Sports / Tottenham Fan Arrested For Throwing Banana At Arsenal Forward, Pierre (photos) by InoutNaija(f): 11:10pm On Dec 02, 2018
A Tottenham supporter was arrested for throwing a banana skin at Arsenal and Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after he scored during north London derby on Sunday.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed there were seven arrests made and one arrested was a Tottenham fan who hurled banana skin onto the pitch as Aubameyang celebrated scoring an early penalty in front of the Tottenham fans.

The authorities said as Arsenal players mobbed around their star striker who scored the first goal in the match, a banana was seen to be thrown from the away section, landing close by where the Arsenal team celebrated the goal.

The moment the piece of fruit was seen hurling through the air was captured by photographers at the stadium. There were also six arrests for public order offences, and two are believed to be Arsenal supporters who lit smoke canisters during the match, according to Mail Online Sport.

Tottenham are likely to face a disciplinary action for 'fan racism' after the incident. The game ended 4 - 2, with Arsenal snatching all the three points in the fierce game.

Politics / Granting Atiku Visa Would Imply You Have Endorsed Him - FG To US Government by InoutNaija(f): 9:33am On Nov 30, 2018

The Federal government has asked the United States government to think carefully before granting the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, a visa in order create the impression of endorsing him for the 2019 election.

Atiku who has been accused of corruption and investigated by the United States government, has reportedly been barred from entering the US for many years. Recall that the Director-General of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Orgsanisation (APCO), Gbenga Daniel, in a recent interview, said Atiku has received signal from the US government to apply for visa which would be granted.

Reacting to this development, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, at a press briefing in Abuja yesterday November 29th, said although the U.S. has the prerogative of whom to issue visa, it should be mindful of the timing, in order not to give the impression that Atiku has been endorsed by the U.S. government.

“We understand and appreciate the fact that it is the prerogative of the U.S. to grant a visa to anyone who applies. However, we want the U.S. to be neutral and be wary of taking any decision that will give the impression that they are favouring or endorsing one candidate over the other.

Impression must not be created that the U.S. government is endorsing one particular candidate over the other.

I am sure you will all recall the Jefferson’s case and the cold 90,000 U.S. dollar in fridge. We are not unaware that Atiku has engaged the services of some lobbyists to persuade the U.S. to issue (a) visa to him. Our position is that if the former vice president is seeking the U.S. visa we have no problem about it.

However, we want the U.S. government not to create the impression that it is endorsing one candidate over the other,’’
he said.

Politics / Fayose Turned Us To Refugees In Our Land, Says Ado-ekiti Indigenes by InoutNaija(f): 6:56am On Nov 29, 2018
The former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has been accused by Residents of Ijoka Community in Ado-Ekiti of reducing them to refugees in their own land through the demolition exercise carried out by his administration.

The residents of the community claimed that their properties were demolished without prior notification. They also alleged that they were not compensated for their lost properties, while those compensated were paid monies far below the value of their properties.

They Ijoka elders and other residents, who were led by the Elejoka, Chief Lawrence Omodara, made the revelations during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi.

The elders stated that the shock many residents of the community suffered as a result of the demolition, led to their untimely death.

They, however, sought the assistance of the state government for their compensation to be paid adding that their demands for compensation from Fayose did materialise before he left office on October 15.

One of the community leaders, Mr. Joseph Fagbuaro, said Fayose gave them several appointments to meet on the issue of compensation which the ex-governor did not honour until the expiration of his tenure.

Fagbuaro told InoutNaija: “Truly what happened to us in Ijoka in the last administration was not proper, it was about 5 O’clock in the evening that the former Governor Fayose started demolishing our houses, destroyed our properties and our ancestral homes; where we used to perform traditional rites during some festivals in Ado Ekiti, without notifying us, without discussing it with anyone what he (Fayose) wanted to use the houses or the land to do.

“We appreciate you (the Deputy Governor) for granting us audience, all attempts to make our plight known to the government during Fayose regime were unsuccessful, he gave us appointments several times but failed to attend to us.

“Our houses were demolished without prior notice alongside with our belongings inside the houses.

“Some of us went to the farm before we returned, our buildings had been pulled down.

