On Wednesday, a Access Bank branch at Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos State has been gutted by fire.

It was gathered that a part of the bank’s building was gutted by fire after a petrol tanker exploded near it. The Federal Fire Service confirmed the incident at 10.20 am.

“Our men are on the ground, trying to combat the inferno. Thanks for notifying us,” it tweeted via @Fedfireng.

According to Spanish football expert, Guillem Balague, Serie A champions, Juventus, is trying to offer Cristiano Ronaldo to Barcelona, as they try to lower their wage bill.

Many clubs like Juventus have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and are looking to trim costs. “And there’s been talks about the MLS because Juventus want to get rid of that wage.

“It is as drastic as that. He’s been offered everywhere, including Barcelona.

What a life, well lived

When in June, the death of Aba-based oil merchant was announced, Chief Anthony Obiagboso
Enukeme, chairman and managing director, Tonimas Oil Limited, everyone who knew him felt a deep sense of loss of an accomplished man. His popularity, philanthropic gestures, business acumen and dedication to serving God were last celebrated in January this year, when he turned 76. Five months down the line, he took a bow and departed for the great beyond.

Chief (Dr.) Enukeme, KJSI, JP, OON, was better known as Tonimas, the corporate name of the
independent oil marketing company he founded. He had a humble beginning, a very inspiring one. Born on January 21, 1944, in Umudioka, Neni, in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, Enukeme was until his death the Onowu (traditional prime minister) of Neni community.

In the early stage of his life, Enukeme obtained primary and secondary education in Neni but, in his later years, he obtained a degree in Public Administration from the Abia State University, Uturu. Driven by ambition made of sterner stuff, he went further to obtain a master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the same university. He received an honourary doctorate degree in Business Administration from the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.

In the course of his initial struggle to succeed in life, young Enukeme had, between 1962 and 1970,
worked with French oil giant, Total Oil, as a fuel attendant. But by 1981, he took a bold step in business by establishing Tonimas Nigeria Limited, an oil marketing company that later went into production and distribution of a wide range of lubricants. Although Tonimas was established in Aba in present-day Abia State, which serves as its head office, its business frontiers have expanded over time, covering the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. Beyond Nigeria, he established outlets and trading posts in other West African countries.

Even though the company was initially established as an oil marketing company, Enukeme diversified into many other sectors, including real estate, table water production, haulage, shipping, insurance, hospitality, aluminum profiles and nails production and several others. His White Castle Hotel and the long span aluminum profile company are located in Neni, his home town, where he created massive job opportunities. At the last count, his group of companies were said to have offered employment to no fewer than 9,000 job seekers across the country.

Married to Iyom Mary Uzoaku, with whom he had six children, Enukeme was a devout Christian of the Catholic denomination. In his capacity as the Onowu of Neni, he became the chairman of Anambra State Council of Traditional Prime Ministers. He was widely honoured by various groups and associations. A one-time president of the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, he also became the president of Lubricant Producers Association of Nigeria (LUPAN). He was a recipient of Merit Award on Business Excellence by the National Affairs Society of Nigeria. He also bagged a Merit Award on Business Productivity by the Institute of Corporate Chairmen of Nigeria; and a Community Service Award by the Rotary Club International.

Despite his strong commitment to the growth of his business, Enukeme also made a modest contribution to the political development of the country. He was a member of the board of trustees of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

“A good man has joined the saints. Since I met him, it has been one good act or another recorded for him. He single-handedly built a church in his hometown, Neni; celebrated annual yam festival for his people, and gave generously to numerous church and philanthropic causes,” said Victor Oye, national chairman of APGA.

Enukeme was a renowned philanthropist and was adequately honoured for his philanthropy. He awarded secondary education and university scholarships to many young people. As part of his contribution to community development, he provided water and medicare to his people. He spent his resources to construct and maintain feeder and link roads in his community. For those acts of charity, a non-governmental organisation, the Martina Chinyere Enidom Foundation honoured him with an award of excellence on community development.

For his contributions towards the development of Aba, his host community, Enukeme was honoured with the title of Enyi-Abia by the Abia State government. In his Neni community, he single-handedly built a police station and barracks. In recognition of his many good works that touched many lives, he was decorated as Anya-Anaocha by traditional rulers in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.


