Foreign Affairs / Turkey Blocks Citizen From Accessing Wikipedia by IratzsMicheal(m): 6:02pm On Apr 29, 2017
Turkey has blocked Wikipedia – the online encyclopedia – for articles and comments that suggested the country was in cooperation with “terror groups”.

Turkish officials had been in contact with the website various times and requested the content in question be removed, state-run Anadolu Agency quoted the ministry of transport, maritime and communications as saying.

The report said the site refused to remove the content in question, however.
Wikipedia “has started acting as part of the circles who carry out a smear campaign against Turkey in the international arena, rather than being cooperative in fight against terror”, ministry officials were quoted as saying.

The website tried to show Turkey “at the same level and in cooperation with terror groups”, the report said.

A block affecting all language editions of Wikipedia in Turkey was detected at about 05:00GMT after an administrative order by Turkish authorities, the Turkey Blocks monitoring group, which watches internet restrictions in the country, said in a statement.
Other websites, including leading social media, appeared to be working normally.
Turkey has become notorious over the last few years for temporarily blocking access to popular sites, including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, in the wake of major events such as mass protests or bomb attacks.

In March 2014, YouTube was banned for several months in Turkey after the site was used to broadcast purported footage of a security meeting on Syria. In the summer of 2013, severe restrictions were imposed on social media during mass anti-government protests.

Reports of block on VPNs
Savvy internet users frequently resort to the use of VPNs to get around these bans, although there have been complaints that these too have also started to be blocked.

The government says such measures are always temporary and are needed for national security reasons, but critics see the blocks as further restrictions on civil liberties under President ‘s rule.

In November 2016, Turkey imposed temporary restrictions lasting several hours on the messaging service WhatsApp as well as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other sites following the controversial arrests of pro-Kurdish MPs.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim then acknowledged that “from time to time for security reasons we can use such measures… These are temporary measures. Once the danger is passed, everything returns to normal.”

The move to block Wikipedia caused an uproar on social media in Turkey with users angrily denouncing the decision to restrict access to one of the world’s most popular websites.

Celebrities / Why I Don’t Wear Bra – Nollywood Actress Reveals by IratzsMicheal(m): 5:51pm On Apr 29, 2017
Nollywood actress, Feyisara Hassan has in a recent chat revealed that being a Baby Mama is more fruitful and fulfilling compared to being a wife.

The actress who recently turned 24 on Wednesday, 26th April 2017 and has five movies under her belt told Vanguard in a recent chat that she sees baby mamas as better compared to wives.

Speaking regarding her acting career and her journey as a young movie producer, the actress opened up on all there is to know, she further opened up on why she doesn’t favour wearing of bras.

Read excerpts from the interview below:

When asked what came make her become a babymama, she said:

“What most people don’t know is that being a babymama is even better than being a wife.

Frankly, I am not against any woman opting to be a babymama, in fact I believe it is good and more peaceful. Being a babymama you enjoy the father of your baby more than if he were your husband.

You can have access to him whenever and wherever you want without any family pressures or restrictions. When you are a wife, there are limitations and restrictions and there’s little room for heartaches. More women are opting to be babymamas because their lives are more peaceful and enjoyable.”

You once said you don’t wear bra, can you explain why?

“Yes, I don’t wear bras because I don’t feel comfortable with it but I do wear it now because my man is not comfortable with my not wearing it. I guess it is because of my sexy boobs.”

But they are not big?

“They may not be big but they are very special. They are one of the most beautiful parts I love in my body. Medium boobs are sexy and more attractive than the big ones. All kinds of boobs are good though but mine are more attractive and sexy.”

What’s your take on sex generally?

“In my opinion and experience, sex is best experienced within a committed relationship where two people have agreed to be exclusive with each other and to explore their sexualities together. This doesn’t have to be within marriage. However, in my opinion, relationships should not exist solely to provide a means for sex. Relationships should be a beautiful tapestry, of which sex is one piece.

