Lagos – A 31-year-old man, Michael David, who allegedly stabbed his wife, Onyinyechi Dennis, to death on Friday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The accused, who resides in Ojoku around Olodi-Apapa, is facing a charge of murder.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the offence was committed on April 7, at No. 24, Ojoku St., Olodi Apapa in Lagos.
Ajayi alleged that the accused stabbed Dennis, his wife, to death with a kitchen knife over allegations of infidelity.
“David confronted the deceased over allegations that she was cheating on him, a fight ensued leading him to stab his wife to death,” he said.
Ajayi noted that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The section prescribes a death sentence for offenders.
The plea of the accused was not taken by the court.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr O.O. Olatunji ordered that the accused be remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons pending the receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).
The case was adjourned till July 17. (NAN)

CHUKWUNONSO Uchegbu, a 55-year-old trader, who allegedly beat his wife's friend to a pulp, on Thursday, appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos State.
Uchegbu, who resides at No. 10, Kayode Lateef Street, Ikorodu, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge bordering on assault and grievous bodily harm.
Prosecutor, Godwin Anyanwu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 23 at about 5.30 p.m. by Decent College, Ikorodu, in Lagos State.
Anyanwu, an ASP, said the complainant, Mrs Grace Nzedinobi, and the accused’s wife were neighbours and friends and that they also belong to the same society in the church.
"The accused confronted the complainant that she is a bad influence on his wife which led to a misunderstanding between them.
"On the fateful day, the complainant went to buy something and met the wife of the accused on her way and the duo exchanged greetings. When the accused saw them, he abused the complainant and threw sand on her face.
"The complainant tried to run away, but the accused held her and gave her blow on her face and then the accused carried a nine-inch block and hit her on the head," he said.
According to Anyanwu, the complainant fainted and was taken to Ikorodu General Hospital by the accused’s wife and some good Samaritans.
He noted that the offences contravened sections 171, 243 and 244 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Soladoye, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to July 17 for mention.

Senators of Like Minds, a group of senators who spearheaded the emergence of Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki as Senate President, yesterday said the country’s oil barons had no hand in the emergence of Saraki.
The senators also said that Saraki’s antecedent was enough testimony to show that he would support the anti-corruption mantra of President Muhammadu Buhari.
This was contained in a statement by the spokesman of the group, Senator Dino Melaye, in Abuja.
Melaye said it was obvious that Saraki is determined and focused to achieve the Senate’s legislative agenda as well as committed to support Buhari to deliver on his promises to Nigerians.
The Kogi West senator added that his statement was informed by a report that “the election of Saraki as the Senate President of the 8th Senate was facilitated by Nigerians associated with dubious claims in the infamous oil subsidy.”
He also said that it was not correct to say that the emergence of Saraki was aimed at sabotaging the anti-corruption posture of President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government.
He noted that it was equally wrong to link what happened on the floor of both chambers of the National Assembly on June 9 to some unnamed ex-ministers of the immediate past administration.
The statement reads in part: “We make bold to state that in the 7th Assembly, Senator Bukola Saraki was Chairman of the Senate Ad hoc Committee, which exposed the fraud and mismanagement in the oil sector.
“Until Saraki’s motion on the floor of the Senate, no one was in the picture of the rot in the sector.
“Therefore, surely, Senator Saraki will be the last person the oil baron will want to see as Senate President.
“In that position, Saraki did not only lead his colleagues in exposing the rot in the scheme, but made very strong recommendations on how the system could be reformed and made corrupt- free.”