“Please help us, some of us died because they had nowhere to go, when their houses were demolished because it is not all of us that have children that built houses.

“Some keep renting houses about, imagine somebody of my age, 73 years just going about to rent house.

“This is why we are here, please help us, some of us are now refugees in own native land.

“Also, majority of us were not compensated at all while those who were compensated got peanuts compared to the value of what was destroyed.

“The whole Ijoka community was about going to extinction; all our buildings and lands had been demolished and cleared for road by the past administration.

“We plead for the intervention of the State government, we want the restoration of our ancestral home, we don’t want our community to vanish like that and we want our people to be properly compensated as well.”

The deputy governor, in his response, who promised that the government will look into the matter of the demolition, as he expressed surprise over the claim that majority of the people who houses were demolished had not been compensated.

Egbeyemi said: “My boss, Governor Kayode Fayemi, like people to be straightforward because he upholds the virtue of integrity and truthfulness.”

“The President encourages all Nigerians, the literary community and lovers of art to honour Ikeogu Oke’s memory by imbibing the didactic message of his works.

Politics / Atiku Calls For More Funding To Support The Military, Win War Against Insurgency by InoutNaija(f): 7:42pm On Nov 22, 2018

Following the death of dozens of soldiers during an attack on a military base by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State last weekend, the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has called for more funding for the Nigerian Army.

The former Vice President, who assured that increase in funding will enable the military acquire the necessary hardware needed to confront the insurgent, stated further that more funding will help boost the morale of the troop, which will in turn translate to victory for the country.

Atiku made this call in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, through his media adviser Paul Ibe.

The presidential candidate, who called for unity among political elite on the matter of funding for the military, describe as embarrassing a situation where criminals and terrorist have better and more sophisticated weapons than members of our armed forces.

“The increasing deaths of our servicemen at the hand of terrorists and criminals, especially in the Northeast and Middle Belt, is a clear sign that our troops need to be better funded and better equipped. It is true that funds are scarce, but this is an emergency and if we do not take care of an emergency, it becomes a crisis which can lead to a total breakdown of law and order – anarchy in essence.

I have been traveling all over Nigeria and I meet with both Muslim and Christian clerics who tell me that in the Northeast and Middle Belt, they now officiate over more funerals than they do marriages and child dedications. This is heartbreaking and we must do something immediately to change the situation.” he said.

Abubakar further admonished the Nigerian government to reconsider it stand on the release of repentant Boko Haram members, stating that it was almost impossible to de-radicalize these insurgents in a short period of time.

“Apart from funding, I advise the Federal Government to review its policy of releasing so called ‘repentant’ terrorists. To think that the government can de radicalise these individuals in so short a time is wishful thinking. Many people, myself included, think that the upsurge in terror activities coming after the release of such detainees, is not coincidental.

Finally, I urge the National Assembly to suo moto, take action to appropriate funds for our military on a fast-track basis. These are desperate times for Nigeria and desperate times call for dedication to duty of all concerned.

I am tired of issuing condolences for unnecessary deaths. I prefer to make a difference and prevent unnecessary deaths amongst the gallant men and women of our armed forces and the civilian population they took an oath to protect.” he added.

Politics / Houses Linked To Me By EFCC, A Wild Goose Chase - Fayose by InoutNaija(f): 7:29pm On Nov 22, 2018
The former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is going into another wild goose chase, following houses linked to him.

Fayose on his Twitter account, on Thursday, claimed that it was another media campaign against him.

He said, “Just been informed that operatives of EFCC in collaboration with All Progressives Congress government in Ekiti are going about sealing houses of innocent people in the state, under the guise that the houses are linked to me. This is another wild goose chase and the usual media campaign against me.

“It is only in our country that an anti-corruption agency will first go about sealing houses before determining the ownership, which can be done so easily by visiting relevant agencies. I am informing the public ahead of their usual blackmail and media trial.

“The other time, EFCC sealed a petrol station in Akute, Ogun State, claiming it belonged to me. They also sealed a guest house in Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja only to find out later that the house is owned by a retired army general. Methinks EFCC should be acting better now.”

