PoliticsBorno APC In Disarray Over Late Senator Zannah’s Replacement by Islie(op): 11:39am On Jun 12, 2015
Following the demised of Borno Central Senator, late Ahmad Khalifa Zannah of the All Progressives Congress, leadership of the party, DAILY POST gathered has been planning to impose a sole candidate on the party at the detriment of others, a situation which has resulted to open challenge of the leaders on Thursday. Those challenging the alleged imposition have argued that level playing field was the only way to make peace among party members.

Party stakeholders who addressed a press conference on Thursday, said they were not going to bow to pressure from any quota, and would not anoint a particular candidate even if the State governor has ordered so. They stated that, the ongoing crisis at the National Assembly was a pointer that the party would lose grip of power due to selfish and undemocratic ways of its leadership.

A communique issued at the end of a well attended Borno central stakeholder meeting of the party at Barwee Hotel, Maiduguri, said, scores of party chieftains have shown interest in the seat, but the leaders of APC in the state including the governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima were said to be considering anointing a candidate.

Members at the stakeholders meeting insisted that the party leaders should know that if an unpopular candidate emerges the torch bearer, the party may lose in the election proper to the opposition.

“We call on our national leaders to sustain internal democracy for which the party is known for, by ensuring level playing ground to all aspirants in the party in the upcoming Borno central senatorial primary election. We call on our state party leader, Governor Shettima to avoid imposition of any aspirant on party members. We have all seen the level of damage imposition can do in the just concluded leadership elections of the National Assembly.” The Communique reads.

CrimeResidents Nab Man For Alleged Money Ritual (PICTURE) by Islie(op): 8:10am On Jun 09, 2015
A man accused of engaging in money ritual has been handed over to the police by residents of Iresi Street, in the Orile-Agege area of Lagos.

The suspect, who was identified only as Mohammed, was alleged to have moved around the area on Saturday, pretending to be mentally-challenged.

PUNCH Metro learnt that a woman, Mrs. Olawumi Alani, who sells confectionery, alerted her neighbour, Mrs. Grace Ogedengbe, to his presence.

It was gathered that Mohammed initially pretended he understood only Hausa and declined response when Alani requested to know who he was looking for.

Our correspondent learnt that he later confided in Ogedengbe, who also speaks Hausa, that he needed human parts and was directed to the area by a friend.

He was reportedly chased away by the women. But on Sunday, he appeared again and was challenged by some youths who recovered some charms from him and handed him over to the police.

Alani said, “He was here on Saturday, looking inside houses. He later came to buy a sachet of water. I told my neighbour, Mama Benita (Ogedengbe), that the man was just pretending to be mad. Shortly after, he approached me and spoke in Hausa. I called Mama Benita, who understands his language to speak with him. He asked her that he was looking for a place in our area, where he could get human blood and parts. We told him to leave or else he would be lynched.

“When I came back from church on Sunday, I saw him again hanging around the street. He was in a brown clothes, different from what he wore on Saturday. I became more suspicious and alerted some boys. At that moment, he said in English that he would implicate me if he was arrested. Charms, and a ring were recovered from him and he was taken to the station.”

Ogedengbe said she was astounded when Mohammed told her of his mission in the area.

She said, “He said he was directed here by a friend. I was shocked when he explained that it was blood of a child that he actually needed and that he wanted to use it to make money. We did not take him serious until he came back on Sunday.”

Another resident, who identified himself only as Dammy, said the charms were discovered after they ordered the suspect to UnCloth.

He said, “We were afraid of touching him because we did not know what he had on him. We ordered him to UnCloth and that was when we saw different kinds of charms on his body. We took him to the Elere Police Station.”

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident.

“There was a report of such nature. The man has been arrested and he is in custody. However, no human part was recovered from him. Investigations are still ongoing,” he said.

PoliticsPDP Suspends 2 For Diverting Jonathan’s Campaign Fund by Islie(op): 11:28am On Jun 08, 2015
The chairman and secretary of People Democratic Party (PDP) Shiroro local government area of Niger State, Alhaji Iro Kurebe and Ibrahim Isah respectively, have been suspended by the ward chairmen for allegedly diverting former president Goodluck Jonathan campaign fund meant for 184 polling units in the area.

In what seems to be the outcome of the review of the poor outing of the party in the last election, the 14 PDP ward chairmen of the area accused the two officials of the party of diverting N3 million meant for the presidential campaign in the area for the last general election.

The suspension of the chairman and secretary was contained in a two-page resolution, copied to the zonal and state chapters of the party and made available to journalists yesterday. It was signed by the 14 ward chairmen.

The letter read in part, “during presidential election conducted in March 2015, each polling unit was to get N10,000 and we have 184 units making N10,000 by 184 totalling N1.840 million. The two party officials also collected N1.5 million from deputy chairman of the party, Barr Tanko Beji. The money was meant for campaign of PDP in the area”.

The letter alleged further that “the chairman and secretary illegally deducted N391,000 from the monthly allowances given local government and ward executives without our consent. The then deputy governor candidate, Kantigi supported the party with N1.2 million, including motorcycles also from Hajiya Jumai Babangida Aliyu but all these went into thin air”.

The ward chairmen said the party has began reorganising and restructuring ahead 2019 election and would therefore not allow people with questionable character to hold any executive position in the party because they were the cause of the failures of the party.

