputs.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This course is intended for various actors in the Agriculture Extension (Agricultural extension officers, senior agricultural officials and policy makers) working with communities, in governments, funding agencies, Research organizations and non-government organizations among others for Agriculture support activities and other development programmes.

INTRODUCTION
Shelter & settlement planning in emergencies helps you understand strategies and practices that are intrinsic to the shelter sector and humanitarian sector in general. The training aims to improve the effectiveness of specialist and non - specialist in emergency response.
This training aims to equip participants with the skills required to design a shelter and settlements response in a humanitarian crisis after natural disasters. It will provide participants with an overview of shelter and settlements in emergencies, their relevance in humanitarian programmes and an understanding of the principles and practice of humanitarian shelter response.
At the end of the training, students will have acquired strategic and practical knowledge of shelter and settlements policies, methods, tools and procedures in the humanitarian response system and are prepared to practice these in a sustainable manner from relief to recovery.
The overall objective of the course is to introduce non-specialist and specialist participants to Settlement Planning and Shelter impacts and options by developing practical skills in the development of appropriate strategies for settling and sheltering populations affected by conflict and natural disasters. Emergency programmes, ranging from host family support and refugee camps to reconstruction and disaster preparedness; and projects, ranging from support of local health infrastructure to the distribution of shelter will form the backdrop of this course.

DURATION
5 days.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Individuals working in the humanitarian and shelter sectors for the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, United Nations agencies or Non-Governmental Organizations, or Governments, particularly agencies or institutions actively involved in the delivery of humanitarian assistance through shelter and settlements responses at global or country level. NGOs involved in the development and emergency interventions, individuals who have experience of relief, rehabilitation, architects, experienced supervisors and non-technical experts/programme personnel managing shelter programmes in emergencies, those who are likely to be involved in disaster response initiatives and/or development work.
The training is also open to individuals seeking to advance their understanding of and expertise in the field of shelter and settlements operations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
• Understand the range of possible impacts of settlement and shelter upon local, national and regional security, protection, community relations, public health, natural resource management, and other sectors of response such as water supply.
• Understand the range of transitional settlement options available for support, including host families, self-settlement, collective centres, camps, and reconstruction following conflict and natural disasters, and how these options can be combined into a strategic response for an affected population and their hosts.
• Understand the mechanisms and phases of coordination and response, assuming that non-specialist representatives and country managers often make the most significant decisions for transitional settlement and shelter, and assuming that assessment and participation are key to programme success.
• Understand the relevant standards (Country specific, Sphere and UNHCR) and best practice in the use of these standards. Gain an overview of how to develop and manage programmes in areas of natural and man-made risk, such as earthquakes and floods, and in hot and cold climatic conditions.
• Gain an overview of basic field survey and appropriate construction techniques, including an understanding of health and safety, direct and contracted labor, project and site management, and the current range of materials.
• Gain an overview of safe shelter and appropriate construction technologies in context of disaster response and preparedness.
• Feel confident in contributing to a transitional settlement or shelter programme, whether in the role of coordinator, manager, settlement and shelter specialist.

INTRODUCTION
A critical aspect of the scientific process is the reporting of new results in scientific journals in order to disseminate that information to the larger community of scientists. Communication of your results contributes to the pool of knowledge within your discipline (and others) and very often provides information that helps others interpret their own experimental results. The training course guides you in choosing appropriate formats and/or writing styles in developing various scientific journals. The participants will also be guided to outline a complete scientific paper, choose an appropriate journal to which they will submit the finished paper for publication, and prepare a checklist that will allow them to independently judge whether your paper is ready to submit.

DURATION
5 days

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This course is designed for students who have previous experience with academic research. If you juPh.D.finished your graduate dissertation, just began your PhD, or are at a different stage of your academic journey or career and just want to publish your work.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The objective of this course is to guide participant on a step by step process of developing a scientific paper. After the end of the training, the participants will be able to;