Very sad ... Morenikeji is actually a student of GATEWAY ICT POLY, SAAPADE studying SLT before her untimely death. She was found dead at the shrine @akaka, remo north two days ago.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has criticized President Muhammadu Buhari’s for attending the just concluded G7 meeting with a shopping list of Nigeria’s problems.
Mr. Falana spoke Wednesday at a civil society round table on the state of the nation organized by the Nigerians United for Democracy in Lagos.
The group of seven industrialized nations had urged Mr. Buhari to attend the Munich event with a “wish list” for their consideration and assistance.
“Our president went to the G7 and we are happy. And he went there with a bowl, ‘please do this for us, do this for us,'” said Mr. Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
“Again we must interrogate that, has our situation become so bad that we have to ask for external support? When we have not mobilized the energy, the potentials of our people to turn this country around.
“And please, let the new regime be told that the dangerous prescriptions of the IMF and the World Bank and the G7 that we have followed since 1986 that the Structural Adjustment Programme was imposed on Nigeria, those prescriptions have reduced Nigeria to a banana republic. Since then we have been managing poverty, what they call poverty alleviation, not poverty eradication, because this system can never abolish poverty.”
The lawyer called on Nigerians to challenge the government over its choice of economic policies.
“There are alternative economic programmes to the ones that are forced on Nigerians every time,” Mr. Falana said.

“It’s either its privatization, which is the selling of our public assets, or retrenchment or downsizing of workers, or trade liberalisation so that all manner of goods are brought to our country to destroy our industries.
“And that is what has happened today, all the textiles industries in Kaduna and Kano and Aswani all of them are gone. All those warehouses in Oregun, Apapa, and the rest were for storing goods produced locally. Now they are all becoming churches and event centres.”
On some states’ inability to pay their workers, Mr. Falana blamed it on the indolence of their governors.
“I’ve seen our media in the last week trying to concentrate all attention on Osun State, whereas Osun is owing six months,” said Mr. Falana.
“There are states that are owing 9-10 months. I’m not saying this to justify what is going on. Please, can we have a broader perspective with respect to the management of the affairs of our country?”
In his presentation, Henry Boyo, an economist, noted that the cost of fuel importation to fuel marketers, including local charges, is N137 per litre, according to the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency.
When subsidy, at N50.93 per litre, is deducted, the selling price comes down to the official N87 per litre.
“The question is what happens if we are to produce in Nigeria without bringing it from abroad?” Mr. Boyo asked.
“The only way we can determine that is to start with the C & F element which we determined earlier as N110, and we also subtract five percent from that. Five percent is a huge provision, it should not be up to five percent, maybe one or two percent.
“But let’s be liberal and take that amount of N5.52 from 110, you’ll get a price of about N104.82 per litre. In addition to that you’ll still have to pay the miscellaneous but you will not be paying the bridging fund, bridging fund is a form of subsidy. And you’ll have a total N9.34, plus the N104 to bring N114 per litre.”
Mr. Boyo said that although the N114 per litre is still above the regulated price of N87 per litre, it is still cheaper to produce fuel locally than to import, noting that the significance would be that there would no longer be subsidy payment.
He also said that it is not realistic to expect cheaper petrol prices if there are refineries all over the place.
“If the Naira appreciates by 50 percent (at N100 to $1), the unsubsidised price of petroleum products will be N52.41. But then if you still have to pay the retailers and transporters and dealers and bridging fund, you will have N9.34, at the end of the day you’ll have a pump price of N61.75,” he said.
“If on the other hand, the Naira depreciates from N200 per dollar to N400 per dollar, the same thing that costs N61.75 will now cost N218.98 per litre.”
Monday Ubani, the immediate past president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja branch, called on Nigerians to rise up against corruption.
“No single fight was waged under the last dispensation against corruption and corrupt practices. Agencies like the EFCC and ICPC that were created by law to fight and end corruption were purposely and brazenly crippled,” said Mr. Ubani.
“It got to a stage under this last dispensation that another name for Nigeria was corruption, so he has come to fight corruption.”
Mr. Ubani said that most Nigerians voted for President Buhari in the last election because of his pedigree against corruption.
“Though his assets are yet to be declared publicly, the information at the disposal of some of the persons close to him indicate that he’s a man of moderate means despite positions of authority and lucrative assignments he has carried out on behalf of the Nigerian state in the past,” he said.
“He was a governor, a minister of petroleum resources, a head of state, and chairman Petroleum Trust Fund that he could have used to enrich himself.
“There is corruption in the public sector and the private sector. In the public sector we have the corruption of the political elites or the political class which is very pervasive, destructive and harmful.
“We have the corruption of the civil service, which more deadly and possesses the potency of mass destruction of anything both living and non-living.”