And within that relationship, sex should only exist with an incredible amount of communication. The communication should be about when people are ready for different stages of sex, what people like and dislike in sex, and at the core of all this communication should be consent. Our society talks about and does consent very poorly (which is why we have such a high rate of sexual violence).”

Why are Yoruba films so poorly subtitled?

“It depends on the editors; we have good and bad ones. Another reason is that some bad producers find it difficult to pay editors good money. So, what they got is what they paid for.”

Finally, what are your biggest dreams as an actress?

“One of my biggest dreams is to become a musician. But all in all my biggest dream is to do what nobody has done in the industry. “

Sports / Granada Relegated From La Liga by IratzsMicheal(m): 4:24pm On Apr 29, 2017
Saturday’s defeat brought an end to Granada’s run of six straight seasons in the Spanish top flight.
Adrian Ramos scored Granada's first goal under interim boss Tony Adams on Saturday but a 2-1 defeat at Real Sociedad relegated them after a six-year stay in the top flight.

Granada had lost their three previous games since the former Arsenal defender Adams replaced the sacked Lucas Alvarez, conceding seven goals in the process.

Carlos Vela had slotted Sociedad in front from Mikel Oyarzabal's cross a minute before half-time.

Despite succumbing to an inevitable relegation they did salvage some pride as Ramos was given acres of space to head home Dimitri Foulquier's delivery.

However, Sociedad got the win they needed to boost their push for a Europa League place when Juanmi raced onto Sergio Canales's lovely scooped pass to fire home the winner seven minutes from time.

Granada will join the already relegated Osasuna in the Segunda Division next season with Sporting Gijon almost certain to follow after their defeat at Villarreal on Friday.

Politics / Nigeria Moving Out Of Recession – Lai Mohammed by IratzsMicheal(m): 3:28pm On Apr 29, 2017
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said the country was gradually moving out of recession.

Mohammed, who was represented by the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Bayo Onanuga, said this on Saturday at the biennial convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Lagos.

He said that going by a recent statement by the Central Bank Governor, the country would exit recession by the end of June.

“There have been other pointers for the good news as well. For two consecutive months, the National Bureau of Statistics has also reported a fall in inflation rate.

“The exchange rate is regaining some sanity.
http://newscantell..com.ng/2017/04/nigeria-moving-out-of-recession-lai.html
“As I said earlier, the worst appears to be over. We are clawing out of the woods of recession in weeks from now.

“I hope, in our various media, we shall begin to focus more on the positive developments in our economy, the growth in agriculture and mineral development, since the NBS last year, let out the secret that the Nigerian economy recorded a negative growth in the first quarter of 2016,” he said.

Mohammed said the recession was not peculiar to Nigeria.

He said that the United States of America had experienced 47 recessions, some regressing into depressions.

“Between 1980 and 2007 alone, the American economy experienced five recessions. The last one in 2007 was caused by the subprime mortgage crisis and led to the collapse of the US housing bubble,” he said.

The minister urged the media to inform Nigerians on the efforts being made to end the recession.

“Informing the people that the government is working hard to end the recession will go a long way to give hope to the people.

“After all, it is said that ‘if you keep hope alive, it will keep you alive’” the minister said.

Crime / Herdsmen Invade Soyinka’s Residence by IratzsMicheal(m): 3:54pm On Apr 28, 2017
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka on Friday said herdsmen have again invaded his home in Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria. Last year while he was away from the country, herdsmen attacked Soyinka’s home.

Narrating his ordeal then, the Nobel laureate said, he returned to “find that my home ground had been invaded, and a brand-new “Appian way” sliced through my sanctuary. That ‘motorable’ path was made by the hoofed invaders. Both the improvised entry and exit are now blocked.”

Soyinka who said “we are living in dangerous time,” stated that the attack was life-threatening and alarming as his home and that of his neighbours were invaded by the herdsmen, adding that he had reported the matter to the police in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Speaking with journalists on Friday at the Freedom Park, Lagos Island, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, Soyinka said the recent invasion was an act of provocation as the herdsmen came through another path to his doorstep.

