A total of 188 students of Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State, on Friday graduated with first class degree at the 2016/2017 convocation ceremony of the university.

Prof. Aaron Atayero, the Vice-Chancellor (VC), disclosed this during the 12th Convocation Ceremony and Conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and presentation of prizes in Ota.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 1,426 students graduated this academic session.

They comprised 188 with first class honours degree, 568 with second class upper honours, 322 with second class lower, 47 with third class and 301 post graduate students.

Atayero said the university had trained a set of “expert thinkers and world changers” that had the ability to thrive in adversity and contribute their quotas to national development.

The VC said that the institution was a foremost private university in Nigeria, setting the pace for other public and private institutions.

“Covenant University has continued to be at the cutting edge of innovation and research in proffering solutions to the nation’s challenges,’’ he said.

Dr David Oyedepo, the University Chancellor, said that the 2016 edition of the Nigerian Graduate Report ranked the products of the institution as the most employable graduates among all Nigerian universities.

Oyedepo said that most of the nation’s challenges needed indigenous solutions rather than foreign ones.

He said that the nation found itself where it was by choice, adding that it was time individual and leaders took the responsibility of solving the nation’s problems.

“Education would enhance such initiative in solving the nation’s challenges because it cannot give what we do not have in solving our problems,’’ he said.

A court in Lagos has adjourned Nigeria notorious kidnapper Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a. Evans case till July 27, 2017.

Hearing has been further adjourned till July 27, 2017 in the N300m fundamental rights enforcement suit filed against the Inspector-General of Police by suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a. Evans.

Justice Chuka Obiozor declined entertaining the case on Thursday on the basis that Evans’ lawyer, Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, had yet to pay the punitive cost of N20,000 awarded against him at the last adjourned date.

Justice Abdulaziz Anka, who awarded the punitive cost against Ogungbeje on July 13, had said the lawyer would not be given audience in court until he paid the N20,000 to the police.

On Thursday, counsel for the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Effiong Asuquo, noted that Ogungbeje gave him a post-dated cheque for N20,000 but he rejected it, saying that was not the order of court.

Justice Obiozor agreed with the police lawyer and directed Ogungbeje to comply with the cost order on the cost awarded against him.

The judge also directed Ogungbeje to ensure service of the application on the Inspector-General of Police in Abuja.

He, subsequently, adjourned the case till July 27.

35-years old Omolabake Adenle has launched the very first African language app under the SpeakAfricaApps project.

Omolabake Adenle is the founder of Aja.la Studios, a company that builds natural language & speech processing applications for African languages.

She holds a PhD in Bayesian Signal Processing from Cambridge University where she was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fllow and Tau Beta Pi Honors Fellow.

She had been shortlisted for the Innovation Prize for Africa for her voice recognition and speech synthesis software for African languages, a software that can understand and digitize spoken African languages.

Her software will not only help newer generations learn languages that are slowly dying, but will also afford those who speak only their local languages enjoy the benefits of the digital revolution – just imagine a voice assistant (Siri, Google Now) that can take instructions in and speak Yoruba.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has reacted to criticisms trailing his recent pronouncement on steps being taken by the government to discourage the production of Nigerian movies and music outside the country.

In a chat with PREMIUM TIMES, on Sunday, he said it was to tackle the exploitation of perceived loopholes in the Nigerian Broadcasting Code, NBC. “The NBC code today as it stands has been exploited and not defined and that’s why movies being directed by Nigerians with Nigerian actors, actresses can be shot in South Africa and then brought back to be consumed in Nigeria.

All we are saying is that we are going to amend the code in a manner that it will not be possible for you to exploit any loophole there to go and shoot outside Nigeria film, music or programs that are meant to be consumed in Nigeria,” Mr. Mohammed said. .

Mr. Mohammed on Saturday said the government had taken steps to get the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, NBC to put an end to the trend of producing Nigerian music, movie and programs abroad. .

This however drew criticism from Nigerians who asked the minister to address the issue of government officials going for medical treatment abroad first before sanitising the movie industry. .

However, the minister said the government had no ill-feeling in its move to dissuade Nigerian films from being produced abroad. “It is not directed at any particular incident, every country should respect the local industry of other countries. .

For example, in Ghana they introduced a law today that demands visiting actors to pay a thousand dollars to the government coffers while visiting directors and producers pay 5,000 dollars. .

