Nice.  I heard a lot of Obey and Barrister as well, while growing up.  Being more of a traditionalist in my music taste, I am really happy to be rediscovering the earlier ones all over again.  Haruna Ishola - I was familiar with the name, but really didn't remember much of his songs.

Another thing I'd love to see more of is an avenue for the "no-name" Nigerian traditional musicians to get their music out there and gain some fame and more financial reward for their talent and hard work.  For example, we have this drummer/singers that come to our house every holiday and play the most lovely brilliant praise-songs.  With their talking drums and impromptu orikis, it is truly something to witness.  I used to look forward to it every year.

I have a video of one of the bands during the last holiday, but you can see mother in the foreground getting her musical groove on, lol.  If I could edit her owanbe-loving self out, I'd post it. lol.  I wish those travelling musicians had an avenue to get their music to a wider audience, similar to what American no-talents are able to do by inundating Youtube with their karaoke nonsense.

Seriously, eni to l'ori o ni fila, eni to ni fila o l'ori.

TUNDE NIGHTINGALE (1922-1981), A LEGEND FOR ALL TIMES

Tunde Nightingale Western as he was popularly known was born in lbadan in the late 40s. He was a soft spoken and unassuming person who added panache to his image by keeping the legendary singing bird, a Nightingale, in his home.

Unlike the other stars of the era, Tunde Nightingale was an elusive character which helped to create the mystery surrounding him.

He was casual in his approach to life as his dress sense would testify: always dressing in the same style of dress. Highly respected by his fellow musicians, his contemporaries included stars like the legendary I. K. Dairo and Dele Ojo. Tunde Nightingale was credited with the 'Owambe' system which became very popular amongst the corps of Lagos socialites who sponsored him on a tour aboard.

On his return, he signed for the music label, TYC. In his life time he recorded up to 41 LPs. The pioneering nature of his music was to such an extent that modern stars like King Sunny Ade were known to have at one time or the other have played and experimented with his style.

I won't link the site for this info, cos of potential malware, but Wiki has similar info:

You're right, "100% ignore" does not work to get off your back a person set on ruining your day; having a violent, angry and frustrated person in your sanctuary will age you and keep you in perpetual misery.

And who the hell tells a non-violent man to hit a woman to teach her a lesson?  For crying out loud!  Dude, you better not try it. You might find you like it, some wife-beating gene lurking underneath. shocked  tongue

Must Watch! PBS' Frontline investigation into events during New Orleans Katrina tragedy:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/law-disorder/

LAW & DISORDER: An on-air and online investigation into questionable police shootings by the New Orleans Police Department in the wake of Katrina.

Introduction
Henry Glover was last seen alive in the backseat of a white Chevy Malibu on Sept. 2, 2005, just days after Hurricane Katrina hit. Curled up and bleeding from a gunshot wound to the chest, Glover had been rushed to a temporary SWAT compound in the Algiers section of New Orleans by his brother Edward King and a Good Samaritan hoping to get medical attention.

"When I got there, I thought they was going to help us," King says. "But all I hear is, 'Get out the car, get out the car.' So I'm hollering: 'My brother's shot. He's shot.' The first thing they did was put us in handcuffs. And I'm like: 'Why? We're coming for help.'" Glover would soon be dead. Later, his charred remains were discovered on the banks of the Mississippi River, inside a car that had apparently been set on fire. The man who found the grisly scene tells FRONTLINE, "The magnitude of the way [that car] was destroyed, it was telling a story."

Now, five years after the hurricane, FRONTLINE, in partnership with ProPublica and The Times-Picayune, presents Law & Disorder. Beginning with the death of Henry Glover -- a case that has resulted in the indictment of five New Orleans police officers by a federal grand jury -- Law & Disorder digs deep into a number of incidents in which police shot civilians. It raises new questions about the actions of police officers -- and their command structure -- in the aftermath of the catastrophe.

"What happened here in the days after Katrina would call into question whether the mayor and others helped create a climate in which the police felt justified in taking extreme measures to regain control over the city, ultimately setting this chain of events in motion that has completely turned the New Orleans Police Department upside down," says correspondent and ProPublica reporter A.C. Thompson, whose initial investigation of Glover's death sparked the federal probe back in late 2008.

Law & Disorder reveals that, in the midst of post-Katrina chaos, law-enforcement commanders issued orders to ignore long-established rules governing use of deadly force. FRONTLINE reports that in one instance an NOPD captain told a group of officers: "We have authority by martial law to shoot looters."