The Nobel laureate expressed sadness that the government had done virtually nothing to stop the incessant herdsmen attack across the nation, which has left behind trails of blood, pains and anguish.

“We need to wake up the leadership, let them know the seriousness of the issue on ground; these sorts of conquerors, these herdsmen are worse than Boko Haram.

“Creating corridor for cattle grazing will compound the problem, I do not think that is the solution,” he said, adding that creating ranches for the herdsmen could be part of the solution,” he said.

Health / Indian Girl With Three Legs ‘walks’ After Surgery by IratzsMicheal(m): 2:47pm On Apr 28, 2017
A toddler born with three legs — because body parts of a twin had grown inside her — was returning home to Bangladesh Friday after complex and rare surgery in Australia enabled her to walk and run, her doctor said.

Three-year-old Choity Khatun was given little prospect of survival until she was brought to Melbourne last year by Australian charity Children First Foundation.

A team of surgeons spent several months mapping out a procedure to reconstruct her anatomy.
“A twin had grown out of her pelvis but the twin was only part of a twin… The problem is there’s no rulebook for this because she’s a very unique individual so you have to try and work out what was where,” Chris Kimber, the paediatric surgery head at Monash Children’s Hospital, told AFP.
“When Choity arrived in Australia, she was very malnourished, she couldn’t walk properly at all,” said Kimber.

Working in consultation with experts from Europe and the United States, the surgeons planned a procedure that involved removing the remains of the third leg — part of which was earlier cut off in Bangladesh — as well as taking out, disconnecting and reconnecting other organs.
Choity’s condition meant that body parts from a twin developed in her perineum — the area between the anus and the vulva.

Surgeons spent countless hours examining her under anaesthetic and found she had two rectums, anuses, vaginas and uteruses. She was also incontinent.
– ‘She’s pretty good’ –
The surgery, which Kimber said was “extremely rare”, was finally carried out in November and involved eight doctors who specialise in genital and pelvic reconstructions working on the girl for eight hours.
“We spent three or four months thinking about it, presenting it to other doctors, getting ideas from around the world, and then based on lots of world opinion, we were able to come up with something that clearly works,” he added.
A key triumph for the surgeons, including Kimber, was that they were able to help her become continent, which Kimber said was “extraordinary”.
“She’s pretty good,” he added.

The little girl is also partially blind, but an ophthalmologist’s examination at the hospital found her sight could not be improved.
But she has sufficient sight to now walk and run like other children, to the delight of her 22-year-old mother.

“Everything is good now… she can play like every baby,” Shima Khatun told broadcaster Channel Nine on Thursday, adding that she was looking forward to returning to her village outside Dhaka with her daughter and being reunited with her husband

Crime / 15 Boko Haram Fighters Shot Dead In Sambisa Forest - Nigerian Military by IratzsMicheal(m): 2:35pm On Apr 28, 2017

Spokesman Kingsley Samuel says in a statement that the fighting occurred Thursday morning when the extremists attacked a base in the Sambisa forest in northern Nigeria. The forest had been a Boko Haram stronghold until the government declared the group “crushed” late last year.

Travel / China Bans Islamic Names by IratzsMicheal(m): 1:03pm On Apr 28, 2017
Auhorities in western China are prohibiting parents from naming their children Islamic names in the latest effort to dilute the influence of religion on life in the ethnic Uighur minority heartland.
“Muhammad,” ”Jihad” and “Islam” are among at least 29 names now banned in the heavily Muslim region, according to a list distributed by overseas Uighur activists.

If a parent chooses one of the barred names, the child will be denied government benefits. The names listed on the government document disseminated by Uighur groups include several related to historic religious or political figures and some place names.

“Imam,” ”Hajj,” ”Turknaz,” ”Azhar” and “Wahhab” are on the list, as are “Saddam,” ”Arafat,” “Medina” and “Cairo.”

Judgment calls about which names are deemed to be “overly religious” will be made by local government officials, according to Radio Free Asia, the U.S.-funded radio service which first reported the naming directive.

