Foreign AffairsXenophobia: Nigeria Union Reports New Attacks In South Africa by Islie(op): 9:56pm On Jun 16, 2015
The Nigerian Union in South Africa on Tuesday reported new xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other foreigners in Sternkopf, Namakwa Municipality, Northern Cape Province of South Africa.
The President of the Union, Ikechukwu Anyene, said in Pretoria, South Africa, that the Northern Cape Province Chapter Chairman of the Union reported the incident to its National Secretariat.
“The National Secretariat of Nigeria Union has received report of xenophobic attacks from Mr Kennedy Osagie, the Northern Cape Province chapter chairman of the union.
“The report indicated that South Africans attacked Nigerians.
“Two cars belonging to Nigerians have been reportedly burnt and they have been going from house to house looting and destroying their property,” he said.
Mr. Anyene, who said that there were 20 Nigerians living in the affected community, added that none had been reported dead in the incident.
“Six Nigerians have taken refuge with their families in nearby SpringBok community and they do not know the whereabouts of the other Nigerians,’’ he said.
He said that the Union had reported the incident to the Nigerian Consulate in South Africa.
Nigeria’s Consul General in South Africa, Uche Ajulu-Okeke, confirmed the incident, saying the mission had commenced investigations.
“The Nigerian Consulate in South Africa has received report of new xenophobic attacks in Northern Cape Province of South Africa.
“The mission has commenced investigation into the incident and will ensure that Nigerians are safe in South Africa,” she said.
South Africa was hit by a wave of deadly xenophobic attacks between March and April 2015, with locals attacking and killing at least five African migrants.
The tension subsided after widespread condemnation.

PoliticsAPC Should Be Thankful We Didn't Take Over The Entire Senate Leadership: PDP by Islie(op): 9:31pm On Jun 16, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso of making incendiary comments which old destabilize the national assembly.

The party was responding to an interview granted by the governor in which he advised senate president Bukola Saraki not to allow his ambition destroy the APC which many have laboured to build. He described the PDP as a dead party in the interview.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh responded to Kwankwaso in a statement on Tuesday, expressing shock by “the hate statement from Senator Kwankwaso wherein he used offensive language on the PDP and its members in the National Assembly.”

The party said it was “taken aback by the venom and bitterness in the statement especially coming from a former governor, an elected senator, a highly respected former member of the PDP, who also benefited hugely from the party as minister and two-time state governor.”

The PDP said it would have wished not to join issues with politicians who grew their political profile in the party no matter where they are at the moment, but regretted that “Senator Kwankwaso went too far in declaring the party dead just because he is aggrieved that the Senate Presidency did not go his way.”

It said it was “indecorous, mischievous and misleading for anybody to declare a party with an enviable history as the PDP, with 14 state governors, 47 Senators and hundreds of members in the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly dead.”

“Where was Senator Kwankwaso when a party he claimed was dead defeated his choice candidate in the Senate? Was it a dead party that was able to do what according to Kwankwaso, no other party could do in the 16 years of PDP control of the National Assembly?

“Indeed, we found it very baffling that such unguarded statement came from a person who contested for the high office of the president of Nigeria.

“Statements from such personalities should be decorous, statesmanly and focused on the national interest instead of promoting acrimony and division in the polity. This unfortunate outburst is well below Senator Kwankwaso’s character and status and we urge him to desist from such”, the PDP said.

The party underlined that Senator Kwankwaso and other APC leaders should rather be grateful to PDP senators for being disciplined and not using their preponderance at the inauguration to take the entire leadership of the Senate following the opening created by the APC leaders in convening a meeting of senators-elect at the same time fixed for the election of the leaders of the National Assembly.