The order suggests a line was drawn from New Orleans' top officials to officers in the field. Could stealing food, water or a TV now mean a death sentence?

Such a command, taken on its own, violates the intent of rules governing how and when police officers can use their guns. "The standards on deadly force are fairly clear," says Sam Walker, Emeritus Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Nebraska. "An officer can use deadly force where there is a threat to someone's life … or that this person is armed and fleeing and likely to commit another armed offense. That's a very narrow range of situations."

The Glover probe, which has led to charges of murder, obstruction of justice and civil rights violations, is one of at least nine ongoing federal investigations into the NOPD. Most involve actions taken by police in the days after the storm, including the Danziger Bridge incident, in which police shot six civilians, killing two. Five former officers have pleaded guilty to federal charges in connection with the Danziger case thus far.

"People had been in the [Superdome] for several days and there was lawlessness on the street," Sally Forman, then press secretary for New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, tells FRONTLINE in her first television interview about what happened in central command during Katrina. "That's when the mayor says: 'Let's stop search and rescue and bring our force back to controlling the streets. Let's stop the looting, let's stop the lawlessness, and let's put our police officers on the streets, so that our citizens are protected.'"

"I never declared martial law," former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco tells FRONTLINE. "I just decided that we needed to make a very strong statement to calm the media down and to calm the citizenry down … to show that we were in control of the environment."

"I remember at the time [former NOPD] Deputy Police Chief [Warren] Riley walked up in a pair of blue jeans, his uniform shirt and a ball cap, saying that we were not going to allow the looters to take the city; we were going to more or less protect the borders of it and march through downtown and take the city back," says Kevin Diel, a former NOPD officer. "It was a very broad order. What exactly did he mean, you know? Does he expect us, rank and file, to go through the streets, you know, shooting looters? Or how do you take a city that's underwater, you know?"

"We believed that we would lose officers, or were losing officers," Riley ultimately tells FRONTLINE. "We believed that people were shooting at our helicopters initially. That turned out not to be the case."

"The NOPD is a department that is in great need of work," federal prosecutor Jim Letten tells FRONTLINE. "It is in need of restoration, reformation … an absolute complete transformation, which has to happen, if NOPD is to survive as an effective law enforcement agency. . .  I think it's necessary even to the survival of this city."

Syria disqualified from 2014 World Cup
AP – Fri, Aug 19, 2011

ZURICH (AP) — Syria was thrown out of the qualifying tournament for the 2014 World Cup on Friday after fielding an ineligible player. FIFA reinstated Tajikistan in its place.
Despite previously representing Sweden, striker George Mourad played in last month's qualifier against Tajikistan. He scored in the first leg, which Syria won 6-1 on aggregate.
Tajikistan will take Syria's place in Group C of Asia qualifying along with Japan, Uzbekistan and North Korea.
Mourad played for Sweden in qualifying for the 2003 Under-21 European Championship and exhibitions for the country's senior side in 2005.

And why say Mistor, instead of Mister
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

You like school more than any African I’ve seen
Simple thirteen, you still say tharteen
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

They ban the whole team, you can’t even play
Can’t you just say Hi, what is Ki lon sele
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

You barely qualify, then get stuck
President Goodluck but you still suck
Thank God we’re not Nigerians

Instead of Hamburger or Pizza with ham
You eat Egusi with pounded yam
Thank God we’re not Nigerians

Always trying to show off, even when you eat
One soup, no vegetable but twelve different meat
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

Fela was a great Musician, yes of course
but why 27 wifes one red dross
Thank God we’re not Nigerians

You created Nollywood, yes more of it
But too many witches and wizards in your film
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

Always in traditional wear everywhere
Haven’t you hear of Armani wear
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

For example shining five piece agbada
You can look very good in Dolce and Gabbana
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

Not going anywhere fast, let’s just stroll
Traffic everywhere, many bad bad roads
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

No street light from Oregun to Ikeja
Four four, join join two two on okada
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

Extra page in your passport to pass and go
You have learn very well from Obasanjo
Thank God we’re not Nigerians