An official at a county-level public security office said some names were banned because they had a “religious background.” It is unclear how widespread the ban is or whether it is tightly enforced. The official refused to identify herself, as is common with Chinese officials.

The naming restrictions are part of a broader government effort to secularize Xinjiang, which is home to roughly 10 million Uighurs, a Turkic people who mostly follow Sunni Islam.

Top officials including Xinjiang’s Communist Party chief have publicly said that radical Islamic thought has infiltrated the region from Central Asia, protracting a bloody, years long insurgency that has claimed hundreds of lives.

Government-linked scholars and high-ranking officials, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, have urged local governments to better assimilate their Muslim minorities into the majority Han Chinese culture, and many ethnic policy hard-liners have decried a trend of so-called “Arabization” affecting China’s 21 million Muslims.

Aside from the prohibition on Islamic names, local Xinjiang officials have, at times, strongly discouraged or prohibited Islamic veils, while government-linked commentators have called for bans of mosques with domes or other Middle Eastern architectural styles.

Uighur activists and human rights groups say that radical thought had never gained widespread traction, but restrictions on religious expression are fueling a cycle of radicalization and violence.
For instance, “Mehmet,” the widely seen Turkic version of “Muhammad,” is considered “mainstream” in Xinjiang and would likely be permitted, RFA reported.

Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the overseas World Uighur Congress activist group, called the naming directive a policy bearing a “hostile attitude” toward Uighurs.

“Han parents choosing Western names are considered trendy but Uighurs have to accept Chinese regulations or else be accused of being separatists or terrorists,” Raxit said.

Politics / Lai Mohammed Explains Why Buhari Was Absent At FEC Meeting by IratzsMicheal(m): 5:18pm On Apr 26, 2017
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari was absent at Wednesday’s meeting of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, because he was still resting.

The president failed to preside over the weekly cabinet meeting for the second time in a row.

The Last FEC meeting was held on April 13 and Mr. Mohammed had said that Mr. Buhari asked his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, to preside over the meeting because he was attending to other issues.

The meeting was cancelled last week with presidential spokespersons saying the cancellation was as a result of the Easter holidays which did not allow ministers prepare their memos for presentation to the Council early enough.

Addressing State House correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting on Wednesday, Mr. Mohammed said the president “asked that he should be allowed to rest and the vice president should preside.”

The minister also said Mr. Osinbajo will meet with Mr. Buhari later in the day at the president’s official residence.

Romance / Nigerian Female Blogger Makes Shocking Confession Of How She Slept With 2788 Men by IratzsMicheal(m): 3:00pm On Apr 22, 2017
A Nigerian Lady Blogger, Ifediba Oluchi Anne, has emphatically stated that she’s a LovePeddler, having slept with 2788 men.

Read Her Post Below:

I a LovePeddler! When people ask me how many men I have slept with, I tell them “2708 men excluding women”. The look on their face is always priceless and they go on to give me a speech about how I have been useless all my life. Some of them go the extra mile to tell me to give my life to christ and retrace my steps so I can get married and have kids. One time, a man told me I may not be able to have kids in the future as I had sinned too much and not kept my temple holy. I do find it funny that people are quick to shame me based on my sexual choices as a woman while cheering on a man who was the same body count as I do.

I grew up in a religious home. My parents attended The Lord’s Chosen and my mom was a fanatic for the church and its doctrines. The only sex education I got was one which relied greatly on abstinence. My mom would always sound it in my ears that I had to be a virgin. To her, virgins were entitled to a special kind of blessing from God and a sweet lasting marriage.

When I was 17, I had sex with a man who was way older than I was. He touched my boobs in the stairs and gave me gifts at every turn. I would admit that the situation which I grew up in didn’t teach me how to say “No” without feeling bad. It has taken me a good number of years to set boundaries and shun the things I do not like without being ridden by guilt.

