The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of focusing his anti-corruption war on Ijaws from the Niger Delta part of Nigeria. The council also rationalised the activities of oil bunkers and operators of illegal refineries in the Niger Delta, charging the federal government not to stop their activities unless it has alternatives for the participants. The President of the IYC, Udengs Eradiri, who stated this in a chat with journalists in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, claimed that engaging in the illegal activities was a means of livelihood for those involved. He said if the participants are stopped from the illegal activities, it could give rise to another form of militancy in the region, which at its peak prior to 2009 reduced Nigeria’s crude oil production by about 50 per cent. “Much as we support the war against oil theft, it must come with an economic plan as an alternative so that as you are going in to stop them from their way of life, provide an alternative,” he said. “Engage, employ the youths who engage in illegal refining of crude in the creeks. “But when you do otherwise, there will be effects. “That’s why you are seeing the increase in crime rate, robbery is going up, kidnapping is on the increase, they are kidnapping even ice fish sellers now. “It is because when you destroy their means of livelihood and you don’t create any alternative, it is a deliberate ploy to destabilize the Niger Delta so that businesses would not come here.” Like oil like solid minerals The IYC leader also compared illegal crude refining to the illegal mining of solid minerals that occurs in some states in Northern Nigeria. “They say oil theft is economic sabotage, what of the illegal mining that are going on in the north?” he asked. “Is that not worst economic sabotage?” “At a point there was lead poisoning as a result of illegal mining. “The monies that they realize from illegal mining is huge, why do we not have the JTF policing illegal miners, knowing full well that the money realised from gold illegally mined is far much more than money realized from stolen oil.” He alleged that “retired generals have mines of their own in the north, the statistics are there.” “Why are we not talking about those minerals in the north that are illegally mined to the pockets of individuals? Why is it that only Niger Delta oil that is in the pages of newspapers,” he asked. Mr. Eradiri questioned the allocation of crude oil blocs by previous governments, alleging it was against the interest of Ijaws. “We must also investigate how those oil blocks were shared ,did it follow due process?” Leave Diezani alone He also said the recent arrest of Nigeria’s ex-petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, by British authorities for money laundering was a ploy against the Ijaws. “The UK government should stay away from Diezani,” he said “This was how they muscled up and now (Diepreiye) Alamieyeseigha is dead.” “Now they have started with Diezani. They should leave Ijaw People alone. Are there no other governors that have stolen? “Go to UK, almost all the streets are owned by northerners who stole Nigeria money. So why are they just on Goodluck Jonathan’s men, just to demonise Goodluck.” The Ijaw leader alleged that the anti-corruption efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari was targeted at associates of his predecessor especially Ijaws. “As far as we are concerned, the anti-corruption fight is a fight against the Ijaw people,” he said. “Goodluck should have won Nobel Prize for peace. Goodluck deserves a Nobel peace prize, Goodluck deserves respect from Nigerians,” he said in reference to Mr. Jonathan’s decision to peacefully hand over power to Mr. Buhari after the former lost the March 2015 presidential election. Stop TSA The IYC President also stated that the Single Treasury Account is already having a negative toll on the Nigerian economy, adding that projects by the Amnesty Office and the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC are being stifled by it. He said the Amnesty Programme is in jeopardy because the Single Treasury Account system is making it difficult for relevant institutions to carry out their constitutional and statutory functions. “We call on the President to exempt the NDDC from the Single Treasury Account,” he said. “My own understanding is that institutions that are revenue generating organizations, like NNPC,NIMASA,NPA should generate the monies and inject them to a common purse. “Not institutions that are set up particularly for special purposes, like the development of the Niger Delta.” Victimising suspected thieves Mr. Eradiri also condemned the reported cancellation of the Maritime University in Delta State by the present administration. “Today even the institution that was set, such a special institution to build capacity of Nigerians, not only Ijaw people, just as they have police academy in the north, a special institute was set in the south, this vindictive administration have come and cancelled that university. “Nigerians should calculate how much we have spent in capital flight sending our people abroad for special courses in the maritime sector. “A university and programme were set up by Patrick Akpobolokemi (ex-NIMASA boss who is being investigated for graft). Kingsley (Kuku, ex-presidential aide on Amnesty who is being investigated for corruption) brought peace to Niger Delta, stabilized this region, but today what are they paying him with? “These individuals (Messrs Kuku and Akpobolokemi) should be people that would have been rewarded by Nigerians for their service to Nigeria,” Mr. Eradiri said. He also called for the unconditional release of the Radio Biafra broadcaster, Nnamdi Kanu, saying Mr. Kanu and his team were raising fundamental issues similar to the one being raised by the IYC. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/192127-buharis-anti-corruption-war-targeted-at-ijaws-iyc.html |