PoliticsBuhari's One-term Pledge Tears APC Leaders Apart by Islie(op): 2:20pm On Jun 15, 2015
· Jimi Agbaje, Akpabio visit Atiku as political realignments begin
· PDP to field northern candidate

The pledge by President Muhammadu Buhari to serve only one term is responsible for the whirligig into which the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), and indeed the political class in the country have been thrown, the Daily Times can authoritatively report.
If not quickly resolved, the intrigues may make governing Herculean in the next for years, as politicians of different ideological backgrounds are forging informal alliances.
Two-time Governorship candidate in Lagos, Mr. Jimmy Agbaje, and former Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio recently paid separate visits to the Abuja residence of former Vice President Abubakar Atiku in what is believed to be linked to the politics of 2019.
It was learnt last night that apart paying the APC back in its own coin, the decision of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to support any candidate put forward by the ruling party for the positions of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, has serious link to the 2019 Presidential contest.
According to sources within the ruling party, "the decision of President Buhari not to run in 2019 is already tearing the party into shreds as potential aspirants for the office are already mobilizing across parties and geo- political zones to forge a realignment for the contest."
The visit by Akpabio and Agbaje to the Abuja residence of Atiku, according to information pieced together in Abuja, is the beginning of the much-expected realignment and coming together of former PDP political heavy weights across the nation before the commencement of the onslaught on the factionalized APC.

It was also gathered that the visit to the residence of Atiku by the Senate President Bukola Saraki, shortly after being sworn, was a confirmation that Atiku was one those who pulled the strings for his success at election.
Atiku, it was reliably gathered is still eyeing the presidency and the decision of Buhari to run for one term has further given the Adamawa politician the verve to start making contacts across party divides.
It was further learnt that the main reason the APC national leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reportedly moved against Saraki was because of the strong opposition of Saraki to Tinubu's nomination of Professor Yemi Osibanjo as the then running mate to Buhari.
Saraki it was learnt, campaigned vigorously for former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi for the position of the Vice President. It took the intervention of former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his Abeokuta mansion for peace to peace to reign.
Daily Times also learnt that the graveyard silence maintained by the former Rivers state governor on the National Assembly election was intended to spite Tinubu who was instrumental to the scuttling of his vice presidential ambition.
Apart from that, the Tinubu camp up till press time is still not comfortable with the Saraki occupation of the office of the Senate President. The reasoning in the camp is that a Saraki Senate presidency for four years would be too strong for them to overrun in 2019 since President Buhari has decided not to run in 2019.
In the unfolding political scenario, the battle line appears drawn between Atiku and Tinubu. Already there are reported moves by Tinubu to truncate the emergence of Atiku as the chairman of the BoT of the party, while Atiku on the other hand is pushing for the leadership of the party using different fronts within and outside the party.
The PDP as a party, it was reliably learnt, is not left out of the scheming and permutations for the 2019 elections. The party, according to impeccable sources within the party, has dispatched its foot soldiers across the six geo political zones to mobilize and talk to party members and non-party members on the need to return power to the party in 2019 because of what they described as the false start of the APC since May 29.

PoliticsSaraki Holds Peace Talks With Aggrieved Senators by Islie(op): 2:58am On Jun 15, 2015
Senate President Bukola Saraki has started reaching out to the All Peoples Congress leadership and colleagues opposed to his emergence as the head of the National Assembly.

A senator loyal to him, Rafiu Ibrahim, made this known in Abuja on Sunday just as The PUNCH learnt that the APC leadership decided to soft-pedal on its initial opposition to the outcomes of the National Assembly leadership elections in order to stave off rebellion by its lawmakers.

Ibrahim said, “We are currently meeting with our colleagues in the Senate. Apart from the fact that the Senate President has been meeting with those who are aggrieved , we, members of the Like Minds Senators are also engaging them on one-on-one basis.

“We are also meeting with our party leadership and I think the peace moves are achieving good result. It is in the interest of everybody that we have a united Senate.”

Some members of the Senate Unity Forum who are loyalists of Senator Lawan, also confirmed that Saraki and some of his supporters were making overtures to them.

The senators, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity because their leaders had barred them from granting interviews on the issue were, however, silent on whether the Saraki group offered them anything in return for their support.

A ranking senator from one of the South-West states said Saraki personally discussed with him on the matter.

He said, “It is true that the Like Minds Senators have been talking with us to support the leadership of Saraki but we told them that we are not having any personal issues with the Senate president and his deputy, Ekweremadu.

“We are upholding the sanctity of our political party and its leadership. We have told them our conditions for mutual relationship and cooperation. It is left for them to take appropriate actions.”