After my first sex experience which should be considered as rape in every sane country, I went through bouts of emotional breakdown. I had done something which society frowned at and I needed time to accept it. One would expect that I would never repeat such action anymore but I only went ahead to have more sex and do all sorts of stuff mom and church told me not to do. I never got any form of sexual education so you should know I made a lot of mistakes (which I love to call lessons)

I am not a LovePeddler because I have slept with the fictional amount of men ( yes, 2708 men is a fictional figure) although I have slept with a good amount of people. I am a LovePeddler because I talk about sex too often.

A good number of adults in Nigeria are having sex but as long as they don’t talk about, it is fine. Nigerians talk about sex. They talk about how sex is like an exercise for men. They talk about how it is okay for men to have as much sex as they want while they tell women to keep themselves. They talk about how rape is caused by women seductive dressing. They talk about how any woman with more than 1 body count is not wife material. They talk about how women privates can be used as a collateral for jobs and favors. They talk about how any woman who has had sex before should not cry rape if a man takes her against her will.

As long as you talk about sex the same way they are accustomed to then you are fine. For a while now, I have been talking differently about sex on Facebook. When Instablog9ja and other media carried one of my posts, people slut-shamed me.

Nairaland / General / Boy In Oshodi Bathes Girl With Acid On Her Birthday Thinking It's A Disinfectant by IratzsMicheal(m): 7:01pm On Apr 07, 2017
A 14-year-old girl's birthday celebration turned tragic after a male friend of hers emptied a bottle of acid on her, thinking it was a popular strong disinfectant known as Izal. Victoria Emmanuel had left her home in Mafoluku, Oshodi, to fetch water somewhere around the night market close by when the incident occurred on March 21.

The victim was met by her friends on her way to the tap and they began to pour water on her in celebration. Some poured dirty water on her, some poured sand. Soon after, the culprit Moshood Yusuf, 13, arrived then he entered a shop, picked a bottle and emptied the content on Victoria even after she warned him not to. She fainted soon after and was taken to the hospital. Parents of the boy have been going to plead with the parents of the victim and have constantly shown their support.

Speaking to The Nation, Victoria, who is currently recovering, narrated what transpired and revealed that though Moshood insists it was a mistake, another friend, Ganiyu, told her he had said he would hurt her .

“It was my birthday. I had told my friends the previous Monday that Wednesday, March 29 was my birthday. So, when I went to fetch water at the night market that night, those who came to my house to rejoice with me followed me," she narrated to The Nation.

“I was carrying a big bucket on my head but on the road, they put it down and started pouring the water on me to celebrate my birthday. Some were pouring dirty water on me and others sand. That was how Moshood ran into a shop and brought out a container. There was something inside and I told him not to pour it on me because we don’t know what was in it. He opened it, smelled it and said it smelt like chemical. We told him again that he shouldn’t pour that on me but he didn’t listen. As I walked past him, he poured the content on my body from behind. I screamed and ran towards the tap but he got there before me and opened it so that water would pour on my body.

“While I was under the tap, the woman who owns the place chased us away that I was wasting her water, though she owed me N70. That was the last thing I remembered. I was later told that I fainted and was rushed to Edmark Hospital. I was discharged in the evening of the following day because my daddy insisted he wanted to take me to General Hospital. So, I was moved to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) where they have been giving me treatment.

“Moshood was arrested by policemen from Makinde but he was later released. He has not come to see me since then but his parents have been coming. We didn’t fight. We have never quarrelled. He’s my friend. I don’t know what happened. Although, one Ganiyu claimed that he told him he was going to hurt me, I don’t know if that’s true.

“They said they have asked him where he got acid from but he insisted he thought it was Izal that was inside. He said he was looking for a container to enable him carry more water and pour on me. But the shop owner has denied keeping any acid in her shop. The woman was crying and swearing that she didn’t keep anything like that since she has little children, who could have easily gotten to it.”

Victoria's mother, Mrs. Chidinma Emmanuel, wondered if her daughter's skin will ever heal and said she is not interested in pressing charges but needs the family of the boy to help financially as her daughter's treatment has cost her family so much and has affected her petty trade.

“His parents have been coming. They have extended solidarity but I think it shouldn’t just be by words of mouth. You can see that we are a struggling family. This unfortunate incident has cost us so much. There’s a drug we have been buying N1,200 per sachet to apply on her body.