Oh that’s not fine
Thank God we’re not a Nigerians

My Wife And I Have Fought Again And I Think I Want Out

We have just finished a serious fight and I think it has gone too far now. Today's own was the worst yet. We've been married two years and we live in the U. She tries all kinds of control methods. I'm not even allowed to get angry or the heavens will come down. She will start shouting and cursing until the neighbours come out or call police. I feel trapped. She was not like this when we dated. Now, trouble is not far from the surface, we simply can't disagree amicable. The cursing and shouting is bad enough but the problem is that it gets physical with pushing and shoving and in her case she adds slaps, punches hitting me with objects etc. In all this I have never done this things to her because I know that I might kill her with one touch. I know, I should walk away, but today I tried but she locked us in and hid the key. I also know you shouldn't get involved in any physicality with a woman but sometimes you just get sucked in by the provocation and antagonism - I really tried to leave today.

This is a terrible habit in our relationship. I'm worried that one day, one slap too many, and I'll end up injuring her in a bad way and maybe jail.I have spoken to her people, they have advised her before. She is sorry and quiet for a month and next thing, one small thing and boom. I don't know what else to do, I have exhausted every avenue - I hate to be a failure but divorce might just save our lives.
OP,

You better run!  Surely, life's too short to be so miserable.

Unless you already have children together.  Then it's gonna be misery for the rest of both your lives.  sad

There's always one in the group. lol.

Yes, oga OAM4J, I agree Nigerian accents deserve it's place, maybe even higher, on the list.  tongue

I declare that I have a Nigerian/English/Continental/NONDESCRIPT accent.  What's your point?!  angry  It's very attractive. cool "Sexy"? I don't know.  Is there a way to post one's voice on NL without having to go post video on YouTube first? smiley

Nigerian Accent Ranked Fifth Sexiest In The World By CNN

1) Italian
2) French
3) Spanish
4) Czech
5) Nigerian
6) Irish
  undecided

I agree, FRENCH and ITALIAN languages and accents are very attractive.  French is a precise language, traditional, beautiful, romantic and melodic; Italian is very expressive - men and women both draw you in when they talk.

SPANISH?  CNN is so crap!  Are they talking about Spaniards? Or Latin Americans?  I don't find any Spanish accent attractive.  Not one bit!  grin
True story: i) Took a taxi this afternoon - the driver was Mexican.  Soooo?  Attractive accent?  Not at all.  ii) And I just listened to a voice mail from a Russian friend (how different is a Czech accent from a Russky's?) Eastern European accents don't sound too hot sha.  High-pitched sing-songy in parts but not "sexy"?  All right, she's a girl.  tongue

I imagine most of this survey, if there actually was a survey, and not some CNN intern pulling figures from the sky, are more women's opinion of men's accents.

Just forget about the IRISH brogue.  That's a touch and go.  cheesy

Now, to the daddy of them all!  NIGERIAN accent.  At first, I did a double-take, cos no Nigerian accent would make my original list of top 5, no offense!  Then I thought, seriously, if you start with a process of elimination, I can see how the Nigerian accent would be considered attractive, to the point of ranking 5th (Okay CNN are full of it, but we'll give them a pass here).

Start with the most well-known accents and most populous people in the world:  Is the Indian accent attractive in any way, to anyone, at any time? shocked  Of course not!  grin  What about the German, Aussie, South African or Japanese/Chinese accents?  Assault on my eardrum!  cry

Fact is, Nigerians have a lot of self-confidence; confidence is very attractive (read: sexy) to Yanks, whose women are very likely the main respondents to this non-scientific research.  Considering all these unshakeable facts, I'm quite surprised Naija accent didnt come FIRST.  Ojoro ni o.  cheesy

Soccer Insider: Lionel Messi goal in 88th minute lifts Barcelona against Real Madrid to Spanish Super Cup title, 3-2
Washington Post
Posted at 06:57 PM ET, 08/17/2011

Lionel Messi’s second goal of the match, a 10-yard volley in the 88th minute, lifted FC Barcelona to a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday.

The European titans played to a 2-2 draw in Madrid last weekend.

Newly signed Cesc Fabregas crossed to Messi for the go-ahead strike, just six minutes after Karim Benzema provided the equalizer for Real.

Andres Iniesta scored for Barcelona in the 15th minute, assisted by Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo leveled the match five minutes later before Messi scored his first goal late in the opening half.

The game ended in chaos after Real Madrid’s Marcelo was sent off for taking down Fabregas from behind in front of the benches. Real Manager Jose Mourinho was involved in the scuffle, which spun out of control for several minutes.
