PoliticsBuhari Restores Expelled Journalist’s Accreditation by Islie(op):
The accreditation tag of the State House correspondent of German Radio, Deutsche Welle, Mr. Ubale Musa, which was withdrawn by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan was restored on Monday.

According to a statement from the office of the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the development was on the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Musa had his accreditation withdrawn in the last days of the Jonathan administration for asking visiting Chadian President, Idriss Derby, a question the former President and his handlers considered to be embarrassing.

While presenting the re-issued Press Pass to Ubale at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Adesina said the re-accreditation of the correspondent was in keeping with Buhari’s commitment to correcting the wrongs of the past.

“Part of the change promised by President Buhari is correcting things that were wrongly done before.

“Mr. Ubale Musa’s accreditation was wrongly withdrawn. To redress the wrong done to him by the withdrawal, we have returned his Villa Press Pass to him so that he can continue his work without hindrance,” Adesina said.

In his brief remarks after receiving his Villa Press Pass, Musa thanked Buhari and his media team for restoring his accreditation.

He promised that he will continue to do his work as a State House Correspondent objectively, professionally and with due regard for the ethics of journalism.

CrimeWoman, Grandchild Killed During Lagos Cult Clash(Pictured) by Islie(op): 7:07am On Jun 29, 2015
One-year-old Opeyemi Yusuf was licking a lollipop, comfortably straddled to her grandma’s back en route to the market, when a bullet pierced through the back of their tricycle.

It hit Opeyemi in the head and penetrated to Mrs. Osayemi Victoria’s head, killing both victims on the spot.

Opeyemi was her mother’s only child, while the 57-year-old grandma was reportedly visiting when tragedy struck.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the tricycle they boarded ran into the middle of a gun battle between rival cult groups along Ishawo Road, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The incident, which happened on Tuesday, was said to have created confusion as residents ran helter-skelter.

The driver of the tricycle, Awoyemi Olaoluwa, said the single bullet pierced through the nylon back side of the tricycle and hit the duo who was in the middle.

The other two passengers, on the right and left, escaped unhurt.

Olaoluwa said, “I had picked Mama at Total bus stop. She was my second passenger and she was backing the child. I later picked another passenger along the road and she moved to the middle.

“I was heading towards the Agric bus stop along Ishawo Road. But when we got to Mechanic Village bus stop, I started hearing gunshots.

My passengers asked me to hurry because there was a fight in the area. I was told the cultists were on motorcycles and were chasing and shooting at one another.

“We had not moved too far when I saw that the woman’s head was bowed and resting on my back seat.”

He said his clothes had also become soaked in blood.

The other passengers, who suddenly realised what had happened, were said to have raised the alarm.

“My passengers told me to stop. That was when I knew Mama and the child had been hit by a stray bullet,” he added.

The tricycle driver was said to have called for help as the other passengers alighted and mixed with a crowd of people that had formed around the scene.

PUNCH Metro learnt that instead of helping the victims, the people started using their camera phones to take snapshots of the woman and the baby, who still had the lollipop stuck to his mouth.

Policemen from the Owutu division were said to have been alerted to the scene.

Our correspondent gathered that the corpses were first taken to the police station before they were deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue.

Opeyemi’s mother, Bukola, a teacher, said she was supposed to be in the tricycle with her mother, because they had planned to go to the market together.

She said, “My mother came from Ekiti to Lagos. She had spent one month with us.

“We were to go to the market together. She collected Opeyemi from me and put him on her back. But as we were on the way, I remembered that I left my phone at home and told her I was going to pick it.

“I told her to wait for me at the bus stop. It was long after when I was called that something terrible had happened. I got to the place and saw the bodies of my son and my mother.”

PUNCH Metro gathered that the victims’ family members were only interested in burying both victims in their hometown in Ekiti State.

A police source, however, assured that the police would intensify investigation to apprehend the suspects.

He said, “We will get the culprits.

“Nobody can do this kind of thing and go scot-free. The blood of the innocent child will hunt them. They will have no rest.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said he would call back.

