Travel / Ilorin Airport Plane Crash: Airline Debunks Report by Insidenaija: 7:15pm On Jul 25, 2021
The management of Air Peace has debunked reports that its aircraft en-route Ilorin from Abuja had a “minimal tyre burst” after landing at the Ilorin international airport, Kwara state, Newspremises reports.

According to the Air Peace, passengers on board were “disembarked seamlessly” after the incident occurred at the airport runway.

The incident occurred Friday morning when the B737-500 aircraft with registration number 5N-BQR was taxing.

There were reports on social media that an Air Peace crash landed at the Ilorin airport as passengers escaped death.

But Air Peace, in a statement on Saturday sent to TheCable, described the report as “sensational publication of falsehood”, noting that no such incident happened.

“For the record, no such thing happened. The reports misrepresented and exaggerated the facts. We can confirm that the aircraft in question landed safely but had a minimal tyre burst while taxing,” the statement reads.

“This debunks all the mischievously headlined reports circulating online, which should be disregarded.

Our aircraft neither crashed nor crash landed in Ilorin or in any place for that matter. This kind of sensationalism is bad and was intended to cause panic in the minds of the flying public.

“It was duly reported to the authorities and passengers disembarked seamlessly. The tyres have, however, been fixed and the aircraft is intact. We condemn sensational publication of falsehood.”

Henrietta Yakubu, general manager corporate affairs of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in a text message to TheCable said the airport runway is open.

“The airport is open now. Overland Airways landed by 0521hrs,” she said.

Longe said the suspected assassins had concluded plans to strike at some locations in Karu Local Government Area of the state and eliminate some persons.

"Sequel to credible information at the disposal of the Police command, which indicated that, a group of dare-devil robbers/assassins had concluded plans to strike at some locations within Karu LGA and eliminate their victims in the process. Consequently, the Police Command raised a formidable team of detectives and operational personnel as a proactive step to prevent them from actualizing their aim and also arrest these criminal elements," Longe stated.

Politics / Hope Uzodinma: My Successor Should Probe Me If I Steal Imo Money by Insidenaija: 1:00pm On Jul 25, 2021
Imo state governor Senator Hope Uzodinma, has urged anyone who will succeed him to probe his administration if he steals the state’s patrimony, Newspremises reports.

The governor said governance is about transparency and that is what he has come to offer to Imo people and not to steal their money.

He said this while addressing a cross section of Imo stakeholders on Saturday at the Eze Imo palace in Owerri, the state’s capital.

According to him, “I have come to serve Imo people and not to steal their money.

“I have said it time without number that I would like my successor to probe my administration if I leave office.

“If I have any intention of looting Imo common patrimony, I would not have taken some of policies geared towards recovering looted funds from the past administrations.

“Let me make it abundantly clear that I will stop at nothing in recovering all Imo wealth and property forcefully converted to personal ownership by top political leaders in the state.

“In the last couple of weeks, recoveries had been made on stolen lands, buildings and assets, which were fraudulently converted to personal use by the past administration.

“Among the recovered was the former Eastern Palm University which was renamed K. O Mbadiwe University.

“You will agree with me that it was the unveiling of the white paper reports on lands that heightened insecurity in the state. We won’t go back in carrying out the report on the white paper.

“Because we want to restore sanity in governance, we have made frantic efforts to deliver to our campaign promises anchored on Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery.

“Anyone found wanton in the area of stealing or embezzling the people money, will be shown the way out.

“Note that as I recover Imo properties converted to personal ownership by those who have political power, back to Imo people, the same awaits me when I leave office. This is why I want to reiterate before that I did not become governor to be richer than the state after my tenure, but to serve you in truth and with fear of God,” he said.

Among the stakeholders that attended the meeting are the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Prof. George Obiozor; Elderstatesman Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu; former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim; Senator representing Imo North senatorial district, Frank Ibezim; Chike Okafor who is representing Okigwe South Federal Constituency; former presidential candidate of APGA, Jerry Chukwueke. Present and former members of the National Assembly, speaker and members of Imo state House of Assembly, the traditional rulers among others.

Sports / La Liga Could Block Messi From Playing For Barcelona Until January by Insidenaija: 9:45am On Jul 24, 2021
Barcelona face the possibility of not being able to register Lionel Messi for play in LaLiga until January 2022, ESPN reports.

The Catalans are looking for ways to reduce their wage bill, to align with LaLiga’s financial fair play rules.