Politics / Ex-president, Jonathan Accuses Buhari Of Causing Recession After His Handover by InoutNaija(f): 7:50am On Nov 21, 2018
Former president, Goodluck Jonathan in one of the chapters of his book that he published yesterday, alleged that the recession Nigeria’s economy faced after his exit from office, was self inflicted by the APC government to tarnish his image and that of his government.

Recall that in August 2016 Nigeria’s economy official slide into recession but by September 2017, the economy was announced to have been out of recession.

In his book, Jonathan said that the clueless tag given to his administration by the current government and their sympathisers, was to humilate him and everyone that served under him. Jonathan stated that the APC government instead of working for the progress of the country, came up with the blatant lie that they inherited an empty treasury.

Read except from the book below:

“Recall that the opposition and their sympathisers and campaigners, both local and international, with their malicious propaganda, tore our economy to shreds, threatened our stability and existence as a nation and intimidated our citizens, all in the bid to take over power. Nevertheless, we conducted ourselves in a manner that allowed a peaceful transfer of power from a ruling party to an opposition party, for the first time since Independence in 1960. Rather than forge a coalition and build on the momentum we had gathered when they eventually took office, they went on a persecution spree and vengeance mission. That the country slipped into recession soon after we left office was a self-inflicted injury caused by misplaced priorities. The narrative of inheriting empty treasury is a blatant lie.

“Also, the excuse of the collapse of world crude prices does not hold water. This is because the Fourth Republic took off in 1999 with crude oil selling for less than $20 per barrel and a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth at 0.58 per cent, according to National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) figures. Yet, the economy maintained a steady growth from that year, peaking at 15.33 per cent in 2002 when the average crude oil price was about $25.

“It is also instructive that the oil and gas sector constitute about 11 per cent of our GDP. There had to be a wider causative factor than just the fall in world crude prices.

“It also amounts to standing facts on their heads to continuously claim that recession was caused by so-called mindless looting. The truth is that the opposition, in a bid to undo our government, became its own undoing when it got to power, because of the burden of justifying deliberate misrepresentations. There is wisdom in the saying that if you win a prize and get the crown, don’t go around destroying the person who previously held that prize; it will lose its value. Even after winning the election and forming the government at the centre, the blame game continued. When two brothers fight to death, it is the neighbour that inherits their father’s wealth. And we have seen neigbouring nations like the Republic of Benin and Ghana reaping from the capital flight out of Nigeria.

“Despite Nigeria’s attainment of Independence from Britain ahead of most other African countries, we have been increasingly conditioned to seek succour in the blame game. It is time for Nigeria to take responsibility. As Gen. Murtala Mohammed said while addressing the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now African Union (AU) in 1976 that ‘Africa has come of age’. I add that Nigeria has come of age. We either live up to that or we don’t. I am convinced that we can, and we should. We must as a nation always strive to improve the quality of life of our citizens and make developmental plans that will focus on the younger generation. That way, Nigeria will not be a liability to the rest of the world. Our population will be an albatross to us and our allies if we do not take the necessary step to tum it into a great opportunity.

“The sundry accusations by the new administration would appear to have baited the media. Media trials are entertaining, but have little or no effect in fighting corruption and improving the economy. Since I left office, rather than improve on our TI (Transparency International) corruption perception record, the situation has worsened with the nation going 12 places backward, becoming number 148 according to the latest CPI ranking for 2017, from 136 in 2014 when I was president.

“It was bad enough that Boko Haram insurgents continue killing people and ruining businesses, but what is worse is when politicians downgrade the economy by demarketing the country internationally. You should never try to slander your political opponents by destroying your country’s economy. Capital flight intensified and companies started laying off staff. In all these, I hope a lesson would be learnt. If you embark on digging a hole for your enemy, you better make it shallow, because you might end up in the hole yourself. How do you attract investors you already repelled through your utterances? Investors are an ultra-sensitive lot. Money runs away from unstable societies.

“Most painful have been the attacks on my ministers, aides and associates and even members of my family. There is an attempt to erase our legacy from history. The good thing is that the unending barrage of attacks, deliberate misinformation and programmed media smear campaigns have failed to sway the opinion of those with a clear view of our beliefs, efforts and achievements. There are millions of Nigerians and others around the world who are still impressed with our modest achievements in consolidating democracy and growing the nation’s economy. They will continue to serve as my strength and encouragement. Sometimes, I laugh when certain propagandists attempt to stand logic on its head by maligning my administration as one bereft of ideas and ‘clueless’.