“I expect that Moshood’s family would support us financially or pick the bills, since all the children there said he was told to not pour the content on my daughter but he went ahead to do it. So far, we haven’t heard anything from them. Yes, they paid the N16,000 we were charged at Edmark the night the incident happened. After that, they haven’t done anything again. If they are coming for settlement, the only settlement is for them to pay all expenses incurred.”

Menwhile, Moshood’s mother, Mrs. Ganiyat Yusuf, has expressed her sympathy for the family and described the incident as a mistake.

She said to The Nation: “It was just a mistake. In fact, Moshood also got burnt by the acid on his chest and leg. He didn’t know the content of the bottle and since they were jubilating, he poured it on her without knowing. It’s a regrettable mistake. But what we want is for peace to reign. We don’t want a situation where both families would start fighting over it or the two children becoming enemies.”

Education / NANS To Relocate Its Headquarters To Kirikiri Prison by IratzsMicheal(m): 6:17pm On Apr 04, 2017
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the immediate release of the 13 UNILAG students that are being held in Kirikiri Prison.

The body gave a 24-hour ultimatum for the release of the students otherwise it will protest at the prison.

Standing trial before Chief Magistrate P.E Nwaka on April 1, they were accused to have engaged in an unlawful invasion of Television Continental’s (TVC) station in Lagos, protesting the alleged rustication of a student.

Following the trial, the Nwaka had ordered them to be remanded and adjourned the case to April 6 for the determination of their bail.

The students were arraigned on a two-count charge of unlawful invasion and disruption of activities and have all pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

The accused are: Femi Adeyeye, Toni Aina, Kodri Yaya, Asimi Oladime, Ismahim Olalekan, Segun Okesola, Abdulazeez Soneye, Idris Abogunloko, Muyiwa Olaniyi, Toheed Oladimeji, Joseph Akanni, Lukumon Olusegun, and Abiodun Agbeniyi.

Speaking today, NANS’ President, Chinonso Obasi, said Nigerian students would not accept further detention of their colleagues and the union would resolve into a protest at Kirikiri Prison if the 13 students were not freed within 24 hours.

After a painstaking review of the circumstances surrounding the ruling, we have resolved to demand and hereby demand the unconditional release of these students within 24 hours.

Consequently, we make bold to state that if at the expiration of our 24 hours ultimatum, these innocent students are not released without strings, we shall relocate the headquarters of NANS to Kirikiri in solidarity with our members.

We also hope that the authorities would use the opportunity of the 24 hours ultimatum to either expand the facilities of Kirikiri prison or release our colleagues, as they can see we are serious and determined by offering them a fair choice.”

Obasi said that the court should have issued a warning to the accused instead of sending them to prison for a mere protest.

“In other climes what the court should have done was to certify that the suspects are bona-fide students and release them to their school authorities or student leaders.

But rather than factor in the extenuating circumstances of their protest, the court hurriedly blunted the proper socialization of 13 Nigerian leaders of tomorrow,” he said.

TVC had also debunked allegations that it is responsible for their arrest.

“TVC did not at any point report or lodge any complaint at the police station,” remarked Abisola Agbaje, the legal manager of TVC in a press release in Lagos.

Agbaje said: “Truly, the Students came into our premises on Friday the 31st of March, 2017 about 3PM to protest the alleged rustication by UNILAG.”

“The protest was peaceful which we have on record and the students left our premises peacefully,” he added.

Education / Shocking!!! UNILAG Student Aborts 5months Old Pregnancy by IratzsMicheal(m): 9:00pm On Feb 09, 2017
People do talk about WOMB ESCAPE but what really happened here was an early and sad womb escape.

In the early hours of Tuesday 7th of February, an aborted baby was found at Madam Tinubu Hall, University Of Lagos, UNILAG.

No student came out to identify who did such unlawful act.

The baby have been cleared by the medical team in UNILAG.

My own question is simply why can't she just wait for another 4months??