We must create an enabling environment and also generate revenue from our creative industry. The argument is simple, when you go to shoot a film offshore, you use the work force of that country to develop the capacity of that country and you improve the economy of that country and that is what we are trying to do here.”

The result of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Senior School Certificate Examination has been released on Monday, July 17. The information was released via the official twitter page of the exam body.

According to the report, 1,567,016 candidates registered for the examination, out of which 1,559,162 candidates sat the examination.

Of those that wrote the examination, 923,486 candidates, representing. 59.22%, obtained minimum of credits in 5 subjects & above, including English Language and Mathematics. This performance is better than for 2015 and 2016 where it was 38.68% and 52.97%, respectively.

He said: “Out of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, 1,471,151 candidates, representing 94.36 per cent, have their results fully processed and released, while 95,734 candidates, representing 5.64 per cent, have a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination.

“Such errors are being corrected by the Council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released.”

The exam body has promised that the result would be released on or before July 19.

The early release of results is part of WAEC's new strategy tagged 'Project 60' which is aimed at improving the standard of service delivery in the educational sector.

Lagos and Abuja ranked 29th and 59th respectively as the most expensive cities to live in a 2017 global cost of living survey. The 23rd Cost of Living Survey carried out by Mercer, the world’s largest human resource consulting firm.

According to the survey, Lagos ranked 13th while Abuja ranked 20th in 2016.

The capital city of Angola, Luanda, however, ranked first globally moving up from second place and taking over from Hong Kong as the world’s most expensive city.

The survey attributed the cost of goods and security as factors that determined the cost of living in Luanda.

Other African cities that ranked high reflected high living costs and prices of goods for expatriate employees.

They include Victoria, Seychelles in the 14th position, N’djamena, Chad in the 16th position and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo ranked 18th.

The least expensive African cities include Gaborone, Botswana in the 196th position; Cape Town, South Africa ranking 199th and Blantyre, Malawi ranking 205th.

Windhoek, Namibia ranked 206 while Tunis, Tunisia ranked 209 and was found to be the least expensive country globally.

In Europe, three cities remained in the top 10 list of most expensive cities for expatriates, which included Zurich, Geneva, and Bern which ranked fourth, seventh and 10th respectively.

Moscow ranked 14th and London ranked 30th position and the German cities of Munich, Frankfurt, and Berlin dropped significantly ranking 98, 117 and 120 respectively.

Also, five of the top 10 expensive cities in the ranking were in Asia; Hong Kong ranked second and was found to be the most expensive city in the region as a result of its currency pegged to the US dollar, which drove up the cost of accommodations locally.

Others are Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul, and Shanghai which ranked third, fifth, sixth and eighth respectively.

Ms Nathalie Constantin-Métral, Principal at Mercer responsible for compiling the survey ranking, explained that the majority of Chinese cities fell in the ranking due to the weakening of the Chinese yuan against the U.S. dollar.

In India, Mumbai ranked 57, moving up 25 places due to its rapid economic growth, inflation on the goods and services basket and a stable currency against the U.S. Dollar.

New Delhi and Chennai ranked 99 and 135 respectively.

In the Middle East, Tel Aviv ranked 17 and continues to be the most expensive city for expatriates followed by Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh ranking 20, 23 and 52 respectively.

Jeddah ranked 117, Muscat ranked 92 and Doha ranked 81 and are among the least expensive cities in the region.

The survey found that cities in the U.S. were the most expensive locations in the Americas.

New York City ranked ninth as the costliest city; San Francisco ranked 22nd and Los Angeles 24th.

Constantin-Métral said, “Overall, U.S. cities either remained stable in the ranking or have slightly increased due to the movement of the U.S. dollar against the majority of currencies worldwide.

The Canadian city of Vancouver ranked 107, overtaking Toronto which ranked 119, to become the most expensive Canadian city in the ranking. Ottawa was found to be the least expensive city in Canada ranking 152.

“The Canadian dollar has appreciated in value triggering the major jumps in this year’s ranking,” explained Constantin-Métral.

Mercer’s 23rd annual Cost of Living Survey finds that factors like the instability of housing markets and inflation for goods and services contribute to the overall cost of doing business in today’s global environment.

The survey is designed to help multinational companies and governments determine compensation allowances for their expatriate employees.

Suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate that abducted six students from the Igbonla Model college in Epe, Lagos state on May 25th, have written to the management and staff of Lagos State Model College, Kankon, Badagry in Lagos state, vowing to kidnap some of their principals and students of the school.

According to reports, the kidnappers sent the letters to the junior and secondary school principals of the school two weeks ago.

They pasted the letters on the door leading to the administrative offices of both principals. The letters which contained the same message, read in part

"Kidnappers are visiting the school the same way we did at Igbonla, Epe. We are going to capture three pupils from senior school and three from junior school. We are kidnapping both principals. We are coming in two days time. No security put in place will stop us from gaining entry and fulfilling our mission as stated in this letter. Be expecting us".
The school management called for security and there was maximum protection in the school.

However this reportedly reduced after a while. Parents and students of the school are currently in fear due to the reduction in security personnel in the school. Meanwhile the state commissioner for Information, Steve Ayorinde, has confirmed that indeed a letter of such was received but however added that the state government is not certain it was a joke or not.

He added that efforts have been put in place to ensure the safety of the students in the school. Recall that the suspected kidnappers of six male students at the Igbonla Model College in Epe, had earlier written to the school informing them of their attack before carrying it out on May 25th. The students have still not been rescued.

A 57-year-old man, Aminu Ibrahim, was on Wednesday re-arraigned before a Jos Upper Area Court for allegedly luring am eight-year-old girl into his shop with 50 kobo and Viju milk drink before raping her.

Ibrahim of Goda Sagai community in the Jos North Local Government Area was charged with criminal intimidation and rape. The accused was previously arraigned on May 26 this year. The Police Prosecutor, Insp. E.A. Inegbenoise, of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, had told court that the mother of the victim reported the matter at the Nasarawa Gwong Divisional Police Headquarters on April 26.

Inegbeniose said that the accused lured the girl into his shop with 50 kobo and Viju milk drink and then raped her. He said that the mother of the child noticed that her daughter was walking with difficulty, which made the victim to tell her mother what had happened to her.

The prosecutor said that the victim told her mother that the accused said he would kill her if she told anyone. He said the girl, thereafter, led her parents to the shop of the accused and identified a bench he used during the raping. Inegbenoise said that during police investigation, the accused confessed to having committed the crime.

The accused, who was previously on remand was granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 with a surety in like sum. This was after his counsel, Mr. David Adudu, prayed the court to grant his client bail. Adudu in his prayer, claimed that the accused was hypertensive and needed medical supervision.

He assured that if the bail was granted, his client would neither jump bail nor interfere with police investigation. But the prosecutor prayed court to deny the bail application as there were qualified medical doctors in prisons, who could take care of inmates with health challenges.

Inegbenoise also argued that owing to the nature of the crime, the offence was not bailable, unless under special circumstances. The Judge, Mr. J.Yahaya, however, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of 200, 000 and a surety in like sum.

Yahaya said that the surety must be a ward head, residing within the jurisdiction of the court. However, the case which was assigned for continuation of hearing could not hold as judges of the lower courts are currently on strike. The matter was adjourned to July 21 for continuation of hearing.

The Borno State Police Command, on Monday, confirmed that 17 persons were killed in multiple bomb attacks on Sunday night by Boko Haram terrorists at a village near Maiduguri, the state capital.

The Police disclosed that the attacks also left 11 persons injured. According to the statement, five female bombers detonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) strapped to their bodies at about 8.30pm at Kofa community along Maiduguri-Konduga Road, some eight kilometers from the state capital.

"The first suicide bomber detonated the IED near a mosque, killing seven persons. The second detonated in a house killing five persons. While two other suicide bombers detonated within the same vicinity, killing themselves. A total of 17 persons, including the five suicide bombers, died, while 11 persons sustained injuries and were rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH)," the statement said.

After setting an ultimatum of 3 months for the Igbos to vacate the coalition of Northern youth groups have written to the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to allow the Igbos “actualize their dream” of the sovereign nation of Biafra.

The letter has stated that the coalition feels “it is risky” for the North to go on “pretending like it is safe” to cohabitate with the Igbos in Nigeria.

According to Vanguard, the letter was signed by Shettima Yerima, Joshua Viashman, Aminu Adam, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, and Nastura Ashir Sharif.

