An American pastor kidnapped by armed men during a church service in South Africa has been freed following a "high-intensity shoot-out" that left three people dead, police say.

Josh Sullivan was found unharmed in the township in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday evening - the area where the 45-year-old was taken last Thursday.

There were no immediate details on the kidnappers, who had made a ransom demand.

There has been a dramatic increase in kidnappings for ransom in South Africa over the past decade.

Mr Sullivan's kidnappers had made a ransom demand, prompting the intervention of South Africa's elite police unit, known as the Hawks.

In a statement released on Wednesday morning, the Hawks said that Sullivan had been rescued following "verified intelligence wherein a coordinated team… moved swiftly to the identified location".

Hawks spokesperson Avele Fumba said that as the officers approached the house, the suspects attempted to flee inside a vehicle, while opening fire.

"The officers responded with tactical precision, leading to a high-intensity shootout in which three unidentified suspects were fatally wounded," Mr Fumba said.

South Africa kidnapping: 'I survived but part of me died that day'
Mr Sullivan's family and friends had made impassioned pleas for his safe return since his abduction.

Jeremy Hall, the Sullivan family's spokesman, told local newspaper TimesLIVE that he was at the church with his wife and their children when he was kidnapped.

"They knew his name," he said at the time.

Mr Sullivan describes himself as "a church planting missionary" on his personal website.

On it, he says he moved to South Africa with his wife and children in 2018 to establish a church for Xhosa-speaking people.

By granting amnesty to jihadist and terrorist.

By allowing sharia on the poor even though the concept is useless.

Foreign AffairsChina Imposes Visa Restrictions On US Personnel Over Tibet. by Ironfaceman(op): 11:52am On Apr 15, 2025
BEIJING, April 14 (Reuters)

- China has announced visa restrictions on some U.S. personnel who have "behaved badly" on Tibet-related issues, its foreign ministry said on Monday.
The announcement at a regular press conference came after Washington imposed additional visa restrictions two weeks ago on Chinese officials involved in policies governing foreigners' access to Tibetan areas.
.
The U.S. accused the Chinese Communist Party of refusing to afford U.S. diplomats, journalists, and other international observers access to Tibet and other Tibetan areas of China, and demanded "unrestricted access" to the areas for U.S. diplomats and others.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said Tibet-related issues were China's "internal affairs" and the "U.S. abuse of visa restrictions on Chinese officials" over Tibet "seriously violates international law and basic norms governing international relations''

Foreign tourists are allowed to visit the far western region of Tibet providing they travel in groups and obtain a permit in advance. Diplomats and foreign journalists need to get the approval of Tibet's local authorities to go there.
Tibet is open. China welcomes friendly people from other countries to visit, travel and do business in Tibet," Lin told reporters.
"But China opposes the interference of any country or person in Tibetan affairs under the pretext of so-called human rights, religion and culture," he added.
China seized control of Tibet in 1950 in what it describes as a "peaceful liberation" from feudalistic serfdom.
International human rights groups and exiles, however, have routinely condemned what they call China's oppressive rule in Tibetan areas.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps with approximately two billion monthly users, including Nigerians.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is making changes to WhatsApp’s compatibility with operating systems, meaning some older smartphones will not meet the necessary operating system requirements. The iPhones expected to be affected include models released in 2013 and 2014, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.

Also, Android phones unable to update to version 5.0 (Lollipop) or later will also be affected. Some of the android phones include Samsung’s Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini; Motorola’s Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014; HTC’s One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601, LG’s Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90; and Sony’s Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V.

WhatsApp stated in a statement that the changes are part of regular updates to ensure the app stays secure and functional while working with newer phones

Enyi Paul Onyebuchi’s quest has always been to be the holder of the highest academic qualification in his Ikelegu village and the larger Ndiebor community in Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

That dream has now come to reality, as he has acquired a PhD in Mathematics.

But his hope of getting a bigger position in the civil service after obtaining the certificates has remained a mirage. He is still in the position he was 18 years ago when he was employed in Ebonyi State University (EBSU) as a cleaner.

Enyi was employed by the university with an O’level in 2007. He went back to school and has subsequently earned a first degree, a Masters and a PhD in Mathematics.

He got a BSc in 2013, an MSc in 2017 and PhD in 2022. But despite the degrees, the 45-year-old man has remained on the same level and position. This has generated concerns from his friends, well-wishers and admirers who want the university to elevate him.

During an interaction with Saturday Sun, Enyi noted that he was earning a paltry N32,000 monthly after he was employed. He said he had been pushing for a conversion from his present position to a better one, but all to no avail.

He narrated the hurdles he crossed with his N32,000 before he earned his degrees, even as he expressed dismay that he is still on the level he was 18 years ago.
His words: “The current administration in the university just assumed office few months ago and the past administration couldn’t do anything after many write-ups and submissions that I made. I have not written to the current administration since they assumed office.

“There were so many obstacles I passed through before getting to this my present academic position. One of them is financial challenges. Looking at the meagre salary I was receiving and the huge amount of money I was paying as school fees.