“In assessing my administration, it is best to focus on facts. I cannot assess myself. I leave that to history. But I can assess my cabinet and I make bold to say that never in the history of Nigeria, till date, has the nation had such a star-studded cabinet, full of achievers and people who got to the top of their chosen fields by merit. Just consider that my minister of State for Health, Dr. Muhammed Ali Pate, is now a professor at America’s Duke University, as well as a Senior Adviser to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation based in Washington DC. My minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, is now the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

My Co-ordinating minister, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, is the chairperson of the Board of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) and the African Risk Capacity (ARC). She also sits on the board of Twitter and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, just as she is a Senior Adviser at Lazard and a Director at Standard Chartered Plc in the United Kingdom, amongst others.

My minister of Communication Technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson, is currently Chairperson of Custodian and Allied Insurance Limited as well as the Global Alliance for Affordable Internet. And it is not just members of my cabinet. Others who served with me in different capacities are also soaring on the world stage. A good example is Ms. Arunma Oteh, who I appointed the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commissnon (SEC).Under her steady and skillful direction, Nigeria’s equity market grew in metric proportions, and by the time I left office in 2015, the market had tripled in size to $150 billion in value. Two months after I left office, Ms. Oteh was appointed a Vice President and Treasurer at the World Bank.

“These are reputable individuals who served their country meritoriously and who, on the strength of their performance as ministers in my government, are now waxing stronger and valiantly on the world stage with only the sky as their limit. With such personalities on my cabinet, no one can factually say we were ‘clueless’ or inept. The evidence of performance is simply overwhelming. We gave Nigeria an impressive and steady GDP growth rate at 6.7 per cent per annum.

“We were officially cited as the third fastest growing economy in the world by CNN Money in 2014. We eradicated polio and guinea worm and became the first nation in the world to defeat the Ebola virus, such that the then richest man in the world, Bill Gates celebrated us for our prowess in the health sector. We reduced our food import bill by 36 per cent.

“I did the best that I could to preserve Nigeria’s unity and ensure a brighter future for all Nigerian children. This remains my driving force even now that I am out of office. I can hold my head high in my post-presidential life to say that under my watch, no Nigerian was witch-hunted because of his or her views and not one political assassination occurred under me.

“The momentum we built was a welcome development and a necessary boost which I recommend to other African nations as a means to help the continent expand capacity and reduce youth unemployment. These are some of the positive steps I took to guide Nigeria safely to land during the difficult times she found herself. Looking back, I can say that I have a sense of fulfilment. It is said that a good conscience suffers no accusations.

“I have served Nigeria with all my strength and God alone is the judge of the universe. I certainly hope that all those who cast aspersions at us can say the same about themselves because the end of a matter is better than its beginning. I had no enemies to fight; I have none still. It is obvious that the world is happy with President Paul Kagame of Rwanda. The country came out of genocide. President Kagame made propaganda his enemy and got to work. Although Rwanda experienced the worst genocide in Africa’s recent history, it is today the toast of the world.

“My hope is that African leaders must embrace the concept of democracy that delivers purposeful leadership, improves the lives of the people and envision a secure future for the nation. Africa is critical to global progress and for that reason I urge all African nations to work with fidelity and commitment for the greater good of the continent.

“Looking into the future, I see that our leaders can do a lot to eliminate ethnic sentiments in our societies, enthrone merit and build a system that gives citizens equal opportunities to excel. A country that cannot use its best brains will lag behind in the comity of nations. African leaders should remove key impediments limiting our growth. When we build capacity in the youth, it will unleash the creativity that would catalyse rapid development.

“Since after my handover, and as part of the dedication of the rest of my life to the cause of peace and good governance, God helping me, I have engaged myself in finding ways of advancing the course of democracy and good governance in Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world, through my Foundation, the Goodluckjonathan Foundation (GJF). The GJF will partner with all men and organisations of goodwill across the globes who believe in the ideals to which we have committed ourselves. We will seek to prevent conflicts, create conducive environment for businesses to thrive, work to advance the frontiers of education and create employment for the youth as well as encourage them to be self-employed. Millions of our people need help. We need to develop home-grown talents. We must aid educationally-disadvantaged children. Nigeria must become the beacon of hope in Africa. I urge Nigerians and Africans to join me in the effort to create a fresh thinking and enlightenment of the people of this great country and our wonderful continent as we speak out against unrestrained and reckless craving for political office.