Enukeme’s contributions towards the development and sustenance of the Catholic Church were quite noticeable and for that he had a rich profile in the church. Among others, he built and furnished the Saint James’ Catholic Church, Neni. The church had a Reverend Fathers’ house and other facilities for worship. As a devout Catholic, he became president, Knights of Saint John’s International, Commandery 445, Aba, Abia State. He was also the grand president of the Owerri Grand Commandery.

Back home in Anambra, Enukeme was the vice chairman of Awka Catholic Diocesan Pastoral Council. It was, therefore, not a surprise that he was inducted as a member of the Papal Knight, Order of Saint Gregory the Great (KSG). Tonimas, as he was fondly called, has severally been described by many people in many ways: A man of vision, articulate and versatile businessman, a highly experienced man and tireless in the pursuit of his dreams. He was patron of many reputable associations including the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Aba depot.

As the remains of the late Chief Anthony Enukeme are to be committed to Mother Earth on August 14, 2020, he will, no doubt, be remembered for his many good works. His dedication to the service of God, and his commitment to giving a helping hand will remain in the minds of many that came across him in his lifetime.

Following the call by an elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassi, for Igbo presidency in 2023, the former national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, has declared that Ndigbo would join Nnamdi Kanu, to seek Biafra secession from Nigeria if South-East does not produce the president of the country in 2023.

Nwodo, who was also the former governor of Enugu State and national secretary of PDP said that
Ndigbo have suffered grievous marginalisation in Nigeria and should be given a chance to produce a president for the sake of equity and national unity. He said this during an exclusive interview with Vanguard on Tuesday, adding that South-East geopolitical zone has been persecuted for over 50 years even though the region is more patriotic than any other geopolitical zone in terms of economic development of the nation. He said

“Yakassi’s call is very fair and that is the correct thing. In the first republic, the country was led by Tafawa Balewa, in the second republic, it was led by Shehu Shagari. And then, those of us in PDP made a very strong case to move the presidency to South East, because even the military people were all from the north, apart from Aguiyi Ironsi who presided over for a very short time.

“We managed to convince them at the party and Olusegun Obasanjo and Alex Ekwueme contested. That was when Obasanjo won and after his tenure, he handed power to another northerner, late Alhaji Musa Yar’Adua who unfortunately died in office and the Vice president completed the tenure. President Muhammadu Buhari will complete his eight years in office by 2023. Following equity, the presidency should come to the South-East because Obasanjo was president for eight years, now Yemi Osibanjo is also the vice president and would finish his eight-year tenure by 2023.

“So, in Southern Nigeria, it would be a total disaster if we do not produce the next president because we have been terribly marginalised since the end of the civil war. For 50 years now, we have been persecuted for having fought for freedom. When will this marginalisation stop? Anybody who loves Nigeria and who wishes Nigeria well should go for Igbo Presidency in 2023 for unity, fairness, equity and for Nigeria to move forward.

“It is only an Igbo man who will not marginalise any part of Nigeria because we constitute the semen that hold the country together. We are the only tribe that you find in every nook and cranny of Nigeria; doing business and developing wherever they are as if it was their own place.

“I don’t believe that the Igbos are not united, there has never been a time when any region produced a consensus candidate, everybody emerged through primary elections. The last election was zoned to the north and Atiku Abubakar contested with other aspirants before he emerged PDP’s candidate, so did Buhari contest with other candidates before emerging the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC. There is no zone that has produced a candidate by consensus. It doesn’t matter how many people are interested, they will be subjected to party primaries and the person with highest vote will win.

“I agree with Nnamdi Kanu in everything he says about the marginalisation of the Igbos. He, more than any other person has put it on the international map. If Nigeria tells the elites from South East that they would be treated as second class citizens in Nigeria, and that they can never be president, almost all of them will go with Kanu to fight for Biafra.

"Anybody who wants to be a second-class citizen can support whoever he wants. Any Igbo man who wants to bequeath secured future for himself and generation yet unborn should support this call for Igbo presidency. In the spirit of fairness and equity, Nigeria should give the presidency to South East in 2023, otherwise, we will join him and fight for Biafra."

The Nigerian Army says soldiers allegedly arrested for bullion van robbery in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State are not its personnel.