PoliticsSenate Presidency: Buhari Tasks APC Leaders As Party Meets Senators-elect Today by Islie(op): 6:17am On Jun 06, 2015
•Lawan, Saraki intensify lobby
•Reconciliation tops agenda of meeting

President Muhammadu Buhari has a big task for the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of today’s meeting with the party’s Senators-elect: ensure that the choice of Senate President creates no crisis in the rank and file.
Two prominent members of the party – Alhaji Ahmed Lawan and Dr.Bukola Saraki are locked in a tricky battle for the position.
Each side claims more support in the Senate than the other.
Buhari has declared that he will not take sides with any of the candidates or pick a preference because “they are two brothers.”
Party sources said last night that reconciliation will top the agenda at today’s meeting.
Senators Lawan and Saraki are intensifying their campaign ahead of the election of the president of the 8th Senate.
The Senate is scheduled for inauguration on Tuesday.
A source said the race for the Senate Presidency featured at the recent meeting between Buhari and APC leaders.
“You know the President met during the week with APC leaders. Although the meeting was behind closed doors the issue of Senate Presidency came up,” the source said.
“At the session, Buhari charged the leaders to get a few things done in such a way that it will not lead to rancour between the candidates. He said after all, ‘they are two brothers.’
The source added: “At the meeting with APC leaders, Buhari insisted that he will not point at any of the two candidates and dictate who should be the President of the Senate.

“But he told them a few things to do to make peace between Lawan and Saraki.”
It was also gathered last night that the APC leadership in prioritizing reconciliation at today’s meeting had been working on the Lawan-Akume and Saraki groups to attend the heart-to-heart session in Abuja.
One of the two groups has agreed to take part in the shadow election planned by the party, while the other is not favourably disposed to it.
Investigation revealed that the party leadership was uncomfortable with the possible negative effect the wrangling over Senate Presidency may have on the unity of the party.
The party’s leadership was said to be touched following the latest development which has led to governors, elders and APC chieftains being divided along partisan lines.
A highly-placed source said: “There is too much tension in the party on the choice of the next President of the Senate. The APC leadership will not join the fray instead, it will broker peace.
“So, as we prepare for the session, reconciliation is top on the card. We want to appeal to the Lawan-Akume and Saraki groups to consider the contest as a “family issue.”
“What you should expect on Saturday (today) is a trouble-shooting session. We want the 8th Senate to convene in peace.”
Responding to a question, the source said: “If we are able to reconcile, we will go to the inaugural session of the 8th Senate as a united party.”
Another source said: “The party’s reconciliatory intervention became necessary following the rejection of shadow primaries by one of the two groups.
“So, we do not want these differences to widen .”

TravelOver 120 Escape Death As Aero Aircraft Develops Fault Mid-air by Islie(op): 3:49am On Jun 06, 2015
Over 120 passengers, including the Director, Muslim Rights Concern, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, on Friday evening escaped death as an Aero Contractors Airline Flight 180 from Lagos to Kaduna developed technical fault mid-air.

The aircraft was said to have suddenly lost altitude, 20 minutes after it departed the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, forcing the aircraft to wobble in the air for over one hour before it was eventually diverted to Abuja.

Akintola, who broke the news to New Mail, said the flight took off from Lagos at exactly 6.30pm.

He said 20 minutes into the flight, the aircraft lost altitude and the passengers had to make use of the oxygen masks as the plane continued to wobble, while dropping steadily.

Akintola said, “The plane lost altitude 20 minutes after takeoff. We had to make use of the oxygen masks. We saw smoke outside the plane, probably coming from the engine compartment.

“At this time, the whole plane was thrown into commotion. Many passengers screamed and some fainted. Prayers upon prayers were offered. Some shouted Allah, others Jesus.”

Akintola said it was in the midst of the commotion that the crew, whom he commended for their professionalism and unusual calmness, announced that the plane would be diverted to Abuja.

He said, “While the pilot was making the announcement of the flight diversion, I noticed that his voice was trembling. He told us that Abuja was 120 miles away and that we would land in 25 minutes. But we were not sure we would make it.

“In fact, I quickly recited the Kalimah (the Quranic invocation of the oneness of Allah), believing that the end had come,” Akintola added in messages to New Mail.

He said that the plane finally touched down in Abuja at about 9.00pm and upon landing in Abuja, the officials of the airline told the devastated passengers that the fault would be hurriedly repaired and that the plane would proceed to take them to Kaduna, their original destination.

As of the time he spoke with New Mail at about 9.30pm, he said he was already in a taxi taking him from Abuja to Kaduna as he could not risk being “flown in the same aircraft that was divinely saved from crashing.”

Akintola said, “As I am talking to you, I am now in a taxi taking me to Kaduna. They said they wanted to repair the plane and that we should wait so it takes us to Kaduna. Allah forbids. They asked how many of us wanted to disembark and almost everybody came out.”

When Saturday PUNCH called Akintola at about 11pm, he confirmed the incident and said he was about entering Kaduna.

He said, “When the aircraft wanted to land in Abuja, the tyres failed to come out on time and that again caused more commotion among passengers. At last, we landed at about 7.35, about 50 minute of trauma mid-air.”

A statement by the airline read, “Aero confirms that there was depressurisation in the aircraft cabin leading to the dropping of oxygen mask. And since Aero has a maintenance facility in Abuja, the flight to Kaduna was diverted to Abuja this evening to fix the problem.”

The General Manager, Public Affairs, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Fan Ndubuoke, said he had yet to be briefed on the matter.