Kwankwaso spent N4.1billion pension fund to build houses pensioners can’t afford – Official The immediate past Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, spent N4.1 billion of pensioners’ funds building houses the retired workers could not afford, an official has said. The Kano State Commissioner of Information, Mohammed Garba, stated this on a Hausa discussion programme on Freedom Radio on Saturday evening. Mr. Garba said the ex-governor, now Senator, borrowed the N4.161 billion from the pension fund to build Bandirawo and Amana Housing Estates with the aim that the pensioners could benefit from the houses. He added that when the project was completed, the government realized pensioners could not afford housing units in the estates because of the cost. In a state where the minimum wage is below N20,000, the commissioner explained that the least expensive house in the estates was sold for N17 million; with others sold for N18 million, N34 million and N38 million respectively. “When the former governor realized that the houses are too expensive for a pensioner to occupy, he directed that 50 per cent of the price of the houses should be slashed,” the commissioner said. “That is how these houses are being sold now, and despite the 50 percent discount, the price is still high. “The government initially thought that the pensioners could afford the houses, that is the truth,” he added in defense of the previous administration under which the current governor, Umaru Ganduje, served as deputy governor. Mr. Garba said to resolve the complaints of the pensioners, many of who have not been paid their entitlements because of the former administration’s actions, the government had a meeting with the retired workers where it was agreed that a number of housing units in the estates would be allocated to them as part of their entitlements. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/192145-kwankwaso-spent-n4-1billion-pension-fund-to-build-houses-pensioners-cant-afford-official.html |

Nyesom Wike whose election was nullified by the Rivers state petition tribunal yesterday October 24th, has addressed the state in a broadcast. He said irrespective of the tribunal's verdict, he still remains governor of the state. He reaffirmed his position to appeal the Tribunal's decision. Read the full text of his broadcast after the cut. 1. My dear people of Rivers State It is with a profound sense of concern and responsibility that I address you over the judgment of the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal delivered on Saturday, October 24, 2015, purportedly nullifying my election and return as the duly and lawfully elected Governor of our State. 2. We all know that on April 11, 2015, Rivers people in their millions joined the rest of the country and enthusiastically participated in electing their Governor and members of the State House of Assembly. 3. Apart from the reported malfunctioning of the card readers supplied by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which placed no advantage on any of the contestants, the election took place throughout the State and was adjudged both by local and international observers to be largely peaceful, transparent, free, fair and credible. 4. Following the success of the election, I was returned as duly and lawfully elected by the INEC, having satisfied all the necessary legal requirements. 5. However, following the petitions by my friend, the APC gubernatorial candidate and his party, and despite the woeful failure of the Petitioners to discharge the burden of proof with respect to their contradictory, wild and false allegations against the conduct of the election, the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal nullified my election on the basis of INEC’s alleged infraction of its administrative guidelines on the use of card readers. 6. It is common knowledge that INEC’s card readers malfunctioned throughout the country in the 2015 general elections. It is also common knowledge that wherever the card reader malfunctioned, manual accreditation, which is the only process, recognized by the current Electoral Act, was used to accredit voters all over the country. 7. So far I am not aware of any State where the election was postponed as a result of failure of card readers. Furthermore, the Court of Appeal in Agbaje v Ambode clearly stated that the partial or non-use of card readers is not the basis for the cancellation of an election. 8. Yet, against all legal odds and the grains of logic, the Tribunal in its wisdom decided to accord undue legal weight to the straw of statements around the use or non-use of card readers to support its decision in the face of a hopelessly bad case of the Petitioners. 9. As we all know, our judicial system is built on the doctrine of hierarchy of courts in which lower courts are bound by the decisions of courts higher in hierarchy on the same or similar issues. It is therefore strange for the Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal to arrive at a decision that negates subsisting judgments of the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court. 10. Being an implacable believer in the majesty of our judicial system as the last hope of the common man, I have implicit confidence in the ability of the appellate courts to correct the mistakes of the Tribunal and right the wrong that has been done to our collective psyche and aspiration. 11. Accordingly, I have since instructed my team of lawyers to immediately commence the appeal process and have the decision of the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal upturned for good. 12. At this point, I appeal to all our supporters across the state and beyond to remain calm and go about their legitimate duties in a peaceful manner. There is no cause for alarm. 13. By virtue of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, I am still your Governor and will remain your Governor until the exhaustive conclusion of the appeal process at the Supreme Court. 14. Therefore, be assured that your mandate, which you freely gave to the Peoples Democratic Party and my humble self, is intact, safe and secure. God will not allow your mandate to come to naught. 15. I wish to thank the people of Rivers State for the unwavering support I have enjoyed from you since the beginning of the struggle to this moment. I am highly humbled with the show of solidarity from all and sundry and in particular, the confidence in our ability to move the State forward, and the overwhelming satisfaction with what we are already doing as our government to reposition the State. 16. I wish to further assure you that my team and I will not be distracted by this minor irritation. We shall remain focused on our vision and continue to deliver on our fundamental promises on improving security, massive development of infrastructure and socio-economic empowerment in Rivers State. 17. Finally, be assured that by the special grace of God, we shall ultimately prevail over our adversaries, retain our mandate and return the glory to God Almighty our Maker and Refuge. 18. Thank you and May God continue to bless Rivers State http://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2015/10/i-remain-state-governor-wike-says-in.html?m=1 |
