Reuters — Lesotho’s foreign minister said on Wednesday he was shocked and insulted by US President Donald Trump saying nobody has heard of the African country, and invited him to come visit. Trump mentioned Lesotho in his address to US Congress on Tuesday evening while listing some of the foreign spending he had cut as “appalling waste.” “Eight million dollars to promote LGBTQI+ in the African nation of Lesotho, which nobody has ever heard of,” Trump said, drawing laughs in the Congress. Lesotho’s foreign minister, Lejone Mpotjoane, said the remark was “quite insulting.” I’m really shocked that my country can be referred to like that by the head of state,” he told Reuters. Lesotho, a mountainous nation of about 2 million people which is encircled by South Africa, has the highest average altitude of any country and is sometimes called The Kingdom in the Sky. Lesotho is such a significant and unique country in the whole world. I would be happy to invite the president, as well as the rest of the world to come to Lesotho,” said Mpotjoane. He said some civil society organizations funded by the US Embassy in Lesotho did work to support the LGBT+ community, but the United States also provided important funding for the country’s health and agriculture sectors...... https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/05/africa/lesotho-president-trump-congress-int-latam/index.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=whatsappCNN&utm_content=2025-03-05T19:34:05

Authorities in France are investigating a suspected arson attack that left a dozen Tesla vehicles in ruins at a dealership in Plaisance-du-Touch, a suburb of Toulouse. The fire, which broke out late Sunday night, caused an estimated 700,000 euros in damages, reported local news website La Depeche. It also raised questions about possible motives ranging from sabotage to political activism at a time when there is growing anti-Tesla sentiment in Europe, fueled by CEO Elon Musk’s involvement in the US government. Firefighters arrived at the scene around 4 am on Monday and managed to contain the blaze to the vehicles. Eight cars were completely destroyed, while four others suffered significant damage. The Tesla dealership itself remained untouched, though it was forced to close for the day as investigations began. Local authorities have indicated that arson is the likely cause, citing a hole found in the perimeter fence, reported French news website Numerama. Authorities also pointed to previous threats towards previous threats by militant groups towards Tesla. Anti-Musk sentiment The attack comes amid rising tensions surrounding Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk. Musk’s recent political stances, including his alignment with US President Donald Trump and support for far-right parties in Europe, have sparked backlash. Protest movements targeting Tesla have emerged, particularly in the United States, where demonstrations and acts of vandalism have been reported. Some groups have even called for direct action against Tesla locations worldwide. Sales of Tesla vehicles in France and Germany have seen a sharp decline. The fire in Toulouse follows other recent anti-Tesla incidents, including an alleged arson attack on Tesla Superchargers in Massachusetts. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.hindustantimes.com/trending/tesla-showroom-set-on-fire-12-cars-destroyed-in-suspected-arson-attack-in-france-101741243979863-amp.html

Canadian provinces pulling US alcohol off store shelves in response to Trump trade policy is "worse than tariffs", the boss of Jack Daniel's maker Brown-Forman has said. Several Canadian provinces, including Ontario, which is by far the most populated, took action this week in retaliation for US tariffs on Canadian goods. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), one of the largest buyers of alcohol in the world, removed US-made alcoholic drinks from its shelves on Tuesday. Brown-Forman boss Lawson Whiting said the Canadian response was "disproportionate" to the 25% levies on Canadian goods imposed by the Trump administration. "I mean, that's worse than a tariff, because it's literally taking your sales away, completely removing our products from the shelves," Mr Whiting said. In response to the tariffs, Canada has retaliated with 25% levies on goods imported from the US, including beer, spirits, and wine. Some provinces also took action themselves, including Ontario and Nova Scotia. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the LCBO sells nearly $1bn of US alcohol per year. "As of today, every single one of these products is off the shelves," Mr Ford said on Tuesday. The LCBO is the exclusive wholesaler in Ontario, which means other retailers, bars and restaurants in the province will no longer be able to restock US products, Mr Ford said. Nevertheless, Mr Whiting said Canada makes up only 1% of Brown-Forman's total sales, so the firm can withstand the hit. Canadians are being advised by the LCBO to buy products made in Canada. Some Canadians have been turning to local goods anyway in response to the Trump tariffs. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn0422zzpw8o

