Culture › What you need to know about Argungu Festival by ipledge10(op):
Argungu Fishing Festival is one of the major festival celebrated annually to mark the end of the centuries-old hostility between the Sokoto caliphate region and the Kebbi kingdom in the northern part of Nigeria.

The festival was initiated in the year 1934 in Argungu, Kebbi State. The Argungu Fishing Festival is an annual 4 days event in Kebbi State, Nigeria. It is mostly celebrated in the month of February after the end of all farming activities.

The festival started initially in the form of religious rites as an informal family and communal affair. The Argungu festival has undergone several changes and modifications which makes the event more stylish and developed.

More than 30,000 fisherman had taken part in the annual Argungu fishing festival. The main event of the festival is the fishing contest in river Mata Fada, where fishing nets and traditional gourds made with calabashes are been used. The fisherman who catches the biggest fish wins a prize of $7500. In the year 2005 the winner caught a fish weighing 75kg, that is the biggest fish that have been caught in the festival till date.

The evolution of the festival at Argungu seems to go hand with the socio economic development of the people of Kebbi.

The fishing festival has become an international event in which people from Africa, Europe, America and other continents would converge in the ancient town of Argungu to witness the festival every year. The festival was taken over by the Kebbi State Government because of its growing popularity and economic potentials.
Gen. Yakubu Gowon together with Alh. Diori Hammani of Niger Republic were the first head of states to attend the Argungu festival in the 1970. Since then the festival has been visited by all presidents of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The festival also attracts governors from different states in the country most especially the northern states governors.

Argungun festival is currently one of the most popular festivals in Nigeria which attracts tourist all over the world. If you want to visit Nigeria, try and visit around February, spending at least a week Argungu during the fishing festival will give moments to always remember.

SAREE DRAPING STYLES

There are over eighty was to drape saree, Nivi is the most popular among them. I am going to write how about seven most popular draping styles.

Nivi:It is easy to drape in nivi style, start by tucking in one end of the saree inside the skirt from right to left, until one full round, make sure the saree fall on the floor. Pick the other end of the saree and make pallu pleats, and clamp the pallu pleats. Take the pleated pallu over the left shoulder, pin neatly with the help of a pin. Now focus on the other end of the saree. From the left, tuck inside the skirt toward the right side of the waist, and make 6 to 7 pleats, tuck it I'm facing the left. Hold the pleats and make sure you them together.

Bengali: To drape Bengali style, you tuck the saree in from the right side of the waist, one full round back to the right. Then tuck the saree in the reverse way i.e from the left to right, and repeat the step two times. Make pallu pleats, place the pallu on the left shoulder, pick the pallu end and tie trinket to it. Bring the pallu corner to the front, under right and place on the right shoulder

Gujarati: Like any normal style, tuck the saree from right to left, then take it forward, make 6 t0 7 pleats out of it, and tuck it in facing the right side. Take the pallu end , and make pallu pleats, clamp the pleats. Then take it around from the back over the right shoulder and bring to the front. Pin the pallu on the right shoulder with the help of a pin, then pin the hanging pleat to the left side of your waist.

Marathi: Leaving a yard from one end of the saree, take few inches from both sides, tie a double knot around the waist center. Hold the shorter end of the bottom, take it back from in between your legs and tuck it in the center of the back. Take the untied portion of the saree, and make 5 to 6 pleats, tuck them in the center facing left. Make 4 to 5 pallu pleats, secure the pallu with the help of a safety pin. Take the pleats from the back to the front, and place it over the left shoulder, pin the pallu neatly on the left shoulder.

Lenhenga: Start by tucking the saree from the center back to the right of the waist. Start making pleats, make 5 pleats in between the left and the right side of the waist. Tuck it in at the center back so that it complete one round around the waist to the starting point. Take the pallu and make pallu pleats, use clamp to secure the pleats, take the pallu to the front and place it on the right shoulder, and pin it neatly. Hold the lower corner of the pallu and take it left top on to the sideway and pin it.

Romance › Salsa Dance by ipledge10(op): 4:07pm On Sep 21, 2016
Salsa dance is a popular social dance which became popular in New York City in the early 70s with strong influences from Latin America, particularly Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Cuba. Today Salsa Dance is a worldwide phenomenon thrilling both club and professional dancers.

The word "salsa" literally means sauce, which indicates the mixing of various ingredients to obtain a new and rich sauce, this can be noticed in the dance itself as Salsa is a mix of various stepping to create a beautiful dance. Salsa dance as a term refers to a variety of Hispanic musical styles: Rhumba, Són, Són Montuno, Danzón, Guaracha, Mambo, Guguanco, Cubop, Cha Cha Cha, Guajira, Charanga, Cumbia, Plena, Festejo, Merengue , Bomba among others.

Due to this mix it can therefore be concluded that not one single culture or group of people can take the credit for the emergence of Salsa dance.

When talking about the histoy of Salsa dance it is a bit difficult to pinpoints its actual origin though, Salsa dance has some roots in Cuba, where the African rhythms brought there by slaves mixed with various forms of popular Spanish music, that resulted in a number of different styles.

Salsa dance spread from New York City to Cuba and Puerto Rico where it continued its development and evolution, this spread produced possibly the best salsa musicians and dancers in the world. Salsa dancers followed along with the development of salsa dance, adding more moves depending on their experience and professionalism. Some salsa styles are very fast, almost frenetic, with whirling moves, while others seem more relaxed and sensual with elements of Argentine tango or slow rhumba in them.

This spread of the Salsa dance across the Caribbean also initiated a 2 way cultural exchange between the Caribbean and the States which is very much alive till date.

This gives a clear image of salsa as an international dance which exploded far beyond its original roots in the 'Caribbean' borders. Top bands nowadays from Puerto Rico as well as Senegal Japan, Senegal, France and even Finland dance Salsa.

Salsa competitions are at times won by 'western' and even Asian dancers showing the global popularity of the dance. This is nothing but a natural result of the widespread development of any form of art.

Just like a tree Salsa Dance has many roots and many branches, but a single trunk which unites them. The important thing about the dance is that Salsa is played throughout the Hispanic world and has received influences of many places within it. Salsa dance is of us all and it is a sample of our flexibility and evolution