Though we do not doubt Your Excellency’s bona fide concerns for the peaceful resolution of the crises, we nevertheless have reservations as to the efficacy of this approach in ensuring lasting solutions.

Our doubts are informed by the following historical antecedents that have characterized the behavior and conduct of the Igbo in Nigeria and previous efforts at containing them.

The Igbo of Eastern Nigeria manifested their hatred for Nigeria’s unity barely five years after we gained our independence from the British when on January 15, 1966, their army officers carried out the first-ever mutiny that marked the beginning of a series of crisis which has profoundly altered the course of Nigeria’s history.

By that ill motivated cowardly and deliberate action, the Igbo killed many northern officers from the rank of lieutenant colonel upwards and also decapitated the Prime Minister and the political leadership of the Northern and Western regions but left the zenith of Igbo leadership at the Federal level and the Eastern region intact. “In line with the Igbo plan, General Aguiyi-Ironsi took advantage of the vacuum and, instead of returning power to the remnants of the First Republic government, he appropriated the coup and attempted to consolidate it for his people.

Army officers of the Northern Region were eventually compelled to execute a counter coup on July 29, 1966 following a coordinated series of brazen provocations from the Igbo who taunting northerners on northern streets by mocking the way leaders of the region were slain by the Igbo. This unfortunately resulted in mob action which resulted in the death of many Igbos.

And when Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon, from the North took over as Head of State following the counter coup, the Igbo through Lt. Col. Ojukwu, characteristically refused to recognize Gowon.

Ojukwu declared the secession of the Igbo people from Nigeria and the formation of the republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967 resulting in a civil war that led to the tragic deaths of more than 2 million Nigerians.

Concerned by the fact that the Biafrans have confessed to arming themselves for a violent breakup, we feel that it is risky for the rest of the country particularly the North to go on pretending that it is safe for us to co habitate with the Igbos given how deeply they are entrenched in our societies .

And since evidently the Igbo have not been sufficiently humbled by their self imposed bloody civil violence of 1966, we are strongly concerned that nothing short of granting their Biafran dream will suffice.

And since the Igbo have virtually infiltrated every nook and cranny of Northern Nigeria where they have been received with open arms as fellow compatriots, we strongly believe that the region is no longer safe and secure in the light of the unfolding threats and the fact that for a long time, the Igbo have gone to extra ordinary lengths to ensure that in their domain in the South East, Northerners and Westerners are as much as possible disenfranchised from owning any businesses whereas in Kano alone, they own not less than 100, 000 shops across all the business districts.

That since the younger generation of Nigerians makes up for more than 60 per cent of the nation’s population, it is our hope that they inherit this country in better shape so that they can build a much better future for themselves and their offsprings in an atmosphere that is devoid of anarchy, hate, suspicion and negativity that characterize the polarized, and clearly irreconcilable differences forced on us by the Biafran Igbos.

As the Igbo agitations persist and assume threatening dimensions, we submit that there is need to ensure that they are given the opportunity to exercise the right to self-determination as entrenched under the aforementioned international statutes to which Nigeria is a signatory.

Aware that the right of self-determination in international law is the legal right for a “people” that allows them to attain a certain degree of autonomy from a sovereign state through a legitimate political process, we strongly demand for a referendum to take place in a politically sane atmosphere where all parties will have a democratic voice over their future and the future of the nation.

The Igbo from all over the country and in the Diaspora should be advised to converge in their region in the South-East for a plesbisite to be organized and conducted by the United Nations and other regional bodies for them to categorically to decide between remaining part of Nigeria or having their separate country.

That government should at the end of the plebiscite implement whatever is agreed and resolved in order to finally put this matter to rest.

Lastly, we pray His Excellency to study the references forwarded with this letter dispassionately and decide who is more in the wrong between those who openly pledge allegiance to a country other than Nigeria backing it up with persistent threats of war and those of us whose allegiance remains with the Nigerian state but simply urge that the secessionists be allowed to actualize their dream peacefully throw universally entrenched democratic options.

Nigerian track and field athlete Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor mistakenly lets her wig fall off during a long jump.

This happened during Oslo Diamond League on Thursday evening. She made sure she was behind the board, landed nicely and then... her wig fell off.

Not one to show what must have been considerable embarrassment at the unfortunate incident, the Nigerian simply waited for her mark to be measured (6.21m) before picking up the hairpiece and proceeding to slip it back into place.