1. You Are Afraid To Lose Him/Her:
Using fear as a reason to get married is completely wrong. If you are that unsure of your relationship, then being apart is simply a better bet.

You will always have family members or friends that put pressure on you to to settle down because they think it is time.

You need to realize that these people would not be in the marriage with you and they certainly would not directly feel the consequences of a broken marriage. Only take this step because you think it is time.

Yes, yes, the infamous biological clock is ticking away and reminding you that you are running out of time.

But, you should know that once you are in a bad marriage, you would be so much worse off and wished you had waited for the right person as opposed to settling for the wrong person because you think time was running out.

4. You Feel You Owe Him/Her:
Did he pay your way through school? Did she hang in there through your strip club days and your cheating ways? Getting married because you feel you owe your partner a debt is also a terrible idea.

Get married because you absolutely and completely want to and you would feel much more satisfied with your choice.

5. For Material Security:
This does not just refer to women who settle down with rich men just because they do not want to worry about money.

These days, some men actually choose to go for women from rich homes/background, perhaps due to promises of wealth from the woman’s parents or the feeling that the woman can solve any money-related problems that come up.

Such marriage would not work out because one person will no doubt feel used and might decide to act out or be disrespectful.

6. You Are Bored:
You should also not get married simply because you have nothing else going on in your life. Do not just assume that marriage would provide you all the companionship you need simply because you are uncomfortable with your own company.

Focus on your personal growth, find a hobby, start a business, grow your career, and when the time is right, you would meet your true partner.

7. To Get Over An Ex:
Did you just hear that your ex has gotten married? Did you just go through a terrible break-up and you think jumping into a lifetime commitment will heal your broken heart?

Well, this is really wrong. When you do eventually get over the ex (and you will) all you would be left with is a partner you do not love and the feeling of total regret.

8. Pregnancy:
Just because you are pregnant, or she is pregnant for you is not enough reason to commit to forever.

This might sound like a good solution at first but in the marriage, you would notice your partner is simply a mother/father to the child and not a wife/husband to you since the child is the only foundation of your relationship.

9. You Have Been Dating Forever:
So you have been together for years and years and tying the knots seems like the perfect solution. Sometimes, it isn’t.

When it is time to decide marriage, take another look at your relationship and consider how it will change if you make it official and bring children into it.

Be as honest as possible with yourself and your partner. Do not just start planning a wedding because you think that is the next step.

10. All Your Friends Are Doing It:
As humans, we cannot help but compare ourselves to our mates as we progress. We worry about making sure we are where we think we are supposed to be because all our friends are already there. But marriage is a completely personal decision.

Just because everyone around you seem to be jumping in does not mean you should just close your eyes, pick someone and jump in too. Take your time and make sure you, and you alone feel you are ready for the step before taking it.

11. Your Families Get Along:
You might have started dating someone because he/she is a family friend or because your families get along perfectly, but this is no reason to make vows to be loyal and faithful to him/her forever. Make sure you are doing it because you both feel ready, in love, and connected with each other

12. You Think It Is The Next Step:
You just completed your education, or you just got that big promotion at work. You just bought your first home or you just hit a particular age. Whatever your reason, do not get married just because you think it is the next thing to do. Marriage should not be on some to-do list that you have.

A lot of individuals have married without being prepared emotionally, mentally, spiritually, psychologically and materially and as a result, marriage vows are not kept and thereby a collapse of the union.
