Recent reports that some butchers selling tuberculosis-infected beef were arrested by officials of the Lagos State Government is not suprising against d backdrop of d fact dat much of d meat sold nd consumed by d pple is hardly inspected. Meat is often exposed and sold in d most unhygienic condition as public health inspectors hardly do their job.The discovery alone is frightening considering d gravity of d hazard on public health. Tuberculosis(TB) is a highly contagious nd debilitating disease that shld nt be toyed with. From that consideratn, steps shld be taken to unravel the source of d meat nd the chain of distribution. Measures shld b put in place to ensure that such unwhole-some slip does not hpn again. The existence of illegal nd unapproved slaughter slabs is at d root of this problem. Government has done much to dissuade butchers 4rm slaughtering infected animals, which Lagos State officials said has stopped in the over 20 approved slabs where veterinary doctors examine animals before slaughtering. Unfortunately, that is not d case at d illegal slabs.while it is the duty of government to protect the citizenry, people shld also guard against esposing themselves to contaminated food products. For some time now, the poor condition of abattiors in Lagos has taken d front burner. Alarm has been raised in some cases about d filthy condition of most abattiors where livestock consumed by d populace are slaughtered. Lack of regulation nd supervision is also a problem. It is d duty of local councils to oversee abattoirs. Each local council has a supevisory councillor in charge of public health nd there officials whose duty it is to ensure that the abattiors are kept clean, and unhealthy animals are not slaughtered for public consumption. The Lagos State Government should identify those officials who have failed to do their job in the extant case nd have them sanctioned appropriately. Nairalanders it is up 2 us.let find a solution to dis problem, we r d pple suffering 4rm dis disease.[img]Recent reports that some butchers selling tuberculosis-infected beef were arrested by officials of the Lagos State Government is not suprising against d backdrop of d fact dat much of d meat sold nd consumed by d pple is hardly inspected. 1MCN: Friend, I don't basically have a problem with the first line of your argument that it's the agelong tradition of the local people, as I can't decide for a people what should constitute their tradition or how they should celebrate their feasts (although this is not even a traditionally canonized festival--just a birthday celebration of the local head). But I have this feeling that if exactly this same kind of thing happens in other persons clime or is sanctioned by other people's religious, traditional or political beliefs you won't come up with the same kind of defense you've just put forward. Like I said, I respect our diversities in traditions and the passion with which we hold them. But I also respect the respect others respect others's passions.OLODO,U B FIRST GRADE ODE.