“We have to rebuild our nations but we must start by rebuilding ourselves. So, let us roll up our sleeves and go to work, actualising our dream, hopes and aspirations for a prosperous and peaceful Nigeria and Africa.”

Politics / President Buhari Accused Of Stealing ‘next Level’ Plan From Rex Institute. by InoutNaija(f): 10:21pm On Nov 19, 2018
President Buhari who yesterday launched his 2019 presidential campaign which he titled ‘Next Level’, has been accused of stealing ‘Next Level’ logo from Rex Institute.

President Buhari had argued that “the past few years have put us in good stead to trudge on the Next Level of building an even stronger nation for our people”.

However while Nigerians are divided on his re-election campaign, the ‘Next level’ logo, which has a striking feature with that of Rex Institute which is the creative elongation of the ‘x’ in ‘next’ in a manner as to give the pass mark to a candidate, has earned the Nigerian President call out posts on social media.

The ‘Next level’ plan is a project of the Winthrop University-School Partnership Network in collaboration with Fort Mill School District (York 4), Lancaster County School District, and Rock Hill School District (York 3).

It is a Professional Development Program grant funded by the US Department of Education and administered through the Office of English Learner Aquisition (OELA), PR/Award # T365Z160278.

It should however be noted that this is not the first time Buhari and his handlers have been enmeshed in a plagiarism scandal. In September 2016, his ‘Change Begins With Me’ speech contained several sentences that were identical to some in Barack Obama’s 2008 victory speech.

Reno Omokri who reacted to the brewing ‘Next level’ scandal, wrote;

Not only do they plagiarise speeches (‘I belong to everybody, I belong to nobody’), @MBuhari and @OfficialAPCNg are so intellectually lazy & empty that they plagiarised #NextLevel from The Rex Institute. Can such people take you to any level? Follow @Atiku. The man with the plan!

President @MBuhari called Nigerian youths lazy. Who is lazy between Nigerian youths who created Nollywood and a President with no plans for the future that stole #NextLevel from Associate Professor Kelly Costner? I call on #LazyNigerianYouths to retweet #LazyNigerianPresident

Car Talk / Spain To Ban Vehicles Using Fuel By 2040 by InoutNaija(f): 12:03am On Nov 14, 2018

From 2040, Spain says it will outlaw the sale of new diesel and petrol cars , so as to reduce polluting vehicles to try to cut emissions.

Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s government included the proposal in a draft document for an energy transition law which also calls for Spain to completely decarbonise its economy by 2050.

The announcement comes a year after Britain and France both pledged to ban new diesel and petrol cars by 2040, while Norway is aiming to end the use of all cars running on fossil fuels by 2025.

Sanchez’s government lacks a majority in parliament and it will need to gain the support of other parties to approve the law.

The plan calls for setting up charging points for electric vehicles while cities with over 50,000 inhabitants will have to set up “low emission zones” before 2021, like those that already exist in the centre of Madrid and Barcelona where traffic is restricted.

“By 2050, the electricity system will have to rely exclusively on renewable energy sources,” the document said.

Under the plan new licences for hydrocarbon exploration and fracking will be banned and subsidies that “favour the consumption of fossil fuels” will end.

Sanchez warned Sunday that climate change was “the biggest challenge we face globally”, adding it was necessary to “act with ururgency and determination” before this “great silence war”.

Politics / I Have Been Doing My Best For Nigeria - President Buhari by InoutNaija(f): 6:22pm On Nov 12, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has noted that he is doing all his best to utilize the country’s resources to develop the country.

Mr President said this during an interactive session with the Nigerian community in Paris, while maintaining his commitment towards developing the educational sector.

Buhari who said results can be seen on road, rail and power said “My frustration is that some people still have plenty stolen money stashed in Europe, U S and other countries”.

He promised that allocations to the educational sector will be improved as revenue increases, describing the sector as a major engine for the development of any country.