China will impose additional tariffs of up to 15% on some U.S. goods, its government said, while Canada vowed tariffs of up to 25% after new U.S. tariffs on both countries took effect. HONG KONG — China and Canada moved swiftly on Tuesday to retaliate against newly imposed U.S. tariffs, announcing their own levies on U.S. goods that could further disrupt the United States’ trade with its top three trading partners. A 25% U.S. tariff on almost all goods imported from Canada and Mexico took effect Tuesday just after midnight, along with an additional 10% tariff on goods from China. The three countries together accounted for more than 40% of total U.S. imports last year and are also the top three U.S. export markets. China will impose additional tariffs of up to 15% on some U.S. goods, its government said, while Canada vowed tariffs of up to 25%. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced her country would enact countermeasures Sunday in response to the U.S. tariffs, adding that they would include both “tariff and nontariff measures.” The new Chinese levies, which take effect on March 10, include a 15% tariff on chicken, wheat, corn and cotton and a 10% tariff on sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, fruits, vegetables and dairy and fish products. Chinese state media had reported earlier that U.S. agricultural products would be targeted. China says that the U.S. tariffs undermine cooperation between the world’s two largest economies and that they hurt American businesses and consumers, as well as international trade. “The Chinese people have never believed in coercion or intimidation, nor do we succumb to bullying and hegemonic tactics,” Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a regular briefing in Beijing on Tuesday. Pressure, threats and coercion are not the right way to engage with China. If the U.S. attempts to exert extreme pressure on China, it is simply targeting the wrong country and miscalculating its moves.” https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/trade-tensions-china-canada-retaliate-us-tariffs-rcna194645

A mild drama unfolded on Friday at the Lagos State court when two lawyers claimed to represent the Lagos State House of Assembly during the hearing of a suit filed by Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, challenging his removal as Speaker. Obasa filed the suit (ID/9047GCM/2025) before Justice Yetunde Pinheiro, contesting the constitutionality of the Lagos State House of Assembly’s sitting and proceedings during a recess, which occurred without the Speaker reconvening the House or delegating authority. Obasa’s lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, is representing him in the case. The suit addresses the constitutionality of the Lagos State House of Assembly’s proceedings on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was allegedly impeached as Speaker. Obasa’s application presents nine grounds, including interpretations of various sections of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), as well as the Rules and Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly. The claimant seeks the court’s interpretation of Sections 36, 90, 92(2)(c), 101, and 311 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), in relation to Order V, Rule 18(2), and Order II, Rule 9(1)(ii)(iii)(iv)(v)(vi)(vii)(viii) of the Lagos State House of Assembly Rules, which have constitutional status. When the matter was called, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, appeared for Obasa, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, appeared for the first defendant (Lagos House of Assembly), Mr. Tayo Oyetibo, SAN, appeared for Mojosola Lasbat Meranda (current Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly), and Mr. Olu Daramola, SAN, appeared for parties seeking to join the suit. However, a mild drama unfolded when another lawyer, Abang Mkpandiok, challenged Falana’s representation of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Mkpandiok stated that he had been briefed by the Assembly the previous night and had filed his motion for a change of counsel that morning. He argued that the right to choose counsel is a fundamental human right and urged the court to address his application first. In a motion brought under Order 52, Rule 2 and 3 of the Lagos State High Court Civil Procedure Rules 2019, Mkpandiok sought the court’s permission to replace Femi Falana SAN of Falana & Falana Chambers with himself, Abang Mkpandiok, Esq., of Atlantic Law Firm. Falana objected, stating that he had not been served with any notice of a change and remained the counsel on record for the Assembly. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2025/02/28/courtroom-drama-legal-battle-erupts-over-representation-in-obasas-removal-lawsuit/?amp