If they can’t, they risk not being able to register Messi’s new contract or new arrivals, Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia and Emerson Royal.

Barca have until the end of the transfer window on August 31 to submit Messi’s deal and their new signings to LaLiga, but internally, the club wants everything resolved before August 15, when they kick off their league campaign at home to Real Sociedad.

The League president, Javier Tebas, is adamant he will not relax the rules for Barcelona.

A failure to get their finances in order could see Messi, if he signs the five-year deal he has already agreed, unable to play until at least January, as happened with Getafe midfielder, Pedro Leon in 2014.

Sports / Sweden Defeats U.S Women' 3-0 In Olympic Opener, Ends Their 44-game Unbeaten Run by Insidenaija: 9:09pm On Jul 21, 2021
The U.S. Women’s National Team was dealt a stunning blow in their Olympic soccer opener as they fell 3-0 to Sweden, snapping a 44-game unbeaten streak that dated back to Jan. 2019.

The USWNT is ranked No. 1 in the world and the favorites to win gold in Tokyo, but Sweden, ranked No. 5, has been the U.S. team’s nemesis of sorts in recent years.

In 2016, the Swedes eliminated the Americans from the Rio de Janeiro Games in the quarterfinals, the earliest U.S. Olympic exit ever.

A recent controversy was proven to be not all that it seemed in regards to the players turning their back either on the flag or a WWII vet playing the National Anthem, but it was clear that there was a lack of cohesion amongst the players in terms of national pride compared to the players from Mexico before that game.

One Twitter user, Clarence J Harmon, noted after today’s game, “Women’s Olympic soccer team gets beat by Sweden you didn’t see the Sweden players disrespect her anthem or their flag u.s. team has nothing to fight for anymore they will have a early exit from the Olympics.”

Trump supporter Vince Langman declared in a tweet, “Wow it’s going to be a great day Sweden just destroyed the WOKE USA women’s soccer team 3-0 in the Olympics.”

A clip shared by The Columbia Bugle showed Tobin Heath kicking the ball forward, only for it to be blocked by one of the Swedes and then ricochet back, hitting her in the face.

Heath can then be seen on the ground, writhing in pain and grabbing her face with both hands as one of the Swedes can be seen walking by.

Sports / Rashford Defends His Charity Partnerships Over Claims He ‘benefited Commercial" by Insidenaija: 4:20pm On Jul 21, 2021
Marcus Rashford has defended his off-field partnerships following claims that he profited from his campaigning, Newspremises reports.

The Manchester United and England star earned an MBE for his charitable efforts helping feed children in need throughout the last year-and-a-half.

Rashford called out the government on a number of occasions during the pandemic to ensure schoolchildren were given access to meals, which resulted in U-turns and a shift in policy, and he did a huge amount to raise funds for charity.

The forward, who was racially abused after missing a penalty in the final of Euro 2020, tweeted on Tuesday night that he had heard political magazine The Spectator was planning to run a story suggesting he has ‘benefitted commercially’ from his charity work and decided to speak against it.

"Just heard @spectator are planning to run a story on me tomorrow about how I have benefitted commercially in the last 18 months," Rashford tweeted.

"To clarify, I don't need to partner with brands. I partner because I want to progress the work I do off the pitch and most of any fee I would receive contributes to that.

"Last summer, 1.3M children had access to food support, through my relationship with Burberry children have a safe place to be after school where they will be fed, following the November investment vulnerable children have safe places to go this summer holiday, and due to my relationship with Macmillan 80,000 children now have a book to call their own.

"Do I have a larger commercial appeal following the u-turns? I'm sure. But I'm also a Manchester United and England international footballer. Why has there always got to be a motive? Why can't we just do the right thing?"

Sports / Fabrizio Romano Eases Fears As He Gives Update On Jadon Sancho Announcement by Insidenaija: 3:42pm On Jul 21, 2021
Jadon Sancho is set to join Manchester United this summer after completing a medical last week but a formal announcement from the club is yet to come, almost three weeks after the agreement between United and Borussia Dortmund was announced.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quizzed on the delay in the aftermath of their 2-1 win over Derby last week and the Norwegian boss insisted that only paperwork remained on the deal. At the time of writing, a week has passed since Sancho underwent his medical.

Fears that something has gone wrong have, however, been eased with the latest update from journalist and leading transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

“Don’t worry,” he told the Here We Go Podcast. “There are a lot of stuff behind an official announcement. Paperworks are signed, contracts are signed, Jadon Sancho is 100% a Manchester United player.”

