Dr Mark Afua, a vet and chairman of the rescue centre, takes Hanks and puts him in a big metal cage - one of many in the single-storey building designed for dogs, cats, snakes and other animals.

Hanks wheels around in circles in his cage - and Dr Afua tries to calm the distressed fluffy-haired dog.

Mr Maxwell, an online media strategist, was recently made redundant. His job-hunting means he is never at home and so feels unable to look after Hanks.

"I'm trying to get whatever I have to do to survive. I don't even have the time now [to look after Hanks] because I'm always out looking for jobs," he told the BBC.

The 33-year-old's decision was difficult to make, but it is one that many pet owners are taking in the face of the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

Africa's most-populous nation has been hit by high inflation since President Bola Tinubu came to power two years ago and removed a long-standing fuel subsidy.

The inflation rate surged from 22% in May 2023 to 35% in December 2024, a 28-year high, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS.)

Inflation has since fallen back to 24% but this means that prices are still continuing to rise, just not as quickly as before.

The economic crunch has meant that some companies have had to downsize to keep afloat in the face of rising operating costs, pushing young people like Mr Maxwell into an already saturated labour market.

Animal rights activists and animal shelters say that they are seeing an unprecedented numbers of abandoned animals as the cost of looking after pets spirals out of control.

Prices for pet food and veterinary care have jumped by more 100% as some things, especially medication, are imported - and the local currency has plummeted against the dollar.

"About 10 years ago when we started this project, we really didn't have people giving up their dogs because they were unable to feed the dogs," Dr Afua told the BBC.

"Right now, we have 10, 12 animals being dropped in a month.

Some, like Mr Maxwell, hand their pets over to a shelter for adoption but others simply abandon their animals.

Animal cruelty campaigner Jackie Idimogu, who is president of My Dog and I - a dog-lovers' community in Lagos who often helps to rehome pets, says she has noticed the change.

"Now they don't even have that patience [to find new owners]. They just tie the dog out to a post on the road or they just unleash it on the road," she told the BBC.

The 32-year-old says more that 50% of her income as a furniture maker and interior designer now goes on looking after her four dogs.

"I'm spending roughly 250,000 naira ($158; £117) every month on pets," she says, adding that this includes someone to walk the dogs and look after them when she was not around.

But Ms Idimogu says she cannot bear to give them up.

"As a single lady, I have no kids of my own yet. My dogs are my babies. I don't see any difference between myself as a dog mum and a human mum. I don't think I have it in me to give up any of my babies for any reason whatsoever."

Instead, she has chosen to adapt her lifestyle - fewer luxuries for herself like jewellery, expensive hair styles and spa visits and fewer treats for her pets like chicken, yoghurt treats and car rides.

"I used to be flashy, but now I had to tone down because of my dogs."

Movie star Jet Li humorously remarked that he is now “at the bottom of the pile” as all four of his daughters have graduated, while he doesn’t even have a primary school certificate.

The Straits Times reported that in a post on Weibo, Li shared photos from his daughter Jada’s graduation ceremony, calling the graduations of all his daughters "the highlight" of his life.

He also acknowledged Jada’s hard work, stating: "She is finally free to pursue her dreams after more than 10 years of hard work."

According to Chinese-language media outlets, all four of Li’s daughters received their higher education in the U.S. Jada graduated from Barnard College, while Li’s third daughter Jane is a graduate of Harvard University. In a previous post, Li also revealed that his second daughter Taimi has become an ophthalmologist.

During his visit to New York for Jada’s graduation ceremony, Li took the opportunity to explore the city with her.


"My daughter accompanied me on a subway ride, a stroll in Central Park, and we grabbed a hot dog when hunger struck," he shared. "Taking a leisurely break, I felt truly relaxed in these ordinary moments."

Li, 62, was born in Beijing, China, and faced financial hardship after the death of his father when he was just two years old. In Lagos, where appearances often matter more than substance, the real estate market starkly mirrors Nigeria’s deeper urban dysfunction. Across the upscale neighbourhoods of Lekki, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Banana Island, and the emerging ‘premium’ estates on the mainland, thousands of residents awaken daily to a frustrating and sobering reality.

To Paul Omenka, who lives in Lekki Phase 1, the affluent estate represents a costly illusion.

There, residents pay millions of naira and dollars in rent, mortgages, and service charges for homes that fail to provide even the most basic amenities.
“In a place like Lekki, where the promise of elite living once enticed many, the reality today is far from glamorous,” Omenka said.

He noted that in many of Lagos affluent estates, residents still depend heavily on private boreholes or tankers for potable water, as the municipal supply remains unreliable.

Many roads within these estates are poorly constructed or left unpaved, washing away with every heavy rainfall and turning into muddy, impassable tracks.
Waste disposal is erratic at best. Drainage systems are either open, clogged, or simply nonexistent, creating perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes and escalating flood risks during the rainy season,” he added

Saturday PUNCH gathered that despite these glaring deficiencies, tenants and homeowners dutifully pay service charges that can run into hundreds of thousands, sometimes even millions of naira annually.

