Are you talking about practicing or becoming a full-fledged MD? The apprentice fixing your brake pad is already practicing but is not considered a full-fledged mechanic. The value of a resident physician (still considered an apprentice/student under the auspices of an attending physician by the way) is attached to his salary which is peanuts compared to medical doctors. Residents are not qualified to write all orders especially controlled substances, invasive procedures AND their orders are usually double-checked through their attending. Now if s/he is a fellow, it is a different ball game.

The earlier the better sef .
The closer you are to your year of graduation , the better it is for your application.

One can even begin to write US licensing exams from medical school before graduation.
My classmate from medical school left to start residency immediately after house job in 2021. He didn’t even finish his last posting before he left .
He is now an attending and about to start his fellowship training in another hospital .

Naira land used to be a place filled with really knowledgeable people.

Every country is different.
With a medical degree from Nigeria, you will need at least 5 years (assuming the candidate is very intelligent) to practice as a doctor in US. They have the same stringent rules whether you are coming from UK or Australia.

Other healthcare professionals can present their degrees from Nigeria and challenge the Board exams if they meet the prerequisites. Sometimes it is easier and cheaper to study those courses in Nigeria