The update will be welcomed by United supporters – no one will need reminding of the last-minute collapse of a deal to bring Paulo Dybala to Old Trafford nearly two years ago.

Sancho, along with United’s other England players involved in Euro 2020, is set to return from his three-week holiday early next month. A debut against Everton the following week has been touted as a possible introduction and an official bow against Leeds United on August 14 is expected.

Politics / Dapo Abiodun: Houses Where Cultists Live Will be Demolished, Parents Punished by Insidenaija: 7:00am On Jul 19, 2021
Ogun state governor Dapo Abiodun has threatened to demolish any house where cultists are discovered within the sate, Newspremises reports.

The Governor who vowed to deal decisively with cultists and their parents when arrested, charged parents to warn their children.

Governor Abiodun said this on Sunday, during a campaign rally at Remo North Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, local government has some individuals who engage in cultism and other acts of hooliganism.

This, Abiodun said would not be tolerated in a state he described as the industrial capital of Nigeria, stressing that government would not allow cultists to send away investors from the state.

“In this local government, I know there are some people behaving like hoodlums; they said they are cultists or so. You see, God blessed us in Ogun State with something – we are the only neighbour Lagos has. So, we are the closest to the biggest airport and the biggest seaport. That is why we are the industrial capital of Nigeria. We cannot allow a cultist or a thug to cause chaos and scare investors away from Ogun State,” it was said.

Sounding a serious note of warning, the governor emphasised that, “if I catch anybody engaging in cultism in Remo North, the person, his parents and their house will be severely dealt with.

"Any house where a cultist is discovered will be demolished. Parents should warn their children because it is going to be tough.

“Our state is adjudged the most beautiful state in this country. Without peace, there cannot be meaningful socio-economic development. So, we will deal decisively with anyone that wants to disturb our peace in this state, particularly in this local government,” the governor warned.

However, the local vigilante group got wind of the kidnapping incident, mobilised and waylaid the suspects in the bush.

It was learnt that the locals, who had been angered by the spate of kidnapping in the area, forcefully snatched the suspects from the vigilantes as they were taking them to the police station, and set them ablaze.

"The kidnappers would have been contacting the families of the abducted travellers to ask for ransom if not for the bravery of the vigilantes while locals who were fed up with the criminal activities of these kidnappers set them on fire and left to die,” a source told Tribune.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Kontongs Bello, said that investigation was ongoing.

"After the kidnap, the vigilantes went in search of the criminals who they apprehended in the bush. As they were coming out in Uokha Community on their way to the police station, angry youths in Uokha and adjoining towns took away the suspected kidnappers from the vigilantes. All efforts to get the suspects to the police proved abortive as they were burnt to death. The investigation is ongoing,” he added.

Crime / Man Goes Berserk, Stabs Wife, Pastor To Death In Imo (Video, Photos) by Insidenaija: 5:11am On Jul 19, 2021
A man identified as Obum has allegedly stabbed a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Thompson Thomas Ugochukwu Onyekuru, to death in Imo State, Newspremises reports.

The tragic incident happened at Umuokoto town in Umudibia Autonomous community in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.

Newspremises gathered that Obum, who hailed from Obowo in Imo State, stabbed his wife, Ogechi, with a knife during a bitter argument.

Obum, who is suspected to be mentally unstable, had allegedly locked his wife and her baby in their room where he stabbed her several times.

According to Daily Trust, he accused the wife of trying to kill their only surviving son out of the three children they had since they got married in 2016, claiming she was also responsible for the hardship he was facing.

An eyewitness said the incident started around 4 pm when Obum’s wife, Ogechi, and her one-year-old son were heard screaming for help. The late pastor and other neighbours waded in to prevent Obum from killing his wife.

"As the crowd intensified effort to rescue the woman, Obum with a knife, threatened to kill anyone who tried to stop his action,” one of the eyewitnesses told the publication.

After successfully rescuing the woman from her husband’s grip, Obum became enraged and started chasing everybody with the blood-stained knife. As Onyekuru made to go, Obum stabbed him at the back.

A passing police patrol team was called to the scene, but he attacked the policemen who were attempting to arrest him. The police then shot him in the leg in order to subdue him.

Obum and Onyekuru were subsequently taken to the hospital where two of them died. Unconfirmed report said Obum's wife also later died.
