Borno state governor prof. Babagana Zulum has disclosed that not all the territories who surrendered to Nigerian troops are criminals, Newspremises reports.

Governor Zulum made the disclosure while briefing the State House Correspondents shortly after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, said over 2,600 surrendered insurgents are now in custody.

According to him, many of those who recently surrendered are women and young children who were forced to join the terrorists and trained to wield AK-47 rifles.

Governor Zulum said the surrendered person would be subjected to the existing laws of the country.

He, however, explained that the insurgents would be taken care of, saying they “will not be left behind.”

The governor disclosed that the surrendered insurgents would be trained for reintegration, stressing that the Nigerian Constitution did not recommend the killing of surrendered terrorists.

Governor Zulum also revealed that over 100,000 people have been killed in the Northeastern region of the country in the past 12 years.

Willian has angered Arsenal fans after appearing to 'like' a social media post from his former club Chelsea reporting their 2 - 0 win over his current club.

The Brazilian winger, 33, swapped Stamford Bridge for the Emirates a year ago on a whopping three-year contract. But he was benched in the match against his former side this weekend due to coronavirus.

At full-time, the Blues shared a celebration post showing the 2-0 scoreline along with a picture of Marcos Alonso, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Jorginho congratulating goalscorer Reece James.

The caption read: "Imagine not being Chelsea."

Shortly after, eagle-eyed fans on social media spotted Willian had given the post a 'like'.

One wrote: "Get rid of these Chelsea double agents from our club!!"

Another said: "Willian liking this on Instagram? And he wonders why the Arsenal fans don’t like him…"

A third added: "Terminate his contract."

And a Chelsea fan joked: "I used to like William when he was at Chelsea but now I absolutely love him."

Willian, 33, endured a shocking first season at Arsenal following a move from Chelsea in the summer of 2020, and reports have linked him with a move away from the club before the summer transfer window closes.

Religion / Earphones, Airpods Are Devilish – Bishop Oyedepo Bans Youths From Usage by Insidenaija: 10:58am On Aug 23, 2021
The founder and president of Living Faith Church Worldwide better known as winners chapel Bishop David Oyedepo has reportedly banned youths with earphones from entering the Church, Newspremises reports.

Oyedepo explained that youths with earphones are not ready to not ready to hear God’s words, hence they should not be allowed into the Church.

He pointed out that earphones are designed by the devil to block youths from moving forward in life.

The clergyman spoke while addressing his members during Sunday’s Service at the Church’s headquarters in Ota, Ogun State.

In his word

“We live in a very rowdy time. Young generation, please listen to me: all these things you plug in your ear will block your way forward. It is designed by the devil to block your way forward.

“No time to hear from God. Many have never heard anything from God. They even plug it in anywhere, on the streets: noise, noise, noise! Zero access to divine guidance. Noise in the morning, afternoon, night.

“We had a situation in South Korea, I saw it in one publication. Now 10,000 Churches were said to close down within 10 years, an average of 1,000 Churches per year. Why? Children, young people will sit down in Church (with earphones): don’t hear nothing Sir.

“I know they don’t do that here because CCU (Crowd Control Unit) is here, you plug something in your ears, while you are in Church? Never. Go somewhere else. Never, you sit down tight, hear the Word or stay on the road. Life is about discipline. I started understanding the Word from the age of 16. I was responding accordingly.”

Politics / Sunday Igboho To Seek Asylum, Return To Nigeria After Buhari’s Tenure – Lawyer by Insidenaija: 10:28am On Aug 21, 2021
The embattled Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo better known as Sunday Igboho has revealed that he will seek asylum in Benin Republic and France when he leaves prison, Newspremises reports.

This was made known by one of Igboho's lawyers, Olusegun Falola on Saturday, August 21, 2021.

According to Falola, Igboho would not return to Nigeria until the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari leaves office.

The counsel added that his client’s continued stay in Benin Republic is a blessing in disguise.

In his words:

“Igboho’s arrest shows he was cheated, because he didn’t commit any criminal offence. He is under Benin Republic’s protection.

“Nigeria did not show up in court or bring up evidence against Igboho. So there are no criminal charges against him. When he leaves prison, he’ll demand asylum from other countries including France, and they will be ready to receive him.

“So he’ll return back to Nigeria when the administration that is against him leaves office.

“The judges asked him if he had land in Cotonou and he responded that he has a land in Seme. So, there is still danger ahead. Igboho’s asylum in Cotonou is for him to stay in the country and do his businesses in the country and also travel to Germany to either live there or to travel to and fro. He’ll use Benin as his new home until Buhari’s tenure is over just for his own safety.”

Newspremises recall that Igboho was apprehended last month in Cotonou while trying to travel to Germany.

This was after the freedom fighter fled Nigeria after he was declared wanted by the Department of State Services, DSS.