“Many of my friends and my brothers helped me to cushion the effect of the financial problem I was passing through. Even the university assisted me equally because the school gave me a waiver to do the programmes. I was not paying the full school fees; they gave a 25 per cent waiver. Other ones, I managed and paid through my friends and brothers, because I couldn’t pay the fees from my salary.

“My salary at the time was N32,000. But I was moved to embark on the programme for many reasons. One of the reasons was that my family had not had anyone that had attained any high academic level, so, it was a challenge for me.

“Today, I am the first PhD holder in my village. So, these are the things that made me to go into the programmes so that I could change the narratives. I was not doing the programmes to be a lecturer or anything. I wanted to get better job and set the pace in my community and my village.

“I was employed here as a cleaner / messenger.”

He stated that his dream was to become an engineer or a medical doctor, but ended up in Mathematics. But he said he was still determined to actualise the dream.

Enyi, a father of two, said he is also into agriculture, which he claimed has been sustaining him and his family. He urged the youth to also do the same to survive the current economic crisis in the country.

“I got married when I was doing the PhD. I didn’t marry as early as that. I was almost done with my course work on the PhD when I got married. I didn’t depend on my N32,000 salary when I was doing my programmes. I am a farmer; I was doing so many things. I farm with my hands and I employ people to farm for me.

“If I should sell the cassava I cultivated last year, I will not sell it for less than N1.5million. Then I am into piggery. I have many goats. So, these are the things that I do that helped me to do what I did,” he stated.

PhonesHere’s How Much A ‘made In The USA’ Iphone Would Cost by Ironfaceman(op): 11:20am On Apr 12, 2025
When President Barack Obama asked the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs about making an iPhone in the U.S., Jobs didn’t mince words.

“Those jobs aren’t coming back,” Jobs said at a dinner with Obama in 2011.

The president of the U.S. and the CEO of Apple
have changed, but the ambition of a “Made in the USA” iPhone remains.

Defending its “reciprocal tariffs,” the White House this week said President Donald Trump believes the U.S. has the workforce and the resources to build iPhones in the U.S. Apple CEO Tim Cook nor anybody else at the tech company have come out to back that claim, but analysts who follow Apple say the idea of an American-made iPhone is impossible at worst and highly expensive at best.

As it’s largely a theoretical exercise, there’s a broad range of guesses as to how much an all-American iPhone might cost.

Bank of America Securities analyst Wamsi Mohan said in a Thursday note that the iPhone 16 Pro, which is currently priced at $1,199, could increase 25% based on labor costs alone. That would make it a roughly $1,500 device.

Wedbush’s Dan Ives pegged $3,500 as the U.S. iPhone’s price shortly after last week’s tariff announcement, estimating that Apple would need to spend $30 billion over three years to move 10% of its supply chain to the U.S.

At the moment, Apple makes more than 80% of its products in China. Those products now receive a 145% tax when they’re imported into the U.S. after Trump’s tariffs went into effect this week.

Experts say that a “Made in the USA” iPhone would face serious challenges, ranging from finding and paying a U.S. workforce to tariff costs that Apple would incur importing parts to the U.S. for final assembly.

There’s broad agreement among analysts and industry watchers that it’s not likely to happen. Wall Street has doubted for years that Apple would do an American iPhone. “I don’t think that’s a thing,” Needham’s Laura Martin quipped on CNBC this week.

“It’s just not a reality that on the time frame of imposing tariffs that this is going to shift manufacturing here. It’s pie in the sky,” said Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint Research.

production in China.

A meeting of tooling engineers in China could fill “multiple football fields,” but in the U.S., it would be hard to fill one, Cook said.

The most recent effort to have Foxconn move significant production to the U.S. was a failure.

Trump announced a $10 billion investment from Foxconn to build plants in Wisconsin in 2017. Apple was never officially attached to Foxconn’s Wisconsin location, but that didn’t stop Trump from claiming Apple would build three “big beautiful plants” in the U.S.

Foxconn changed plans several times for what the Wisconsin plant would produce, but it eventually settled on making face masks during the pandemic – nothing electronics related. The Foxconn Wisconsin plant was pitched as delivering 13,000 jobs, but it only created 1,454 jobs.

During the pandemic, plans for the plant were abandoned, and most of the facility remains unbuilt.

Apple worked with Foxconn in 2011 to expand iPhone production to Brazil to avoid large import duties in that country. The plant is still operational today, and will produce iPhone 16 models to help Apple get around U.S. tariffs, according to recent Brazilian media reports.

But even after the $12 billion factory was operational, most components were still imported from Asia, and in 2015, four years after the plant was announced, the iPhones made in Brazil retailed for twice the price of iPhones made in China, according to Reuters.

However, recent efforts by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Apple’s main chip manufacturer, have been successful. TSMC now makes small quantities of cutting-edge chips at a new factory in Arizona, and Apple’s a committed customer.

Even if iPhones could be assembled in America, much of what goes into an iPhone comes from countries around the world, all of which have received tariffs.

The vast majority of parts in an iPhone are made in Asia. The processor is manufactured by TSMC in Taiwan, the display is produced by South Korean companies like LG or Samsung, and the majority of the other components are made in China.