“We are currently reviewing investments in the entire infrastructure of the country like road, rail and power, including investing more in education. We will certainly need to do more in education,’’ he said.

Buhari also called on elites across the country to rally round and support the educational sector, expressing surprise that the elites are not moved by the fall in standards and structures of educational institutions.

“I am doing my best now to utilize our resources to develop the country,’’ he said. “ We are already getting results on road, rail and power. My frustration is that some people still have plenty stolen money stashed in Europe, U S and other countries.’’

On war against terrorism, Buhari said new weapons and hardware would be given to the military, while the challenge of abduction and kidnapping in some parts of the country will receive more attention with better gathering of intelligence.

“We campaigned on three key issues; security, improving the economy, and fighting corruption, and we have not been controverted by anyone that we have not recorded some results,’’ he added.

Politics / Buhari Allegedly Sends Soldiers To Search Atiku’s Plane Upon Return To Nigeria by InoutNaija(f): 4:18pm On Nov 11, 2018
Buhari allegedly sends soldiers to search Atiku’s plane upon return to Nigeria

Former Presidential spokesperson, Reno Omokri who shared news of Atiku’s plane search on Twitter, wrote;

@Atiku just returned to Nigeria and @MBujari sent a team of Army, Police, Custom & Immigration officers to surround then search his plane. What were they hoping to find? What is Buhari afraid of? Why this harassment? If Buhari performed would he be afraid of losing? #RenosDarts

Why did @MBuhari order such a large military force to surround and search the plane of @Atiku, the Presidential candidate of the @OfficialPDPNig? Was he hoping that they’d find his non existing @WAECNigeria certificate? Our security should face Boko Haram not Atiku #RenosDarts

Politics / Federal Government To Improve Remuneration For Teachers, Other Workers by InoutNaija(f): 7:30am On Nov 07, 2018

The federal government has said that a comprehensive policy for improved remuneration for teachers and all public servants is being developed.

President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by Mr Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), said this at the 2018 Nigeria’s Annual Education Conference on Tuesday, November 6, in Abuja.

InoutNaija reports that president said the remuneration policy would include genuine pension scheme.

The conference has the theme, “Education for Self-Reliance: A System’s Approach to Education for the achievement of Education 2030 Agenda.” He said that the choice and timing of the theme was apt for the fact that Nigeria had dedicated itself to the implementation of the education 2030 agenda.

“With the depression in the labour market, education should now be tailored towards the acquisition of skills and abilities that can make the individual a productive and self-reliant member of the society.”

He said that the federal government, through the ministry of education, had promoted Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Buhari added that government had also developed science and technology education policy for the realisation of TVET objectives and dreams. The president further stated that government had commenced the development of a policy on product innovation, exhibition and commercialisation.

He noted that the development would create a window for advancing the outcomes of the national annual students’ skills competition towards practical utilisation and economic benefits. Buhari said that to reduce unemployment, poverty, hunger and violence, Nigerians must pay less attention to education for white collar jobs and embrace education for self-reliance, job and wealth creation.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the new minimum wage of N30,000 proposed by the Tripartite Committee set up to review the national minimum wage.

The president gave his endorsement on Tuesday, November 6, shortly after he received the report of the committee presented to him.

Politics / PDP's Presidential Candidate, Atiku, Reacts As FG Endorses N30,000 Minimum Wage by InoutNaija(f): 11:02pm On Nov 06, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has commended the federal government for agreeing to pay N30,000 minimum wage negotiated with labour leaders in the country.

Abubakar made the commendation in a statement released by his Presidential Campaign Organisation on Tuesday, November 6, in Abuja.

He described Nigerian workers as the “goose that lays the golden egg” and was worthy of the best pay that Nigeria could afford.

Abubakar recalled that he had last week stated his commitment to a living wage as one of the pillars of his soon-to-be-launched policy document on making workers’ welfare a priority.

He commended the patriotism displayed by the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other labour affiliates in suspending the planned nationwide strike.

InoutNaija gathers that the former vice president also called on the National Assembly to speedily pass legislation that would make the new minimum wage a statutory requirement. He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to keep his promise and abide by the new minimum wage agreement.

“No sacrifice is too great to make for us to get Nigeria working again and that is what the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation is all about.