DSS declared Igboho wanted after an invasion of his house, and weapons were discovered during the raid.

While Igboho is currently standing trial in Cotonou, the Nigerian government is yet to level any charges against the agitator.

Sports / Arsenal Complete Martin Odegaard Signing From Real Madrid by Insidenaija: 5:00pm On Aug 20, 2021
Arsenal football club has reportedly completed the signing of Norwegian midfielder Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid on a five-year deal for £30m.

Newspremises recall that Arsenal have been locked in discussions with Madrid over Odegaard who spent the second half of the 2020-21 season at the Emirates Stadium, where he impressed.

Odegaard made 14 league appearances where he scored a single goal, in the North-London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, and assisted twice.

Odegaard burst into the scene as a 15-year old in 2014 when he made his senior debut for Norwegian club Stromsgodset in Eliteserien, going on to sign for Real Madrid in January 2015.

The 22-year-old’s arrival in Spain wasn’t smooth sailing, as the youngster understandably struggled for game time at Madrid, initially playing for Castilla (Reserve team), then going out on loan to Heerenveen, Vittese, Real Sociedad and ultimately Arsenal, where his performance ensured a permanent return for Odegaard.

His arrival could spark a boost for fans, players and coaching staff, as Arsenal have struggled to fill the creative void left by the departure of Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal manager, Arteta, speaking on Odegaard’s signing said, “He brings a lot of things that he brought last season as well.

“He made us better, we needed more options, alternatives, creativity and players that can be morals for this football club. He is still a really young man but he has huge experience in different clubs already.

“He has a unique talent based on the way we want to play so I’m delighted that the club has made an effort and we have Martin on a permanent deal here.

“You’ve seen the numbers and what we did after Christmas when Martin was in the team and we had people like Emile, the team performed at a completely different level. He’s someone that we admire and he’s still at the age in his career when the potential he has is still immense.”

Odegaard has been assigned the number 8 jersey but will miss Arsenal’s weekend London derby clash with Chelsea as he awaits visa clearance before he will be available for team selection.

Foreign Affairs / Former Afghan President Denies Fleeing The Country With Helicopter Full Of Cash by Insidenaija: 1:57pm On Aug 19, 2021
Former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani has debunk reports that he allegedly flee the country in a helicopter full of cash, Newspremises reports.

Recall that Ghani ran for his life as Taliban forces entered Kabul on Sunday, August 15, 2021.

The former president Ghani, who Spoke from exile on Thursday, after it has been confirmed that he is in the United Arab Emirates(UAE), said he had left Kabul to prevent bloodshed and denied reports he took large sums of money with him as he departed the presidential palace.

According to him, 'What had happened 25 years ago in Afghanistan was going to take place again. That was something that needed to be avoided, a shameful development like that,' Ghani said in a video streamed on Facebook on Wednesday, his first public comments since it was confirmed he was in the UAE.

'The dignity of Afghanistan was important for me, and that was to be ensured, so I had to leave Afghanistan in order to present bloodshed, in order to make sure that a huge disaster (was) prevented.'

He said: 'When it comes to the political leadership of the Taliban, it was a failure on their part and a failure on our part that the negotiations did not lead to anything, the peace process should lead to the end of war.'

"I left on the advice of government officials, he added.

“Kabul should not be turned into another Yemen or Syria overpower struggles so I was forced to leave,” Ghani said.

Earlier reports had suggested that Ghani fled with $169million in his cash-stuffed helicopter and has been given asylum in Dubai on 'humanitarian grounds'.

But he said there was no truth to allegations that he escaped with 'suitcases of cash', saying it was all part of a 'personality assassination'.

“I left with just a waistcoat and some clothes. The personality assassination against me has been ongoing, saying that I have taken money with me,” Ghani said in the video.

“The accusations are baseless lies. You can even ask customs officials – they are baseless.”

President Ghani who said, he hope to return home after fleeing to the UAE, added that he supported talks between the Taliban and top former officials.

'Currently, I am in the UAE so that disasters are avoided. I'm in consultation with others until I (can) return so that I can continue my efforts for justice for the Afghans.' He noted he had 'no intention' to remain in exile.

The address comes after at least three people were killed in anti-Taliban protests in the Afghan city of Jalalabad on Wednesday as the Islamist group moved to consolidate power.

Ghani has been bitterly criticised by former ministers for leaving the country suddenly as Taliban forces entered Kabul on Sunday.

'He is no longer a figure in Afghanistan,' Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman told reporters as she declined to comment on the United Arab Emirates' decision to grant him asylum.

Politics / Leave Lagos Or Face Sanctions - State Govt Tells Beggars And Street Hawkers by Insidenaija: 8:22am On Aug 19, 2021
Lagos state government has ordered beggars and street hawkers to vacate the state or face sanctions, Newspremises report.