Deputy Director, Army Public Relations in 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Enugu. Yusuf said this in a statement titled, ‘Re: Police Nab Soldiers, Others For Bullion Van Robbery’.

He noted that the two alleged soldiers are not serving in any of Nigerian Army’s units, commands, formations or divisions. The statement read,

“The attention of Headquarters 82 Division Nigerian Army has been drawn to on-line publication on the unfortunate Bullion Van Robbery incident at Abakaliki, Ebonyi State on July 29 which led to the arrest of two suspected dismissed soldiers and other gangsters involved in the act.

“It is necessary to inform the public that the so-called soldiers in the report are not personnel of the Nigerian Army since 2015 and 2018; when both Corporal Ayeni Samuel and Corporal Emeka Harrison were dismissed.

“Available record shows that Dismissed 03NA/53/088 Corporal Ayeni Samuel was dismissed in 2018 for desertion and pipeline vandalism at 174 Battalion.

“The dismissed soldier was attached to 174 Battalion from Command Day Secondary School, Ikeja for United Nations mission in the year 2013. Dismissed Corporal Ayeni deserted the Unit and was later arrested for pipeline vandalism at Ikorodu in Lagos State in 2018.

“In line with Nigerian Army extant rules and regulations, Ayeni was officially tried and awarded dismissed regiment as a Corporal and not Sergeant; as claimed in the online story.

“Also, dismissed Corporal Emeka Harrison was tried and dismissed regiment from 7 Division Garrison, Maiduguri since 2015.”

Nigerian business mogul, Tayo Amusan, has reportedly taken over South African retail giant Shoprite, according to a source close to the deal.

This comes after it emerged that Africa’s largest retailers have initiated process to exit Nigeria, bringing an end to its 15-year stay in the country.

In a trading update published on Monday, Shoprite stated that the decision was reached after

“approaches from various potential investors, and in line with our re-evaluation of the Group’s operating model in Nigeria.”

It added that when it reports its results for the year, its business in Nigeria “may be classified as a discontinued operation.” But a source at the heart of the operation has exclusively told Olisa.tv that Amusan, Chairman of Persianis Limited, owners The Palms Shopping Mall, Lekki would take over the running of the chain of stores.

It is understood that Amusan, who owns shopping malls in Enugu, Kwara and Ibadan, would run the firm for three years after becoming the highest share holder.

He is set to rename it as Jarra.

Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina, ex-Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team has been released from the Kuje Correctional Centre after nine months in incarceration.

Recalls that Maina, who was arraigned before Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Oct. 25, 2019, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside his son, Faisal, and firm, Common Input Property and Investment Ltd., had been in detention at the orders of the judge pending his perfection of bail.

However, his lawyer, Adeola Adedipe, in a telephone interview on Tuesday, said the Maina was finally released on Monday evening after completing the necessary documents for his freedom.

“We can only thank God and this is good for us because we will now have time to prepare for his defence; we will now have good conferencing on the matter.

“We will have a better perspective of what the case is all about. And this will also allow him to treat himself you know he has been very ill to stand the trial,” he said.

Another counsel to Maina, Afam Osigwe, also confirmed that his client had been released from the
correctional centre.

“Yes, Maina came out yesterday (Monday). We have met all the bail conditions but they did not release him until yesterday,” he said, according to NAN.

Justice Abang had, on Jan. 28, varied Miana’s bail conditions, following his inability to meet the bail terms initially granted him on Nov. 26, 2019. Abang reduced Maina’s bail condition from N1 billion to N500 million with a surety in the like sum who must be a serving senator as opposed to the earlier order of producing two serving senators. The judge ruled that the surety, who should not have a criminal case pending in any court, must have a landed property fully developed in Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse II, Katampe, or Central Business Districts of Abuja, with Certificate of Occupancy attached as evidence.

Abang also ruled that the senator though would always come to the court at every adjourned date, the lawmaker only needed to come and sign a court register that would be opened at the registry, among other terms.

However, Maina had been unable to get a senator as surety for his release until Ndume decided to stand in for him. Maina is charged with 12-counts bordering on money laundering and had pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

A Lagos base legal practitioner, Chuks Nnalugha has condemned those calling for zoning in next year`s governorship election in Anambra State.