“It’s not just about potholes or the frequent power outages that Lagosians have long come to accept as normal; the problems run far deeper,” Omenka enthused.

He noted that diesel generators hum constantly due to the unreliable power supply, while security, something that should be guaranteed in gated communities, is often outsourced to ill-equipped guards.

“Sometimes, even after a light rain, the streets remain waterlogged,” he said.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that while Lagos residents in these overpriced estates struggle to manage their environment, similarly priced communities abroad, in cities like Dubai, London, or Johannesburg, offer flawless infrastructure, 24/7 utilities, advanced security systems, and efficient estate management.

There, service charges are transparent, maintenance is visible, and residents have a genuine voice. In Lagos, there is a huge gap in estate management, a system designed more to collect fees than to serve residents,” Omenka noted.

Israeli foreign minister says arms embargoes will lead to 'second Holocaust' and end of Israel.

Israel’s foreign minister has said that an arms embargo on his country would lead to the elimination of the Israeli state and “a second Holocaust”.

Gideon Saar was speaking on Tuesday at an international conference on antisemitism in Jerusalem.

"If, God forbid, the calls and actions of countries and politicians for an arms embargo on Israel succeed, the result will be the destruction of Israel and a second Holocaust," he said.

The comments came as Spain this week called on European countries to suspend arms shipments amid Israel’s ongoing siege on Gaza.

At a meeting of the “Madrid Group”, Spain’s foreign minister called for an immediate suspension of Europe’s cooperation deal with Israel and an embargo on arms shipments.
Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Morocco and Brazil were among those present at the meeting.

“What is the meaning of actions or statements - by politicians or countries - to impose an arms embargo on Israel?” said Saar, in response.

“If such moves succeed, Israel will simply be destroyed. There will be another Holocaust - on the soil of the land of Israel.”

“This is essentially a way to deprive the Jewish people of the means to defend themselves. Means that they so lacked during the long years of exile and during the Holocaust.”

The largest suppliers of weapons to Israel are the United States, Germany and Italy.

Several nations, including France, Spain and the UK, have either paused the supply of some weapons, or have suspended export licences.

A report earlier this month found that the UK continued to send a wide range of arms to Israel even after the government suspended 30 arms export licences in September.

The UK, France and Canada have threatened Israel with sanctions if it fails to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter.

"We will not stand by while the Netanyahu government pursues these egregious actions," the countries said jointly on 20 May.

"If Israel does not cease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete actions in response."

The three countries also urged Israel to halt settlements in the occupied West Bank, saying they are "illegal and undermine the viability of a Palestinian state and the security of both Israelis and Palestinians".

In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the three governments of emboldening Hamas and being “on the wrong side of justice”.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he wants his country to join a major European plan to bolster defences by 1 July.

Speaking to CBC on Tuesday, Carney said he hoped Canada would sign on to ReArm Europe - a plan to dramatically increase defence spending on the continent to in the next five years - in a bid to reduce reliance on the US.

"Seventy-five cents of every (Canadian) dollar of capital spending for defence goes to the United States. That's not smart," Carney told the public broadcaster.

His remarks come amid tension with the US after threats from President Donald Trump - though Carney has also previously said he is open to joining a missile defence project proposed by Trump.

A day after Carney's remarks, Canada's defence minister told a military trade show that his country wanted to quickly boost defence capacity in the face of growing global threats.

"The global security environment is today volatile and uncertain," said defence minister David McGuinty on Wednesday, citing Russia's war in Ukraine, as well as a more assertive China.

McGuinty said there would be a future focus on the Arctic, where competing nations were challenging Canada's sovereignty.

Defence also featured on Tuesday in the Speech from the Throne - an event that opened the new parliament and outlined the sitting government's agenda.

The address was read in person by King Charles III, Canada's monarch, as part of a royal visit that was designed to highlight Canada's identity and sovereignty.

The speech contained commitments to "rebuilding, rearming, and reinvesting" in Canada's military.

It also outlined the government's goal of strengthening defence relationships with European allies, and made mention of joining the ReArm Europe plan.

The remarks by Canadian officials come after Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said he expected members of his Western defence alliance - including Canada - to grow their annual defence spending to a level equivalent to 5% of each nation's GDP.

The Nato target was previously 2% of GDP, but Rutte said members must prepare to defend themselves from increasingly powerful adversaries like Russia and China.

"Russia has teamed up with China, North Korea and Iran," Rutte told a Nato forum in the US on Monday. "They are expanding their militaries and their capabilities. They are preparing for long-term confrontation."

The plan to increase Nato's spending target still has to be approved by member-country leaders, who are set to meet in the Netherlands in late June.

Canada has long faced pressure for failing to meet Nato targets, and was accused last year by US House Speaker Mike Johnson of "riding on America's coattails".