“Abubakar means jobs, jobs that would pay the minimum wage and above because Nigeria should benefit the masses and not those who are in top government positions.”

Politics / Minimum Wage: Be Considerate In Your Demands – President Buhari Tells Labour by InoutNaija(f): 10:21pm On Nov 05, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday begged the Leaderships of the Nigeria Labour Congress to be considerate in their demands, especially in view of the rot the government inherited from the previous government.

Buhari made the appeal when he received members of the Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria led by Ambassador Oladapo Fafowora at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari urged the unions to understands the federal government is putting infrastructure in place with fewer resources.

“President Buhari also appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress to consider what this government inherited and the more it is doing with fewer resources in putting the economy right,” a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, read.

The President told the retired Ambassadors that Nigerians will never forget the ‘‘lost opportunity between 1999 and 2015,’’ when the nation had huge resources at its disposal.

He said, ”There is no part of the country I haven’t been to, having attempted to be President four times.

”I know the condition of our roads. The rails were literally killed, there was no power despite the admittance of some previous leadership that they spent $16bn on the sector.

”Today, we are getting our priorities right and we believe that of the three fundamental issues we campaigned on – security, the economy and fighting corruption-, we have remained very relevant and Nigerians believe we have achieved something.”

Buhari applauded the People’s Republic of China for financing some of the rail and power projects in the country through concessionary loans.

”I will do my best to see that where there are possibilities of making a quick improvement on infrastructure, we will do it,” he said.

Politics / Minimum Wage: Organised Labour Absent At Fg's Reconciliatory Meeting by InoutNaija(f): 11:51pm On Nov 04, 2018
Members of the Organised Labour on Sunday were absent at the reconciliation meeting with the Federal Government over the non-implementation of the N30,000 new National Minimum Wage for the workers in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government had called a reconciliatory meeting with the Organised Labour and the Organised Private Sector, scheduled to hold at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The National Industrial Court had on Friday gave a ruling restraining the organised labour from embarking on proposed strike on Nov. 6.

Mr Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) said on Sunday that the meeting was part of the exercise that ought to be undertaken as part of the ongoing negotiation.

He said the meeting was to ensure a complete report to be submitted to the presidency on the issues of the new National Minimum Wage.

Mustapha said that the Tripartite Committee has been working assiduously, but though there were outstanding issues that needed to be dealt with, and that was the reason for the rescheduling of the meeting.

“Basically, the only outstanding issue to be dealt with was the harmonisation of the 5th chapter of the report, and thereafter get the figures to be submitted to the government.

“The inaugural speech by Mr President included some very salient points, that caused me to reflect on the work of this committee, and one of it is that there is emphasis that the committee will by consensual agreement arrival at all their decisions and I think that was very important.

” Mr president went further to emphasis that the concern is not only for the welfare of the workers but also every other thing should be taken on board as it affects the county’s economy,

“So, it is a balance of the welfare of the workforce with the effect of the new Minimum Wage on the economy.

“He also underpinned his speech by emphasising the fact we earn to go above basic social protection for Nigerian workers, but also tie to the ability to pay, because I know that a lot of states are even having difficulty meeting the basic minimum wage,” he said.

The SGF also noted that 27 states were faced with the difficulty in the payment of the basic minimum wage that was agreed, saying that he was not making any excuse for them.

He added that the meeting would continue tomorrow (Monday), thereafter members of the tripartite committee would continue with their meeting.

” I want to assure all of you that once the report is concluded and ready, I will personaly ensure that Mr President receives and signs it immediately,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Joe Ajaero, President, United Labour Congress (ULC) told NAN that members of the organised labour got the invitation to the meeting late.

“But hopefully, we will be around for tomorrow’s (Monday) meeting by 11a.m,” he said.

All efforts to get other members of the organised labour proved abortive.

However, Sen. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment gave the assurance that organised labour would be at the meeting on Monday.

According to him, they are not here today and they gave excuse why they are not here.

“We also want to say that we do not support the State governments’ N22,500 proposal and we have also said so.

“We also have our own figure and the Tripartite Committee meeting will look at it and the outcome of the Monday’s meeting will be a consensual, I am sure of that, ” he said.