But he had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

CrimePolice Kill Robbers In Gun Duel, Arrest Six Car Snatchers (Picture) by Islie(op): 10:48am On Jun 27, 2015
Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command on Thursday engaged suspected armed robbers in a gun duel at Nchia, Eleme Local Government Area, killing two of the bandits in the process.

The police recovered one pump action gun, a locally made pistol, 15 live cartridges, one red mask and assorted charms.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, disclosed that no police life was lost during the gun fire that lasted about 20 minutes.

Mohammad explained that the two robbers killed wore military camouflage trousers.

He said, “Our sustained onslaught on violent criminals and recovery of firearms in illegal hands in recent times in the state has continued to yield some significant triumphs.

“While responding to a distress call on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at about 4pm at Ogale-Nchia, Eleme, the Anti-Robbery Unit of Eleme Division, engaged suspected armed robbers in a fierce gun battle,” Mohammad said.

Mohammad recalled that six members of a car snatching gang were earlier arrested at Borikiri Sand Fill by the men of the Anti-Cultism Unit of the State Police Command.

He disclosed that a Toyota Camry car with registration number KFS 657 CN was recovered alongside three other vehicles suspected to have been stolen by the gang.

Mohammad also said, “At about 12pm on June 19, 2015 at Abuloma in Port Harcourt, teams of policemen acting on a tip-off, raided a waterfront suspected to be the hideout of a notorious and wanted suspected kidnapper/cultist.

“Items recovered from the enclave include two AK 47 rifles, five AK 47 magazines, 152 rounds of 7.62 live ammunition and different items suspected to be stolen.

“Also, on June 21,men of Anti-Cultism Unit, stormed Rumuekini forest and arrested 69 suspected cultists/robbers, two of whom were fatally wounded.

“Items recovered from them are two pump action guns, nine live cartridges, a Toyota Camry saloon care and other stolen items.

The police spokesman, however, warned criminals to leave the state or be ready to face the wrath of the law whenever they were apprehended.

Family"I Used Sex To Punish My Husband" - Pastor's Wife Tells Court by Islie(op): 5:48pm On Jun 26, 2015
A mother of four has told a divorce court that she starved her husband of sex for 18 years because he did not care for his family.

A 45year-old woman, Oluwatoyin Olafare, has told an Orile Customary Court sitting in Lagos State, that she starved her Pastor husband, Michael, of sex for 18 years because he stopped caring for her and the children.

The mother of four who instituted the divorce proceedings against her husband, also accused the Pastor of battering her whenever she demanded for school fees for the children and feeding allowance.

“I decided to punish my husband with no sex-weapon, because he was no longer caring for me.

He beats me up whenever I ask for the children’s school fees and feeding allowance.

He abuses my family whenever we have disagreements. He also demands for sex when he does not care if I have eaten or not. So, I do not allow him to touch me anymore.”

Oluwatoyin also claimed that her husband abandoned her and the children and moved out of the house to an unknown place.

But Pastor Olafare denied the accusations of his wife:

“I don’t beat her, but she nags a lot and causes trouble all around the neighbourhood. She is known as a street fighter and because of her attitude, we were sent out of the house.

She does not respect anybody including me; when I was transferred to the missionary quarters, she refused to follow me and so I left.”

CrimePersonal Assistant Dupes And Abducts Boss’ Son For Two Years by Islie(op): 12:01pm On Jun 26, 2015
A 38-year-old man, Christopher Osoba, and one Emmanuel Okenze, aka Coach, have been arrested by the police for allegedly kidnapping a student, Olamilekan Ogunbiyi, 21.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Osoba was the personal assistant to Olamilekan’s father, Abayomi Ogunbiyi.

It was learnt that Abayomi had sought to get his son to travel abroad when Osoba volunteered to help.

Our correspondent gathered that Osoba linked up the family with Okenze, who claimed to be a travel agent.

The victim’s father was said to have paid Okenze, N900, 000 and N300,000 at different times to facilitate the travel.

The men, with some other suspects, were said to have connived and kidnapped the victim.