Canadian business leaders have also called on their government to majorly boost spending in the defence industry, touting this as a way to boost the economy.

In Wednesday's remarks, McGuinty told defence industry representatives that Carney's government would prioritise procuring military technology and equipment from Canadian companies.

Last week, Carney said that "high-level" talks were also taking place with the US about joining Trump's Golden Dome missile defence system. The King's throne speech noted that Canada wanted to continue talks with the US on security on trade.

The US president posted on his Truth Social network later on Tuesday evening that the Golden Dome project would cost Canada US$61bn "if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation."

"But will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State," he added, repeating his often-repeated view that Canada should be absorbed by the US. "They are considering the offer!" he claimed.

In response, Carney's office said in a statement that the prime minister "has been clear at every opportunity, including in his conversations with President Trump, that Canada is an independent, sovereign nation, and it will remain one".

Meanwhile, Canada's UN ambassador reposted the US president's comment on X with the response: "In another context this would called a 'protection racket'."

The U.S. and Israeli governments are reportedly unhappy with Japan’s involvement in the GCAP sixth-generation fighter development program, led jointly by the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan.

According to Infodefensa, Washington is pressuring Tokyo through diplomatic and economic channels — including potential threats to bilateral security cooperation — over Japan’s participation in the program.


The United States is said to be concerned about the level of autonomy Japan would gain through GCAP. Since the end of World War II, Japan has relied heavily on American designs and technology for its defense aviation. But in 2020, Tokyo broke from that tradition by launching its own F-X program to replace its F-2 fighters, a derivative of the U.S. F-16C.

In November 2022, Japan reached an agreement with the UK and Italy to merge its efforts with the British Tempest program, forming the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP). The program aims to produce a sixth-generation fighter jet by 2035.

Israeli intelligence services have also reportedly sought to influence the program over concerns that Saudi Arabia may eventually join.
Riyadh signed a declaration of intent to participate in March 2023. In November 2024, Italy’s foreign minister acknowledged the possibility of Saudi involvement.

While sources cited by Intelligence Online did not detail Israel’s actions, the report suggests pressure is being applied amid geopolitical sensitivities.



Meanwhile, GCAP partners are seeking to capitalize on divisions with the United States, including tensions triggered by former President Donald Trump’s confrontational approach to allies. Canada and Portugal were reportedly briefed on GCAP after their defense ministries said they were exploring alternatives to the planned procurement of American F-35 fighters.

GCAP (Global Combat Air Program) is a trilateral initiative by the UK, Italy and Japan to jointly develop a sixth-generation combat aircraft. While the airframe will be common, each country is expected to equip the aircraft with different radar, sensors, weapons, and mission systems.

The program merges the UK’s Tempest project, Italy’s efforts centered around Leonardo, and Japan’s F-X initiative. Key industrial partners include BAE Systems (UK), Leonardo (Italy), and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan). Engine development is being led by Rolls-Royce, Japan’s IHI Corporation, and other leading manufacturers.


In July 2024, BAE Systems began assembly of the first Tempest prototype, with completion expected by 2026. The aircraft design has been approved by both BAE and the UK Royal Air Force. The first flight is scheduled for 2027.

As a footballer, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas seemed destined for greatness. But a drug-smuggling conviction has left his career and reputation in tatters. How did things unravel so dramatically for a player once tipped for the top?

Hailed by legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as a footballer who could "play anywhere", Emmanuel-Thomas was marked out early on as having elite potential.

Imposing, technically gifted and surprisingly agile, the striker appeared to have the world at his feet.

But a career that promised so much at Arsenal faltered and saw him spend years flitting between the second and third tiers of English football.

In 2020 he moved to play in Scotland and was still plying his trade north of the border when, on 18 September, he was arrested at his home in Gourock, near Glasgow.

Wind back a decade and a half, and things were very different.

It is 26 May 2009, and Arsenal's latest batch of academy talents can barely contain their excitement.

One player in particular has stood out: their 16-year-old captain, Emmanuel-Thomas, who has scored in every round of the competition.

Emmanuel Thomas, by then 33, appeared in court charged with orchestrating the attempted importation of drugs, and was sacked by his club.

Detectives discovered he had duped Ms Piotrowska, from north-west London, and Ms Rowland, from Chelmsford, into travelling to Thailand with the promise of £2,500 in cash and an all-expenses-paid trip.

Their job? To bring home two suitcases each, filled with what they were assured was gold, Chelmsford Crown Court heard

They flew business class from Bangkok, landing in Essex via Dubai.

Unknown to them, they were smuggling in cannabis with a street value of £600,000, vacuum-packed inside the four cases.

The pair were stopped and arrested by Border Force officers, before being charged with drug importation offences.

With the pair in custody, and Emmanuel-Thomas later remanded, police probed how the drugs made it to the UK.

They soon found the player was the intermediary between suppliers in Thailand and dealers in the UK, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA).