Another senator from the South-West also explained that the SUF members would meet this week to review the reply of their party’s leadership to their conditions.

The group had through its spokesperson, Senator Kabiru Marafa, said it was demanding the immediate resignation of Ekweremadu and the investigation of the Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa, for his role in the June 9 Senate inauguration.

Our correspondents however gathered in Abuja on Sunday that the APC leaders opted to sheathe their sword after the Presidency reportedly intervened in the matter.

The APC had in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, on Tuesday described the victory of Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as “unacceptable.”

Saraki, a former Kwara State governor, beat APC choice, Ahmed Lawan, to clinch the post while Dogara defeated Femi Gbajabiamila.

Describing Saraki and Dogara’s decisions to defy its directive and vie for the posts as an act of “monumental indiscipline and betrayal,” the party vowed to sanction them in accordance with the provisions of its constitution.

However, after a series of consultations, the National Chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun, on Friday announced that they were ready to work with Saraki and Dogara.

A prominent member of the APC,who pleaded for anonymity, explained to one of our correspondents that what Odigie-Oyegun said represented the position of the party’s National Working Committee.

He added that the APC was aware that if it kept to its hard line on the matter, the National Assembly members who backed Saraki and Dogara might rebel against it (APC).

The party member said, “We have to live with the reality that Saraki and Dogara are the new leaders of the National Assembly. We don’t want a rebellion from our Senators and House members.

“However, those who defied us and did what they did will face a panel which will give them fair hearing before a disciplinary action.”

Asked what the disciplinary action would be, he replied, “Even a warning is a form of sanction.

“We have no intention to open ourselves up to what the Peoples Democratic Party did to itself in the case of (Aminu)Tambuwal .

“When he (Tambuwal) emerged against their (PDP) will, instead of finding a way to manage it, they alienated him until he left them with a lot of his colleagues to join us (APC). We will not allow this to happen to us.”

The party source also revealed that as part of efforts to further douse tension, Saraki and Dogara would be prevailed upon not to sideline their defeated colleagues.

Towards this end, they are expected to concede the chairmanship of some of choice committees in both the Senate and the House to members of the other camp.

When asked if indeed Saraki had waved the Olive branch before the party’s leadership and if indeed it had accepted to work with Saraki and Dogara, the APC spokesman, referred him to Odigie-Oyegun.

But calls to the mobile telephone number of Odigie-Oyegun were neither picked nor returned.

However, The PUNCH learnt that the leadership of the APC had taken a position that the remaining seats in the House of Representatives like the Majority Leader, Chief Whip, Deputy Leader and Deputy Whip, were party seats.

Another top APC member said, “The party has come into these positions because they are party seats and the party reserves the power to share it to the zones.

What we hear is that, to calm nerves, Femi Gbajabiamila(the defeated APC choice candidate for the House speakership) will be the majority leader, while a member from Kano State, Mr. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, will be his deputy.

“Monguno will likely be the chief whip while Pally Iriase from Edo State, will deputise for him.”

But a former House spokesman and influential member of the 8th Assembly, Zakari Mohammed, said that replacing an elected presiding officer with another person was not possible.

Mohammed noted that it was likely that people were making speculations in view of the outcomes of the elections.

But he parried a question on what role the House or the party would assign to Gbajabiamila.

“I don’t know, I can’t comment on that one,” he said.

FamilyFamily Loses 3 Children To Inferno In Lagos[Photo] by Islie(op):
Three children of the same parents on Saturday night died in an inferno that destroyed their apartment in Egbeda-Akowonjo area of Lagos State.
The fire, caused by candle light, occurred at about 10 p.m., at No 20, Fakoya Street, Vulcaniser Bus Stop, Egbeda Akowonjo.
The three kids have been identified as Ifeoma, 9; Emeka, 7; and Udeoma, 3.