A police source said, “In August 2013, the boy’s father asked his PA (Osoba) to accompany the boy to the airport. They indeed got to the airport.

“But they cast a spell on him and he lost his mind. They asked the boy to go to Coach’s (Okenze) house. They ordered him around and he could not reach his family again.

“Meanwhile, they had told his father that the travel was successful and they started collecting money from him under the pretext of it was being sent to Olamilekan.”

Our correspondent learnt from the source that each time the father asked to speak with his son, they lied to him that Olamilekan could not be reached where he was.

The syndicate was alleged to have collected different sums from the family.
The source said, “Sometime in June, the boy regained his consciousness.

“He got a phone with which he contacted his father and narrated his ordeals. His father could not believe that his son was still in Nigeria.”

The police were said to have been alerted, leading to the arrest of Osoba and Okenze.

Police investigations revealed that the suspects, and others who were at large, had allegedly collected more than N6m from the victim’s father.

The police arraigned them before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court on seven counts of kidnapping, stealing, obtaining money and accessories after facts.

The charges read in part, “That you, Christopher Osoba, Emmanuel Okenze, and others now at large, sometime in the month of August 2013, at Bajulaiye Olayinka, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully capture and detain one Olamilekan Ogunbiyi against his will and thereby committed an offence.

“That you did obtain the sum of N3.1m from one Abayomi Ogunbiyi, that you are in a position to take his son, Olamilekan Ogunbiyi, to Uzbekistan and Romania, a representation you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence.

“That you did conspire among yourselves to conceal the information relating to Olamilekan Ogunbiyi, to the fact he travelled to Uzbekistan and Romania, which to your knowledge is false and thereby committed an offence.”

The police prosecutor, Cyril Ejiofor, from the Department of Criminal Investigation, said the offences were punishable under sections 409, 269, 285, 312, 98, 115 and 413 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Their defence counsel urged the court to admit them to bail in liberal terms.

The Chief Magistrate, I. O. Adelaja, admitted them to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till July 22, 2015.

PoliticsSenate Will Reconvene To Consider Ministerial List — Saraki by Islie(op): 7:35pm On Jun 25, 2015
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has assured that members of the Red Chamber will reconvene any time before the adjourned date to consider any matter of urgent national importance or to attend to any national assignment requiring its attention, especially the nomination of ministers by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He made this clarification in a statement released by his media team.
“The adjournment of Senate’s plenary to July 21, 2015, was meant to give the Senate Ad-Hoc Committees on Legislative Agenda and Review of the Senate’s Finances time to conclude their work and submit their reports. The two committees were given one-week to submit their reports. However, the Senate assured that it will reconvene at any time before the adjourned date to consider any matter of urgent national importance or to attend to any national assignment requiring its attention,” the statement reads.

The Senate’s Ad-hoc Committee on Financial review is the first time the Senate is setting up a body to review its own salaries, allowances, and the overhead cost of running the Senate with a view to realigning them to reflect the present economic situation in the country.
It could be recalled that the National Assembly had slashed its 2015 budget to N120billion from N150billion as a result of dwindling Federal Government’s revenue.
The cut was part of the National Assembly’s belt-tightening measures in view of the current economic realities in the country.
Saraki, had during the inauguration of the committee observed that the subject of reduction in cost of governance had been on the front burner of national discourse for a long time because of its extremely sensitive nature.
Saraki pledged that the Senate under his leadership would make “financial conservatism” its watchword.
The Senate President said: “There still persists the need to project clarity, accountability and transparency in all legislative matters and legislators’ welfare.
“The 8th Senate under our watch recognizes the concerns raised by Nigerians about the cost of running office most especially with the economic challenges facing our nation.
“The Senate will be more transparent regarding all public funds spent for the purpose of paying salaries and allowances of legislators and ensure that distinction is sufficiently made between what a legislator actually earns and what is spent to run and implement legislative business and committee activities.
“The watchword in our financial issues will be fiscal conservatism. It is therefore on this arm that the committee is mandated to carry out thorough fiscal examination on the Senate finances with the aim of coming up with the best cost-effective regime in the 8th Senate.”
