– For being very vocal, the Senate has ordered for the investigation of Senator Kabir Marafa over statement that is seen by the Senate’s leadership as bringing the red chamber to disrepute – The planned investigation has drawn condemnation by Senator Ahmed Lawan and others who described it as unnecessary – The senators said that the Senate has too much tasks to oversee saying that the investigation of Marafa for mere statement amount denied of free speech The Senate was divided on Tuesday, February 16, over moves by its leadership to investigate Senator Kabir Marafa on allegation of bringing the Senate to disrepute. Some senators who are opposed to the investigation called it unnecessary. The senators said that the senate had more pressing issues to consider. Recall that the Senate had mandated investigation into allegation of an interview published in The Punch granted by Sen. Marafa which allegedly brought the Senate to disrepute. Senator Ahmed Lawan (APC Yobe North) said that the Senate ought to be more sensitive in discharging of its function so as to ensure probity, transparency and accountability. He said that the Senate should concern more about building a reputable image through its actions rather than being concerned with the actions or interview of one individual senator. Lawan said: “I think at the moment, we are hypersensitive to what the public feels about us because an individual senator bares his mind on an issue. “So I will advise the Senate that instead of spending so much time an individual senator, we should rather take the bull by the horn and focus on our fundamental functions and mandates. “If we do that, no Nigerian will disrespect the National Assembly or indeed the Senate.” In his view, Senator Abu Ibrahim (APC Katsina South) said that the Senate was a very big institution with great responsibilities and should not limit itself to individual’s free speech. He said that the moment the Senate begins to make mountains out of small issues then it could lead to the Senate investigating itself. “Our main function requires freedom of speech: the moments you start instilling fear among ourselves that whether the Senate will impute meanings to whatever we say, then we have to call ourselves to order. “I believe that our colleagues should be very careful in this kind of situation. We should consider statements according to their merits. “What did Marafa say really that impinged on the integrity and the public image of the National Assembly? “We have so many pressing problems in this country. We should concentrate on those issues that will move the nation forward. But here we are trying to cause more troubles for ourselves. “If we are doing anything to our colleague, we are doing so to ourselves collectively,” the lawmaker said. On his part, Senator Ibrahim sounds one of warning that he and other senators will be waiting for the report of the committee but stressed that the Senate ought to tread cautiously. – His lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has been visiting the court frequently but to no avail – Justice Ibrahim Buba promises to give him the ruling Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tomopolo, a former militant leader who has refused to appear before a Federal High court to answer his charges is trying to play a fast one on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). READ ALSO: EFCC chairman under fire over statement against judiciary Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Whatsapp Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo has appealed his case before the federal high court. The embattled ex-warlord on February 16 appealed to a federal high court, sitting in Lagos state, to give him a copy of the ruling of February 8, 2016 in the charge filed against him by the EFCC, to allow him appeal against same, Vanguard reports. One of the counsels to the ex-militant leader, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has reportedly been visiting the court to get the ruling, but to no avail. Adegboruwa, yesterday made an oral appeal to Justice Ibrahim Buba, conveying his frustrations in respect of the ruling. The defence counsel told the court that it was pertinent to appeal to the judge to intervene because of the limited time Tompolo has to exercise his right of appeal. Responding to the defence counsel request, Justice Bubu said the court’s ruling was only delivered on February 8, 2016, adding that he had accumulated judgments and rulings to deliver. Justice Buba told Adegboruwa, that a lawyer from his firm had been frequent in the court since February 8, 2016 over same request. The judge said the ruling was being typed, but assured Adegboruwa that it would be ready today (Tuesday) for him to pick up. The EFCC on February 11 declared Tompolo wanted after he failed to show up in court to answer his charges. The anti-graft agency recently revealed that the former militant leader was declared wanted for illegal diversion of N11.9 billion ($60 million) belonging to NIMASA. Arase said: “We are looking for Tompolo and my men are on his trail. We will arrest him anywhere we sight him.” Tompolo and the immediate past director-general of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi, as well as others are slammed with a 40 count charge of fraudulent activities. Lactating mothers often express concerns that drugs they take, or which are prescribe for them by a doctor, may be excreted in breast milk and may affect the baby. While most drugs, including antibiotics, do pass into breast milk, the amount is small and will neither benefit nor harm the baby. Only a few drugs may cause damage to the baby. These include anticoagulants(given to the mother to treat blood clots) which may cause haemorrhages in the body; antithyroid drugs(particularly thiouracil) which may depress the infant's thyroid gland; ) a laxative called coloxyl which may give the baby diarrhoea; lithium which may make the baby cold and blue, and mysoline which is sometimes used to treat epilepsy. If you have been prescribe one of these drugs, stop breastfeeding and ask your doctor if its safe to continue to breast feed......