The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Razak Fadipe, confirmed this in Lagos on Sunday.
Mr. Fadipe said that the fire broke after the father of the children had gone to check his wife, the mother of the children, in the hospital, where she had just given birth to their fourth child.
He said that the fire service was not called to the scene on time, and advised people to stop the use of candle in their houses.
“We got a distress call and when we got there, we discovered that, it was a building that was on fire.
“The building is located at No 20, Fakoya St, . Vulcaniser Bus Stop, Egbeda Akowonjo, a suburb of Lagos.
“The fire was caused by a candle, which was lit by their father, while he went to see his wife and the family’s new baby in the hospital,” he said.
Mr. Fadipe said that the charred body of the dead children had been removed to a mortuary by the police from Shasha Division.
The fire service boss appealed to people in Lagos to desist from using candle in their homes, as it could be very dangerous.

PoliticsSouth East Right To Vote PDP, Says Ekweremadu by Islie(op): 12:32am On Jun 14, 2015
Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, said yesterday that the decision of the majority of the people of the South East to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was appropriate in the circumstance.
He said that given another opportunity, the people would vote in the same manner.

Addressing his supporters on arrival at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, Ekweremadu said he decided to take another shot at the position of Deputy Senate President when it appeared the people of the zone were about to be sidelined in the scheme of things following the last elections.
The Deputy Senate President, who is also the Speaker of ECOWAS parliament, urged his fellow senators and all political office holders to settle down for business to deliver the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.
He advised President Muhamadu Buhari to accommodate all Nigerians irrespective of party and ethnic inclination.
He said:”We have no regrets. The Igbo have no regret for the way they voted; if they have the opportunity tomorrow they will do it again.
“We are convinced we voted rightly, and because we believe we are part and parcel of this country, we believe what we got is within our right. So we expect that APC should be able to accommodate the people of the South South as they form their government, because don’t forget that Buhari got about 15 million votes; we have more than 150 million Nigerians, so he is not the president of 15 million people; the rest of the people must be accommodated.
“In fact, that was why, when we saw that it appeared that the South East and South South were being marginalised in the scheme of things, we decided to take a shot so that our people would be part and parcel of the government so that every part of Nigeria will have a sense of belonging.
“I’m very delighted to be among my people that have come to receive me after I was honoured by the entire senators of the Federal Republic Nigeria; I’m honoured by the people of Nigeria and my people, the great Igbo people, were also honoured by the people of Nigeria, PDP was also honoured by the people of Nigeria.
“So I’m here coming home to my root, and I’m happy that they are here to receive me. We have finished with politics, now is time for governance; we should put politics behind and move on; this country is bigger than any political party, so let’s work together as a people to ensure that we deliver dividends of democracy to the people of Nigeria,” he said.

Family‘My Wife Is Pregnant For Someone Else' - Husband Tells Court by Islie(op): 5:23pm On Jun 12, 2015
A businessman, Samson Muse, yesterday urged an Ojo Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his three-year-old marriage because his wife is carrying another man’s pregnancy.
Muse said his wife, Tunrayo is unfaithful, adding that such a woman should not be seen as his wife.
“My wife fights a lot, uses dangerous weapons to attack me, she is too troublesome, does not take care of our son, I’m no longer in love with her.
“A woman that sleeps about with different men is not worthy to be a wife; in fact, the seven month-old pregnancy she is carrying is from an unknown source.
“I cannot live with a woman who has become promiscuous, sleeping around, in fact, she has become too troublesome and does not have any regard for me,’’ Muse said.
He said he would obey the court’s order to pay N30,000 monthly feeding allowance for their two-year-old son to ensure the divorce.
“I need this court to dissolve our marriage and also grant me permission to be in possession of my son because she cannot take good care of him.
“My son, legally named Faruk is currently referred to as ‘Park well’ at the motor parks, I cannot take it any longer, I need quick action,’’ he said.
Tunrayo, 38, however, denied Muse’s claims, saying her husband abandoned her and she had to seek help from other men.
“My husband does not take care of me, he has carried out deals of over N2 million in my presence. His sister is the Deputy Iyaloja of Okoko Market, yet he cannot even pay my dowry, I cannot say who owns this pregnancy, but I cannot release my son to him,’’ she said.
The court’s president, Chief Joseph Ogunmola, advised the husband to keep his promise of giving feeding allowance to his son.
Ogunmola adjourned the case till June 29 for judgment.