Long over due. Broaden the ban to include Niger, Chad and Mali.
TravelFG Imposes 10-year Entry Bans For Visa Overstays, $15 Daily Fine From August 1 by Ironfaceman(op): 4:40am On Apr 12, 2025
The Federal Government has announced stricter immigration penalties, warning that expatriates who overstay their visas beyond six months will face a five-year entry ban, while overstaying for one year will attract a 10-year ban.

Additionally, the government said overstaying will incur a daily fine of $15, starting from the visa’s stated exit date, effective from August 1.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this during a meeting with the Organised Private Sector and other
stakeholders at the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association House in Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday.

Tunji-Ojo made the announcement while unveiling the Ministry of Interior’s new Expatriate Administration System

Among the reforms set to roll out from May 1 are the automated Landing and Exit Cards, Electronic Visa, Expatriate Comprehensive Insurance, and an upgraded Combined Expatriate Resident Permit and Alien Card.

Others include the Temporary Resident visa, Temporary Work Permit, and revised Expatriate Quota system.

Tunji-Ojo said the measures aim to curb visa overstays and obtain accurate data on expatriates in Nigeria.

Our records indicate fewer than 50,000 expatriates in Nigeria, which we know is inaccurate. We need to establish the true number of foreigners living in the country. A nation without reliable data cannot progress, as data is the foundation of effective planning,” he said.

Under the new system, he explained that Landing and Exit Cards would be automated, adding that expatriates must exit the country on or before their visa expiry date and apply for extensions only from outside Nigeria.

This is serious. We’re not introducing anything new regarding the landing and exit card, just automating the current paper-based process. In a country of over 230 million intelligent, tech-savvy people, we shouldn’t be using paper cards. Going forward, you must complete your landing and exit cards online,” he said.

He added that the automated process would help track overstayers.

“If you overstay, there will be consequences. Overstaying by six months attracts a five-year ban; one year attracts a 10-year ban. There is also a $15 daily overstay penalty. People claim to be visiting Nigeria for two weeks but stay for 30 years working — that must end,” he said.

While the new measures take effect from May 1, a three-month moratorium will be given to allow expatriates to regularize their status before strict enforcement begins in August.

Despite the automation of visa processes, in-person interviews will still be required for standard visa applications.

According to the Minister, the new Electronic Visa system, also launching on May 1, will allow applicants to obtain visas within 48 hours.

This replaces the existing visa-on-arrival regime, which he described as vulnerable to corruption and influence-peddling.

“We’re introducing the e-visa to make access to Nigeria easier for tourists and business travellers. Globally, population equals market, and we want to open our
borders to legitimate opportunities. The e-visa eliminates bottlenecks. No more lobbying. It’s a seamless and secure system,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

He further announced the introduction of an annual Expatriate Comprehensive Insurance policy. This, he said, was necessary due to the ministry consistently exceeding its budget for repatriating Nigerians.

We spend billions annually on repatriation. Just a month ago, we had exhausted our yearly budget and had to request an extra N25m. That money should be used to build infrastructure, not deport individuals. We needed a sustainable solution,” he said.

He explained that instead of demanding a lump sum for repatriation, which could exceed $10,000, the government has opted for a mandatory insurance policy.

Under this scheme, the insurance company covers repatriation costs for defaulters, saving the government money.

Foreign AffairsUS Fires Greenland Military Base Chief For 'undermining' Vance by Ironfaceman(op): 2:26pm On Apr 11, 2025
The head of the US military base in Greenland has been fired after she reportedly sent an email distancing herself from Vice-President JD Vance's criticism of Denmark.

The US military's Space Operations Command said Col Susannah Meyers had been removed from her role at Pituffik Space Base due to a "loss of confidence in her ability to lead".

Last month, Vance said Denmark had "not done a good job" for Greenlanders and had not spent enough on security while visiting the Danish territory.

The alleged email, released by a military news site, told staff Vance's comments were "not reflective" of the base. A Pentagon spokesman cited the article, saying "undermining" US leadership was not tolerated.

Following Vance's trip, on 31 March, Col Meyers is reported to have written: "I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the US administration discussed by Vice-President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base."

Military.com - which published the email - said the contents had been confirmed as accurate to them by the US Space Force.

Appearing to confirm this was the reason for her firing, chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell linked to the Military.com article in a post on X, writing: "Actions [that] undermine the chain of command or to subvert President [Donald] Trump's agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense."

The Space Force's statement announcing Col Meyers' removal on Thursday said that Col Shawn Lee was replacing her.

It added: "Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties."

Col Meyers had assumed command of the Arctic station in July last year. Col Lee was previously a squadron commander at the Clear Space Force Station in Alaska.

During his whirlwind trip, Vance had also reiterated Trump's desire to annex Greenland for security reasons.

Since the US delegation's visit, both Greenland and Denmark have shown a united front, opposing a US annexation of the autonomous Danish territory.

Earlier this month, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's official visit saw her stand side-by-side with her Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen and his predecessor, Mute Egede.

Speaking to reporters, Frederiksen directly addressed Trump, telling him: "You can't annex other countries."

She added that Denmark was fortifying its military presence in the Arctic, and offered closer collaboration with the US in defending the region.