The sate Commissioner for Youths and Development Mr. Olusegun Dawodu, and Information and Strategy counterpart Mr. Gbenga Omotoso and Lagos State Commissioner of Police Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, gave the directive at a press conference, in Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Lagos, on Wednesday, August 18, 2021.

The conference was organized to announce the creation of a task force to ensure the eradication of street begging and hawking in the state.

Dawodu said setting up the task force became necessary to sanitize the society and restore the dignity of those who have been sent into the streets for alms begging and hawking.

The special team will commence operations “in the next few days”, the Commissioner said, adding that the plan to stop street begging was based on intelligence reports that some of the “so-called” beggars go about with dangerous weapons, assault and rob innocent Lagosians.

“The State Government will deploy a lot of human and material resources towards enlightenment and sensitisation via different media platforms. As they say, enlightenment becomes entertainment without enforcement. That is why the way to go now is to enforce compliance with the laws of our state for sanity to reign in our society.” he said.

Imploring Lagosians to take alms to recognized registered homes, orphanages, rehabilitation, and faith-based organizations, Dawodu said donations made to such places would be judiciously utilized in ameliorating the conditions of the vulnerable.

The Commissioner sought the support of religious, traditional and political leaders at various levels as well as the media for advocacy against hawking and begging, adding that all Lagosians should join forces to discourage the inhuman culture, which has the capacity to adversely affect the wellbeing of residents.

In his words:

“Street begging is a social vice that we cannot afford to watch until it attains an uncontrollable level before we act. Otherwise, all the good plans and programmes to transform our State would be adversely affected. The same goes for street hawking.

This has become big business to some groups of people. Our investigation revealed that beggars and hawkers (children and adults) are transported regularly from other parts of the country to Lagos with the sole aim of doing this odious ‘business’ that demeans humanity and abuses innocence in the case of children, who are being pushed into this degrading trade.”

Dawodu disclosed that as part of the measures being put in place to tackle the menace, the government, through the Rehabilitation and Child Development departments of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, has maintained a Rescue Unit saddled with the responsibility of rescuing and protecting the destitute and the vulnerable.

Explaining that the destitute taken off the streets will be rehabilitated in government correctional centers, the Commissioner pointed out that the team will provide treatment, psychosocial therapy, and vocational training to make those taken off the streets useful to themselves and the society.

Speaking on laws backing the decision of the Lagos State Government, Dawodu noted:

“Section 157{1(b)and(e) of the Criminal Law, 2015, describes nuisance as any person who prevents the public from having access to any part of a highway by an excessive and unreasonable use of it or does any unlawful act which causes inconveniences or damage to the public.”

He, therefore, urged those involved in the illicit business of street hawking and alms begging to desist as appropriate penalties would be applied on anyone caught flouting the law.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, said “the era of condoning street trading and alms begging on Lagos roads is over.”

Odumosu noted that the Federal and State governments would work with the Police to ensure that the roads are rid of miscreants, who hide under the guise of alms begging or street hawking to engage in crimes. He promised that all destitute persons will be taken off the streets of Lagos to ensure the continued safety of all residents.

Politics / NARD Strike: Sultan Of Sokoto Urges Resident Doctors To Return To Work by Insidenaija: 5:49pm On Aug 14, 2021
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III has urged resident doctors to suspend their industrial strike for the overall interest of the country, Newspremises reports.

Sultan also admonished the resident doctors to call off the strike in view of the devastating effects of COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreak of cholera in parts of the country.

In a statement issued by by Director of administration, NSCIA, Mr Zubairu Usman-Ugwu, in Abuja, on Saturday, August 14, 2021.

Usman-Ugwu expressed concern of its leadership on the strike which has increased the burden of vulnerable Nigerians.

NSCIA noted that the strike action would not only affects the health sector but will go against the Hippocratic Oath members of the National Association of Resident Doctors are subscribed to.

The statement added that without prejudice to the legitimacy of the demands of NARD, NSCIA urged the association to, in the spirit of the Hippocratic Oath to which members subscribed, and in consideration of the devastating effects of COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreak of cholera in some parts of the country, suspend the industrial action, while negotiation with the government continues.

He also urged the Federal Government to reconsider the moves to jettison further negotiations with the doctors, saying that the anger of the government side, no matter its basis, would not ameliorate the suffering of ordinary Nigerians that fall helpless victims of the impasse.

According to the Sultan, “The government, therefore, has to vigorously and sincerely re-engage the leadership of NARD in a manner that would inspire the confidence of the medical doctors in the negotiation.”

He noted that the Federal Government also has a duty to coordinate the responses of other tiers of government towards addressing the grievances of the doctors.

The Sultan suggested that the Ministers of Health and Labour, Osagie Ehanire and Chris Ngige to intensify negotiations with a view to finding lasting solutions to the fundamental issues raised by the doctors.