Speaking in an interview with irukkanews,Nnalugha who is the legal adviser to Anambra State Indigenes Lawyers Forum (ASILF), said that since the governorship has rotated among the three senatorial zones in the state, candidates should start running base on their own personal credentials instead of the zone they hail from. He said that it is heartbreaking that at this time and age, people would still be talking zones where candidates should come from instead of people with competence to transform the state.

According to him,for Anambra to join the league of frontline states in the country,they have to discard zoning and go for competences. He said that former governor Peter Obi was not elected because he hail from Anambra Central but because he was a successful business man and people believed that he had the capacity to transform the state.

According to him, Peter Obi did not disappoint those that saw his credentials and voted him into power. He told irukkanews thus,

“It is disappointing that people should be calling for zoning in a small state like Anambra. Since they are talking about equity and justice. Now all the three senatorial zones have tested the governorship. The power has gone round, so we have got equity and justice. From 2021 onwards, competence, rather than zone should be the watchword. Interested individuals should start running on their own personal credentials and let voters be voting on that ground, instead of where they hail from. Somebody like Peter Obi ran on his personal credentials as a successful business man and people voted for him based on that and never because he came from Anambra Central

Following the claims by the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako that they gave pre notice before sealing business premises located along Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road, Owners of businesses the International
Airport Road have denied the false claims made by the Commissioner during a press and insist that they were not given pre notice before sealing their business premises with evidence.

Salako had said thus during his press conference:

''contrary to the claims of the writer, the enforcement exercise was authorized and carried out in the most civilized manner, sequel to notices to all Lagosians and affected properties to make their planning permits handy for sighting by our enforcement team.”

However, speaking while reacting to the claims of the Commissioner that there was pre- notification, the business owners said that the men of the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority in conjunction with officers of the Nigeria police on Wednesday afternoon stormed their
premises in a commando style and began to seal the premises.

According to them, they were taken unawares because there was nothing like pre-notice. In fact the said notice was been pasted on our walls same time they were sealing. They said that if the Commissioner claimed that business owners in Airport road were given pre-notice before coming to seal their premises, he should make available duplicate of the notice and the channels that
was used in the distribution since they did not receive any.

Achike Onwuasanya whose legal office was sealed said that instead of the commissioner telling lies, he should apologize for the embarrassment that they caused to the people who are trying to survive after COVID-19 has spoiled their means of livelihood. He said that he almost jumped out of the window because of the way the men of the Lagos State Physical Planning Authority stormed his office.

“The commissioner said that they came in a civilized manner. That was a lie. He also said that they gave us pre-notice to keep our planning permit handy. That is also another lie. In Airport road now as I speak about 46 business premises are sealed. For banks, they include two Zenith bank branches, GTB, Access Banks , Polaris bank, Fidelity, First bank, Ecobank, Sky, IBTC and Sterling banks. For hotels, they include Oriental Excel, Golden Tulip, Ibis hotel, Joy Gate Hotel, Ibis Royale, Presken Hotel, Welcome Center Hotel among others. Fedex Courier Company is also on the list. Go there now, you will see their seal signs with date, 22nd of July 2020, even the notice they said they gave us was pasted on our buildings the same time they were sealing.

So do you mean to tell me that if there was pre-notice all this corporate bodies would not comply with the directive of government. Or does it mean that all these buildings would be built without planning permit or that they can constitute illegal structures? So, what they did is a very big embarrassment on respected corporate bodies in Nigeria”.

Contributing, Zikka Thompson, another business owner said that most the buildings that were sealed are what made Murtala Muhammed befitting of an international airport road. He said that Murtala Muhammed Airport road is the gate way to Nigeria adding that it is the corporate offices that adorn the road that has elevated the airport.

According to him, the Commissioner should go and check how the road that leads to the international airports of other countries. He said instead of going backwards, Nigerians should be aspiring to be like the other frontline nations. He also said that government should be sympathetic to business owners along Murtala Muhammed International Airport road because they are among
the worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

“The cordial relationship which is currently existing between the business community in Lagos State and the governor is being tarnished by the action of the commissioner because I am very sure that Sanwo-Olu can never authorize such a raid illegal action especially now that we are still battling with the COVID-19 pandemic. Imagine, after more than four months’ lockdown, we are now witnessing another lockdown. So, somebody wants to create bad image for the governor”
