Hello, i suggest you concetrate on SQL and PL/SQL and also read An Introduction to Database Systems by CJ Date, as per datawarehousing and data mining you can find a ton of materials on the Oracle Documentation site, as per the marketability in NIgeria, i honestly dont know.
but there is a school of thought that pl/sql is gradually getting phased out in favour of java.

My own question @slyr0x is: how secure is encrypting url variables?
I am not saying that you should not do it. But i feel that putting secure data into url is not safe at all,
whether encrypted or not - just my own opinion sha.

Another thing again is that - it is a rather time-consuming process, encoding, decoding. . .i think the focus
should be more of preventing unauthorized access.

@slyrox, i will like to hear your professional views on this.
how do u run queries dat need to be passed via url? Eg news.php?id=1
sensitive data esp ones dat have to do with authentition can be passed via sessions (which might also need encryption). Yahoo, google use it.
My background in coldfusion further butresses my point. Encryption is not a sure-footed path to absolute protection, but and added security layer with a little more resource on the server footed path to absolute protection, but and added security layer with a little more resource on the server

@dhtml
uve made valid points. But one'd be amazed at so many factors of vulnerabily. Some could be prevented eg
1. Hiding apache's output signature
2. Removing phpinfo() calls
3. Using escape shellarg() fxn to prevent shell commands from executing.
And so much more,

@Pheeque

This thread is not for a typical quasi Nigerian programmer like you.Do you know what they call the guys at facebook and google-engineers.these guys dont just write trivial codes or html;they write intelligent codes that makes the world a better place.let me tell you how to get work at facebook,go and search facebook puzzles,it contains about 25 algorithmically inclined problems,if you can solve those,you will be hired.then we have google codejam and topcoder.the ide and tools that you use,you think that they were coded with html,what about softwares that enterprise uses like bank softwares,management software and the rest.you dont belong here,get off this thread.
Easy bro, web apps exist everywhere. ERP's , Banking Solutions (intranet) etc use web based apps. I just think the guy is looking at his immediate environment where complex programming is not really valued.
That being said, dont think like a local programmer, look up to international standards.
ProgrammingRe: What Is The Future Of Nigeria's Software Industry? by instinctg(m): 10:09am On Jul 25, 2011
Go ask any academic scholar, engineer, lawyer, doctor and what have you about the future of their careers in Nigeria , they will answer similarly like any programmer will do.
The reason is not far-fetched, once a country spends over 70% on its recurrent expenditure, then what would be left for development? Think of the economic leakage in the political circle and the redundancy in the civil service.
When most graduates are thronging the streets unemployed, then what do u expect? Our best brains have always been checking out in droves, hence u hear brain drain.
In all, i still believe in this country, its only us that can make it work.

In as much as hosting companies claim to take regular backups of your database, its better u take your destiny in your hands. That is, manual backup of database . If granted by your hosting company, u can also take batch processes to automate database backup.

@instinctg & worldbest
I dont agree that the average web app development contract is cheap or that jobs are scarce. It depends on the programmer. I started from nairaland looking out for every opportunity to get a contract here, that was when jobs were scarce and clients didn't pay much. I looked up to dhtml, yawa and dual (yes, they started php way b4 me) to answer my questions here when i get stuck.
But for every single job i get, i created a standard, a reason for clients to come back.

I once called dhtml to handle a shopping cart for my client and he gave a non negotiable price of N500kMy heart skipped. Even though the client agreed to pay him, dhtml no get time and he didn't even do the job(Reason y i don't call him 4 jobs again).
*Edit: DHTML No collect money from the guy anyway but me loose my share.

That single incident with dhtml made me change my coding and pricing. Right now, the minimum price that can make me touch my mouse is 100k(for websites) and i have commercial web applications(EDBMS) that have been sold  and is still being sold in seven digits. I am a programmer, and i can tell you there's no easier way to make your first 1 million naira than in programming (if you rank among the best).
@ lojik, you made a good point, but not totally valid. I still insist that so many clients out there feel there is no reason to have a website or software application.
When they seem to agree to have one, they price cheaply cos they see it as luxury and they also perceive the industry is saturated with "programmers" so they seem to settle for less.
But i totally agree that with some one having an impressive portfolio like yours should really have no issues per se. grin
WebmastersRe: What I Hate About Nigerian Web Developers by instinctg(m): 11:09am On Jul 11, 2011
My take is that, an average programmer should be very passionate about coding. at least from the start. but one reason nigerian programmers are supposedly lazy (which i dont fully agree with), is that you can not put so much resources in a career/ project and be happy to come out with nothing much to show 4it.
point is, how much does an average web project cost these days? How long does it take you to secure another client? Looking at the reality at hand, anybody (Nigerian or otherwise) might see it as quite discouraging.
So the guy asks himself, why go learn the all these languages with varying learning curves, putting enormous time and resources when the return on investment is quite low?
Point is, if the industry is much more lucrative, an average Nigeria programmer would be head high above his peers. He ll do everything to be the best, trust me on that.
My conclusion still evolves around passion and i recall an adage that goes thus "if u say education is xpensive, then try ignorance !" So let's keep the march on, we'll surely get there.
WebmastersRe: Pls Help Me Friends by instinctg(m): 4:14pm On Jul 01, 2011
to start with, web development can be divided into various categories.

1st. Web Design (Front end) : this includes what we see including visuals, animations, page design etc. The tools/languages used for these includes xhtml, css, fireworks, photoshop, flash etc

2nd. Scripting languages: some do it middleware languages. they communicate with the front end and backend of web applications. Such languages include ColdFusion , Php, Ruby and asp.net.

3rd. Database: this is where information resides. You might have heard about Oracle, MySql etc.

In conclusion, see a web designer as someone proficient in the front end languages as ealier stated and a web programmer as someone proficient usually in scripting languages and database management.
